We were staying just up the road so decided to have dinner here on our first evening. It opens at 6pm (closed Wednesdays) and has an extensive menu, all home-cooked by the landlady. They have a lot of vegan and vegetarian options if that's your bag. My husband and I had the fillet steak and sea bream, and my gosh it was good. Big portions, and it was all cooked to perfection. We consider ourselves "foodies" (terrible expression) and we're really impressed how she got all this excellent food out to us and other diners, at the same time as as serving at the bar and waitressing. We couldn't fault it. The salt and pepper squid was the best we ever had. We returned the second night and it was just as good! The landlord is a lovely chap too, but is quite poorly and they are trying to run their business as well as trying to deal with his illness (not an easy task). They may not be open every day because of this, so I'd recommend phoning to check they're open if you'd like to go there (I think they only take bookings if you want food). I hope future guests will be more understanding and patient than the previous Google reviewer... the struggles people are going through aren't always obvious.

A lovely country pub just across the road from the Exe Valley camp site and 2 minutes walk from the most picturesque cricket ground in the country. Friendly welcome dogs included and superb food. Vegetarian and Vegan on the menu. It was so good we went back the second night as well.

Food was wholesome, my problem was the landlady's dog, ( on our first visir he harassed a couple of placid Labs) on the second visit he was running free in the dining area, we were advised to hang our costs on the wall as the dog liked to mark its area, unfortunately the couple in the window seat were not told this and the dog pee'd on the ladies jacket.

Keith and his team are great lots of banter and great choice of gins and beer. The exmoor gold was beautiful 😍 The pub Is dog friendly and meeting the owners dog Bentley 🐕 was a treat. The food is all homemade and great value with lots of choice to suit all dietary needs. Only opens at 6pm, you do need to pre book a table as limited due to the landlords health Great spot if your staying at the caravan site or passing by. Great experience 👍 well done guys for making us feel most welcome.

Very friendly atmosphere....apart from the pub dog taking a dislike to our 15wk old puppy 😄 After one pint each of Exmoor ale unfortunately they ran out, I guess that can easily happen. We had soup and a prawn starter which were both very nice. My husband had the gammon steak which he said was delicious and I had the Exmoor ale steak pie also extremely tasty, but I do dislike it served in a red hot pie dish , it nakes it tricky to eat., but that's just me, guess it makes it easier for them than serving up a slice of pie. All served with assorted veg and chunky chips. All in all a very delicious meal. With lots of treats for our puppy.

Visited The Badgers Holt two nights while staying on the great campsite across the road. It's the only pub in the village so almost all the customers were also from the campsite, notably not used by any locals. Very picturesque pub with traditional beamed interior, but looks drab and dated up close. Good menu but meals very disappointing, not worth the prices charged. One decent ale on tap, others not available so lack of choice. On the plus side; dog friendly. Landlord very boastful, overpowering and intrusive when all we wanted was a quiet dinner and a couple of drinks afterwards. Echoes of Basil Fawlty!

Lovely local pub, husband and wife team, working hard to serve drinks and food. We didn’t book but they managed to fit us in which was appreciated. Extremely dog friendly including in the bar area and outside (not sure about the restaurant area). We had fish and chips and gammon and chips (&trimmings) for £13 each. The gammon was very thick and the egg cooked perfectly. We also tried the Taunton sparkling cider which was great. All round a great evening. Great to see a non owned brewery pub. Keep it up!!!!

Very much a old style pub with the hard working owners behind the bar and in kitchen. Homemade style food with several extensive specials boards, including an amazing vegan/vegetarian range as well as fish and a conventional with meat choices. Don't expect a soulless corporate chain or fancy themed gastro pub, it's what an family run establishment with its locals and regulars. Word of advise.... book in advance, understand it is frequently fully booked, even mid week and out of season. Not just if every table full, but also as much I assume, that they know their limitations on how many people/covers/sittings can be comfortably served with their resources, and stop when this is reached. Dogs very welcome and likely to find a pub quiz sheet on your table to challenge you while you are there. Other review comments noted, can only assume that as we had a warm and friendly reception, (note:- owner does have a wonderful dry sense of humour) that like most people, if rushed off feet, don't have time for small talk, and those who haven't decency to wait till you can be attended to, or respect they are one of many needing attention.... could take offence and things wrong way.... I feel perhaps they are like us, and when confronted by some people, just think {censored} and then concentrate on those who do apreciate your work. PS... thanks for use of phone when ours had no signal, and wife says your dog is soooooo cute, you are lucky she did not have a larger bag with her! We are just sorry we were only on a short break and did not have opportunity to work through the menu.

The food was excellent all freshly prepared with care. We are vegetarian and the veggie options were excellent. Whilst waiting for food you are given a place mat and crayons to complete the quiz written on it. Have to say this was a brilliant idea as it stops the whingers whining about the time it takes for food to arrive.

If you can ignore the sticky tables and the musty odor from wet dogs you might stay for a pint of flat beer before heading out the door and waiting for the next bus to Dulverton. If its a sunny day you might enjoy looking out the greasy windows to reflect on where to go next. Your memories of grandmothers spider web covered wooden ceiling fixtures and christmas lights are mixed with old postcards from various places and moments from the past decades, preserved here. At 8.30 the kitchen is closed but if you insist on some food you might be tempted with steak and chips if there's any left. I presume the cook was anxious to get home because it arrived promptly and the innermost flesh and sinews were unaffected by the grilling.

Food ok, but not made to feel terribly welcome. The second visit was on a Friday night where we sat outside as alot of dogs were around, and having 2 with us ourselves was easier than trying to cram inside...Food was ok again, nothing fancy. We had booked the Stable Cottage, adjacent to the Badgers Holt for a long week end. We were met on arrival by the Landlord and duly settled. From then on the stay, accommodation wise went down hill. The Cottage can only be described as in need of some TLC and a womans touch, it was very basic and the photographs of the interior, make it look better than it is. You may notice that there are no pictures of the bathroom, I am not surprised because it was a shambles, Luke warm water, toilet not flushing and leaking. also making a terrible noise when flushed. This was reported to the Landlord because the floor was getting saturated. He rectified this by repositioning the plastic bottle that was being used inside the cistern to combat the knocking. Farcical, but funny. The sink and bath sealant was obviously done by a potcher. To be honest we only stayed two of the three nights and packed up on Sunday morning. Attempted to speak to the Landlord but got no answer, so just left. The only thing that can be said about the stay was that, so many things were funny , like the plinth falling off the kitchen unit, the hoover coming apart, the taps moving and oviously the noise diminisher i.e the full plastic bottle in the cistern. With some thought and customer consideration, the Cottage could be idyllic. We will not be returning and would not recommend to anyone, who has viewed it on line.

I have now reached the 56 year mark and after the time I have had since April I value every day far more than I did and take each day as it comes and expect to be taken as I am by others. In all my visits to Exmoor with my parents when I was growing up and when I returned back down with my lovely wife and various dogs over the years we have never been in the White Horse. As we were staying at Court Farm in Snowdrop we took the chance on a filthy night to venture in to the bar at the White Horse. I really liked the set up=looked like church or chapel pews and plenty of country pictures and items on the walls-how it should be. The gentleman serving says Mark on the receipt was a lovely gent pleasant and hosting without any airs or graces-helpful and considerate. Meal wise we had One Trout in Almonds served with new potatoes and seasonal veg well cooked and well presented and One Flat Iron Steak cooked medium which again was very well cooked and well presented. Managed one sticky toffee pudding and one raspberry brulee washed down with Guiness and Exmoor ale, the waiting staff were pleasant and effecient and the chef has an odd sense of humour but having come from that background I enjoyed that. Excellent meal in wonderful surroundings
