Arrived too late for sandwiches but ordered from the starters and light bite menu. Previously the sandwiches were brilliant. The pulled pork taco was no good for me as I am coeliac, but I was told I could have it on gluten free bread. When it came I was horrified! One piece of sliced bread with the crusts cut off and a small quenelle of pulled pork. My Husbands was similar except more bread. We wrote an email and have yet to have a reply

Characterful pub/restaurant/hotel in the country. very close to Hurn airport and therefore access by private transport only. Very nice snack menu, very attentive staff with special mention for Amelia. Kitchen doing a grand job with food cooked very thoughtfully. Priced accordingly. Lots of tabled with some in private areas An added bonus is the Pullman restaurant carriage from c1960. This is on one of the railways scandalously butchered by Beeching in the 1950's.

We booked last minute and asked for some changes to the room. My partner has a spinal cord injury. The team accommodated us with no problems. Our trip was sadly due to a family member passing away and we had to arrange the funeral etc… Amanda, Sarah and the team went out of their way to make us feel welcome and well cared for. They went above and beyond for us and even offered us the use of their washing machine. Food is delicious, a big improvement on how it was last time my partner visited about 12 years ago. Breakfast is high quality and the rooms have bottled water, filter coffee and fresh milk is provided as and when you need it. Thanks guys for making this hard time a bit more bearable! Very much appreciated, we will be returning.

This was the first time I had been here for about 40 years. All those years ago it was quite rough and ready but full of character. Sometimes changes happen for the better. Not so here, as all the character has been wiped out. The welcome was very poor, and we felt we were an inconvenience to be served, once the female server appeared. No dimpled handles were available, so a straight handle was supplied. My pint of Butcome Original was a reasonable temperature, my wife's small Guinness was as expected. However, the price for both was much higher than anticipated. A local visitor was stood waiting at the bar to be served for a very long time. Our tub chairs were filthy and need a deep clean. On our departure, I returned our glasses to the bar, whereby an anorak wearing woman was serving the local gent, there was no acknowledgement to me, no goodbye, no thanks, no nothing. A dismal experience and I won't be rushing back ( possibly another 40 years ! ). Why do people work in these environments if they are NOT happy doing so, get something else

We stayed for second time. The Pros and Cons..... Pros Very comfortable beds Pleasant staff Good cooked breakfast Easy parking Clean Strategic location Plenty of room sockets Hot water at all times Controllable radiator Plenty of hangers Fair price Cons No cereals for breakfast No toilet brush (not very pleasant for your partner). The evening food menu is weird and is the reason why we didn’t eat there much. The menu needs more straightforward items such as pate or breaded mushrooms, risotto etc. It is very difficult to find something that you actually want to eat. It was the same for both of us on both visits 6 years apart.

After walking with my family and Fred their dog we popped in to have a drink before heading home. Service was fabulous. The pub was warm, friendly and busy with friendly people and a few dogs. The landlady came to see how we all were and Fred enjoyed his doggy treats. All dogs were offered a little treat. This country pub is very welcoming and I know they do food and they have rooms but I personally have not eaten here but my brother said the food is lovely.

We stayed for 2 nights, check in very easy, room very clean and bed comfortable. Bathroom small but adequate, no bath just a shower. Good tea and coffee facilities provided also fresh milk. We had dinner on the 1st night which was very nice and there was a nice atmosphere in the pub/restaurant area. Breakfast both mornings was very good with a very wide choice to choose from. The doggy guests were also well looked after. Amanda and Sarah are very helpful and are very sociable with the guests and take great care in looking after them while staying at the Avon Causeway, we would definitely return.

The Avon Causeway proved to be a really good choice for our weekend away celebrating my partner's recent birthday. The staff were so polite, friendly and helpful throughout the stay, and we enjoyed many chats with most of them. The food we experienced at breakfast time and the evening were very well cooked, and extremely tasty. The rooms being well stocked, and the bed very comfortable. Amanda and Sarah run a very good ship indeed. I would recommend a stay at the Avon Causeway Hotel to anyone.

I have visited the Avon Causeway since October with 8 of my mum friends with our babies. At first we were made to feel very welcome when our babies were newborn. However, recently the level of service we have received has really deteriorated. On Wednesday, a member of staff was particularly rude to me. I made the manager aware and I’m afraid to say the manager’s response was also incredibly poor. Despite always leaving the pub tidy and ensuring our babies do not disturb other guests here, we have been made to feel most unwelcome and will not be returning. If you are planning on visiting here with young babies, be warned you will not be made to feel welcome!

We chose the Avon Causeway Pub because it was dog friendly. We loved seeing the Pullman linked to the side of the Avon Causeway Pub when we drive into the carpark. It was warm and cosy inside. The landlady Amanda was very friendly and made us feel really welcome. The staff made a fuss of our dog and gave him treats. The menu had so many tasty things on offer it was difficult to choose. I had the crab cakes with chunky chips, my daughter had the vegan pie and my son in law had a burger with fries. All three of us were blown away as it was the tastiest meal we had eaten in a very long time. Have to say as an 86 year old that it was great to receive excellent customer service which nowadays seems to be the exception and not the rule. We will be sure to call again when we are back in the area and will recommend it to everyone. It was a real treat for my daughter who usually has very limited choices as a vegan. All round it was top notch and a wonderful experience. Thanks Amanda and the rest of the staff!

Breakfast experience was very good, the dogs got there own dishes! Booked Sunday lunch for 8 people, we were squashed into a table near the door to the garden, was barely any room between us and the table next door, it was also unbearably hot! Whilst the staff were lovely, I felt that being tucked around the corner was a disadvantage to us as I think we may have been forgotten and on a couple of occasions had to search for a member of staff! The majority of us ordered Sunday roasts which I have ordered before and enjoyed but on this occasion it was not as good, the roast potatoes were dry as was the chicken the roasties were tasteless, the beef & veg were nice. We love a roast but on this occasion was not up to scratch. Sort you roasties out and we’ll be back!

As people local to the area and have previously visited before Butcombe took it over we are very disappointed. It used to be a busy pub with good food and friendly staff. It’s not longer that.

Our room was very clean snd comfortable. Really nice to have plenty of fresh milk and decent tea & coffee with a cafetière. Also home made cookies waiting for us. Great food in the evening and a really nice breakfast. Just chilled and easy. The dog was made welcome with her own bowl and treats and a cooked breakfast in the morning. Very friendly and helpful staff and a nice location. The old railway track (see photo) runs through miles of woodland so great for walking the dog. The only negative was it’s near a busy road so you can hear traffic at night but that wouldn’t stop me staying again.

As a former railway station, this hotel has style. The food was well prepared and good quality. Like all good restaurants, you have to wait a bit as the food is prepared to order.

We ate in here recently and mistakenly were only given the gluten free menu. However, this time we returned with a coeliac member of the family and it was a great evening. She had the (gluten free) beer-battered fish and chips and said it was the first time in 20 years she had had it. She ate every bit. The place seems to have turned a corner since Butcombe took it over, so I urge people to try it.

When I booked a table for a Wednesday night for my family, I was not expecting it to come with its own entertainment that would rival a Fawlty Towers episode.First let me say the front of house was excellent and did a good job in very difficult circumstances. The table was booked for 7PM and when we arrived the pub was very busy. We were shown to out table and a drinks order taken. He drinks arrived and the waitress said she would be back shortly to take the food order. Upon taking the order she told us there was about a 30 minute wait for food as the kitchen was so busy. This was not a problem and it was nice to be informed. The starters arrived and were very good. If you are a person who likes a substantial starter then these are not for you but that does not take away from the quality of the food. You will not be disappointed with either the potted chicken rillette, smoked bacon, grilled sourdough, cucumber chutney or Severn & Wye beetroot-cured smoke salmon, horseradish and dill creme fraiche and pickled fennel. From here the evening went downhill. The waitress cleared out plates and after about 10 minutes asked if we were ready for the main course. I am not sure I have ever been asked that before. Normally the kitchen would know what time to leave between guests’ courses. The restaurant had run out of stock for one of the items on the menu so we ordered a burger, spinach and ricotta ravioli and chalk stream trout fishcakes, Café de Paris butter sauce, spinach, poached Clarence Court egg. I also had a side order of chips. The order took some time to arrive, hardly surprising as there was less than harmony in the kitchen. Indeed, this was the closest that the chef got to ‘Gordon Ramsey’ judging by the amount of swearing coming from the kitchen. The waitress appeared and apologised if we had heard the bad language. The mains arrived although the side order seemed to be forgotten and the waitress had to be reminded. The burger I am told was good as was the ravioli but the chef had definitely taken it out on my trout fishcakes. The were swimming in a pool of butter sauce, but this did not make up for the fact that they were dry. In addition, the poached egg was like a hard boiled egg and so the thought of that lovely yoke running down over the fishcake was never going to happen. It is very rare that I return food, but this was one of those occasions. It was dealt with efficiently and I was asked if I wanted to choose something else from the menu. I declined as there is nothing worse than waiting for another dish to arrive, by which time the rest of your diners have finished theirs. Yes, the waitress said I would not be charged for mine, small consultation for a ruined meal with the family. To be honest I had no intention of paying for the fishcakes anyway. I do not pay for food that is not of a standard. It all seemed a of going through a routine and no empathy for the fact that it is not only about the meal but about the occasion as well. So, the rating here is based on the whole experience and not just the quality of the majority of the food. Nothing can make up for a ruined occasion, but some effort would have been appreciated. As to if I would eat here again, yes, as everybody deserves a second chance, but only if I am around and about the area, not as an occasion with friends and or family.
