Assaggi in City of London, Westminster

We stumbled in after a tiring day trekking around London, no reservations, but it was early and we were given a nice table. We had assumed we were heading for a good but usual restaurant, but it is everything but! It is a lovely space…open, bright, simply and elegantly decorated, with large windows that were open wide on a mild night. On the second floor (a bit hard to find… we totally missed it at first and had to double back), but that added to its private and quiet atmosphere. First we were served an amazing crisp bread dressed with olive oil and rosemary that was utterly addictive and a delicious Prosecco. Then we had both a delicious monk fish wrapped in pancetta with a crispy topping of frizzled samphire, simply but beautifully done (again delicious) spinach, and an extraordinary pasta with a pesto of herbs and walnuts, the best pasta either of us have ever had, (and that includes in Italy). Our waiter was a lovely man…who was very attentive and friendly. Hands down the best place I have been to in London!

Food was adequate, service was attentive. However, the price was indefensible and extortionate. We were charged £17.50 for one gin and tonic, £5 for some steamed spinach, and nearly £6 for supposedly premium water that was served in open jugs, and could easily have come from the tap. Pricey mains (~£40 apiece) did not include sides. On top of all this, the restaurant had the temerity to add London's now-ubiquitous 12.5% "discretionary" service charge. The price was offensive - at least double what the food was worth - and we will never go back.

The best Italian restaurant in London!!! Assaggi offers a slice of Italy with its authentic dishes and cozy ambiance. The grilled fish is a must-try. Friendly service and a charming setting make this spot perfect for any occasion.

We used to go here a lot when we lived in London. 10 years of having nice meals although expensive. Being back in London we booked for old times sake however my wife was very unwell at the last minute and I had to cancel. I was charged £120 for my cancellation. I called and spoke to a very rude man who enforced the fact that they will not refund my money and that’s final. All gone. He reminded me many times that these were the terms and conditions. Truly horrible end to our trip to London and we will never go back. You can keep the overpriced Italian food - there are better options anyway.

I have been coming back to this amazing restaurant in the Jordaan for about 7 years. It is probably the best Italian restaurant I have ever visited- their fresh pasta dishes are ingredible !

pleasant restaurant and friendly staff. My wife and I had the veal chop. Generous portion but overcooked ! We complained but the waiter said it was cooked medium. He had not asked how we wanted it cooked. We had expected a high quality restaurant to cook veal rose. The veal was £39.90 each excluding vegetables + 12'5% service. Will not go there again !

We ate here today - late lunch for Valentine’s Day. We haven’t been here for such a long time and had wondered what it would be like. We were warmly greeted and the service throughout the meal was excellent. All the food we had was delicious. The crab salad and the pear with pecorino as starters both lovely. The Fritto Misto excellent and the pan a Cotta just divine. Yes it’s not cheap but the quality is excellent and it’s a lovely laid back restaurant with great service.

Had a fantastic evening here last night with 2 sets of London friends - all of whom eat at lots of fancy, and expensive restaurants every week, but proclaim this to be their favourite. Food was off the scale gorgeous, cost high - but what do you expect from a restaurant situated on one of the most expensive streets on England - value, worth every penny! Don't come here if you're looking for cheap food; do come here if you're looking for the mist fabulous Italian cooking in a wonderfully understated environment.

I see some of the so-so reviews on here and I don't think they were at the same place I went...The owner/chef is taking your order and talking to everyone. The space is small - 10 or so tables. The food was impeccable as was the service. I will add this to the top of my list of places to eat while in London.

I have been going to Assaggi for the past 30 years. Well more in the last 10 than all of the previous 20. Assaggi was one of those restaurants you could never get a table at. Acclaimed by all the major restaurant critics. Rumoured to also be one of Diana’s fave spots too. This small first floor room has a beautiful history and a legacy all of its own. The all Italian worded menu, the efficient helpful can’t do enough for you staff. It’s just a beautiful piece of Italy in Notting hill. I have eaten most dishes on the menu. It’s all good. Actually it’s all great. The simplicity of the fresh crab with lemon, the pear salad or the mozzarella with aubergine. For my main I had the perfectly cooked calves liver. A big deviation from my usual cooked to perfection sea bass. Unfortunately the noise level can crank up in the room very easily. Last night was one of those nights. The staff were suicidally apologetic given they allowed 16 people on 2 tables. It won’t stop me going back. Assaggi is a personal fave of mine and consistently delivers. Go enjoy. Take your ear plugs if necessary.

What a rip-off of a restaurant. Mediocre food, Mayfair prices, £3 tap water. You’re much better off going to Mediterráneo or Osteria basílico. There is nothing good about this place.

Tuvimos un excelente almuerzo bien presentado en este restaurante que está arriba en una habitación agradable y soleada con grandes ventanales para que entre mucha luz. El menú estaba en italiano (sorpresa es un restaurante italiano //) pero todo fue explicado por un camarero servicial. Teníamos varios platos de cangrejo, lubina, etc. todo bien. Sí, es caro, pero eso se puede ver desde el menú. ¿No necesitas entrar si no te gusta lo que ves?

La comida no solo es absolutamente increíble, sino que el personal y el servicio son excepcionales, te hacen sentir como en casa y como parte de la familia. No puedo recomendar el lugar lo suficiente. Incluso tenían un plato especial para mi hijo y lo invitaban a menudo a la cocina para ver cómo estaba hecho. Cada vez que volvamos a Londres, haremos un punto para venir aquí.

So disappointed! Food was just average and food and drinks extremely overpriced. Pretentious but didn’t live up to waiter’s description of food. No table sauces to help the dry food go down. Many other restaurant choices to be made before visiting. Give it a miss. Staff did not care that we didn’t enjoy food, still charged us £20 service charge. First Trip Advisor post have left in years but felt the need to comment on this restaurant.

Hay una razón para ello. Un menú poco aburrido con precios que le hacen llorar a los ojos se podría perdonar por la calidad y el servicio excepcionales que esta noche no ofreció en muchos frentes. Dicho esto, mis espárragos frescos fueron algunos de los mejores que he comido, muy bien preparados, llenos de sabor y cocidos a la perfección. Sin embargo, fue cuesta abajo desde aquí. Mi brillo estaba demasiado cocido y un poco seco y sin sabor, y el acompañamiento de papa aplastada sin brillo. Una botella cara de Gavi Di Gavi era aceptable, pero nada del otro mundo.Una comida normal por un precio muy alto, por lo que sospecho, la falta de apoyo, que es una vergüenza, ya que solía ser un verdadero placer y un lugar divertido.

Assaggi is an ‘up-market’ Italian restaurant in Notting Hill (or is it Bayswater?) It enjoys a discreet and secluded location in a handsome terrace in Chepstow Place, W2.

good food - place is simple / sterile . staff is italian, food is real italian. enjoyed tagliatelle , and tuna on avocado. Decent food, price quality not optimal. wine selection is good but slightly pricey. Decent choice if you’re in the neighborhood

Hemos estado aquí varias veces y nunca nos ha decepcionado con la comida y el servicio. Es una comida del sur de Italia bien ejecutada con un servicio atento de camareros entusiastas. Assaggi used to be a very small first-floor flat turn into a cozy Italian restaurant with delicious pasta dishes now they got the ground floor and have a bigger space and the food is as good as it used to be

There are so many great Italian restaurants in London but Assaggi is my old time favorite, amazing pastas, simple and delicious dishes, top notch.

Vinimos aquí para la cena de cumpleaños de mi novio en julio. Realmente disfruté el ambiente, especialmente en el verano. El ambiente del restaurante era muy cálido y realmente acogedor (¡habían puesto el aire acondicionado a la temperatura perfecta cuando hacía mucho calor!), Y se sentía como si estuviéramos en una casa de amigos - nos sentimos tan relajados que hizo la experiencia mucho mejor. It is a charming restaurant, simply but cosily decorated.

If you enjoy the highest quality of italian food, with the feeling that you are dining in a family home - Assaggi has to be the place for you in London. Every time we return to Assaggi, it is like being welcomed back in to the family. There is not a great deal of room, but this really is fine dining in an authentic Tuscany venue. The staff are better than excellent and the food and wines match the staff.

I have to confess to being a tad disappointed in the food and the service seemed a bit of a struggle at times. My calves liver was overdone despite my being specific, but to their credit I wasn't charged. It is a very nice dining room with friendly staff and I will go back and give the place another chance. It is a distant second to Chucs around the corner in Westbourne Grove who have a comparable menu but deliver a far better experience. I'll give it another go.

Assagi has now been in business under the same owner/manager for 22 years and shows no sign of flagging. It's expensive - £100 a head - but the food is superb (Italian), the servicfe impeccable, the ambience (an upstairs room above the pizza brasserie at ground level) restrained and relaxing. The room has about 8-10 tables and can seat about 30 customers. Assagi is thoroughly recommended!

Superbe restaurant intime au 1er étage d'une belle demeure au centre de Notting Hill. Décoration sobre (tableaux modernes minimalistes) et accueil très chaleureux. La carte en Italien est d'une grande richesse et la description donnée par le serveur donne envie de tout tester : produits de qualité et raffinés, présentation impeccable, ambiance agréable. Un vrai bijou, à renouveler pour découvrir l'ensemble de leurs créations.

I have only been here once, last summer, with an Aussie Italian friend and we both loved the place. Wonderful food, divine antipasti and pizza, with equally great service. They took our coats on entry and looked after us impeccably. Tucked away on a smart residential street close to Notting Hill and Bayswater stations, this is a beautifully intimate place to dine. Prices are pretty reasonable for what is a very expensive part of London. I will visit again next time I'm in the area and recommend this place, especially for couples.

Regularmente detenerse para una cena familiar en el bar assaggi está abajo que ofrece excelente cocina italiana tradicional. El menú es obviamente mucho más simple que en la parte de arriba restaurante de lujo, pero la comida es deliciosa. Mis preferencias personales son pizzas, y entre ellos la funghi, pero otros platos también son muy buenos y llenos de sabor. Y la selección de vinos italianos es muy decente. Normalmente sólo nos presenta y una mesa disponible.

Llegamos sin reserva y donde recibieron con un camarero amable que nos acomodaron enseguida. La comida y la bebida aquí fue increíble y nos pareció que estaba bien de precio. Sin embargo, cuando pagamos la factura, la camarera tomó los pagos en efectivo y tarjeta de distancia y luego volvimos y afirmaba que tenía bajo pagado por £20. 00. Estamos 100% seguro de que habíamos pagado la cantidad correcta como los 6 de nosotros había sido a través de ella un par de veces. La camarera debería haber contado delante de nosotros. Donde también confiando y a regañadientes pagado más. Esta fue una gran decepción teniendo en cuenta todo lo demás era preciosa.

Lovely Italian restaurant in what used to be a pub. Very friendly family run business. Excellent menu of gourmet pizzas and pastas. Focaccia is delicious. Menu had a variety of options but wasn't overwhelming. Family friendly.

How the mighty have fallen. Utterly silly, pretentious service. Overblown faux enthusiasm in describing food, which at best was poor. Under-seasoned, under-dressed, underwhelming in every respect. Oh and the prices- ridiculously high. sommelier very keen to over-pour wine at every juncture. Vile clientelle with more money, botox and houses than taste. Utter crap. Avoid at all costs.

Upstairs it is the old Assaggi back again - excellent Italian food which tastes like home cooking. Wonderful friendly Italian service and a good but not extensive wine list. All in a laid back, simple, stylish relaxing surroundings. (I am not certain about downstairs. We did not eat there, and it looked very different) It is expensive, but it is worth paying for.

Disappointing. £16 for three scallops is unjustifiable. Fregola was hugely disappointing. Very overcooked seafood, therefore difficult to ascertain the quality. The one high point was the veal steak, which in fairness is difficult to get wrong. Pasta was flavoured without much skill or subtlety. Overpriced. A let-down.

We love the upstairs restaurant at Assaggi - would go as often as we could get in, really - its a small dining room, and were so happy when it ended up remaining in the area. We so looked forward to the new bar below - the neighbourhood can use some great, simple, hight quality easy-going Italian. Meat starter mediocre - offered 'focaccia' which turned out to be a basic pizza crust (price £8!) - I had a pumpkin gnocchi - completely terrible. He had a pizza, rather fine. The most basic meal, plus a couple beers and wine, £90. Big time sad. There is a huge opportunity to get this place right, the pricing is so far off for the quality right now, even considering London/ Notting Hill prices - the food was beyond basic and bland

This is a nice spot serving Italian food, if you are missing the tastes of Italy!! You can get octopus, prawns, veal, venison, branzino, pasta, for example. It is not a huge menu, but enough that any fan of Italian food will be happy!

We arrived in this small Italian restaurant at 6pm on a Monday after a long journey and to start with were the only diners in the room. We went straight to main and I chose a tagliatelle whilst my wife had a pizza. Mine was tasty and well cooked but the pizza was very poor with just a garlic base and very few ingredients on top. To be fare the menu does offer extra ingredients but there should be way more on a base pizza without adding extras! Whilst we were eating our food another diner entered and sat to our left. He ordered a bottle of wine, took a sip and sent it back as not good enough. A second bottle arrived and that was sent back too as was a third! Only when he got the fourth bottle did he declare himself happy. Then his soup arrived and that was also sent back as being too cold! We had to leave at that point but I do hope he enjoyed his main! To sum up, the place was clean and comfortable with attentive staff but the food was poor to adequate at best.

Great food, wine, clients, service... you all have to go... it is like a portal to Italy...The homemade tagliolini was superb. Cheese selection so tasty. The flavours are so pure.

Really enjoyed a great meal at Assaggi. There's a new bar downstairs to enjoy pre-dinner aperol spritzers and a pleasant dining room upstairs. The menu is in Italian and the waiter explains everything. Our starters of pear salad and baby squid were exquisite. Luckily, the main courses turned out to be just as good - simply cooked sea bass and my favourite, calves liver. All in all a top quality experience. One of the best in London.

You think you've experienced fine Italian food? Well if you haven't been here, think again. The staff make it even more enjoyable . Has been a long time but hopefully going again next week , can't wait .

I had read some other TripAdvisor reviews before going, so was expecting great things. We were not disappointed. The food was great and the staff attentive and friendly. The crab and tuna tartar starters were both great as was my wife's liver and my veal cutlet. We had the bitter chocolate sorbet for dessert, another brilliant dish. Altogether a lovely but rather expensive evening out.
