ASK Italian - Winchester in Winchester

Called in, hoping we would be able to get a table as we hadn't booked. We were seated without a problem. Drinks ordered and meal chosen. We ordered some olives and rosemary bread with olive oil as a joint starter. I had the cesear salad with the dressing on the side, my husband went for carbonarer. Both were plentiful and extremely well presented.. I decided to have the Baileys tirimasu whilst the husband went for the Chocolate Etna, both were delicious. We then ordered a coffee each, this was the only disappointment. It was weak and tasteless. We complained to our server, and he offered to remake them or take off the bill. We decided not to have them. In all it was an extremely pleasant experience, and we would return next time we visit Winchester.

The quality of food was definitely substandard and disappointing as this is a restaurant we go to probably once a month. We shall go again and hope it was just a one-off! The welcoming lemon flavoured shot was very watered down. The pasta sauce used to have much more flavour so without adding salt and the Parmesan it would be pretty bland. As a vegetarian, one expects more flavour. Good service and atmosphere.

Service very good but food was awful. It was not proper Italian food and looked as if it had been invented by a child.Never again.

WOW... We arrived without a booking early on a Saturday evening, and we were greeted by the lovely Stefan , who served us . He could not have been better. Oh my gosh, what a great brand embasssidor he was . His attitude was so fresh, so positive. He was professional and knowledgeable, and the food we had was absolutely delightful. He gave us a great table for two by the front door in the window. The atmosphere was buzzy , bright, and lively.:)) But not too loud . It was busy. We will 100% go back and go often . A party of 10 for a birthday celebration. The starters were slow to come out, we finished them at 8.45, our table was booked at 7.15!! Asked for tap water at the beginning, not given. Had to ask again when we were eating our main meal. Eventually arrived with dirty glasses, looked covered in dishwasher salt, very cloudy. A mix up with paying for the wine, took so long to sort out. A very average experience.

They tell you there are no tables but there are loads upstairs you just have to book online .. ridiculous! Unwelcoming, bad service and not recommended.

Service was fantastic. Food was below average and drinks and food so overpriced it was laughable. Terrible value for money in tired surroundings. Feels like a struggling business trying to stay afloat by bumping their prices. Doomed to fail in my opinion and won’t be returning. One to avoid

Visited recently with my husband to celebrate our anniversary and had a delicious carbonara. A young, blonde waitress served us (name on the bill was Lucy but wasn’t sure if this is her name as there was a few waiters) who was absolutely lovely and attentive to us throughout the evening and made sure we were taken care of. The service was truly incredible and I highly recommend to others.

Do not go to this restaurant. Appaling customer care. Bookings don't matter. We booked earlier in the day. Then went back to be told we would have to queue regardless. Waiter in charge very rude. We walked out!

We visited in a large group of over 10 on a busy Saturday night and they managed to get us in. We also had small children with us and they were very accommodating. It’s a lovely old building with lots of character. The menu was good and catered for gluten free diners well. We were served promptly all things considered when see how busy they were. The food was ok, maybe a little bit over cooked for the pizza for example. But overall a lovely meal with a lovely ambience. Thank you.

We booked but still had to wait outside in the rain for 10/15 minutes. We were shown to our table and you could see the staff were under pressure as used crockery and cutlery were piling up around the place. We ordered on line as no staff came. The starter came but no drinks so we asked if they could chase up the drinks. Still no drinks. The mains came- two of which had chilli- still no drinks. We asked again- still no drinks. We went and got a bottle of tap water and took glasses out of the dishwasher. After the mains were finished the drinks came- to the embarrassment of the server. The ladies toilets were in a very bad way- one blocked and overflowing and the other was bad. There was no toilet tissue. If I had seen the toilets first I wouldn’t have eaten there. Very disappointing.

Managed to get a booking for a late lunch on the same day, given Winchester is rammed this time of year with the Christmas markets and a lot of other restaurants were fully booked I was worried we may be in for an inferior experience, but not at all. The upstairs area is great - old wooden beams (this must be an ancient building) bedecked with Ivy and fairy lights made it very Christmassy. The service was great if a little slow (the place was packed though) and the food once ordered came very quickly, and was excellent. The Crayfish and Prawn Tagliatelli was particularly good!

The food was OK but not brilliant. I also think it was fairly priced for what we got. What really did annoy me was the our mains were brought out way before we finished our starters. The whole think seemed very rushed. I know it was probably one of the busiest weekends of the year but it all felt very rushed

I would normally read recommendations on here before booking anything, but options were limited. However reading the reviews after we visited I wasn’t surprised to read the delays on the drinks and food being like warm. Our drinks arrived a few minutes after the main meal and it wasn’t the worst Pizza I’ve ever had, but it certainly wasn’t the best. The staff were nice enough but I wouldn’t go again personally. It’s a chain, so expect food like it’s from a chain and you won’t be disappointed.

We went for a meal on Saturday evening and it was carnage. Been sat for nearly 30mins before managing to get a drinks and food order in. Had tried to use the app but it didnt support everything on the menu. Starters brought out with the main course. Bits of the meal forgotten, no parmesan offered despite asking, drinks coming out 5 mins after the food. Food luke warm .

I have used Ask Italian before and previously had a good experience. However, on this occasion I was greatly disappointed. We had booked a table in advance and arrived at the agreed time. We were shown to our seat and a drink order was taken fairly promptly. There was a short delay for our food order to be taken. We waited approx 15-20 mins for our starter to arrive. The quality of the food was good. We then waited approaching 40 mins for our main course to arrive. During this time a couple who had been sat at the table next to us had finished their drink and due to the excessive delay, although they had ordered their food, they left the restaurant without paying for their drink. The staff did not seem too bothered and came and re set the table for another customer. I am not familiar with the Winchester branch of Ask and so they could have just been having a really bad Friday night. Luckily for my wife and myself we were not in a hurry to get anywhere. The delay was very poor and no apologies were offered. I would avoid Ask in Winchester if I were to visit the City again.

Never again what is it about some chain restaurants who think it’s complete acceptable to keep you waiting to order , then you wait 20 plus mins for a drink once you placed your order . Then god forbid you want another drink !! Equally no comprehension that you have young children that will get tied , restless , so let’s keep them waiting a further 30-45 mins for your food . Apart from the carbonara very average food !! Will and should have suck to the stable in Winchester , honestly very poor food & service . Should and will

We booked this lovely restaurant for a group of six…we arrived an hour early which wasn’t a problem for the wonderful staff. The service could not have been better & the food delicious. We would definitely return.

After getting married, we decided to book our family into ask to celebrate the occasion. We have always loved Ask Italian and this is by far our favourite one. We are so unbelievably grateful for how amazing the service was. There was a fare few of us but that didn’t have any affect on the service we received! They had kindly given us the entire top floor to ourselves, decorated the room for us and provided us with complimentary Prosecco (lovely touch). Despite the large volume of food, everything was top quality. Not a single person had anything bad to say about the food they had. We would like to give a special thank you to TJ. He pretty much served us the entire time on his own. We appreciate all staff that were involved before and during our stay (all so welcoming and helpful) but TJ definitely did a fantastic job. He was always checking we had glasses full and made sure plates/glasses were cleared quickly. Overall you guys helped to make our day so special! We can’t thank you enough.

We visited for a midweek lunch with friends. The restaurant was extremely quiet with only 3-4 tables occupied but the service was terrible. We waited 25 minutes for our drinks orders to be taken and the food took even longer. No complaints about the food as it was fine but the garlic bread that we ordered never arrived. The staff were in a group talking, and ignoring customers. We will think twice about visiting again.

Very close to my hotel so decided to try the place. Greeted by a friendly young lady and quickly seated but warned the pizza oven was broken and there was no risotto available which for an Italian restaurant is a bit strange but thankfully I wanted pasta. Had bruchetta as starter, very nice although a little sweet. Had gnocchi arriabatta. Very nice and full of flavour. All in good food, service a little slow but very polite. All in pleasant but that's all.

Booked a table for myself, fiancée and 18 month old son. Arrived ( admittedly a few minutes late) seated, asked for a high chair for son, no high chair arrived. We waited 10/15 mins for someone to come take out drinks order and also so we could again enquire about a high chair, this did not happen and people who arrived after us had been served drinks and had food order taken during this time. Myself and fiancée decided to go somewhere else for lunch due to the poor service from the foh team.

I went into the Ask Italian whilst I was staying in Winchester. I always have their lemonade at the end of the meal as it clears the palate I had their Arcani which was delicious. I used to use Ask Italian restaurants regularly and I had forgotten how delicious the Arcani were. All the staff that I met were all so friendly and helpful. When I say that I am of course including all of the boys and girls that we do not see without whom the Restaurant would not run so smoothly. I am sure that I will be eating in this Ask again.

This place was a surprising gem! The food was delicious. We got the charcuterie board and some folded garlic mozzarella bread. Very tasty. Decor was very nice and wait staff was good. Would definitely go back.

Had to be a 5! Staff, Managers, Service and Tasty! What attracted us was salad and risotto ... and very interesting starter ... a beetroot/mozzarella ball. Shay, manager was personable and forthcoming with recommendations. Larg was just as helpful. We arrived late evening, but no problem. Their complimentary homemade lemonade shot was quenching! When I called to book a party of 20 just a few days before they were very accommodating and requested us to preorder by the day before. We were treated well and they were patient and attentive to all our needs. All the mains were delivered at the same time (almost all of them different!). TJ was great and we are already planning a return visit later in the year. Highly recommend.

The restaurant is located on the High Street, so central. We did not book and they found us a table. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food was tasty too. We tried the calamari and crayfish pasta. The portions were generous in our opinion.
