Pizza Express in Winchester

I've been here so many times. We're local and it's always lovely to simply call in with a hungry appetite. Evi the manager is delightful, she always greets us with a smile. The restuarant is full of families and couples so there's a nice buzz but never overwelming if you just want a pleasant dinner with loved ones. We've been to just about eveywhere in Winchester but this is our favourite 'go to'.. never dissapointing, always deliscious.

Nice food as always from Pizza Express. Very slow service unfortunately, ok bathrooms a bit worn down and dirty. But overall nice.

Absolutely angry and upset. Last night was my wife’s birthday there was 12 of us. Firstly the service was awful, the wait for drinks was horrendous, the wait for food was a joke. I had a lasagne which was so tiny and not nice it was unbelievable and charged £16 for the privilege. The other pizzas everyone had were not that great to be honest. Staff did not come and ask if everything was alright if we wanted drinks or anything. To top it off they put a £40 service charge on which was disgusting. At the beginning of the night we asked the waitress if we could all pay separately have separate bills to save the agro at the end of the night to which the waitress said yes that’s fine as she walked off laughing. When the bill came it was all together so my wife spent 45 minutes on her birthday working out who had what and getting frustrated. I would have put a massive complaint in on the night but it was my wife’s birthday and didn’t want to upset her. I will never go here again and would not recommend.

I had never been to a pizza express before and this visit has convinced me to never go again. As we entered the restaurant we weren’t greeted at all. Meaning we had to awkwardly stand there until a Waittress finally acknowledged us. We then had to wait for a table to be cleaned so we could be seated for our booking, which wasn’t an issue. But the restaurant wasn’t that busy and every other table was left dirty. From start to finish of my visit not one table around us was cleaned. Service was incredibly slow. Not only did we watch our mains sit at the kitchen for a while before being brought over, we then had to wait 30 minutes for our plates to be cleared once we’d actually finished them. And in all honesty the food wasn’t that great, the pizza definitely wasn’t worth the money. When our plates were finally cleared, we weren’t offered a pudding menu or the bill and we were just left there! In conclusion, customer service is absolutely terrible, the food is mediocre and the high prices don’t reflect the quality/portion size of the food. I do not recommend whatsoever.

Enjoyable pizza and decent wine at a reasonable price. The premises are not the best, which is understandable due to the listed building status imposing constraints, however some of the avoidable mistakes cannot be overlooked: one menu for 2 people, lipstick on wine glass, chairs covered in food debris etc.

Service can be a little hit n miss but generally good, nice food, reasonably priced and fast service.

Dined in at the end of a tour, they kindly found us a table off the cuff, although there were many tables free, just not cleared. The same was upstairs where we were seated, cluttered table around us although not many tables taken. The food was nice, i finished my meal as did my husband. Just a shame about the clutter and mess.

Really disappointed. Restaurant was cold and very messy. Sat at a broken table so had to ask to be moved. The waiter had to be prompted to take our order. The food was ok but the pizza bases were soggy. Staff too busy pulling each others hair and chatting to clean. Won’t be going back.

I get that the price has gone up for everything but £8 for 4 pigs 🐖 in blankets is obscene and my pizza didn't have enough cheese or tomato to cover the base. Sorry but £50 for 1 starter 2 mains and 2 drinks when it's not the best, I would rather stay home. I would like to shout out to one of the managers. My diabetic husband had low sugars and he was really good at getting us a sugary drink.....quickly.

I find it’s always a bit ‘hit and miss’ with pizza express. Some are excellent and others, like this one, could do with a bit of ‘love’ ie a good clean - unless they are going for a ‘rustic’ vibe!! Just felt a bit grubby with tacky tables and staff sitting around chatting!! Maybe it was the time of day we visited - somewhere between lunch and dinner, it was quiet so you’d expect things to be clean and tidy - though the service was friendly and quick. Pizza quality good and nice location.

We have been going here for around ten years as a team of friends catching up, but this visit was dreadful. The starters of dough balls and halloumi bites (underwhelming presentation) arrived after a 45 minute wait, then the pizza main courses a further 50 minute wait, arrived at quarter to ten ( we had put in our order at 8.15pm.) The Christmas wreath "special" well, not sure which Christmas it had been celebrating but it was dry, burnt in places and shrivelled and looked nothing like the glam pizza express marketing pics! Definitely not worth the £15 it cost. The Legerra pizza idea is to have a reasonable hole removed from the inside of the base and filled with salad. The problem is the middle hole has gotten much bigger, leaving a small circumference of pizza, poor value indeed in these times. The other issue was the "manager", his attitude was dismissive, disinterested and frankly argumentative about our concerns, citing a "dough issue" as cause of the evenings problems. We received a free drink each and a discount off the bill, which was something but not enough to encourage us to EVER go back. We also heard his "managerial" response to another irate customer, to whom he was directly and downright rude. Shame , used to love it there 😔

Worst service we have ever experienced. 45 minutes for a starter which was well below average then another 50 minutes for the main, which was a cremated pizza. Nothing like the one advertised - We spoke to the "manager" and showed him the food which was basically a shallow burnt base with little topping...he showed no professionalism at all, not even an apology . The food was late and awful and a small discount didn't suffice. We have been going here for many years but I think that boat has sailed. Shame

Delivery was late. Pizza and desserts were awful quality and cold. They offered to send out delivery again but we only wanted refund which they refused

I love pizza express, but this one has made me seriously think if I wish to visit again. We had a variety of servers, my partner in crime has a Gluten intolerance and this caused a few issues. First server told us no problem with order, then next server says can't order that pizza if want gluten. So need to order again, including me, even though I'm having the same. Then different server has to bring my friends drink, because I stated she still hadn't received it. We both ordered a Leggera to begin with, which has salad in the middle (I'm sure before it had more than just salad leaves). Why my friend couldn't have this is strange, only difference with normal pizza is middle has been cut out. Anyhow I digress. Pizza arrives and mine looks messy, salad leaves outside the hole in the middle and some of the dressing is on the pizza - very slap dash. My friends pizza had far too much sauce for the base, infact that was mainly what it was and she wasn't very happy if I'm honest. We ordered coffees with small dessert, run out of what my friend wanted (not a happy bunny by now and just wants to leave). My coffee was nice but my friend left most of hers as not happy and the staff just didn't seem to care. The service over all left a lot to be desired, we will definitely not be back.

Waited for table to be cleaned even though quite. Waited for a straw while they talked. Asked for more drinks to go with food, but they came when we finished. And to cap it all off, had a screaming kid on another table but so small, you can't move.

Really disappointed I came here for a family celebration and firstly I have a family member with a disability and the was too many stairs then we ordered and we even mentioned that is family member was diabetic and their food took an awfully long time so that wasn’t amazing the food was average but still not as amazing as we have had in other pizza expresses then we ordered desserts an it took an hour to come and it wasn’t even a very difficult order and the toilets were down another set of stairs so definitely do not come here if you have a disability it was absolutely boiling in the building and not even that the pizza express app that always works for us in other pizza expresses so never come here needs major improvement more staff bigger kitchen so overall awful experience for us do not come here.

Thursday lunchtime, checked the website which showed as having tables to book from 12.45 on wards at 15 min intervals. As we were nearby we thought be easier to just pop in. Lady opened the door, asked my husband if he had a booking, slammed door in his face when he said no saying they were fully booked. I went back in and explained that no worries, we'd definitely go elsewhere, but just to let her know the website was shown as being fully available all afternoon (there was 1 table of people in the restaurant.) And that she might want to explain to her manager the lack of custom. I walked out and she came running out pleading 'lack of staff'..... so to the lady working Thurs lunchtime in an otherwise empty restaurant, I hope your manager realises you turn away paying customers through sheer bone idleness. The whole world is short staffed I'm afraid, deal with it or change jobs.

I always go to this immaculate establishment; whenever travelling across the South of England. Amazing service, staff, chefs, and cooking. The restaurant never has a line whenever I go to it, and has a lovely, and roomy atmosphere. I will always order a Hot American pizza, and I recommend choosing the option of the chef placing upon the pizza, jalapeñi.

Came here for a meal using Tesco vouchers. Nice location next to the city mill. Sat next to the window so had good view of the river next to us and then watching people pass by. Had very friendly waitress who looked after us well. Food was delicious and always tastes better when you’re paying less because of vouchers. They take Amex here too which is good. All in all a good experience. Would come back again. Just a tip - the tables could do with a good wipe, were slightly sticky.

I have eaten at many Pizza Express restaurants and I have eaten at the Winchester branch a fair few times over the years and it is always sadly disappointing. Staff don't seem bothered,food was ok when the correct food did arrive, drinks were warm and underwhelming.

Zero service from staff, unclean tables, no cutlery. Worst Pizza Express I’ve been to. The food was appalling in terms of quantity and size of portions. My 8 year and 10 year old kids ordered adult pizzas and were still hungry afterwards as so small. I ordered extra mushrooms, but my pizza had less than one mushroom on it. Order a jug of water which took 45 mins to arrive, water was Luke warm with unclean glasses. Would steer well clear of this establishment.

After initially getting the order slightly wrong (hard egg on pizza instead of soft) great pizza resulted. I always order the same thing (if it ain't broke...) and here there was slightly more pepper on the pizza than Pizzaexpress usually serve. But it was nice - I like pepper! Staff very attentive. Quite small inside and tables close to one another but I came for the food which did not disappoint!

Absolutely the worst pizza express we’ve ever been to! We came with our 3 kids for a 5pm meal, in 1 hour 20 minutes of waiting we hadn’t had our main course When the main course came 2 of the dishes didn’t have the core...

Absolutely appalling two pizzas takeaway last night. Probably prepared hours in advance and reheated. Sparse additions despite the cost. Basic flavour was just about there but these dessicated bad value offerings were really awful.

Dry edges of the pizza base with very sparse extra toppings that we added - which are in itself costly. Good service otherwise.

Ordered two pizzas - one on normal base and one on romana. They got these the wrong way round - not ideal but forgivable. The extra charge for the dip is cheeky especially when you receive such a pathetic portion.

Service was excellent in this Pizza Express and food was delivered swiftly. Good, hot and tasty - exactly what we wanted! Loved the pesto dough balls.

We were wating an hour for our food then it comes out all burn the pizza is back , and the toilets are so small you can bearly move in them

Disappointed with our experience at this well-established chain restaurant. Visited during a fairly quiet dinner service, with a booking. We were greeted and seated and then took our time to browse the menu. Restaurant looks lovely from outside and whilst appearing rather small, has ample seating and well maintained toilet facilities. Once we had studied the menu we placed our order and then waited. Our drinks were obviously with us first, however I was highly disappointed at the length of time we waited for our lasagne and pizza mains. Having been seated, we waited close to one hour for the mains, with the starter dough balls appearing after around 45 minutes. The dough balls were delicious, the cheese topping was satisfactory but the portion size was small and I wasn’t impressed at the value for money offering on this menu item. The lasagne was full of flavour and of high quality, the dish and presentation was exemplary. Very impressed however again, in my opinion the portion size could have been slightly larger for the price. Pizza, delicious. High quality and fruitful with toppings, obviously a staple item on their menu and one that the cooks do a great job preparing too! Really sad though how after this tasty food, we had to wait an excessive amount of time to simply pay our bill. Other customers seated after us were also getting their food first. The extremely slow service and poor value for money offering has led to me leaving a two star review. I wouldn’t visit again unfortunately as the service didn’t impress me and the bill was approximately £44.00 for two mains, one drink and a starter. There are various other establishments in the local area offering better service and value for money. We did not receive a farewell greeting.

A great location, next to the city mill. We were welcomed upon arrival, asked where we wanted to sit, and given time to review the menu before ordering. Staff were friendly and attentive and food brought out on time. The cheesecake is particularly good.

We came last weekend for my daughters 8th birthday with 15 super excited children. We had a great spot upstairs and Louise and her team did an amazing job looking after all the kids (as well as thew adults). Would definitely recommend!

We had a lovely seat by the river. It was a very cold day but extra heaters had been put on which kept us warm and cosy. Food was lovely and plenty of variety on the menu. Food arrived promptly and Eve who served us was delightful. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal.

Food was as expected was fresh, hot and tasty so full marks to that. However, what bugged me was the presentation, the dough balls was flat and smashed down flat, it did not represent the circular shape as advertised. The consistency of the sauce, I felt was not he same as other branches. The sauces I felt were watered down and a tad bit oily. The atmosphere here also felt a bit dull and gloomy. But the staff were responsive and happy to help. Overall it was a good experience

Reserved a table, but wasn't told until we got here that it was upstairs - and wasn't asked about my mobility until I had already limped up the circular stairscase! Additionally, the toilets are in the basement. Pizza was burnt around the outer edges and additional ingredients missed off. Service however, was excellent and issues corrected when addressed, although having service on one floor and the kitchen on another leads to food coming at different times which is not ideal

Brilliant restaurant, staff were under pressure from Christmas market and Christmas parties. It's a small restaurant next to the historic corn mill, food great, service exceptional, staff, especially server and manager, humour, entertainment and good food, what's not to like.

I had La Reine pizza. It was mediocre, the ingredients were OK but the base was too thin and crunchy also thanks to the electric oven. If you're looking for an authentic Italian pizza, this is not the place for you. The service was friendly.

We were visiting Winchester and wanted a risk free dinner. Pizza Express can usually be relied on for great food and this one was great. However, it was very busy, the staff did seem somewhat over stretched and food did take a little longer to arrive than usual. Otherwise, all good.

First time at this particular PE and unlikely to repeat. Of 4 pizzas ordered there were problems with 2. One arrived with a hole in the middle, basically because the base was too thin and the topping tore a hole in it. One intended as a Romano base (as per menu) arrived as a Classic. The starter doughballs were cold, I'm sure they should be warm. Portions all seemed less generous and more pricey. Finally, although the building is all Tudor beamed and characterful the tables felt of lesser quality than school classroom desks, very plasticky, and seemingly designed for the kids parties that seemed to be the main purpose of the area upstairs.

This is a great meeting place. Pizza Express have done it again. We'll done! Great service from all staff.

Arrived at 8pm, and seated upstairs - quick service to start and ordered our starters and mains at 8.10. We were then ignored, and had to ask twice for another drink - at 8.50 we asked where our starters were, to which we were told...

We went on a very busy Friday night and it was pretty clear that the team was getting overwhelmed. Our server was nice and friendly but our food took over an hour to arrive. Halfway through the wait, we were informed that some items we ordered had run out so we had to change the orders on the fly. When we did get our starters, the table next to us were quite disappointed as they had arrived and ordered before us but hadn't received their starters yet. It wasn't the end of the world but I'd caution against busy times of the week.

Service rubbish waited over an hour for food. Too much focus on takeaways.

I've only given this place 2 for the salad which was surprisingly delicious. We called in yesterday to a virtually empty restaurant to be asked: had we booked?! We were luckily given a table for two. Atmosphere was horrendous, not welcoming and the manager/hostess (?) was not very interested in service and dressed not very professionally. Service was very slow due to a party of children upstairs and nt enough staff to deal with ordinary clients. Table was dirty, chairs covered in crumbs, had to send dirty glass back. Then when you looked around the building itself the windows were dirty and cobwebs hanging from light fittings. We had to ask for our salad- a very long wait for something emptied out of bags into bowls. Needless to say I give the place 2 due to what turned out to be a delicious salad. But we will not return.

I come to picup the order from Pizza Express the kichan staff is was s-o rude is no mack the order i need to whait 25 minutes is was s-o ungry is not farst time when happening, nobody is no do nathing about this.

Food is usually good and served promptly. Was a little noisy due to a children's party.

Firstly, the Pizzas, when they arrived, were very nice. The problem that this restaurant has, is that the space available to cook the pizzas is not adequate for the number that have to be produced. This is not a criticism of the people preparing them, they worked extremely hard and the quality did not suffer. The number of deliveries and take out orders however, meant that we had to wait over 40 minutes for our order.

Truly awful; understaffed, disorganised and chaotic with manager cooking pizza, many ingredients running out, in house diners clearly deprioritised in favour of delivery orders; we used to love this our local branch but it will be a long time til we return. Avoid until they...

We had high hopes but it became clear that the take away orders were taking priority over the seated customers in the restaurant. I sat and watched pizza after pizza come out of the oven, only to be put into takeaway boxes and into a foil-lined delivery bag. Service was painfully slow - about an hour for some dough balls to appear. When they did arrive they were over done and a little shriveled. The pizzas that eventually found their way to our table were crunchy round the edges and obviously burnt... to the point of being black around the base and crust. I think the 'chefs' were clearly taking a change that people wouldn't make comment due to the time taken for the first attempt to arrive. What I mean is, anybody could see the degree of burnt pizza going to the tables and should have chosen to redo them. Staffing levels were inadequate to meet the demands of both restaurant customers AND the steady influx of Deliveroo, Just Eat, Uber Eats, or whichever services came through the door and hovered right next to where we were eating. Not the best experience, compared to previous visits to this and other Pizza Express venues.

Visited again for some great pizza. Had the bbq brisket on a pizza which was delicious

I know it was a Friday night so expected it to be busy. Waitress was friendly but took 25 for a drink then another 20 mins for the starter. The halloumi bites were burnt and more coating then halloumi. Then took another 30 mins for mains. Gave up with dessert and took another 20 mins to get there attention for the bill. Not a great table either. Will try a different branch next time and hope it is a better service.

After many trips to various Pizza Express restaurants, I must admit that I was let down by the Winchester branch. Firstly, the building and atmosphere was a let down unlike other branches. The food was overpriced for smaller portions, and the pizzas were poorly made....

Loved the pizza express that used to exist in our town, but since the pandemic the Winchester branch is the closest. Unfortunately this branch is very disorganised, lost our order, the staff had a fight in the open kitchen and it was an unpleasant experience all round. Would not go back to that restaurant but will go back to Pizza Express as the pizza is very good and not greasy take away quality

This is a general customer service / restaurant going above and beyond review!! Utterly impressed by the staff at Winchester pizza express. Today we had an awful accident in the park across the road with our 20 month old. She was in a lot of pain and shock (as were me and my husband). They sat us straight down gave lots of ice for a compress. Offered us food and drink. Gave our daughter lots to play with including some raw dough (to be like play dough) for her to play with and distract her from the pain while they called a taxi for the hospital. Thank you so much - pleased to say it was all minor and she’s fine. Times like that when you just need people to help and not cause further fuss or issues. Very grateful. Thank you.

We had a most enjoyable evening, it is Pizza Express & when we arrived it was very busy, the staff were charming & seated us at a lovely table. The pizzas we had were superb in every way, the wine and then food were served...

On first impressions from outside it appeared quite small, a beautiful building in a lovely part of Winchester. Positioned right by the river Itchen, it is such a fantastic location. As you walk in, it is clear how the building opens up and then it becomes evident that the seating continues upstairs giving this place quite a decent amount of seating. We were located next to a window looking out over the rushing water from the weir just behind the building. Also just opposite the pizza preparation area, the guys working that were amazing. Very skilled and great personalities. The table staff were also very good, very friendly and helpful and also very attentive. The food was superb, the Calamari was perfectly cooked, and had literally just been cooked. I chose the Diavolo which was definitely the right choice, had a good balance between spicy and sweet and the base was perfect. The cheesecake was delicious, so sweet and a great mixture of flavours, the salted caramel and the popcorn are a good match. If you are looking for a great meal in a lovely location with great staff and fantastic food, then this is definitely worth a visit.

Very nice and cosy place, clean and comfy lovely staff. Pizza Express is serving very thin crust but that's okay cause the menu looks so fancy and the food is just great. They have very good desserts as well. Not a place for disabled though.

I I received an order pizza express. Which is only my seven minutes was cold as ice cream. Guess they didn't hear of cooking in the oven. They took 45 minutes and hung up the phone. Lovely people eh

Do not believe all the Karen’s on here. This pizza express is fantastic!!!! The team were amazing from start to finish. They looked after us like we were family! They looked after my partners food whilst the little one ate so it came out hot...

Simply amazing! You can't really go wrong with Pizza Express but the service we received from the second we arrived was 1st class! The food was outstanding! We'd just done a very long walk along the River Itchen so to be greeted in such a friendly way followed by such amazing food was a perfect. Food was quick, service was quick, the wine was cold, the sun was shining! The atmosphere was great. We didn't want to leave! We were in Winchester for 3 days and this was the best meal we had. The Jalapeño Dough Balls were super spicy but delicious and the Leggera pollo ad astra was cooked just perfect.

My friend and I visited on Saturday evening. The food was delicious and the staff were very attentive. A special thank you to James, our waiter, who was fantastic despite being very busy. We'll definitely go there again soon.
