This is now known as Briar bakery! What an incredible bakery, such a friendly welcome, really made a fuss of our kids! We ended up buying half the store so glad we did it all tasted so fresh and delicious. We can't wait to return. The focaccia and flapjack in particular were amazing!!

We always used Ella when we were in Ashburton on her opening days. We came in today, the shop has been rebranded as Briar although it’s still a quality bakery selling largely same day home baked stuff which overlaps with the predecessors offerings. Sourdough is brought in from another Baker. The friendly lady on the till said that Briar had been for a month or so. We bought a good sourdough loaf (£4) today but will experiment with other delights next time.

I live on Dartmoor and visit the bakery regularly. The appetising aroma that greets you as you enter the bakery is exciting and very tempting. Ella and her team can be seen making cakes, tarts or bread. Everything is made with ingredients of the highest quality and looks and tastes delicious. I love her walnut bread and lemon tart. A different range of cakes and pastries is available during opening hours between Wednesday and Saturday, but get there early or everything will have been sold! I am not related to anyone working at the bakery! It's fabulous!

I feel privileged to live in a town with Ella's Bakery! The quality is excellent and Ella closes when she's sold out. That says something, isn't it? Such an excellent job is done, by Ella and her assistants. While realizing that it's working at early hours every day when the bread needs to be in the shop and cakes ready for the customers at opening times. It's all organic quality as well, a very good taste.

Excellent artisan bread makers, sadly not open every weekday whilst we were there but they deserve a few days off, given the necessary early start for baking and long hours. Good choice of breads, with daily specials. We had a superb olive ciabatta and also their sourdough breads. I did also try the cinnamon swirl/roll but sadly found it a bit dry, although chocolate slice was lovely. Pleasant staff, very friendly and helpful. Also sell very good locally produced proper Dartmoor honey - not just "Devon" honey like lots of other places nearby.

Went into the store due to the good reviews and small proximity to where we were staying. I was given a run down of what was available which unfortunately was limited even at 8.30. I took the chocolate twists and cinnamon rolls but on eating the twists the children complained they tasted cheesy. Went back to the store and asked what they were and was told they were Parmesan and olive twists! A bit different and not a misunderstanding! No apology was offered or an exchange so I left and went to the co-op which also does fresh pastries and they were much more appreciated by the children! Such a shame and due to the poor reaction of the staff i didn’t go back the rest of the holiday

Wandering through Ashburton to where my son and his family are moving, and came across Ella's. What an extraordinary bakery! The most delicious sourdough and hot cross buns we've ever tasted, the friendliest staff, and a bakery atmosphere which made us feel we were in a French market town. Okay, this may sound like a bunch of hyperbole, but it's the truth as far as we're concerned. And from a read of these reviews, we're not the only ones. We've been around the global block a few times and Ella's bread is simply some of the best in the world. It doesn't need a lot of clever doctoring or gimmicks. The word is integrity. Ella's bread has integrity. It is beautiful English bread, straight-up and tasty as anything. What is on offer varies from day to day, but you are sure to come out of that bakery with something outstanding. Her sourdough loaves cannot be equalled. Ella is a great baker-- she is an artist among bakers. She seems to know something about bread that no one else knows. The shop staff are first rate, too. Genuinely friendly and kind and helpful. The atmosphere of the shop is neighbourly, local, genuine, thoughtful, and full of heart. If you're on the A38 and passing Ashburton, it will be well worth your while to stop in. I travel a couple of hours regularly to bring home loaves of Ella's bread, thinking nothing of the effort because the bread is that good. Please bear in mind that Ella's shop is open Wednesday thro' Saturday as of August 2018. Turn up early if you can because the bread sells out quickly, especially on Saturdays. While you're waiting for your bread to be wrapped, check out Ella's cakes and pastries. They are totally scrumptious and rather on the irresistible side!

It's Christmastime at Ella's and the large Christmas cakes are already sold out -- before the beginning of December! I bagged one of Ella's last medium Christmas cakes -- hooray! Things sell out quickly here because the quality is quite simply second to none. Not only that, her outstanding bakery appears to be run on an intuition that "small is beautiful", so the shop itself is warmly unassuming and the staff genuinely friendly, helpful, and kind. Did I say unassuming? Well, yes, but don't let that fool you, because Ella is one brilliant and savvy award-winning baker -- and her staff do a great job, too. I strongly recommend that you stop in and try one of Ella's frangipane mince pies -- they are SO GOOD!!! She has taken the humble mince pie and knocked it for six -- off the pitch and into a new universe of yumminess! We've ordered lots to collect before Christmas. The white breads are best eaten same day as they have an amazing fresh texture which you don't get any more from the more industrial producers.Ella sells a narrow but varied range of tasty cake portions, all of which are excellent for a morning treat with coffee! This shop is a great asset to the town, and we know some people who drive ten miles to buy from Ella' and also from the two excellent delis in town. Cheese scones very good - all bread freshly baked when finished shop closes! This is only one of many lovely shops in Ashburton town centre.

An amazing bakery, the bread is amazing and I also have tried the chocolate cake which was divine and Eccles cakes which are simply the best I've ever tried. Closes when sold out so can be early but this is truly a fabulous find. A tiny shop where you can see Ella baking and then cooking the goods which she then places in baskets on front of her for you to purchase. A must visit in Ashburton

The bread and cakes are amazing. There's always a queue and they close when they run out which is usually by lunchtime - this says it all.!

Although we'd initially stopped to get cash from the ATM, my husband was seduced by the wonderful smell of baking emanating from the shop! We ended up with a Cinnamon & Raisin loaf and a granary loaf - YUMMY!

Absolutely fantastic. Great food, great atmosphere. Probably the best fine dining restaurant near Exeter. You really have to try it.

Lovely food with lots of variety on offer. Lovely service, felt like a friend of the pub on only my second visit, and just a lovely atmosphere. Spent £20 p/p on a main and a drink, and was worth every penny. Feel good to be supporting such an establishment
