Arlene's Coffee Shop in Argyll & Bute

The cafe is in a great spot for people coming off or going on the ferry. we called in a couple of times. coffees good, food fine but they seemed a little distracted!

Tasteless cheese and onion sandwich. Dry and not very nice. @£7.25 a pure rip off. Felt sorry for any holiday makers having to pay these extortionate prices.

We stopped here for a lovely lunch looking over the loch. We were initially reluctant due to some previous negative reviews - but it seems there has been a staffing change since then and we were welcomed by very friendly staff. The food was absolutely delicious - excellent range of toasties/panini's etc. My nephew had the salted caramel hot chocolate and describe it as epic!! We would highly recommend!

Repeat visit to this cafe. I love their coffee and cakes. I wonder if it has changed hands? Service was smiley and cheerful. The interior has changed, not so many tables inside and the chocolate on display was missing.They still have delicious coffee and cake. Brilliant. Tip they also make lovely breakfast rolls if you’re going far.

We stopped here to grab coffee and a breakfast roll before getting on the ferry to Oban. Both were excellent and good value for money. The cakes looked delish as well and we saw several people grabbing full breakfast which also looked very good. It's just a few mins walk from the ferry.

What an absolute positive change since last time. Service with a smile. Change in ownership maybe? Polite, quick and efficient staff and service! If it stays that way I’ll definitely be back!! In Craignure village by the sea, A coffee shop blooms, warm and free. Two kind souls, Michaela and Conner, Serve smiles and food, the perfect honor. Their presence, a joy, a morning delight, A stark contrast to Arlene's blight. Arlene, who ruled with a bitter tone, Rude and abrupt, she chilled to the bone. But Michaela and Conner brought a change, Their beauty, politeness, a welcome range. Friendly faces and food so divine,They turned the shop into a shrine. Thank you 🙏

We stop here every time we visit Mull and the food is always great. Every previous visit we have always received a very warm and cheery welcome too. This time the young lady serving was obviously disengaged and service was slow despite there being no queue etc. I'm sure she had her reasons but it wasn't the Arlene's service we have been used to. The food was of course great.

Stopped to pick up a takeaway sandwich to be met by the unhelpful, unwelcoming and unfriendly young woman serving. I clearly have a disability, and she kept us waiting at the counter, not doing anything, popping outside twice before eventually serving us, again not a smile on her face….that said, the sandwich was amazing! And the chef passed it through with a beaming smile on his face when we thanked him. Also noticed a very strange sign on a table saying reserved for larger group?? What’s that about lol….? Would the staff refused entry to a group of 3/4 as it could seat 6??? Common sense required surely…. Reviews on here seem very mixed, maybe staff rota needs looking at to identify a pattern….🤔

What is it with the poor service in these tourist destinations? Do you hate people generally or are just sick and tired of your dead end job? I’m so glad we couldn’t order what we wanted and left (because toasted sandwiches can only be made at 11:45 and we were there at 11:30), once I witnessed how you treated the lovely lady tourist before me. To bark at her to find out where she was sitting and telling her to sit, to then yell her order out so she had to get up again and walk the two steps to collect her food, as soon as she had sat down, was deplorable. You weren’t busy but you couldn’t care less. Despicable behaviour.

The female barista shouted at a child that tried to get a fork to eat their food..."I will decide if you get a fork". We waited without acknowledgement and when we eventually got our takeaway coffees they were burnt and undrinkable. Arlene needs to get better trained and motivated staff or there will be no return business. Which would be a pity.

Lovely food, a bit overpriced for what it is. Miserable miserable service. I felt our family was out of place. Go to the next cafe up for what seems like a more welcoming place.

Brilliant, tasty lunch for our hungry, fussy family. Had local pork burger, couple of cheese and ham toasties and fish cake special. All great quality and well cooked and presented. Finished off with some fantastic cakes. Service was friendly and helpful in ensuring kids were comfortable with their food (hating salad garnish!). Ace place. We will be back!

Stopped off for brunch and had a roll complete with sausage bacon haggis and a soft fried egg.. My eyes were bigger than my belly but I endeavoured yo eat it all. Very tasty, quick service and friendly. Only a small place but functional. I will surely return

We had wonderful toasties for lunch at Arlene’s cafe after arriving off the ferry from Oban. Sat outside in the sunshine and also split a delicious homemade cake. Arlene has a great thing going here. Highly recommended.

Great little cafe, wonderful setting right near the ferry and bus stop at Craignure. The lady was helpful and friendly. Coffee was good and cakes were amazing so we had some to take away as so much choice.

Good choice of food, brilliant location - directly opposite ferry. Enjoyed food before driving across Mull to catch ferry to Iona. Great start to holiday as hadn't had time to buy food before catching ferry at Oban and no food available on ferry. Purchased 2 drinks - one for later in the day - staff member suggested the 2nd drink kept cold in fridge until I'd eaten my meal, very helpful. Thank you.

Quick service with excellent food. Although the ferry had just come in service was fast and good. I had a goat’s cheese wrap with chili jam which was very tasty.

Arlene's sandwiches are amazing. Everyone in our group agreed they were the best they had tasted, ever. They were lovingly prepred and ready for us to pick up when we arrived from the ferry. You can also sit in, and her cakes also look incredible.

Lovely small cafe right on the pier of Craignure. We ordered two bacon sandwiches and coffee, all of which was really tasty! Definitely recommend.

We had two fantastic lattes and two gorgeous bits of cake here recently, while we waited for the ferry. The cakes (millionaires shortbread and raspberry/almond cake) were delicious. Arlene was working on her own, providing everything from sausage and egg baps to order, through to takeaway coffees and cake. We sat outside in the sunshine as a steady procession of hungry punters arrived. They won't have been disappointed. Hopefully, somebody will be attracted to work here soon - it's a great addition to the services available at the waterfront.

Dropped in yesterday while waiting on ferry. Very busy but great service for take away coffee and cakes. At least 5 options for gluten free cakes plus lots of other tray bakes and cakes priced very reasonably and tasted lovely. Would definitely recommend.

There could be a sitcom about this place. Staff so rude. The ‘Black Books’ of cafe’s. And I’ve tried it three times over the years.

Food and drinks good but spoilt by a very hostile unwelcoming atmosphere generated by the cafe staff. Every customer was treated poorly and one lady who had moved to another table to avoid the opening door and draft was asked “how many tables do you need” by the waitress who then threw her arms into the air in exasperation. The customer was a foreign lady and we were embarrassed that she had such treatment on visiting the UK. Others were asked to leave their bags outside despite heavy rain. It was very unkind and hard to observe. This is obviously normal behaviour daily , based on many previous reviews. Disappointing. Estelle

Simply Scrumptious Amazing food, fantastic selection of Gluten Free and Dairy Free cakes. Everything is homemade!! Gluten free bread available and oat milk too. Various flavoured hot chocolate drinks. Generous portions and lots to choose from. Cafe also has selection of specialty chocolate, in various shapes eg cats, tool kits etc. Lovely people, who are very friendly. Highly recommend 😁

Food was fine. Vegan friendly options could have been better since so much simpler than other options. One lady was very accommodating. However another one of the ladies serving had a rant at an old lady waiting for her takeaway food and gave her a telling off since she didn’t wait in the correct waiting area. That was not ok!! Didn’t appreciate that at all especially when people are not local nor speak English as their first language. If you have a business like this, and are bound to tourist business, being friendly with customers should be at the top of the menu! ;-)

I would like to say that this coffee shop has such an incredible selection of vegan cakes and drinks and I want you all to know we travel from Oban to Mull specifically to get them! The staff were so rude to my mum and I that we both left immediately. We cannot comment on the coffee as we decided not to give this place our custom. I have never been so put out that it causes me to leave, but I made an exception on this occasion as they were so rude. There are so many lovely establishments on Mull with charming staff - I would recommend taking your business somewhere that the customer will not be considered an inconvenience.We will not be back.

Having been stuck in Crainure as the bus times didn't coincide with the ferry, we were eager to get a coffee at 10.30 when the shop opened. Opening times were quite relaxed as we waited until going on 11am... Arlene seemed quite annoyed when I ordered 4 coffees... I almost apologised and then remembered it was a coffe shop.

I am in complete agreement with the comments below. The woman at the counter obviously didn’t have it in her to smile or greet. I’m guessing she can get away with having atrocious customer service skills because of the location of the shop near the harbour which guarantees business. I left my wife and 12y old daughter to collect some food that we ordered. My wife had asked for a bag to put the food in. She was clearly unhappy about it. As she turned away, my daughter heard her swearing using the F word! It was only later when we were in the ferry that my daughter told me about this. Had I known earlier I would’ve gone back to give her a piece of my mind. Shocking! And in front of a child!!

I'm definately aware that customers can be incredibly rude but it seems from scrolling down the reviews, it is always the customers fault rather than the common denominator being the poor service. We were spoke to appallingly when we were nothing but polite. Genuinely felt guilty for giving the business my custom. We had a very average coffee but the bakes and the chocolate looked lovely. Its clear Arlene and her daughter have a real talent for baking. Customer service, apologising and accepting feedback is however clearly not a strong point. It's a little sad really that a job can make you so readily angry and ultimately unhappy.I noticed a local who had visited prior to us was treated very differently so I'm glad the business will still do well with regulars that dont seem to cause such offence with their presence. Unfortunately the bad reviews will persist if attitudes dont change. I very rarely write negative reviews but was compelled to when I saw the responses to other people who had similar experiences.

Very upset at the way we were treated by what can only say was aggressive and very rude woman. I went over to Mull for the day to cycle and went to the cafe for breakfast. The way I was spoken to was atrocious. Covid-19 is no excuse for rude aggressive staff to treat visitors. I am from Argyll and the west coast of Scotland and this place is not representative of the people we are. I won’t be returning.

Been on Mull all through covid and Arlene’s has been open the whole time. Take away meals and coffee have been a life saver on many a tough day. I’ve never known cheeky or off hand service. Maybe the service that you get reflects the attitude you give. Why not practice a little kindness in these strange times. Thanks for all you have done.

First full day on the island stopped of for some lunch. Fish finger ciabata and phillycheese steak ciabata both with chips. Both were excellent with nice side salad and the chips were brilliant. Can highly recommend.

My husband and i were on Mull for a week and we visited Arlene's twice. The ham sandwich with home made coleslaw are amazing as are the home made sausage rolls. I was suprised to read review about discourteous staff,both times i visited the lady who served me was friendly and asked about our visit. I would definately recommend a visit.

The food is nice. We have been there many many times in the past and have never been served as rudely as we were this time. I don’t think I’ve ever been served this bad by anywhere. It was terrible. No eye contact, never a smile, very blunt and harsh toned. It seemed as if it was a huge burden to be speaking to and serving us. Very disappointed. Wish we had not spent our money there. Won’t be returning again.

I visited Arlene’s yesterday as hadn’t been in ages and since lockdown ended I was keen to get some of Ishbel’s cakes. I was really impressed with their set up and everyone in the queue was adhering to their clear procedures detailed on the building. Ordered coffee, toastie and some delicious parsnip cake - all fantastic. A joy to be back visiting again.

Poor customer service experience here today. The cake was quite nice and the coffee okay but the service left a lot to be desired. The assistant's expression throughout was surly and, while she responded to my requests, it was with virtually no verbal engagement, just a bored, unfriendly expression and occasional sigh, as if everything was quite an effort and slightly resented. I was going to say something about this impression but held back because my 14-year old son was with me. I noticed the assistant had put her fingers on at least one, I think two, of our cakes, so I asked her if you could assure me she was applying the strictest hygiene (because of the Covid crisis). I'm fairly sure I detected a roll of the eyes. I tried to engage positively thereafter, asking cheerily how the week had been so far; the answer 'All right'. End of conversation. I left with a friendly 'See you', but heard nothing in response. I walked away feeling a bit resentful that I had spent as much as I had and feeling certain that I would not be back. My 14 year old son made a comment which confirmed that his impression was the same as mine. Disappointing considering the prime position as the first or last call for many on Mull. Potentially a bad first or last impression of what is in fact a wonderful island and holiday destination.

Had a coffee while waiting for the ferry. Coffee shop is very small, but has a nice selection of cakes and chocolates, as well as ice cream and they do sandwiches as well. Toilet was very clean. Only inconvenience was that there’s a minimum £5 for card payment. Would recommend.

Visited this cafe for a much needed break off work. Cake was delicious however the customer service wasn’t very friendly, no smile or hello.

The view is excellent and it is just a short walk from the pier. The food and coffee is good but the staff could do with some PD in how best to respond to customers.

Have eaten here several times and have always found the staff to be really nice.The food is excellent, the best you will find in any cafe on Mull and the prices are very reasonable.Some reviews/people will moan about anything and maybe it is them who have to leave their 'bad attitudes' on the door step before entering this lovely little cafe.Keep up the good work girls.

Lovely spot we could sit outside with our dog and admire the gorgeous views. Sadly the service isn’t with a smile despite me trying to be extra nice to over compensate for the misery in front of me. Appreciate we all have off days etc but this place let the team of Mull down today as the tourist place was really friendly as was everyone else we encountered. On the plus side reasonably priced and great location just don’t go in chirpy as you will be met with no response.

Arlene's is located on the other side of the road, just as you get off the Ferry. It is quite a small coffee shop, so don't assume you'll find a place to sit and it can get busy. Sometimes there are 'Reserved' signs on the table for regular customers. There are, however, tables outside if the weather is favourable, but, being Mull, the weather is never guaranteed to be good !There is quite a decent selection of food and, considering Mull is a trapped market and generally quite expensive, the prices are not too bad considering. The food quality is fine, nothing to worry about, unless you are quite fussy.I know many reviews have stated about the rude owners, but have not really experienced this in our several times over the years we have visited the shop.I think sometimes the shop can get very busy at certain times of the day and, because of its small size to customer ratio, nerves can get a little frayed ! That's not saying the owners are perfect in customer relations, just giving it a sense of perspective.

Why advertise breakfast when you don't open till 10.30. With a captive clientele at the ferry terminal this cafe does not meet the needs of potential customers at either end of the day. Having the door slammed in my face has prompted this response

We only wanted a coffee on our way to the eagles. As far as coffee and tea are concerned can't really go wrong but in the words of my teenager 'that lady is the rudest lady I've ever met.' It did stop us making a return visit when we were at the ferry. I'm sure the cafe gets enough local business and with very little competition there's no need for Arlene to change her approach.

3 of us visited this coffee shop today after getting off the Calmac ferry at 3pm. We walked in, saw a table at the front door with a reserved ticket and only 1 table with 3 seats was free. Suddenly we heard a rude, abrupt bark from the assistant behind the counter saying 'we are closed actually!' So we turned round & got the 3:20pm ferry back to Costa at Oban. How a coffee shop can close on a summer's afternoon at 3pm I have no idea! And how this business can afford to turn down trade in the summer season is beyond me. We will never be back and would never recommend this to anyone! Furthermore, the assistant needs to go on a customer service course and the management needs to wake up and be open for business beyond 3pm! Rating 0/10...avoid!

Like many visitors to Craignure I suspect, we had a little time to kill before boarding the ferry back to Oban on the mainland so decided to stretch the legs and see what was around.

Twice last week while holidaying nearby we called planning for a drink and snack first time (mid week) and an early lunch before catching the ferry last Saturday second time.

The lady serving was rude and impatient with the elderly gentleman in front of us, and was equally rude to us, so we left without ordering. You would be better off getting a coffee and a sandwich from the Spar next door and sitting on the sea front.

I stopped here on two different days, once for a latte and the other for a burger (the tex mex bean burger was delicious!). There isn't a ton of room but that really didn't bother me much. I assume the reserved tables are for locals who wish to use them which makes perfect sense to me. If the cafe just catered to tourists coming off the ferry (as other reviewers seem to think it should), it wouldn't have any business in the quieter months. I would recommend it as a lovely, affordable, and tasty place to stop!

I’m a little stunned by the poor reviews left here. The food is amazing and the cakes...wow definitely recommend the salted caramel chocolate cake! I have been in a few times and can be busy when people are waiting for a ferry but worth the wait. Arlene’s isn’t a large cafe so space is limited so best to leave your backpacks/bags outside, there are seats outside perfect for a lovely day! Always had great friendly service when I visited but then again I’m always polite, not self-centred nor difficult. I think it’s a shame people only post bad reviews and not the good hence this post. I think hospitality trade is the hardest, you can never please everyone. Keep up the good work ladies!

Was quite astounded at the rudeness of the woman serving in this cafe.Upon entering there was no eye contact or anything resembling a welcome.There were 3 free tables, 2 said reserved, and the one that was available was squeezed in a corner, meaning we would have had to disturb other customers to get to it.I asked if we could possibly sit at a reserved table- "1/2hour at most" came an abrupt reply.At that point we decided that this rude person did not deserve our custom and walked out.Such a shame as the cakes looked amazing ,and the cafe claims to be award winning.My advice to the owner would be that you seriously need to change your serving staff.An awful impression of Mull if you've just disembarked from the ferry

Along a similar tact to the rest of the reviews about the manner of the lady serving cakes today. I personally quite like feeling like I need to apologise for entering the establishment and spending some money. Very edgy. Makes a change from all the other charming folk of Mull. We will be back!

Pretty unwelcoming from the indifferent woman on duty. Devoid of any reasonable level of customer service.

Four of us had a light lunch and coffee. The food was all home made and really good, and the service was polite and helpful. It is busy, particularly when a ferry is coming in or going out. It's small. It's not a waiting room for the ferry. Ignore some of the whingers on Trip Advisor, who complain about the service.

We last went to Arlene's in October (see my earlier review), and visited again this April. Once again we had lovely coffee and cakes, as well as some of her chocolates to takeaway. But what really made the visit memorable was we got on so well with her, and got a smile!!! She's now getting into vegan/dairy free cakes, which we've been trying to perfect, so had a great bakers chat. Reason number 4 to visit Mull (after the eagles, otters and deer). We were even allowed to use one of the tables marked reserved, which are obviously kept back for "nice" customers!

After reading such excellent reviews we were looking forward to calling in here, unfortunately even though the sign states Open all Year it was closed !

Compact but welcoming. Ideally located opposite Craignure Ferry Terminal so an ideal place to wait. Good selection of cakes which include some gluten - free. Well done as many other much larger cafes do not cater for gluten - free.

Just looked at Arlene’s other reviews, and they are all right in their own way! Yes, the cakes are delicious as so many people say, and there’s always the uncertainty of which side of bed Arlene got out of this morning. We had a little problem over our loyalty card, which we’d kept from our last trip to Mull , but survived to enjoy the cakes and coffee. Looking forward to seeing you again, Arlene, and enjoying your excellent baking, a smile would really round the visit off!

We visit mull often through out the year and can't pass this great place to eat cakes and food and coffee. all great staff can't do enough for us. Just love it. The proof is in the pudding always people queing to be served. A little corner of heaven on a great island. Keith
