I’m disappointed. Whilst the food was lovely, the service was shocking to say the least. The gentleman’ with the grey hair was plain rude. When entering an establishment and making my order I expect at least some type of warmth, conversation or general manners. We sat down and within seconds this gentleman arrived at our table asking for our order. We weren’t ready and this appeared to annoy him and he quite literally stormed away . He presented as abrupt, and quite honestly ruined our first visit. It’s basic manners. Nothing special. A ‘hello’ or any other type of engagement is all that’s required. We won’t be back. I really dislike leaving bad reviews but on this occasion I feel I must, as our experience was completely ruined by someone who lacked any warmth or human kindness.

Popped in here for a snack. Ended up ordering cheese scones and millionaires shortbread, hot chocolate, tea and coffee and a breakfast bagel… the lovely staff kindly said we could have a takeaway box if we didn’t finish everything but there was no need as we scoffed it all!!

A new spot for breakfast. We had missed breakfast at our hotel as we slept until 10 am. They suggested Apples for Jam. We arrived , sat down and ordered. I had a BLT in a bagel and we both had a coffee. It hit the spot! Polite staff and a sunny morning. A great, albeit late, start to the day

Had been here before so it was our 1st choice for lunch while we were in Melrose. Called in about 12 and there were no seats, which is understandable because of their popularity. So,returned an hour later when there were seats and asked for a table for two please, only to be told quite curtly that they weren't serving as they needed to catch up washing dishes. It was still over lunchtime ! So unable to comment on the food but the service and attitude was terrible.

We popped in for brunch after spotting it walking down the street on a day out in Melrose. The food was good quality and service polite and friendly. The toilet situation is far from ideal as it is necessary to walk through the side of the kitchen to go there. I was a bit grossed out to realise that to throw a hand towel away you need to open the bin with your (now clean) hands, there is a sign on the wall also asking people to put used sanitary products in there. It is tiny but better use could be made of the space and honestly, the toilet alone would put me off returning which is a shame.

I’m a regular visitor to this cafe as I live locally. Unfortunately, the service has really gone downhill since Turiya (the previous manageress) left. Also, in many menu items using avocado, the avocado is now substituted by runny guacamole from a jar and the coffee has a strange bitter taste. Still a nice place but not nearly as good as it was.

This is my second bad experience visiting Apples For Jam. I come here very often and Turiya, the previous manager was fabulous (she has now left). After visiting this afternoon with my sister, I was left really disappointed with the customer service. Three girls were behind the desk chatting when we walked in and when asking what gluten free options they had, we were told they didn’t have any. They usually do have a couple of options of GF cake so I was very surprised. When we said we would leave it for now, just as we walked out the door we heard a very sarcastic ‘byeeeeeeee’ followed by giggles. It was really rude and not acceptable.

We had lunch here after visiting Melrose and Jedburgh Abbey’s. You can either sit down in the small restaurant or order takeaway. The restaurant is small with limited seating and a couple tables outside. We ordered the BLT on a Bagel. Much different from the states. The bagel was very thin, whereas we have thicker ones. It was fine, but not special.

To be quite blunt the 3 of them came across extremely rude and when I went up to order they all just stared with a blank face?? I was appalled and shocked.. Asked for a cortado , came down with a flat white and instead of making a new one she just dumped half of it and gave it back? Extremely bad service and too be honest wouldn’t let those 3 people near the place again. Ridiculous behaviour.

I live locally and am in this cafe most days. It’s quite small so you can’t always get a table straight away but if you wait a few mins one usually comes up or you can ask for food/coffee to take away. I visited Melrose again in October with The Blond and once again we were delighted with our daily ration of coffee, scones and other delights at AfJ. Despite the restrictions then imposed, Johnnie and his smashing team (Amy, Imogen, Will et al) ran this little but classy cafe with passion and efficiency, keeping us all safe.Space is at a premium in AfJ at the best of times, so it was a challenge to maintain a reasonable and safe layout but this was achieved brilliantly by the team. Sometimes it was necessary to wait outside for a table, but the resulting delights and friendly welcome were worth the wait. In my last review (January 2020) I raved about the scones - I’m happy to report that they are as splendid as ever. Another treat was the pasteis de nata (Portuguese custard tarts) executed to an impressive standard.Johnnie’s second AfJ at Earlston had not quite opened at the time of our stay in October but we look forward to visiting it on our next trip to Melrose. In summary, I can recommend AfJ in Melrose for its outstanding coffee, delicious sweet treats and novel lunch dishes. You will be welcomed and well looked after by a charming and helpful team.

As I work near this lovely cafe, I often have the pleasure of taking time out to enjoy a bowl of homemade soup fresh from the kitchen of Apples for Jam. It's the kind of soup your Scottish gran would make ( if you are lucky enough to have one! ) If you don't ( like me - an American residing in the Borders ) it ticks all the boxes : heart warming, freshly made, natural ingredients, beautifully seasoned, with lovely slices of toast to go with it. What more could you ask for ? If you are visiting Melrose, this dear cafe is welcoming, small and stylish, and everything is made and served with tender loving care. Fabulous coffee. Melrose is a lovely place to visit and there’s plenty choice when it comes to good-eats. But something about the smart simple look of this place and the “name” intrigued me - as it also happens to be the title of one of my favourite cookbooks. It’s a bit of a squeeze inside made more so by restrictions but worth any wait or seeming lack of room and the owner has made clever use of every nook and cranny and also added some pavement tables and chairs. It’s a popular cafe and we were lucky to arrive just as some tables had cleared. After a quick sanitise we were seated and served quickly. The menu offers enough variety to satisfy a cafe-cultured palate and it’s prepared fresh and well. My home made soup and toasted sourdough was delicious. A salted beef mustard and pickle bagel well satisfied my other half. The assortment of baked goodies looked too tempting not to try and so we settled on a pear frangipani tart and chocolate brownie - both fab! Especially the former! This is the kind of place you want to come back to. Reliably tasty with a touch of Melrose class. Thoroughly recommend it to those who’ll like easy good food in lovely surroundings. Wishing them all the best over the coming months - hope footfall continues to flourish

Once in a blue moon, or even less frequently, I come across a truly outstanding cafe. Apples for Jam in Melrose is that rare find.Run by Johnnie and team, AfJ (sorry Johnnie) although tiny with only room for about 20 at a squeeze, delights in every way. A warm welcome, speedy service, hot delicious coffee and a very wide choice of fare will delight even the most demanding patron.I recently spent a quiet and relaxing week in a converted cowshed outside Melrose and paid a daily pilgrimage to AfJ. While the Blond fell in love with the sourdough toast in various configurations, I shamelessly indulged in a daily ration of two large scones, accompanied by generous helpings of butter and jam. The clientele of AfJ was a mix of locals and visitors and all seemed more than content with the fine AfJ fare. They were equally happy to share tables, essential sometimes in this fine but tiny cafe.I am delighted to recommend Apples for Jam, without any hesitation.

I had the salmon, avo and creme fresh salad- was delicious but way too much 'padding ' with lettuce, could have dinne with more of the tasty ingredients. All in all though a great place that I'll be back to.

This is a small cafe on Melrose High Street with a couple of tables outside. Service was friendly and the food from the relatively short menu was very nice. We took out two cheese scones which were fresh but only seemed to have cheese on the top and none inside. This is a trend now and my mother, whose cheese scones were full of cheese, would not approve! We would be happy to return.

Really like this place, although wish there were vegan options ON the menu so didn't have to faff! Really lovely bread, usually, & lovely drinks. It's a tiny place so sometimes you have to wait a wee while - but I've never had to wait ages, even when it's busy with tourists & locals alike. Very stylish place, too, and has some nice local products for sale. Friendly even when a bit hassled! The coffee is superb (my coffee-loving partner says), and the oat milk hot choc has always been absolutely lovely, too. The owner clearly takes pride and care in all he does.

Visited for tea / coffee and cake but not impressed by the length of time it took for our order to be delivered after order placed. How long does it take to make tea!! Place very cramped and too many tables in what is a very small place. Would not return.

Following a recommendation from a customer siting outside Apples for Jam we decided to have lunch here and we were not disappointed. Lovely goats cheese and emental toasted sandwich. Came with salad which was fresh and tasty. Staff friendly and service efficient, will definitely be back.

Looked very nice place, quite small. The time I went there was no room inside so sat outside....very restricted room as only two tables on narrow pavement.

Popped in for takeout - oat latte, hot chocolate and cheese scone (£6.40 - takeout cheaper than eating in). The guy was so busy but he was friendly and efficient. He apologised for no food being available as he'd been exceptionally busy that day (this was around 4pm). This is a small but lovely eaterie, I only wish I'd got there earlier so I could have enjoyed a light bite. Simple but chic decor. Background music was just right. Couple of chairs / tables on the pavement. Takes cash and card. Honey (Heather and blossom) and sauces available to buy.

Popped in for a quick lunch. Enjoyed the atmosphere, we were lucky to pick a quiet few mins & grabbed a table. It seems very popular with locals. Always a good sign. Enjoyed our lunch & even purchased some Scottish Heather 🍯

We were staying in a cottage in Melrose recently and on our last day (wish we'd been in before now!) we ventured in for a drink and a bite to eat. We (husband, 15 year old son and I) are all keen on scones (if they're good) and the ones in this café are some of the best we've had in a long time. My son and I had huge cherry scones whilst my husband opted for a fruit scone which he told me was excellent. I wish I'd taken a photo of them but they looked so fantastic we got stuck in immediately! Although we didn't have lunch the menu looked like the sort of thing we generally opt for and when we're back in Melrose we'll definitely call in again - this time for lunch. The staff were lovely and we sat near an elderly local gentleman who was very sweet and talked to everyone who came in.

We popped in to Apples for Jam just before heading off to the Abbey, to check what time they closed,It looked really appetising. We just managed to get back at 4,30 and were welcomed in with our boxer dog. lovely.. My husband and i shared a delicious slice of lemon pollenta cake and a chocolate caramel brownie. Absolute heaven ! Everything is freshly made each day, and the menu is very varied . My friend , who is dairy free, enjoyed a yummy coconut and cherry slice, and her husband had a gorgeous cheese scone..Highly recommended. Go !

Reasonable food which is just as well as the service was really slow. Only one person taking a tables order then putting the order through to the kitchen before doing the same for the next table, then the next one. Not what you would expect.

Came here with 6 family and friends. All of us had a fabulous main and starter. The food was roasting hot and absolutely delicious and the staff were very friendly. Would absolutely recommend!

Stopped in for some lunch today. Friendly service with a good and varied choice of menu. Offers half portions of meals if more suitable. Brilliant value. Hot and cold options available. Felt like the teapot was bottomless, think it was 3 cupfuls in total!

A weekend away in the Scottish Borders led to us unexpectedly finding this wonderful restaurant in the Yarrow Valley today. It was one of the best Sunday roasts we’ve had in years (delicious local beef and pork) and a seriously tempting menu focussed around local ingredients by Bryn Jones. The honey cake for dessert by @she.likesbaking was also incredible and I’ve only just realised that Oxana Jones is not only a wonderful front-of-house host, but also an extremely talented baker. Thank you to your team, it was a memorable lunch and we’ll definitely be back for one of your tasting menus and an overnight stay.

Great little spot with friendly staff and good home cooked food. Opted for the bigger breakfast and was impressed with the quality of the ingredients. Great vibe in the seating area and very handy as close to town centre. Decent value for money and set us up for the day.
