Excellent position and a lovely building. Very pleasant restaurant with plenty of room between the tables. Service was attentive and we didn't have to wait long between courses. We both chose the steak frites which was fine but not the best in my experience, hence the dropping of one star. We would however visit again if we were in the area.

This place seems to have really gone downhill. We visited at lunchtime. The barman was sarcastic and quite rude. As a precursor to placing our order, we were told we would only be allowed to order food if we told him where we were sitting! What a strange way to interact with customers. We sat in the courtyard out the back, but wish we hadn't. It basically resembles a dirty and unkempt back yard. The only free table was right under the open window of the gents toilets. The table was covered in wet tissues and cigarette buts were on the ground. A leaking gutter dripped water on to the table and in to our meals. When our meals were brought out to us, we had to go and find the cutlery and condiments ourselves. Dirty and depressing experience really.

Pleasant service, reasonable prices, the food is nothing special. After a full day travelling to Wells, The Crown, or Anton’s Bistro (not sure what the difference is) fed us adequately and provided us with a bottle of decent wine all for less than £90, which, these days is all you can ask for.

We wanted a light Sunday lunch, and The Swan, which we usually patronise when visiting Wells, didn’t serve food on Sundays. We went down the road to The Crown – excellent food and great service, although a bit on the pricey side. We enjoyed our meal, and will definitely consider returning.

1st, I don't like ratatouille, I asked not to have it on my plate, not reviewing that, The staff were 1st class, warm and welcoming, pretty attentive, the 1st meal we had here was exceptional, a Saturday, so good we asked if there was space following day, they squeezed us in early for Sunday Lunch, best beef ever to cross my lips (this is a man that eats a lot of Aberdeen Angus), We had tasted enough to know, we ate here on the last 2 days of our stay both eat out to help out nights, no drop in quality, not rushed and not a single bad or average meal, Both Me and My Wife want to return and stay in the Hotel here, this is where we discovered Westhay beef and the Genuine West country welcome that we found elsewhere on our staycation

Our first day in Wells, we booked here for dinner, and their Sunday roast as well, not knowing what to expect as we just needed a piece of mind of a place to eat on our first two days. On our first meal there, my husband ordered the steak and I had the burger. Beautiful food and my husband loved his order. Mine was great as well. The next day, we had the Sunday roast and it was again, delicious. During our Sunday roast, we booked another 2 nights dinner with them. I did try the steak and I understood why my husband had it all three times- the meat was cooked perfectly (med-rare, just the way we liked it) although we both opted out the ratatouille which seems to be part of the side on almost every "main". At the end, my husband and I agreed that we will be back in Wells (love the location at well) and we will be booking into one of their rooms upstairs).

We arrived into the restaurant a little after 12 this bank holiday Monday. Understandably, the restaurant looked very busy. We waited at the entrance for some guidance on how to be seated and how service would work in the current COVID situation. 5 minutes later, after countless staff walking passed us and ignoring our asks for help on being seated, we proceeded through to investigate for ourselves. When we asked the third member of staff for help, we were told to find a table ourselves. After walking around (bare in mind there is no social distancing being practised at all) we found no tables. Being that it is a bank holiday, this is understandable. However, a better system should be in place so that guests aren’t just aimlessly wondering around looking. Shocking.

Booked in advance for family meal in Wells because two said they wanted the Salmon dish from the online menu. We arrived, seated and ordered. Ten mins later were told that Salmon had run out. Choose again Only Butcombe ale available sadly. Food took too long to arrive. Food was okay but overpriced although the ham in my ham egg and chips was soggy and presliced. - not carved. Disappointingly ignored by most of the staff from start to finish. Sorry but we made an effort to get your business up and running after COVID 19. You have let yourselves down. There are better meals and service to be had in Wells.

A Very Good Second Visit to Anton’s Café Bar We were back to Somerset in September, and after exploring the Wells Cathedral, retired to The Crown at Wells, and Anton’s, for beverages. Now, The Crown at Wells is a small hotel, and Anton’s is the restaurant and pub, and quaint in all respects. It’s well-situated right in the heart of Wells, and convenient for so many, exploring the area. One thing that I had not picked up on previously, was that the restaurant is officially “Anton’s Café Bar,” situated in The Crown at Wells. I rather thought that they were one, and the same. We sat at a largish table, right at the windows, and relaxed from a long morning of walking. It was nice being at the windows, as we could watch all the visitors to Wells walk past, and could enjoy the afternoon Autumn sunshine. It was time for wine for two of us, and for the other, a non-alcoholic beer. I had learned the drill of which bar to go to, when seated in the dining room area, so had that part down, and I admit that the service was much more friendly. First time, I made the mistake of going to the wrong bar (though they are attached), and I think that the staff took me to be a “regular” now? Anyway, service was cheerful this time, and I had a couple of glasses of Chablis, and the non-alcoholic brew (did not catch the name), for my table. The Crown at Wells and Anton’s are interesting, and charming, with odd artifacts, and collections on the walls, such as a display of clay smoking pipes, near the bar. One can absorb history, just sitting within these walls, and pick up on a lot of that charm, as well. I plan on dining there next visit, but for now, only drinks, in a lovely little café and pub.

We stayed at the Crown Hotel for 3 nights and visited Antons Bistrot for dinner on our second night. Having already had a browse at the menu, we went through to the bistrot and ordered. Our meals arrived hot and in a timely fashion. We enjoyed our meals despite noticing some inconsistencies! My husband ordered Moules which on the menu came with fries, however it was served with brown baguette style bread. My husband did not complain as said he much preferred the bread anyway. My pie and garlic mash was lovely, however was priced on our bill as £3.50 more than the menu! Again only a small criticism with regards to consistency. Could not fault the friendliness and service of the staff and overall our dinner was nice, hot and served on time. Our table was set up for us in the wine shop which was a very pleasant, different and quirky experience for us.

Meeting friends in Wells, we made the decision to eat at this restaurant. Although they were reasonably busy, we managed to find a table for the four us us.Their menu included a two-course meal with a beer or wine for £15 per person. All four of us chose from this menu, even though we could have ordered something from a different menu. We each chose a starter with the main meal, and all four of us enjoyed our starters. All four chose something different. Two of us chose the sausages as our main meal, and were pleased with the result. The other two enjoyed their choice of their mains. As we had not seen each other for a while, we just chatted and chatted. Not once did the friendly staff look daggers at us, wishing that we would hurry and leave. The staff did enquire as to whether we were enjoying our meals, but that was about all. This is normal, though. They certainly did not keep hassling us by asking if we wanted more drinks, etc.

We came on a wet Monday lunchtime and were disappointed to be seated in the bistro as it looked a lot less inviting than the pub. There was a very lukewarm welcome from an older waiter and then a young waiter took over and took a long time taking our order and getting our drinks even though there was only one other table occupied in the bistro. The food was very tasty and freshly prepared and included ploughman’s, fish and chips, chicken escalope burger, skin on fries and mac and cheese. What ruined it for me was that the young waiter clearly hadn’t had any proper training and was clearly out of his depth. He spilt a portion of chips beside me on the ground, giving me a fright, but just went away and got a pan and brush without apologising. I asked for more chips and they were brought by another member of staff. Then when he was clearing away he managed to drop a knife which hit my friend’s arm on its way to the floor. Again no apology. He was reaching over people to collect dishes which made us feel quite nervous. There was no warmth or welcome in the service and we didn’t leave a tip (which is rare for us)This place could so easily be so much better with a few improvements. Firstly improve the welcome and service. Secondly improve the environment in the bistro as it currently not that nice a place to spend time in. It’s a shame because the food is very nice but they need to up their game.

Monday lunchtime, so fairly quiet in the bistrot, although plate-loads of food were being taken into the bar of the Crown at Wells, an establishment dating back more than 500 years. Two menus are offered at lunchtime, a 'special' with set prices for 2 or 3 courses, including a glass of wine or alternative drink, and an à la carte. Being four grumpy aged people, we asked if we could pick and choose from both menues as three of the party were having a large dinner later in the day and one of us would have no time to eat again before 9:30pm. Service was splendid and nothing appeared to be too much trouble. When the dishes arrived, all were superb from both a quality and quantity point of view. Even the side dishes of fries were cooked to perfection – crispy exterior and soft inside.

We, my best friend, her sister and I, had booked a table on Friday evening for 7.30. We arrived, stated we had booked and the scruffy long curly haired man at the reception merely pointed to a table at the back of the restaurant. The table was laid for 4 so obviously not really our table. The glass vase of flowers was filled with putrid green water and the poor flowers had given up and died. After a busy weekend working, eight of us needed a good meal to help wind down and relax. We didn’t get it! We arrived in two groups. As the second group arrived, a member of staff met them with the news that “sticky toffee pudding is off”! When we sat down, we were given menus with the advice that “we have no chips”. Ok - no sticky toffee pudding and no chips. I made my choice - roast pork (one of two traditional roasts offered). Nothing was said and the waiter carried on taking orders. All was fine until someone ordered roast beef. “That will be turkey as we have no other roasts”. Errrrr you’ve just taken an order for pork. No that won’t be pork it will be turkey as that’s all we have. So in reality no sticky toffee pudding, no chips, no roast pork and no roast beef! But after being asked if chips could be substituted with roast potatoes (instead of the suggested salad leaves) orders were taken. The starters arrived and were quite well assembled on the plates and everyone was happy with their choices. We should have left then!!! Main courses arrived and that’s when it all went rapidly downhill. The food was tasteless. I cannot remember being served with such awful food before. Have you ever had deep fried leftover roast potatoes served with a burger? In fact they were served with everything. We had baskets of deep fried leftover roast potatoes!!!!! It is a saga that goes on and on. On receipt of the bill, we asked for the manager. The general manager nor restaurant manager was on duty so the bar Sanger fronted up. All kudos to him for doing so. He was totally frank and said there were always complaints and what would we like to do in order to move things forward. I asked how much the bill was and couldn’t contain myself. My comment was “HOW MUCH - you are joking!” No he was serious but then asked how much we would be prepared to pay. Off the top of my head I said £50 to which he replied “Thats fine I’ll just get you an amended bill”!!!!!! It really defies belief. Please think twice before going here. They WILL take your booking and they WILL charge you.

I could not have been more disappointed with our evening meal, practically everyone of our 6 meals was embarrassing. Ordering a rare venison steak for it to come out grey and the same for the medium rare ones ordered. No one checked back on the table I had to ask a waitress to come over having returned my steak and waiting around ten minutes before she returned to ask what I would like to chef to do... (I had hoped he would have just refired another steak and cooked it properly...) I told them not to bother take it off the bill. The two that ordered medium rare had more medium well but ate at least half before leaving the rest. We had a sirloin steak ordered which arrived half plated before us asking where were the chips. I couldn’t believe what Antons were charging and completely incapable of delivering. As another customer was leaving they came over to our table and couldn’t have described the place better “offering a menu that the chef is incapable of achieving” after their disappointment also.

Apparently there was a weddin party due at 5pm. Why did they not phone us to warn about this change. Food was mediocre, salads served in deep bowls, mine contained pickled cucumber, I think the vinegar had been poured into the bowl smothering the leaves making it completely inedible. The duck was initially cold and then, after ‘warming up’, tough, the mixed grill more than indifferent (I suggest that the chef goes to the new Premier Inn where the mixed grill is very good and a little less expensive), and on telling the waitress of our experience we were asked to leave by the ‘Manager’. We weren't sure the ham hock burger worked but full marks for something new. We met two of Dad's cousins at Anton's Bistrot for lunch. As it was a non market weekday it was quiet. There is limited parking on site but I managed to get a space as my father can't walk far. We tried the macaroni cheese (personally I would have liked more sauce, ham egg and chips, burgers, spaghetti bol and mixed ploughmans. Everyone said their food was good and the portion size is huge. Good location for wandering around the town.

Came here for a drink twice whilst in Wells. Good atmosphere and vibe from the local clientele. Tried the real ale (Butcoombe) which was well kept Came back in the evening for pre -dinner drinks. A good Malbec and Sauvignon blanc served. Not cheap however. Two large glasses will cost you over £13.00

We were in the area camping for bank holiday weekend in August. We went to Wells for lunch and sought out this pub (part of the crown) as it was shown as a historic building. The hot fuzz movie was filed here and there is memorabilia around the pub.The staff are friendly and helpful. Nice warm place to beWe seemed to arrive at the same time as lots of others. The wait for food was 1 hour 20 mins. The kids were VERY hungry after a day out swimming. On top of this the food was VERY average. The bill with drinks came to £70 for 5 people. Steak was overcooked. Pasta was overcooked.Would I go there again. probably not really. I would try somewhere to eat, but worth a visit for a drink

My partner and I were in Wells for 1 night and as there was a function in the hotel we were staying at we decided to eat out. We both felt that some of our food was very good, almost excellent, but with both our main courses and desserts the maxim 'less is more' should be applied. Both our starters were good; my Beef Carpaccio was delicious and beautifully presented and my partner's Gazpacho was tasty (although certainly a twist on a classic!)Then I had the squid dish for my main and this is where it got 'confused' as there was just too much going on. The squid was beautifully tender and very tasty and the spicy new potatoes were exactly that, but then there were pickled vegetables which worked well with the Beef starter but really added nothing to this dish.It was a similar story with both our desserts. The Gin & Tonic Cheesecake with the sorbet and juniper berries was lovely and worked well. There was no need for the chocolate dirt and sugar work. The Strawberry jelly with Chantilly cream and strawberry coulis was again overpowered by the addition of chocolate dirt and sugar work. (It was a sugar cage on the menu but that wasn't what was on the plates)The waiting staff were very polite but in need of some training.Overall it was ok but could be really good.

Our visit for Sunday lunch was thoroughly enjoyable. Although they had somehow managed to lose the booking we had made by phone the night before, they quickly redeemed themselves by their welcoming and courteous attentions and found a table for the 7 of us. We were not an easy crowd, including 2 vegans and 1 vegetarian and long and complex discussions were required to satisfy our varying needs. Our charming waitress could not have been more helpful and good-natured. She negotiated with the kitchen on our behalf and we all had just what we wanted. The roast lamb was declared succulent and delicious by the meat eaters. Thank you so much!

Anton's Bistrot is the name given to the pub part of The Crown at Wells. Given the supposed history of the building we didn't quite feel the age and charm. It's not been decorated to display the building's best features. It feels kinda humble and slightly down at heel inside. Centrally located, with three cask ales and serving food it could be said to be more useful than attractive. It's not unpleasant, however, and I think there's potential for someone with a good eye to present the interior in a more sympathetic manner. Service was pleasant. Food was just a tad over average, and while quite tasty, not quite what you'd expect for the price. It's an OK place, and does the job; it's just not a special place where you'd take your girlfriend to propose marriage. This is not a negative review, it's an honest account of how we found the place - it's in general OK, and while we found the decor a little lacking in style and inspiration and not to our taste, and the food a little lacklustre and perhaps a tad pricy, that is not to say we disliked the place, nor that we wouldn't use it again when next in Wells. We just didn't find it special. The staff were friendly, the place was relaxed and warm; there's nothing bad about the place. On that account it's what we would say is average, which is why we have given it an average score rather than a negative score.

My husband and I came in to Antons for a meal following a recommendation from our host. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. I won't go into detail but the main cause for our complaint came from the slow cooked steak, it was hard, extremely overdone and had no taste, it wasn't slow cooked so much as annihilated. I didn't eat it and was rewarded with half the main course deducted from the bill on the grounds that I had eaten some of my meal (roasted cherry toms, some carrots and an onion!), which to The Crown was worth £8.47! No so to me unfortunately. They need to revisit their cooking and their response to complaints!

Anche i dessert erano all'altezza. Da raccomandare assolutamente!

We visited this restaurant for my mum's 80th. The food was amazing. My mum had a whole sea bass which was huge and cooked perfectly and at £17 wasn't overly expensive. My sister had the duck which came with some lovely accompaniments. I had tuna with noodles and pakchoi I did ask for the tuna medium rare and it was cooked well done (probably was frozen) but I still enjoyed the dish. Wine was good value and we had creme brulee for dessert which was very creamy with a great crunchy topping. We had a very nice evening and the staff were great.

Excellent food in a charming setting right in the marketplace in Wells. The front room echoes a lot, especially if there is a big group, so we preferred the back room. Daughter loved the beetroot with goat cheese, son loved the squid. Many choices. Wait staff was cordial and welcoming. Note: Get there before 9 PM if you want to order dinner.

We went here for lunch today. It was our Wedding Anniversary and on our visit to Wells, we chose this delightful-looking Inn to have lunch at.There were 2 couples in the dining room when we arrived. The welcome from staff was ok, and they sat us down and we ordered drinks. Mine arrived with ice which I had not requested, but hey-Ho, it wasn't anything to get cross about. We sat and waited for our order to be taken, then we sat and waited. While we were waiting, the staff apologised to one of the couples behind us and said their order was "on its way right now!"We were still sitting and waiting.......Staff delivered one of the lunches to the table behind us. After about 7 minutes, the couple asked where the other lunch was that they had ordered. Staff grudgingly explained that they had misunderstood the order and they thought that they only wanted one lunch to share. We were still waiting.........After about 35 minutes, I ventured to the bar which had 2 staff standing around, doing diddly squat! I asked if there was any way they could take our order. They immediately started to blame each other for not doing what they should have been doing and came over and took the order. No apology was offered, but they did admit they had forgotten about us.We ordered 2 hot sandwiches. And then we waited...............Need I say more? The lunches took half an hour to arrive and were nothing special. The potato salad was al dente at best!At no point was an apology offered for the poor service and to be honest, I really do not think they realised what poor customer service they provided. There are plenty of other eateries in Wells and I really do wish we had chosen one of them instead!

We enjoyed a well prepared lunch at Anton's Bistrot. Chicken satay appetizer, soup, desserts delectable. What they don't know is how to make a good burger. Meat was overworked, so dry and tough. More like a meatloaf, and not a good one at that. Perhaps they should invite Bobby Flay in to give them instructions.

The inn dates from around 1450. Although The Crown at Wells still is a hotel, it also houses Anton’s Bistrot. Our service was very good and the generous portions were delicious. They also have outside seating in a court yard. It was just a nice experience.

We visited twice while visiting Wells at the end of May. I was dubious at first as it looked like an obvious tourist trap being a stone's throw from the cathedral - how wrong I was. We had a sharing platter and a couple of beers sitting outside in the courtyard at the back. The staff were friendly and helpful even though they were rushed off their feet with a party of foreigners ordering and paying separately and not understanding the menu or the currency! The beers were local and very good and the platter was great for two of us for a tasty lunch. Freshly cooked and good value for money.

We were staying overnight at the Crown so decided to dine in the Bistro and we were looking forward to it. We had reserved a table and it didn't seem too busy at 7.30pm when we arrived but we were surprised that our meal wasn't served till around 50 minutes after ordering. We had to ask for the dessert menu twice. For my main the mussels were plentiful, if on the small side, but the sauce was tasty. My other half's tuna steak had to be sent back as it was too rare in the middle but the second time it was OK. The desserts were different. I thought I would try the chocolate and thyme parfait and we also ordered a rhubarb flan - both interesting interpretations by the chef. We only found out later, on overhearing a conversation, that there were delays in the kitchen, presumably on a busy night catering for the hotel's other eatery - the Penn Bar. If that was so, someone could have explained - maybe we would have been sympathetic rather than a bit bewildered. No one asked us how the meal was for us. Would have given it a higher rating but the service wasn't attentive and we got the impression the staff were not that focused.

On a walk in basis we were seated quickly and without hassle. Food was truly delightful, we had the chicken and beef blade, wonderful. Only issue with the whole experience was the speed of table service, after we had eaten our main our plates sat on the table for a good 15 minutes and it wasn't until we caught someone's attention that they cleared them up. Same again after dessert. At no point were we asked how the food was and we had to approach the bar to pay for our bill. Would certainly return as the food was outstanding and recommend to anyone who is patient.

Very attentive and friendly staff. The food was absolutely delicious, I had the blade of beef which was cooked to perfection and my husband had the sirloin steak which was also cooked as requested and was also delicious. The restaurant is separated into two rooms, we were seated in the room at the front of the building which has an old fireplace very tastefully adorned with candles and pretty lights. A truly lovely dining experience.

This was meant to be a Bistro experience with a Bistro Menu and an atmosphere to suit. However, the dining room had noisy background piped music, noisy pub clientele eating their pub-grub from the Pub Grub Bar menu and poorly trained waiting staff. Nothing wrong with that if located in the pub but this was meant to be a Bistro experience hence the separate Bistro menu. We were not expecting to be overwhelmed by the overflow from the bar dining area. We had a table booked at a set time but did not receive our first course until 45 minutes after ordering and the tuna steak ordered rare had to be sent back as it was extremely "well done". Food was tasty it must be said but not really of the standard to be expected from a good bistro. The service was fair as to be expected from untrained / poorly trained staff.

This was my first visit to the Crown and I wasn't disappointed. I was initially attracted because it is dog friendly and I had Jack, my springer with me. Good friendly service and reasonable value. I had the Tai green curry which was delicious. I will definately be going back for more of that. They had good ale as well. Jack didn't get any biccies, but because he was so well behaved they might not have known he was there. I recommend the Crown if you are in Wells.

In a town of excellent, varied restaurants this may be the best. Cheery staff. Marvellous food with a Middle Eastern twist. Perhaps the best "full works breakfast' that I have ever had. A pleasant atmosphere, and come the warmer weather, a nice garden. Watch out for the unusual Wednesday/Thursday closure days

My group booked a table at this apparently excellent local restaurant, I received a call 2 hours before our sitting informing me that my group could only be sat outside due to having a dog despite it being winter and having booked a table at this "dog friendly" restaurant months and months ago. Absolutely appalling behaviour, avoid, avoid, avoid.

Staff were lovely the food was delicious. Taste and quality of the food was amazing. There was 8 of us and we ordered the queen's feast for 8 people. Again no issues all very happy with the food it. Only slight critique was more bread needed. We were given so many lovely dips and there just wasn't enough bread to dip ratio. Definitely be back to try some of the other dishes! Thank you for a delicious lunch and another great thing is the restaurant is dog friendly!
