The Old Tannery in Mendip

We visited 5th March for dinner. What a great place! Part community centre and art hub, part event space and part bar / restaurant. The staff went out of their way to make us welcome, the chef owner is a whizz in the kitchen and the prices are reasonable. I had Lamb Tagine (superb) and my Wife had Tagliatelle (also superb). Oh, try the sticky toffee pudding - it's the best you'll ever have. Wonderful use of an old building - I really recommend a visit for young or old. Brilliant.

I couldn’t fault this place. Excellent food; very decent service; reasonably priced. I would definitely go again, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Obviously it’s not The Ritz, but it is very good.

I’ve eaten at The Old Tannery before, and further back when it was Bocabar. Until this visit, the experience had always been a positive one, and the quality of the food excellent. On this occasion, unfortunately, particularly given that we are out with friends for a celebration, we’re left very disappointed. The menu is short and seasonal, and we’ve always liked that. Having said that, we were told that there was no steak available - this on a not very busy Friday night. The main courses, once ordered, took over a hour to arrive, even though none of them were particularly complicated. We did notice that there were only two people in the kitchen, which might have explained the delay. The Brixham fish stew was virtually all salmon with a few mussels thrown in for good measure. The broth was good, but the rest was sadly lacking.the pork was hot but had a cold Muhammara type sauce on top which hadn’t been listed on the menu. Sticky toffee pudding for dessert was the high point, but the chocolate bavarois (usually a soft, set custard) was nothing of the sort. It was a small pot full of a very hard-set solid chocolate. When we commented that it was not what we expected , the waitress checked with the kitchen and came back to say she thought it was a bavarois which had just set a bit hard - I’ve often made bavarois, and this definitely wasn’t that. Service was not very attentive and lacklustre, rounding off an evening which was not a good advert for the restaurant, nor one which would ever encourage us to return, even this was an off day.

We had a gorgeous Sunday dinner we both had the beef and it melted in your mouth, all the veg and gravy and Yorkshire puddings were delicious, not many I’ve had lately has been nicer than the one I make at home, the staff were good, they were short staffed by one, but coped very well.

Great for an evening meal. Had a lovely mezze to start all elements were really fresh and fresh all local ingredients, had a chicken and romanesca sauce, this was perfect. Would definitely recommend. Portions are on the generous side

When we arrived we weren’t sure where we had come to! We didn’t do our research and we’re expecting a pub but it’s an old factory on an industrial estate. Once inside though, it was great! Relaxed, comfortable, friendly staff and stunning food! We both had the fish stew and it was just delicious. If we return to the area we will definitely go back.

Food was delicious, two kid's meals (fish and chips & Pasta) They loved it! Also seven Sunday roasts, all agree, one of the best they'd ever had. Lastly, two fish stews, wow, they were beautiful. Best sticky toffee pudding ever, lovely and moist. Not expensive at all! Every member of the staff that we met were friendly and helpful. We had a great long table that sat all eleven of us, a bonus! Nice atmosphere and spotless. Lovely outside area as well, but it was raining, we will try that next time. Must admit when we drove in we thought it was an industrial estate and that we had taken the wrong turning, but learnt later from a friend, who is a local and involved with all that is going on in the area, that it is a work in progress, not The Old Tannery, the surroundings, loads of improvements going on. A very disappointing experience. Our meal was very slow to come and when it arrived of a very poor standard. The Brixham fish stew was 90% salmon and a few mussels thrown in. It had clearly been microwaved as parts were hot and others cold. The vegetarian burger wasn’t hot all the way through either and was very small for the price. We were sat outside with young children and when we walked down to the garden together, a member of our party had to race ahead and pull our young children quickly out the way as the gate which opens directly onto the very busy road was wide open. Needless to say we won’t be returning!

The Chargrilled Brocolli was the star on the menu. Such amazing flavours. The Halloumi burger looked great too. All locally sourced food prepared by a chef that knew his stuff. The staff were super friendly and the atmosphere relaxing. Great dinner, would recommend five stars.

The Sunday beef roast was cooked to perfection with a gorgeous selection of vegetables served by your lovely staff. Made our afternoon as we were starving !!

Lovely food, great service. We love this place, we've eaten here every time we visit Glastonbury (every year) and it is always superb. We have also had breakfast on a couple of occasions, the menu is varied and each meal is perfectly done.

It's always a pleasure to dine here, attentive staff, excellent chef and a changing menu featuring local suppliers that also caters for vegetarian and vegans too. The beers and ciders are different to the 'norm' in Glastonbury (no Guinness or Thatchers) so expect something different.
