I was taken to the Spice Tavern by friends for an early meal yesterday evening August 12th. I am disabled and have an assistance dog. We were refused entry with my dog and were told to leave her in the car. As the temperature outside was 30 degrees, that was not going to happen! Needles to say, we will not be going there again or recommending it! We went to the Black Horse in Hookwood, Horley where my dog and I were made very welcome and we had an absolutely delicious curry

What can I say. We haven't been out for months and our first trip, at my suggestion, was to your restaurant in Newdigate. The food that we had was OK, just things we ordered were not available, then the portions were very small, especially the rice. In addition we asked for water which was forgotten, twice. One of the starters was wrong and had to be corrected Then, when the Bill arrived I nearly fell off my chair! It was SO expensive, and a 15% service charge on top? To tell us you had run out of Mushrooms! I didn't want to make a scene in front of my family, as it was my idea in the first place, so we paid and left...

The Ali raj years ago was excellent, it then went down hill with poor service and below average food, we stopped going, now I’m glad to say it’s under new management and is now called Spice Tavern, with a very nice pleasant proprietor who has been in the area for a number of years , due to redevelopments of his other restaurant location he has finally got a superb location and place to settle down and call his own, good luck Adam and see you soon,

Visited on Friday night. Once again another superb meal. Very relaxing restaurant. Staff friendly. As usual the food was delicious. My only criticism is that the wine prices never match what's on the menu, but it's only ever £1-£2 out, and is not that much of an issue. Well worth a visit as this place is a hidden gem. The best curry house in Surrey.

Went there as a last minute decision. Well I really wish we hadn't. Chicken 65 was my wife's starter. Dry chewy and not nice. I had chicken chat. Boiled chicken with limp cucumber over powered by white pepper. Main course was no better. We thought we'd been transported back to the 70s .all in all a really poor experience never to be repeated. Totally understand why the place was almost empty.

OMG - the worst take away food for a long while- spent over 10 years in the village when you could not eat there - had heard it had changed but it will be a lot longer than 10 years before another attempt is made Ordered a very simple take away meal that was totally inedible and went straight into the bin

I regularly use this restaurant as it is located in my village. Such a great place and the food is particularly excellent. Hadn't booked but managed to get a table on Saturday night. Food was delicious as always and the staff were friendly. I would have given 5 stars but we were overcharged by £3 on our wine. I'm sure it was just an oversight so didn't say anything. I would highly recommend this place though. Best curry in the area.

This review isn’t based on the food as the food is one of the best I’ve tasted for Indian. Me and my partner visit on a regular basis for the amazing food but on numerous occasions have been greeted by one very rude staff member. He is very dismissive, arrogant and lacks people skills! This waiter becomes impatient and we always feel rushed when being served by him. If we’re not ready to place our order when he wants us too he rolls his eyes! This one waiter does let the restaurant down. All over staff members don’t make us feel like this. I think management should maybe look into his staffing as I’ve noticed this isn’t the only review that mentions him.

Have been a regular for take always at the Ali Raj for the last five years and the food has always been the very highest quality. This week we ordered two different chicken dishes and a prawn one. The prawn one was deemed to be good. But both chicken dishes were not good. Tough, flavourless (cheap?) chicken. Both dishes left unfinished. Roll forward a day and the view is that for the money we paid we get better value and better quality from a Charlie Bighams from Waitrose for a Chicken Tikka Masala. Don’t mind paying for a good take away curry but not impressed with how the quality has declined here . Would have given two stars but for the great food in the previous five years. Perhaps the chef was having a bad night. But I’m not prepared to pay for that. You have been warned....

Poppadum’s over cooked, samosas & bahjis under cooked & soggy. Rice nice. Sheek kebab luke warm. Chicken rogan ok but bland. Won’t be returning & wouldn’t recommend. Such a shame.

After being recommended the Ali Raj, my family and I decided to give it a try. On arrival the car park is the the scruffiest, badly kept area I have ever seen in a restaurant car park. Only because its Newdigate that I felt comfortable leaving my car there. The outside of the restaurant is scruffy and it didn't inspire confidence in us as to the food! Internally its dingy with tables too close together and lacked atmosphere. All this was before we had our food! The service was average with bored looking waiters and the food was uninspiring. We ordered a wide variety of dishes whereby some were tasty and other downright bland. Considering the busy pub opposite and in a well to do area I'm surprised this restaurant has so much lacking and with so much potential for a fine dining Indian cuisine. Suffice to say we will not be eating there again.

The food was very good, we had a mixed starter and all liked it. Staff are efficient and helpful. A meal for 6 of us cost £180 so prices seem average to me. Living just down the road from here and as the only curry house within a reasonable distance we often remark how lucky we are that it is so good.Friendly service, can seem a little officious as remarked by others, but when there are a lot of people in the restaurant it can be noisy and as their popadoms are so good it can be difficult for them to get attention of diners to place their orders!Food is great, plenty of parking and service is always quick - often have takeaways and always good value.

We've been getting takeaway from the Ali Raj for a few years, and the food never disappoints. We recently joined some friends there for a sit-down meal.Waitstaff were efficient but rude. They issued demands for our orders with a 'please' added to the end, which I suppose was meant to make it seem polite. "DRINKS, please!" "STARTERS, please!" It was all quite bemusing, like being in an episode of Seinfeld. That said, the food is very good, so if you don't mind being ordered around by the waiters, you'll probably be fine. We'll go with the takeaway from now on.

We visited here during July for a curry. I had previously had a takeaway curry from Ali Rag which lacked flavour and seemed like the flavours had not been developed and instead rushed. Nether less we opted to dine in and give it another go. I myself ordered a Makani of which was no different flavour wise to a korma. The curry seemed to be a frozen Korma with a lump of butter placed in the microwave and was not a Makani. The curry arrived with a layer of butter on top which made me think that a lump of butter had just been added to a frozen korma and had just been placed in the microwave in a bowl of which had not been stirred etc... The dishes were boiling hot and the curry's all seem to be frozen and then reheated in a microwave, there was no sign of a chef just waiters. I think they freeze all their curry's and then heat in microwave due to lack of thickness in sauce instead a watery texture. I will not be revisiting.

I have to be honest and say that we have found the menu (we mainly have a takeaway) a bit hit and miss. I think to be fair it depends on the chef/management at the time. Whilst the food is fine (we've never had any particular problem) , as I said, it is slightly variable in quality. That's fine as long as you know that I guess. It's not particularly put us off returning.

Having looked at paying this place a visit for ages, finally made it in! Heard a few good recommendations so expected a pleasant experience. Frequent visitor to the Surrey Oaks pub and a big fan of curry ever since living in Leicester where I was lucky to enjoy the cuisines of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan frequently and at many levels of expertise. I think we expected too much, often out of town establishments such as this offer a better-than-Friday night kind of experience Nothing wrong with that but I don't think the price was justified in the food in this instance. That aside, the main problem here was the unfriendliness. We are a very friendly young family with well behaved, polite and unprecocious children. I do not know what was up with the waiters but they sure did not offer any form of welcome. It all seemed too much effort and we really felt unwelcome and an bit too much of a bother. Look, a curry is a curry, but friendliness costs nothing. We won't be back, we can find this level of food elsewhere, for less money and the smiles and welcome are freely offered. Lighten up Ali Raj.

Big light and airy, a couple of families inside a good sign.As 'we' had a bad day nothing on the menu was good enough, so my wife described a meal that she'd had elsewhere recently, the waiter took the description to chef who then cooked it!! And it was excellent, and we will be going back soon, although having been told what it has been called we still cannot remember so we will have to describe again. The food was very good, there cannot be many restaurants that will cook meals not on the menu. I went to this place expecting a gourmet experience; what I actually got was an acute dose of food poisoning. I contacted the owner (Mr. Ali) who told me to come in and see him regarding my complaint, when I went he was rude, overbearing and tried to dismiss my complaint as bogus. A thoroughly cavalier attitude and total disregard for customer satisfaction. He claims to have sold 60 of the dishes I was served without complaint. I can only conclude that that the people eating there that night had little or no regard to what they consume or Mr Ali is being less than forthcoming with the truth. Either way, an extremely bad show, not only getting bad curry but the dismissive attitude in which my complaint was (non) handled.

We have been visiting this restaurant since 1984. In all the time we have been there the standard of the food has been magnificent. Their secret is they use all natural spices and that's the key to a good curry.I always eat prawn dansaks and my wife always has a chicken dish. The chicken always melts in the mouth and I have always tried to replicate my own chicken curries to achieve the same result Sadly I have never achieved their standard of delicious food. I’ve been searching for some time for an Indian restaurant that would not only welcome me and those I am with, but my Guide Dog as well.I accept that there is legislation regarding the admission of assistance dogs, but would you want to visit somewhere were you weren’t really welcome? So a bundle of stars for diversity and inclusion before I had even set foot in the place. Then my rating, diversity aside, 5 stars, yum yum.Portions were generous, when I eat out I do want to eat out, food was delicious, staff were friendly, atmosphere was very relaxed, the bill represented good value for money.I’ll need to go back soon, and probably keep going back as there are lots of different dishes on the menu that I’d like to try.The chicken Rezala was excellent, as was my wife’s Sea Bass, I had to have a little taste.I didn’t take the dog on this occasion, but it has been made clear to me that she’d be welcome, so as is unfortunately not the case with many similar establishments I have the choice.

The food as always was very good here. The dishes have clear distinct flavours which is sometimes not found in indian restaurants where you often wonder if they just use a base sauce for the majority of dishes. The service of the food was efficient, but we had to re-order drinks twice and when they came had to send some back as they were incorrect. This is a bit of an anomaly as having visited before I've not had that issue.

Some friends and I were going to a concert in Dorking Halls last Saturday evening and wanted somewhere to eat after the show. We decided to go for Indian as those establishments are usually open late and we wouldn't be arriving until around 10pm. We booked in advance but were slightly perplexed that they seemed worried about accepting the booking (for four people) as they closed at 11.30. We were planning to arrive for 10 o'clock, so didn't understand the problem. As it transpired, the concert overran and we were going to be 10 minutes late and so showed them the courtesy of calling ahead to let them know. This sent them into quite a spin because they "closed at 11.30" (we were still on course to be there by 10 past 10) and it was "up to us" if we wanted to continue our journey there. All very odd, we thought. We arrived and found the restaurant very pleasantly decorated with just the right mix of traditional and modern. The welcome we received, however, although not quite in the surly category, was cool to say the least. We had chosen this restaurant above other (more easily accessible) ones in the Dorking area because of the reviews and also because the menu looked different and interesting (always nice to have a change). The house red wine, which three of us had, was quite drinkable, but my draft Cobra was not as chilled as it should have been. The food arrived, placed on hot plates (a nice, nowadays unusual touch) and we tucked in. I have to say that, as a foodie generally, curry connoisseur and partner of a professional chef, the quality of the food was among the best I have tasted anywhere. It was obvious that fresh herbs and spices had been used and infused properly into the flavour of the dishes. I would certainly eat there again and would recommend the food to anyone who likes to explore a wide range of Indian food.Others have commented on the poor service. By the time we arrived, the restaurant was quiet and the service was fine. Our waiter even warned to us a bit when we chatted with him. However, the initial impression the staff give in this restaurant can do them no favours at all and I urge them to be more welcoming to customers and prospective customers. This fault is the only thing preventing me giving Ali Raj five stars.

I used to live round the corner from this restutante and would eat here every Saturday evening. After moving out of area, we decided to go back as a treat. Hands down it is the best Indian I've had. Nothing in my local compares to the food and if I lived closer I'd still be coming here. It's been 6 years since I last came and it is still exceptional. Great food great staff and brings back great memories

We go to the Ali Raj quite regularly now since our local Indian has closed. We usually go with friends and have a lovely time- the food is fantastic however what really really lets this place down is the service, I wish the guys were just a little bit more happier in their job and made a little bit more effort; this place would be perfect. It won't stop us going but we do always feel the need to tell our friends that the food is great but the service isn't that brilliant... Such a shame.

Surprising location but the Ali Raj has been established there for years which is testimony to the Indian cuisine and pleasant staff. We enjoy it enough to make a ten mile journey to get there!

Third visit to this great restaurant.Once again fantastic food served by great staff.I cannot understand some of the previous reviews criticizing the service. As far as I am concerned the service here is second to none.Courteous.pleasant and efficient.Perhaps it's a case of how you treat the staff in the first place, is a guide to what you get back!I have seen many times, customers being pompous and rude,so I suppose they get what they deserve in return!!Anyway, once again the food was excellent, with my family enjoyingall the meals, with what has to be the most tender chicken going!!Congratulations to all at the Raj,for wonderful meals, service and a great evening.

How frustrating. Our first visit based on revues and recommendation but the service was just so bad. Felt like walking out but felt waiters would have taken that as an achievement! The food however was lovely, so really don't know what to make of this restaurant...... at least we could retired to the Surrey Oaks opposite for a few passable beers.

This restaurant looks impressive: elegant and clean, and the food was very good. A Tuesday night special gives a starter, main, side, bread/rice and coffee for £13, which was excellent value. The service, however, was very disappointing. Our food was served promptly, but the waiting staff (on a very quiet evening) were inattentive and less than cheerful. From other reviews I'm assuming we were unlucky and went on a bad night, but I certainly won't be hurrying back.

We had spent a lovely evening with friends at the pub opposite and decided to go for a meal afterwards. The service was slow which would have been fine if it weren't for the tasteless food that my husband had. It was chicken biriani and vegetable curry. The biriani had very few dried pieces of chicken and the so called vegetable curry included frozen vegetables. Not what we would expect from a traditional Indian restaurant. On top of this the owner was extremely rude when we said how disappointed we were. He could have sorted this out and apologised but clearly didn't feel that we deserved this. Instead he ruined our evening and we will not be returning.

We visited Ali raj on 23rd May after a lovely evening with friends at the surrey oaks pub opposite. After hearing many good reviews, we were looking forward to a great Indian meal. However, the service was very slow, although not hugely busy as most customers in there had already got their food. It took a long time for the food to arrive and when it did, we were disappointed. I had tandoori salmon which was average and my partner had a chicken rassala which was also only average. However our friends had the biriani which consisted of very little dried up scraps of chicken and a frozen mixed vegetable side curry which had an 'interesting' flavour. When the waiter asked if our meal was ok, we took the opportunity to explain our disappointment with the biriani. Our waiter (the owner), tried to deny the use of packet vegetables and was extremely rude. Eventually he admitted the veg was frozen. We asked to have the biriani removed from the bill, to which he remarked that we couldn't afford to pay. We were perfectly happy to pay for the other meals, but the biriani was extremely poor so we felt it was only fair to have that item removed from our bill. We could have forgiven the poor food, if we had been treated a lot better...clearly the owner does not care and has no manners. Can't understand who would put themselves out and drive to a restaurant like this when there are so many other superb Indian restaurants around.

We had a takeaway last night and were completely blown away! We have had takeaways from there in the past and they have always been good, however last nights was in a different league. The meat was so moist and flavours so fresh and tasty. If you only ever try one curry once, it has to be from here!

Have been to the Ali Raj on a few occasions and have enjoyed the food each time. Was a bit hurried just as we sat down as to how many poppadums we would like. Also service can sometime be quick and sometimes not, doesn't matter how busy they are.Ali Raj is always busy with take-aways but never tried.

I had been told by various chums this was the best curry house in the Dorking area and was excited to go for my partner's birthday meal with family. I was badly disappointed. Food was reasonable but uninspiring. This was overshadowed by the attitude of the staff who were rude, inattentive and grudging of any request - be it from getting water for the table, taking additional orders, bringing coats so items could be retrieved. It was a Friday night and they were 2/3rds empty so rush is no excuse. Then the bill arrived and seemed a bit steep. One of our group wanted to pay precisely for their bit - so we worked it out twice and they'd overcharged us by £15 or so - hiding behind a hieroglyphic receipt. I would have just split it normally, but I'm glad we didn't. When we tried to raise it the staff smiled sheepishly and avoided our gaze. They knew we'd caught them out. So we paid - left them the overcharge as the tip - and left. . In this day and age...just terrible to do that. I won't be back. There are many other good curry houses in the area, this isn't one of them.

Very average food (frozen veg was obvious ie diced carrots in a prawn dish. Poppadoms were good. Staff were so abrupt, unfriendly an rude. Couldn't understand why as the restaurant only had one other table. Often drive past and see no diners inside. Surely they should provide a welcoming a nice experience to entice locals to return. It made me question their reason for being at such a large, expensive premises.I crying shame as the pub opposite is beautiful with exceptional service would love to be able to end the evening with a lovely curry. Not possible currently with the way this place is run.

I’ve recently returned to living in Fetcham. Having had a wonderful years-long relationship with the local Indian restaurant at our old place, settling on a new one was high priority…! We’ve had two great meals from Fetcham Tandoori so far. Can’t fault the food - two different orders, and everything was perfect. It’s a little more expensive than I’m used to - they add £3.00 to delivery orders. Having been a delivery driver myself, I can’t not tip the driver in cash too, so it adds up. However, you can create an account to track your orders and build loyalty points, so I guess that will balance things off before long, and you can set a delivery time. On both occasions, they’ve been more than prompt. So far, really impressed, and looking forward to many more delicious deliveries. 👍🏻
