Algarve's Grill in Portsmouth

Friendly staff, ok food, i wish I tried something else on the menu! There was a funky smoke smell which clung to our clothing.

It’s my first visit to Portsmouth and I must say that I am having a wonderful time here with my family. I would like to emphasise that Algarve’s Grill is simply amazing in every aspect: culinary, decoration and especially the staff -they’re extremely friendly.

Huge portions but staff very quick to offer takeaway boxes. The boss is a truly lovely man.

To say this is an excellent restaurant is an understatement. It's one of the best restaurants in terms of food and atmosphere I've been in. The food is of such high quality and in turn taste produced to a high standard time after time. For me it's our go to place to eat when we really need a good slap up meal. The owner and his staff are very friendly and helpful. They offer some authentic Portuguese dishes alongside an extensive menu containing a dish for all tastes. The portions are large without being off-putting. We tend to share main meals between our party as to get a real taste of the menu. I would definitely recommend this but please call ahead and book before your visit, even mid week! *Edited review June 2021, original posted 2 years ago* *Edited review to add photos April 2024, review still stands*

The food was nice but we had to keep re asking the waiters for drinks and the bill as they kept forgetting and the restaurant smelt like fire and now we do too which is grim

Easter Bank Holiday where to go. As most places closed. Which was good luck. In my job role I cover 35 - 50 pubs Hotels & restaurants per week. Algraves of Southsea Portsmouth. Absolutely Glorious. Excellent service friendly staff from Manager to waitress to even the Chef coming out & asking about how was your food. Trust me alot of places could learn a lesson from the whole experience here at Algraves. Starters were great hot & Excellent size portions. Biggest chicken wings apart from being abroad I've ever had. The main? Well Algraves Special Paella. This was enough for four people. Mussels / crevettes/ chicken/ half a lobster / chirozo in exceptionally tasty typical rice saffron flavours. Second main , Half a lobster again & steak cooked perfectly. Desserts as if there was room . A classic take on Banoffee pie. Large waffle ice cream caramel syrup & cooked Bananas. Then the classic Portuguese Chocolate cake. Full of flavour. Then on the house two lovely shots of Portuguese port. From the Staff. My only complaint is to staff. Food is priced too cheap. Compared to what I see at other places. I would highly recommend Coming here. Three components covered. Excellent hospitality Excellent food Excellent prices. You must take a visit here.

Terrible smokey atmosphere for some reason leaving smell on clothes. Stupid fine print on special deal at Easter when the place was empty which meant a £20 premium over the online and menu advertised price. Check the offered tapas deal is valid or be prepared to walk away

On a two day visit to Portsmouth, had a fabulous meal at this restaurant, the tapas was brilliant I had ribs for main course the ribs was the best I have tasted anywhere. My partner had cod and loved it. Highly recommended, if I lived in portsmouth we would dine here weekly. Thanks for a great night experience.

Busy restaurant food not the best but atmosphere and service makes up for the negatives. First visit, not sure of an early return.

Great food, very warm welcome by the boss/manager and staffs, wonderful music. One of the best Sangria I had in UK. The grilled fish skewer is tender and delicious. We had a really fantastic evening with my family. Highly recommanded and would defiantly come again.

The food is delicious, and the staff are very friendly. The only downside was we felt a little bit rushed, but it was very busy as was a Friday night. The decor is awesome especially the car on the wall. Would highly recommend.

Went for a birthday meal. We were all a bit disappointed. I have been before Both my partner and I had steak and lobster, the lobster was very dry One of our party had the 20 oz steak, which came out as two thin 10oz steaks, very disappointing The Sangria only had orange slices, no other fruit, Will we go again, no, I don't think so. It was so good we had been before

We looked online for this place as we wanted a change for what we regularly eat as I'm very fussy about my food, I rang this place to book a table with my wife and I have to say I was very impressed, not only was the decor amazing but the food was delicious. In all my years I don't think I have ever had grilled chicken this moist and tasty with mushrooms and oh my god it was perfect this is now our regular place to eat thank you 😊

Algarve grill is the place to be! The food is fantastic and the staff are absolutely lovely. This is the best place that i have been and whenever i come to Portsmouth i will be coming here and recommending it to everyone I had the sea bass today and it was cooked to perfection Thank you to everyone at the Algarve Grill for a terrific time.

My mum and I had a great meal here Christmas day. Food was delicious, service was great and staff were really really friendly. Definately going back before we leave Portsmouth.

Fantastic service, food was generally very good but slightly let down by a part of the dish for the price paid. I had the Carne de porco à alentejana. The pork was perfect juicy and tender with just the right amount of fat. The pickles and olives were delicious, but the clams were very small and did not add much to the dish, unfortunately. The waitors and waitresses were very friendly and added a good atmosphere. The decor is very strange, could do with simplifying as there is a lot going on. Overall, I had a very good experience at Algarve's grill and will be returning.

Had dinner here with the family and it was outstanding. Carolina was an amazing waitress and was always recommending dishes, and she was right every time! Food was spot on, great Portuguese and took me back to my trip there. Would absolutely recommend. (P.s. try the Traditional Portuguese Dessert, you won’t regret it!)

Service was good, squeeze us in last minute, some of the dishes were a bit bland, the atmosphere was good, and busy.

Feeling tired after a long day, we had an early dinner on a Monday evening in November. We felt energised by the warm atmosphere and welcome. We ordered the rice fish dish which was a generous portion with huge prawns in a tasty sauce. A bit messy, but great fun! We both ordered wine by the glass which was good. I didn't want the evening to end, so we rounded off with the brulé and cheese cake - both delicious. A relaxing and refreshing experience.

Portuguese food is always an excellent opinion and when it’s made with high quality as it is in this place, it takes the experience to another level.

Love this place. If you need to celebrate a special occasion, ignore the bland chain restaurants. This is far better. It's lively, a friendly atmosphere, amazing waitresses and the manager does the rounds to make sure you're OK. The food is sensational value. I cannot recommend it any higher

We had several tapas dishes, ribs, drinks and deserts. The food was nice, the ribs very nice, overall the prices are quite reasonable. We enjoyed it, but I feel it didn't quite live up to the high expectations we had from the recommendations of others. But it was recommended by several people, so maybe just differing tastes. We will probably be back at some point.

If I could rate this restaurant 0 I would. Visited this restaurant with my partner on a Sunday for a nice late lunch. We ordered some tapas to start with based off of the owners recommendation. The tapas was clearly not fresh, the ribs we had were very dry, the spicy tomato dip that accompanied the chicken was watery and tasteless and the breaded chicken was clearly brought in pre-made and frozen. We were disappointed with the food but did not want to complain and had high hopes for the paella that had also be recommended to us as a main. However, when the owner came to clear our plates and asked how the tapas had been, my partner simply asked if the food was fresh or frozen to which we had a very aggressive response and were made to feel extremely uncomfortable. At this point I already wanted to leave but we decided to see how our main was as we didn’t want to make a scene. Next the paella arrived, it was green slop. The rice was not paella rice it was simply white rice, which I wouldn’t have a big problem with if the dish hadn’t been called ‘paella’ and the rice hadn’t been absolute mush. The muscles in the paella were also extremely mushy and the seafood clearly was a frozen seafood mix that was not fresh. The larger prawns on top that still had their shells on were the chewiest prawns I’ve ever had and the small prawns within the rice tasted extremely fishy at which point we decided that we would just leave the appalling main, get the bill and go as we didn’t want to encounter further aggression from the owner. We asked for the bill from a separate waiter who then sent the owner over. He straight away began shouting and becoming extremely aggressive asking why we hadn’t eaten the paella and waving his hands in my partners face. He continued being extremely rude and did not even want to hear why we hadn’t been able to eat the food. He told us we were wrong and how dare we not like the food before ripping up the bill in my partners face and telling us to go, on the way out he then proceeded to hit my partner on the back. It was the worst experience of my life, I was also very sick in the evening (we’d visited at 3) and I hadn’t eaten anything else that day.

Mario and the team have bounced back after a year of lockdowns with their trademark fabulous food and superb customer service. The Algarve Grill is an absolute must if you’re in Portsmouth.

Best restaurant in the area! Tasty food and friendly staff. I come at least once a week, always worth it! Good menu variety and a vegetarian francesinha can be arranged when requested.

The food and service were excellent. Will definately be back next time we are staying in southsea. Very busy so definately would suggest to book ahead.

It's 4 years ago that we stumbled upon this place. Wandering along a road that mainly comprises restaurants, looking for somewhere to eat. This was the restaurant we picked.From that day on, it has been our favourite place to eat. The main reason for this is the owner. The whole vibe of the place can be traced to him. He greets you like a family member, is jovial and warm and clearly takes great pride in the establishment. This permeates through the place and the result is a staff of friendly, attentive and efficient waiters and a kitchen that, despite a full house, doesn't keep you waiting for your food.My partner and I are regulars but that's not because we're actually biased. We would recognise poor quality being hidden. It's because you are guaranteed (in our experience) an excellent evening of good food in a great atmosphere.The restaurant is well booked for this post-lockdown phase and that is no surprise. A meal here, on the first available opportunity, was just the thing needed.Do yourself a huge favour and discover the restaurant for yourself. It's unpretentious and welcoming. The food is excellent and good value and the staff will ensure you have a good experience. Definitely a place where you will (as the Portuguese owner would say) "enjoy your time"

I have eaten here on several occasions and the staff have always been friendly and attentive. My food has always been excellent quality , especially recommend the seafood , but meat dishes very good too. I have eaten in the Algarve many times and this restaurant is as close as eating on holiday. Excellent atmosphere not found elsewhere, and plenty of variety. Booking was not always essential prior to restrictions. I cannot wait to celebrate my birthday there this year on May 24th. Last year everything was closed. Hope to see you all very soon!

I have visited many silver star/ Michelin restaurants in the past and I have never ever experienced such amazing quality food. The ribs are divine, the steak is unbelievable. The staff are so lovely. Couldn’t recommend a better restaurant.

Lively atmosphere and very warm staff. We had a few tapas to start, lots of different flavours in there with the shripms being our favourite. Then a good size fish stew as my main, I had no conplain at the end of the meal. Would definitely recommend!

This restaurant was very, very busy and although they had good Covid precautions in place it was quite crowded so I didn’t feel as safe as I have in other establishments but having said that the staff were brilliant and the food excellent 😀

Really enjoyed our visit - we were in Portsmouth for just a couple of days and thought we’d support a local place rather than all the chains in Gunwharf quays. We weren’t disappointed, they were very accommodating with our pram and friendly to our 6 year old. My husband was very impressed with his steak and I enjoyed a fish stew. Rounded it all off with a lovely warm Portuguese tart. Would definitely go back.

We ate here again Friday night and another brilliant meal from Mario and the staff. We have had so many excellent meals here drinking beautiful Portuguese wine. Great tapas. Each of the mains I’ve had I’ve loved. My favourite dishes being Cataplana de Peixe (fish stew) Grilled Fish plater! Best place for seafood in Portsmouth in my view. The meat and chicken dish are also excellent. If friends come to visit this is where we always come as the standard is alway high. Already looking forward to my next meal here!

This is my absolute favorite restaurant in Portsmouth .The food is always fantastic and no matter what I order I am always delighted with my meal! Servers are also great and always efficient, happy and polite. Can’t wait to return and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for somewhere to eat in Portsmouth!

We booked a table at 5pm and were welcomed warmly. Ordered 6 tapas and a bottle of the house red. All of the food was so tasty, fresh and authentic. The wine although just the house bottle was lovely and easy drinking. Quirky dining room, really friendly staff and overall we had an excellent evening. We finished our meal and had a couple more beers, weren’t rushed out the door or anything. Would definitely recommend the Algarve’s Grill for dinner in Southsea.

Had high expectations for this restaurant based on reviews, but at least to my taste it was far from outstanding. A little pricey, service took long and food was salty. Next time I will try another one.

I and some friends found ourselves in Southsea, wanting to experiment some new food. We stumbled upon Algrave's Grill and thought we had never tried Portuguese food before so we would give it a go. We were not disappointed with our choice what so ever!! The food was amazing! We were greeted by a very authentic Portuguese atmosphere with all the staff speaking the language and were taken to a table by a very polite young waitress. She recommended us to try the tapas as it would introduce us to a variety of different dishes, seen as we hadn't tried the style of cuisine before. We were blown away by the Portuguese wings, pica pau and mushrooms on toast, I would highly recommend trying them! Also, the tapas were included in a deal where you got so many for a fixed price which was very reasonable. Overall, a very pleasant experience and would highly recommend anyone to try this Restaraunt as I will certainly be back again soon to try the mains off the menu!

Went there with my boyfriend on a Sunday for lunch, the food came out really quickly and with a high standard quality, which we were very impressed with. The food is authentic Portuguese cosine, the staff are lovely, everyone is really nice and always have a smile on their faces. It is very welcoming. It also contains a lot of Portuguese drinks. Strongly recommend this restaurant.

An exquisite taste of freshly cooked food that brought back a southern cuisine experience. The combination between the location of the grill, full of life atmosphere and very welcoming staff that is ready to send you in an immersive ambient of multicultural people are building the experience that anybody would expect from a real Portugal restaurant.Myself i served with my friend a simple steak with potatoes and rive, but as simple as it sounds it was rich in flavors and colorful taste. In my opinion you can extract the quality of an restaurant from simple dishes. I don't usually write reviews, but when i do it means i am really impressed and it left a wonderful mark on my hearth and soul ! Teníamos la intención de visitar este lugar después de leer las excelentes críticas, por lo que reservamos una mesa temprano en la noche. ¡Guauu! . . que experiencia tan maravillosa. El servicio al cliente es excelente, muy hablador y amigable. La comida es hermosa. Elegimos 6 tapas y una botella de tinto. Todos eran encantadores, los favoritos personales eran el falafel y las alitas de pollo portuguesas. Estaban muy ocupados, incluso a las 6 pm debido a las excelentes ofertas. Definitivamente volveremos.

Restaurante acogedor con decoración divertida. Acentos portugueses en la comida, pero muchas otras opciones variadas. Después de un gran almuerzo, comimos de la lista de tapas. El consejo del servidor de comenzar con 4 para compartir fue acertado. Los platos eran generosos y estaban preparados con ingredientes de alta calidad, especialmente los camarones, que en realidad eran 4 enormes langostinos. Sagres y Super Bock de barril. Precios muy atractivos para las tapas, e incluso mejores a la hora del almuerzo con algunas ofertas económicas que incluyen vino. Definitivamente regresaría.

Fui a almorzar. tuve calamares para comenzar mi compañero tenía las brochetas de pollo. Ambos estaban deliciosos. platos principales tuve solomillo, mi compañero tenía el solomillo de 20 onzas. ! ! de nuevo absolutamente delicioso. El personal fue muy amable y el servicio fue muy eficiente y rápido. Me lo recomendó un amigo y sin duda volveremos. darle una oportunidad .

About a third full on a Monday evening. Food was great when it eventually arrived, but took an age. Plus no nice little touches (like a complimentary limoncello). So if you are in the area I preferred Rocka a few doors away.

Entrar y conseguir una mesa es raro en estos días, pero nos recibieron con una sonrisa y nos encontraron mesa. La comida era increíble, salió muy rápido, a pesar de que el restaurante estaba lleno. ¡Tenía un sabor impecable, como debería! !Me impresionó más haber pedido champiñones de ajo que no estaban en el menú, el anfitrión hizo todo lo posible y me consiguió dicho hongo de ajo. En mi opinión, hizo todo lo posible para satisfacer mis necesidades, algo que no se ve mucho en el Reino Unido, así que gracias por eso. ¡El pollo algrave y la lubina estaban a punto! !Personal amable también, recomiendo este restaurante y volveré

Servicio excelente calidad de comida muy buena, tuvimos una selección de tapas con una botella de vino y una langosta. Lo disfrutó mucho, tendrá que reservar una mesa, ya que a veces puede estar ocupado. Volveré y se lo recomendaré a amigos y familiares cuando visite Portsmouth. Muchísimas gracias a Mario.

Este restaurante tiene un gran ambiente y los servicios fueron excelentes, amables y eficientes. Esperaba un menú de tapas, pero es una mezcla de tapas para empezar y platos principales más grandes.Éramos 3 y elegimos 3 tapas para empezar y compartir. Uno de ellos fueron las albóndigas y una de las razones para marcar esto desde 5 estrellas. La salsa podría y debería haber sido más rica en sabor. También teníamos Haloumi a la parrilla y brochetas de pollo que estaban bien. Tuve el estofado de pescado para platos principales, que era una gran porción que incluía gambas, pescado y patatas.
