We've just had a lovely dinner - would definitely recommend it. The chicken kottu was really good. Great food, great service and BYOB.

Ordered take away from here last night. It was poor. The rice was stale. The prawns were rubbery. The chicken was over cooked. The sauces were watery and bland. Poor quality, tasteless and stale. Won't be going back again.

We've been to this restaurant a few times and it's a favourite of ours. The dishes are all excellent and being able to choose any of the main courses as smaller thali dishes, and so having a selection, is a real plus. It is also fantastic value for money - the food is very reasonable and it is BYO with no corkage. You would struggle to eat at home for less. Thoroughly recommended, get yourself along there.

He hecho probado comida de Sri Lanka? Si te encanta la cocina india y asiática, sin duda para probar. Mejor servido en platos pequeños (Tali) que muestra una amplia variedad de sabores. La calidad es buena, el servicio amable y eficiente. Que un par de cerveza (en lugar de un vino) y tienes una combinación ganadora. Elegir varias servidas para compartir pero ten cuidado, el Tali puede parecer pequeño, pero es que la comida es muy abundante.

Nunca habíamos probado este lugar, hizo una rápida búsqueda de ta eemed 'genial!!! Era realmente una sensación algo de comida bien sazonada. Ale y especias, introduzca el lugar estaba vacío pero según comentarios no disuadir.

Si nunca lo has probado la comida de Sri Lanka (y no habíamos) entonces este restaurante y no te decepcionará. Pedimos una mezcla de platos y Kottu thali y realmente estaban deliciosos. Lo que es más, la comida es sorprendentemente razonable para esta parte de la ciudad y el servicio es servido con una sonrisa. Si la comida en Sri Lanka era tan popular como la india, entonces estoy seguro de que hubiera estado haciendo fila para una mesa. No puedo recomendar lo suficiente.

Small restaurant in Balham. They do delivery as well. Tali size...so small dishes. Perfect for sharing. We order regularly. Quality is very good and service is friendly. Price/quality makes it one of the best ones in the area. Call for take-away as they do not always check their online orders immediately.Worth checking out

Visited here with my girlfriend on a Thursday using a 'Taste Card'. When we arrived, the atmosphere was pretty dead and it was quite cold, we were 2 of 4 people on the place. It's the sort of environment that needs to be busy to be great.The waitress was lovely but a little slow, surprising considering the place was quiet.We chose a selection of Thali's (an assortment of small dishes, akin to tapas). Although the wait was longer than you'd expect, the food was absolutely delicious and fresh! Worth the wait, we enjoyed every morsel.Considering the wide choice locally of Asian cuisine in this area, it rivaled that of its nearby competion really well and certainly out did some for price, without losing quality.4 of 5 - top notch grub, the service could do with turning up a bit though.

We tried something new getting a Sunday night take away from here. This cuisine is generally alien to us but a refreshing difference from your typical good British curry house. Most of the dishes we ordered were nice but a few were bland. We probably ordered the wrong things tending to keep on the mild side.The mains are quite small so don't be afraid to order an extra one. We would order again but be a bit more adventurous. Also living nearby the restaurant looks appealing and we will visit soon. Taste card accepted I understand. Thanks!

Visited here on Friday night, we did the BYOB (no corkage charge!). Staff were lovely & welcoming. We chose to have the Thali option (like tapas), food was delicious & hot, also very reasonably priced for Balham. This place is amazing, can't fault it & we'll be back, highly recommended!

Arrived a little early, but shown to our pre booked table for two. Initial impressions were that the service would be quite formal and cool...how wrong I was. As our evening progressed the service became much warmer and friendly...exactly what I enjoy. The woman serving us was knowledgeable and happy to go that extra mile to assist us. After an excellent Sri Lankan meal, well prepared and presented attractively, I asked if the restaurant served traditional Sri Lankan deserts (not ice cream). Despite not being on the menu, the chef was consulted and a selection of five sweets was presented. I was blown away by the happy service and great food...thank you Ale and Spice, I will be back soon.

Wow. The traditional Sri Lankan food was heavenly. And they were'nt stingy with the portions. lots of meat, the parathas were lovely, and samosas were great, and all very reasonably priced. Would recommend any to try it out, really good food!

Lovely tasty food, quite hot and with depths of spice (not just chili). The restaurant offers a full menu of meat, fish and veggie mains (at say £12 ish each) and each dish can alternatively be served as part of a thali (at say £4 per dish), so even if there are just two of you it's possible to get a lovely variety of dishes.I think the neam of teh restaurant doesn't do it justice and fails to tell you its distinguishing feature - that it's Sri Lankan!

Quick delivery, great food. Jaffna Coconut Lamb - spicy curry with a thick gravy, Beef Kottu Rotti (their house special (bread, onion, leek, chilli, curry leaves, egg and choice of meat), home-made nann bread and the famous coconut cream spinach. Very happy and would order again, order direct from their website for the best prices and cut out Just Eat etc which charge more.

A family run business trying their hardest to please customers on all fronts by serving great food ,being attentive and demonstrating cleanliness!Very good sized food portions and at very low prices.The thali dishes are the ones to go for and you can do a great tapas type share of loads of dishes.For me the food could have been spicier but that is my peculiar taste!Could not wish for more in an Asian restaurant....and it is licences but also byo.That saves a few bucks!

Went here on a Friday night with my Girlfriend, and found the place surprisingly quiet, apart from the group of rowdy lads downstairs. (They were fine, just a little noisey, but didn't affect us). It is BYOB so that's a tick to begin with. The waitress was very friendly and kept my GF amused as I was running a little late. We went for the Thalis, and shared 6 between the 2 of us. Had a lovely side dish also, which I believe was called Kothu Paratha, and can highly recommend. Its under breads, but only contains little bits of bread, mixed with vegetables etc. The different Thalis were all very flavoursome and stuffed with large pieces of meat. The whole meal came to around £30 including tip which was great.Will definitely be heading back here.

Great value as you can take your own alcohol and with a taste card it's buy1 get 1 free on dishes. Great variety (and varying degrees of spiciness!) of dishes and you choose a selection to share. The devilled lamb starter was outstanding.Quite quiet as it perhaps doesn't get the footfall of the places closer to centre of Balham, but definitely worth a visit and we will be returning.

My first visit to "Ale & Spice" and I was very warm,y welcomed. Both my friend and I enjoyed our meal and all the dishes were very tasty, though the fish dish we ordered was a "dry" dish, which we hadn't realised. We had opted for talis, so we're able to taste a good variety of the items on the menu. There is a wine and ale list, but it is also possible to BYOB, which we had done, as we were not aware there was a wine list . No corkage is charged for bringing your own drinks, which is admirable, so the overall costs are low and this was reflected in it being a rather busy evening in there, despite the rain. I would go back, as I would love to try some of the other items on offer.....

This is a wonderful restaurant with a wide range of delicious dishes and welcoming and friendly staff. Have been here about five times now and it just gets better and better. It is excellent value for money as well.

Ale and spice hosted a private birthday celebration for 30 guests. Very good service. Friendly staff and yummy food. Would definitely recommend.

This spot has changed hands a number of times in last few years. Ale & Spice are the latest ones to give it a go and I after this evening's meal I hope they succeed.Like Thali Pickles near the station, this restaurant specialises in thalis, and the items on the menu can either be ordered as part of a thali or as a full meal. I had the meat thali for one and it was great. Each of the dishes was noticeably different and tasty. A meal for two incl drinks and poppadoms came to £33- and I came away stuffed. Bit of a bargain as far as Balham is concerned.Those who have been in Balham for a couple of years might know this team as the people who ran the Hop and Spice restaurant (where Franco Manca in now).

I previously reviewed this place and said how good it was, which was a complete surprise to me at the time. I have now been four times, and have yet to be let down.On one occasion, i went as a group of eight. At this point i had been twice, so i was really hoping it wouldn't let me down, as i had raved about it to the group we were going with. Thankfully, there were no problems. One of the members of the party is vegetarian, and found that there was plenty to suit her on the menu, everyone ordered the 'advised' 5 Thali between two, with a couple of other things, and were full.The meal came in at around £100 for the eight of us, which doesn't include drink. We brought our own, and there is no corkage.I really can't praise this place highly enough. As long as the food remains as good as it has been, and i can get a table without having to book ahead, i will keep on going.If I was really stretched for a negative, our meal took a while to come out, but the waiter who brought it out apologised profusely (without me saying a word to him).

Have been eating at Ale &Spice since they opened a few years back. Food is simple and tasty. Very good choice. Quality is great and staff very friendly. Very good value for money. Open to parties and very flexible. Def one of the little gems of Balham. Went back with my parents (used to Italian food) and they loved it as fresh and tasty.

I recently held a birthday meal at Ale & Spice for myself and 12 other people and they all came away praising the venue and food. The staff were marvellous considering there was another large party there that weekend evening. Allowing groups to bring their own drinks must mean they forfeit a fair chunk of profit but it is brilliant for keeping the bill reasonable. We all enjoyed the food, especially the devilled chicken, and I would recommend this Sri Lankan hotspot to anyone wanting something a bit different.

Second takeaway from Ale & Spice. First one a few months ago was great. This one arrived on time but the food was only just about warm - despite living only being a few roads away from the restaurant. The naan was stone cold so we reheated everything. The chicken dishes were nicely flavoured and the meat was tender, but just not to the standard of our last lovely meal. Disappointed, probably won't risk ordering again.

Went here for dinner with two friends as we live very close by and had always wanted to go. We each had 3 thali dishes and there was enough for everyone try a bit of each dish. BYOB made the meal very affordable. Will definitely be going back to try more of the delicious dishes. You have to try the coconut spinach, it was delicious!

After seeing this place recommended in Time Out magazine, I thought it was worth a try. I read the reviews on here and wasn't sure. Although a lot of Excellent, three are by the same person and there aren't that many recently. Anyway, I thought I would go along, and I am glad I did.I turned up at 7.45 without a reservation, and there was one other couple in the restaurant. I was quite surprised to see three tables were reserved. Within 30 minutes, the restaurant was full.We were greeted by a friendly waiter who guided us to a table and gave us our menus, within minutes, he returned with complimentary poppadoms. He happily opened our wine and left us to it.We ordered a sharing starter, and five Thali to share for main course, along with rice and naan..The starter was fine, it was four prawns, two samosas, two spring rolls, and three sauces. I didn't think the sauces matched what was on the plate, but were nice enough. The three items for starter were nice, but nothing special.The main course arrived, and looked small - I was a little concerned if it would be enough for two. The Chilli Chicken was fantastic, and on reflection I would order this as a main meal in the future. The Lamb Manka was great, I could have eaten twice as much. The Beef Ale and Spice was also very good. The Devllish Pulled Pork, tasted nice, but there wasn't that much pork in there which was disappointing. The squid tasted nice, but was quite chewy.It ended up that five Thali was more than enough and in hindsight, could have done without the starter.One negative from the service was we weren't offered a dessert menu (albeit, we probably wouldn't have had one anyway). On the flip side, they did bring us water without asking which was nice.A starter for two, five Thali, rice, and naan bread came to £33 - an absolute steal. Myself and my girlfriend left very satisfied with our evening. The best part - no corkage on the BYOB.I would easily go here again.

Went here with some friends. It was very quiet at first. Good because we managed to get a table last minute! But it did mean the atmosphere wasn't quite as bustleing as you might want. The food was very yummy though. You can either by the beer served here or you can bring your own drink. A great bonus! Really nice for a mid week quietish meal to get stuck into.

Um, I'm not really sure where to go with this. There was nothing actually wrong with the food and it's not really a criticism, but it all tasted really 'home-made', like something I could have made at home. Not at all spicy compared with most Sri Lankan food I've eaten and generally not very 'wow', but then again if you want to pretend you cooked it yourself, this is the place!

I love the food here, as we used to really enjoy going to Hop and Spice (the chef moved here when Hop and Spice closed.)The thali menu is great because you can try lots of different small dishes. I'm vegetarian and love the paneer, aubergine, potato etc dishes and my husband equally enjoys the meat and fish ones. The waitress is very friendly, it is all reasonably priced and you can bring a bottle of whatever you fancy to drink with no corkage. Smallish and basic restaurant but all very clean and I always enjoy it there.

I have eaten in Ale & Spice a few times. It's always been excellent. Last Saturday was the first time I ordered a take away food. I was having 16 people round to celebrate my birthday and I couldn't face cooking for that number. Ale & Spice, thankfully came to the rescue and delivered an enormous amount of excellent food. All my guests commented on how good it was. I used their menu for six x three and there was a tremendous range of food at an exraordinarily competetive price.When I went to pay the bill the next day I saw their excellent value buffet which included all the stuff I had ordered. This is available on Friday to Sunday from 12 noon for the incredible price of £6.99(£7.99 on Sunday). I thoroughly recommend it.

It was bhw.. The Sunday... It was the evening and so quiet, only us in there, we had the buffet, totally worth the value and no pressure to leave, it's BYOB with no corkage which makes it even better, you could sit there all evening with good friends, drink and food. excellent ☺

Disappointing. Bread missing from order, noticed before driver left and informed him, but nothing done. Ordered chicken dish and was sent a random pork one, small portions as well. Never again, avoid.

This is a successor to the once successful Hop and Spice. Ale and spice is quite poor in quality and there does not seem to be an emphasis on tasty, well cooked food anymore. Not sure if the owner is actually checking on the quality at all. Often empty of an evening. Nice people serving though!

I've taken my husband and various friends here probably 5-6 times, and had quite a few takeaways over the past few months. The quality of the food is always high; you can taste each of the individual spice flavours in their beautifully crafted dishes. Having said that, the cook is a bit conservative with the hot spices so go for more rather than less. The table staff sometime seem a bit inexperienced but make up for it by their charm and friendliness. And their BYOB policy, plus their incredibly low prices, make it one of my favourite local restaurants.

This is probably the nearest restaurant to my home, and a really good one it is too! a big attraction is the BYOB policy (no corkage), which means you can have a nice meal and good drink for relatively cheap.I have been there twice, and as previous posters have mentioned, it is sadly always rather empty which seems to be an injustice given the delights on offer. they specialise in Thali dishes, although I just tend to order a main which is always excellent. they say their food is quite mild so if you like it spicy you need to ask as they will happily do it.Service is very friendly and laid back. one minor criticism is some of the dishes that come out are rather small (ive never left feeling stuffed) but they are still worth the money.give it a go, these guys deserve it!

I don't normally write reviews, but I feel a bit sorry, as we seemed to be the only customers they had all night and they were so nice!The staff were really lovely and helpful and brought us a complementary cocktail and popadum when we sat down.I had the devilled chicken as a starter, which was amazing. Really nicely spiced and quite different to anything I'd had in other Asian restaurants.We had six thali dishes between us for main course, with a mixture of vegetables, meat and prawns. They were all very good, although I would have liked slightly more, especially the vegetable dishes, which were just a few pieces of each.There was actually a two for one deal on mains that didn't apply to what we ordered, which we knew about upfront, but when the bill came they had given us a discount anyway!Overall, it was very reasonably priced, especially as it's bring your own wine, with no corkage at all!I'll definitely be using them for take away in future, but I really hope they can manage to fill the restaurant, so there's a bit more atmosphere...

Had an amazing night at Ale &Spice! I requested Ale and Spice for a party booking for 20 people, for a surprise birthday party for my husband and they organised everything from A to Z. Most of my friends and family never experienced Sri Lankan food, and they were mesmerized by the wonderful taste and the vast variety of food served. We selected various wines from their collection of wines, and all my friends and family, especially my husband, were all more than satisfied by the food, drink and the service. I would definitely recommend doing a party booking for any occasions at Ale & Spice, because it’s a reasonable price and they organise everything!

The great thing about Ale&Spice is it caters for all kinds of curry lovers. It's got hot, if that's your thing but if you favour the milder variety - my preference - they will lay that on for you too. The lads serving you couldn't be friendlier and you're not getting stung on the price. But the bottom line for any restaurant is: is the food good? Never fear; it's excellent. I'll be back.

The food really is excellent and although Balham has lots of restaurants none do food like Ale & Spice. The service is great, the staff are extremely friendly. As a Balham local we will be going regularly from now on.

4 of us visited on a Monday night. We were given a lovely complimentary cocktail and poppadoms on arrival. We chose a different starter each, all of which was lovely. We then shared every thali dish on the menu between us! Everything was delicious and the flavours were complex and delicious in each dish. We took our own wine and beer which the waiters happily served. The service was impeccable, just the right mix of attentive but being left alone. Can't recommend highly enough. They so do a take away service.

Ale & Spice is once of the more recent restaurant additions to Balham and sounds likes its settling in well and getting some fantastic reviews. I recently had a very nice meal there. Their cuisine tends not to be very spicy unless you request it to be. The staff are very nice and the venue is presented really very well with some nice art work and a large down stairs that I wouldn't have expected to see.

I've tried A&S many times for dinner - excellent food, lovely friendly staff. But today I tried their latest venture, full English breakfast at a knockdown price, £5.95. Actually I breakfasted at 1o'clock, so it's a brunch really. And I could have washed it all down with a fine white wine because they've now become a Bring Your Own Bottle venue. So next time I'll have my own champers with the scrambled eggs. I can thoroughly recommend A&S.

I feel so sad for Ale & Spice. It has great food and we love going there. It just always seems empty! When it was Hop & Spice it was always full. I really want this place to get back to the thriving Indian that it was! It really has great food!!It is EXCELLENT value too!

Great food and a very nice range of ales which really compliment the different flavours. The meat options are probably a little better than the vegetarian ones. Eating in the restaurant can be a little quite depending on what time you visit as it is on the edge of Balham but its well worth a visit.

We were really sad when Hop and Spice closed down and it was with great joy that we noticed Ale and Spice on Just Eat. The same chefs have taken a gamble and opened a restaurant up. They cook the best Sri-Lankan food around; it is reasonably priced, they have a nice selection of wines and beers and I would highly recommend you to make this your 'go-to' takeaway and restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

This was our seventh delivery last night since they opened and We've never had a bad meal like the other Asian restaurants.when we go for collection we always have excellent complementary cocktail and popadum.My girlfriend was a big fan of "Hop and Spice" where these guys end up a year and half ago.Top quality of food and service in Balham.Our favourite take away place in London.
