Al Forno - Wimbledon in Merton

Wonderful Sunday afternoon lunch. Visited with my wife, no reservation was made, but we were able to get a table. Went for the special, on the recommendation of the waiter and it was so good. I love the atmosphere, I just returned from 2 weeks from Greece and this was a perfect way to reminisce. In my opinion, a good selection of starters, pastas, meat, and fish courses. Just off Wimbledon Broadway (high street). Will definitely visit again.

Booked for a birthday dinner two months ahead. Orgnised everything with Arthur who introduced himself as a manager…. later on the day of the booking we were told he is just a head waiter! We wanted to have wine, water and antipasti ready on the table when we arrive. When we arrived the table was empty , nothing, they wanted to squeeze us in to serve more tables that evening . I said to another waiter who was very rude that we wanted one long table at the back , and they prepared a table where we couldn’t even move to see other person sitting next to you. After a long discussion they have changed it. We pre ordered antipasti with Arthur they had no idea which , he was off on that day and took the notes with him ! The same with wine choice! Terrible experience! If I could I would take the 17 guests somewhere else that evening but they all we traveling from abroad and were pretty tired. Anyway overall very bad experience, waiting staff rude and the whole experience awful. Never again!

Attended large family event, nothing what the host has arranged was prepared and on too of that the staff were arguing that because of manager attended the wedding they have not been told anything. Instead of straight away put wine on a table and antipasto and water they were basically arguing for 30 minutes. The layout was not what the host agreed, took 20 minutes to change layout. There was 17 of us and all pre booked we were told we don’t have to sit squeezed if we leave by 7pm. They have not delegated a waiter to the table, we needed to ask for water, clean cutlery etc. Really bad experience, do not recommend

I’ve been here multiple times with my partner and we are never disappointed. That being said, we always have the same food when we come - the fillet steak is the best I’ve ever had, even better than some of the highly rated top restaurants in London. Whenever we crave steak, we always come here now. I always wonder “is it really as good as I remember or will I be disappointed this time?” I never end up disappointed! Service is always great, too. And the atmosphere in the evenings never fails! We will definitely be back soon for another steak ;)

Astoundingly dreadful experience. The restaurant was only 1/4 full with plenty of empty tables. The table we were directed to was literally one foot away from the next table after one of the diners of that table moved their baby buggy to enable a clearance of two feet. Packed in like sardines when there was plenty of space elsewhere. When we said the location was just too cramped we were not offered an alternative, rather it was accept this or bugger off. This experience proves the staff have zero respect for their clientele, are lazy and have no motivation to make money for the restaurant owner . Never will we go back. The previous visit back in 2019 was dismal, food was mediocre (not authentic Italian) but thought we would see if things had improved however they have only become worse.

100% worth a visit. Authentic home-cooked Italian food, catering to any requests or preferences. Excellent value for money. Very attentive waiters.

We had a nice family meal at Al Fornos. I had the penne arribatta which was very good. My partner had the lasagne. There are limited options for dairy free / vegetarians. I had a side salad with mine which was good.

Very busy, so staff struggled to remember some of our order and it was fairly noisy. The food was very tasty though

Food was good, tasty but not amazing compared to some italian places. carbonara was very cheesy like mac n cheese and not much egg sauce. starters were good. pizza prices a bit steep. nice interior. price on the upper and too which didn’t match. overall not bad.

Unfortunately our experience fell well below expectations. We were seated in a draughty lean-to on a slope. The service was disappointingly poor and we even had to ask for someone to take our food orders as they were taking so long. Despite the generous portions the food was decidedly average. Soggy pizza and a somewhat bland seafood tagliatelle. It seems from reading other reviews that we caught them on a bad night.

Last minute decision with the family, very accommodating, really enjoyed the calm atmosphere food was lovely and fresh.

Quite a nice and popular Italian restaurant in the heart of Wimbledon. Delicious pastas, pizzas, and other Italian dishes. It's nicely decorated, which gives you a feeling of being on a holiday.

Not withstanding that the order was ice-cold, which ultimately is not the restaurants fault as it was a delivery.. the pizza was completely incorrect and missing its key ingredient… essentially becoming a very expensive, soggy cheese pizza. Very disappointing as this restaurant normally makes extremely tasty 🍕

After desert they asked us to leave, as they needed the table. There was lots of other free tables in the restaurant!! Really disappointed as we booked for 70th birthday celebration for 10 people. It ruined our evening ☹️

We had a lovely time, the food was delicious as usual. The only thing was that the service was slow, we only got our drinks after our mains arrived.

Service is patchy and slow but no wonder. I’d be un-motivated too to serve food like that. Pasta is mushy like baby food. If you call that an Italian restaurant in Italy there will be a protesting mob outside. But it’s always busy and I’m grumbling but it’s convenient to meet local friends so use it once in a while. Well that’s Wimbledon for you.

I booked a table for 3 friends and myself, prior to going to the theatre last night for my birthday. It was so close to hand and the restaurant was described as being cosy and friendly. We arrived just before 6pm, we had to queue and there was no one to greet us at the door. Eventually, we were shown to a side covering area, which was absolutely crammed full of diners. We could hardly get into our seats as it was so squashed. The tables and chairs were so stacked up against each other. The radiator was on full blast and one friend and I were really burning up. The noise was dreadful, with so many people talking really loudly. We had difficulty hearing what we were saying. It was a very unpleasant experience, probably the worst I've ever had. We were packed in like sardines! We were so glad to get out of the place and get some air. It took half the play at the theatre to recover from the awful experience.

Quick service. Pizza was lovely but the lasagna had too much cheese so I didn’t finish it. Would definitely come back for the pizza. Reasonably priced and lots of tables available.

Food was great but otherwise a pretty miserable experience. They couldn’t wait for us to vacate the table from the moment we arrived. And we booked.

Went on a Thursday night, managed to find possibly the only free table and that's without having booked. The service was great and in good time. Pizza's and sides all delicious. Not sure if 4 pizzas could fit on one table!! Good value for money in that respect. Definitely would go back

Wonderful traditional Italian food, although the tables are very close together. The lamb shank was perfectly cooked and I did ask for my meal to be made hotter and the vegetables to be cooked a bit more and they were extremely hard. Once this was done the meal was perfect, even the unusual gravy, as I had never had gravy quite like this before. I make my own gravy from scratch all the time as I was brought up on homemade gravy and meals which has made me a good cook.

Relaxed atmosphere and good food. What prawns!

Average. Hardly any seasoning. Prawns not cleaned (basics of serving prawns). Dirty glasses. Arabiata was bland.

My friend and I were having a meal before going to the theatre across the road. We ordered a medium pizza to share and had two glasses of wine each - the bill was a staggering £75. I will not be going there again and have just warned off a friend who was planning to go there tonight before the theatre. I will say the staff were friendly and attentive and the pizza was ok.

Known by all who live around Wimbledon for their really large sharing pizza's, recently ate there again and could not fault the quality of food and service. Would definitely recommend and return in the future!

Despite living in Wimbledon for many years I only ate here for the first time last night. Very good quality food and very large portions. Staff helpful with recommendations and very pleasant.

My daughter has suffered sickness and dizzyness after eating at Al Forno’s Wimbledon! She attended a friends party and ordered gluten free pasta. When she got home she complained of feeling dizzy, sick and suffering from stomach cramps! We contacted the manager at Al Forno’s who investigated and confirmed the pasta served was NOT gluten free pasta! We do not understand how in this day and age with so many intolerances and allergies this could have happened! The Waiter denied my daughter ordered the GF pasta which is completely untrue! My daughter said he didn’t even bother to check for any allergies and didn’t read back the order! The noise was loud in the restaurant, she believes he didn’t hear her ask for GF pasta! When complaining the manager did admit fault and apologise. The management at Al Forno’s Wimbledon seriously need to better train and educate their staff about allergies and the serious consequences! Otherwise one day something serious will happen!

I have been going here for nearly two decades and the food, service and friendliness of this place has never disappointed!!

Have been to this restaurant a few times before, it has a great atmosphere, the service is consistently good and there has never been a complaint from anyone in the large parties we sit in when it comes to the food. In the summer, the windows upstairs retract open which is a nice touch!

2.5 stars. Not sure why the place is popular in the area. Nothing too terrible but all dishes we tried were quite tasteless and price is as high as Central London restaurants. Must say their banoffee pie was AMAZING and I would add an one star just for that.

Ordered the pasta with ragusa, which is a rich stew. What came was bits of veal and mushroom with no sauce Awful. Veal with bacon and saute potatoes was tough. 2 meals not eaten would not go back

Loved the family atmosphere here with Christmas everywhere. We got honest and good advice from the waiter. It was really yummy food. Will go again soon!

Delicious food and excellent service....

This was a great place with nice buzzing atmosphere. The food was some of the best Italian I've seen in London and executed seafood dishes perfectly which is hard to do. Pizza was also lovely - thin base and cooked perfectly.

We booked a table for 4 adults and a toddler for a Christmas lunch. Table was booked weeks and weeks ago. We were told when we arrived that we couldn’t bring our foldable buggy to the table, and it was clear why - the tables were crammed in and there were too many of them. There was no high chair at the table, which was requested on the booking. We were crammed right in the corner, on a dirty sticky table, with our backs against a boiling radiator and no space to move as another family was crammed in behind us. Menus were thrown at us after about 15 minutes. At 30 minutes in, we still hadn’t been offered drinks so we left. The food looked good but the place was grubby and the service was non existent.

Unfortunately, the ordered dish wasn't content all ingredients which were in menu.

Worst meal ever, mixed bread basket a joke , five tiny slices of French bread! Pasta dish wasn’t even up to the standard of a cheap ready meal, unbelievably bad. Have visited in the past and it was ok , will not be going back . If I worked there I would be embarrassed to have to serve there food.

NOT VEGETARIAN FRIENDLY. While I was eating there I noticed they had dishes labelled as vegetarian in their menu despite having parmesan or gorgonzola in them. I wrote to the restaurant and they confirmed that they knew that the dishes were not vegetarian as parmesan and gorgonzola are not vegetarian cheeses. When I asked them to change the menu they stopped answering. They obviously do not respect vegetarian clients.

I go here most months to meet up with friends. The staff are always friendly and the food is always good. It's child friendly, dog friendly and they have a ramp for wheelchairs. I've always found something on the menu and have yet to be disappointed.

My friend has just visited this restaurant. They have advertised themselves as wheelchair friendly but she was in fact actively discriminated against several times by the venue. There was no accessible entrance (this is advertised on the website); she was then asked by staff if they could “take her chair” so it was out of the way and finally the disabled bathroom door did not lock properly. This is completely disgusting and I would strongly recommend the staff do some accessibility training asap!

Came back after years when I was resident in the area and sadly nothing like before. Had tonno e cipolla and quattro formaggi pizza, spaghetti bolognese and mixed salad. Pizza was average, spaghetti nothing like bolognese, salad with a supermarket dressing, when you could’ve put simply oil and vinegar. Waitress didn’t bother to ask size of drinks and got us pint of apple juice for a child and big bottle of water. You should keep the amazing italian flavour and style.

We order a delivery which had several incorrect elements. When it arrived we called the restaurant who refused to accept responsibility, trying to blame the delivery driver for mixing elements of two separate orders, even though it arrived in a single bag and the bag is packed in the restaurant.

After I gave them so many problems with the changes of my reservation. I had such a great experience even the administration manager came to check on us. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was as expected excellent. And the place was decorated beautifully for this festive season. I will definitely recommend Al Forno for business lunch/dinner but also for friends or family events.

It was a Saturday night and very busy but we were looked after very well and enjoyed the meal . The pizzas are amazing the best I've had. .

The aerobics has improved somewhat. The food is very average. I have to say that the servers and managers were very friendly and accommodating, but not attentive. Food was by undercooked for pizza. I am an ex chef, and the pizza came out too quick. Overall an improvement on my last visit 2 years ago which was awful, I will. Be going back to fry it again. I am partially deaf and blind, and I made a mistake entering my key pad numbers and had to reset. I have never felt more comfortable with the staff while sorting this out. Huge thank yous!!!!!!!

Terrible food carbonara was basically a microwave meal from sainsburys margarita pizza forgot to put the margarita on it and when I phoned up to say the food was cold the blunt response from the worker was call Uber how helpful

Food was ok. We were seated in the outside bit and they had tried to fit too many tables in a small place. This meant that there was very little space for the waiters to serve the food. Add in the customers passing past and it becomes very irritating. The plates were big and the tables small!

It was just wonderful...so sad I have to fly to get to experience it again...absolutely marvellous in every way ...

There is nothing Italian about this place. We were just there for a snack but it was truly awful. The bruschetta was chopped tomato and onion, unseasoned and heaving with onion. The olives are clearly the cheapest out of a jar. There was also some commotion amongst the staff about us only having drinks and a starter rather than a full meal. Initially the waiter said it was fine and sat us down, however all kinds of shouting then happened in the background saying this was not permitted. Avoid.

Only disappointment was carbonara had cream in it and not egg as advertised on menu. Besides that, all delicious!

Absolutely messed up a simple Deliveroo order. Didn't care at all of messing up people's dinner plans. Asked to see this with Deliveroo themselves whereas it was their mistakes for putting a totally wrong order in my bag.

I will definitely go again and again. We just moved and visited one time. Lazanya was delicious. Pizza ingredients were great but dough could be better. Calamari was Calamari. Aubergine bake starter was delicious. It was like main. I saw all their plates are more than enough. 👍 Next time I want to try pasta 😋 we are addicted to traditional Italian food.

I didn't enjoy any of this experience at all. The waitress was lovely and very attentive but my food was abysmal. Tasteless, overcooked, underseasoned. I'm not sure what their obsession is with sauté new potatoes but it needs to stop because they are minging and they seem to want to serve them with everything. We had a table by the door which had a constant stream of deliveroo or whoever the hell is ordering this from home. I fed back to my waitress and she was really understanding and resolved the problem, I then was getting stink eye from, I presume, the owner. I will never return to this place... Ever

Loved it. Pizza was great and it has a warm atmosphere. Will go back. Just make sure of the pizza sizes before you order. A medium was enough for two adults and a child.

An outstanding experience from start to finish. Fast and efficient service from polite, friendly and knowledgeable staff. The food and beverages were excellent. Highly recommended.

I had a delightful dining experience at Alforno restaurant. The Linguine allo Scoglio, a seafood pasta dish, was a true highlight, with a burst of flavors that left me craving for more. A very popular restaurant. If you want to eat here, book in advance. Lots of tables and super speedy, tasty, pizzas out of their pizza oven. Never been disappointed when eating here. So handy for the New Wimbledon Theatre. Very friendly and attentive staff.

Super 👌🏼 One of the best Italian Restaurant I Fresh food served in high quality, me personally love seafood and I ordered “Gamberoni Arrabbiata” which is prawns in chilli, garlic and tomato. Also I asked for mushroom risotto, wow it was so delicious 🤤. 💯% recommend to who loves Italian cuisine🙌

One thing I’m not a big fan on is tight spaces. As it was really busy Saturday night. We really had to squeeze past to get to anywhere. Food was amazing as is all Italian restaurants I’ve attended. Service was a bit slow which was understandable as there was only 3 people working upstairs catering to at least 50 people.

Absolutely perfect as always , the food was exceptional 👌 calamari that melts in your mouth , crab ravioli that was just so good and the most delicious banoffee pie

Lovely place to sit in..... As soon as we sat down we ordered the drinks which arrived promptly but had to call to order as we were forgotten. Menu is misleading. We ordered 2 cotoletta Di vitello Milanese with spaghetti.This supposed to be a pan fried veal cutlet with the bone. We got a piece of deep fried meat, doubtely veal about 120 GM each. Spaghetti were al dente. At 11 pm ca only two tables left, staff started to shift tables and raising chairs to get ready to mop the floor. Basically implying for us to go. We ordered the bill, left no tip and went. Restaurant is pretty, average London prices, shame they pretend to sell one thing and they serve another. These cheap tricks were common place in Italian restaurants in the 70s and owner,if he is Italian, ought to realise customers have evolved. Avoid!
