This is a fabulous Italian family run restaurant with the entire experience reflecting a true service aimed at giving the customer personal attention. We had a family meal here and it was interesting to see the number of children who were present and all being given real attention by the owner and young waitress. At one point, as the waitress placed a serrated knife down in the ‘correct’ position – she immediately ‘corrected herself’ moving it to the ‘wrong’ side to ensure my 3 year old granddaughter couldn’t touch it. A real attention to detail which typifies the experience you receive in this restaurant. We had a wide range from the menu and a variety of drinks, all of which were delicious, prepared perfectly and served in a friendly yet professional manner. The quality and range of food had us wondering how to choose one dish but needless to say, we did manage it. Without a doubt, one of the best Italian restaurants I have been in and fair to say, the service has survived Covid and it remains a first choice special place for us when we are visiting our family.

This was to us a local place and I have known the family for many years but said many years ago that it was not up to scratch. However last night my daughter booked it for pure location and convenience. She and I shared a half n half something I enjoy greatly. Boyfriend got stuck into his mussels n pasta finished in no time at all and said it was good. However my pasta was nice and tasty with prawns in tomato sauce but the pizza was grossly undercooked. It was taken back and exchanged but but again hardly touched. Nobody asked or said boo about it. Nic asked for a Birra Moretti was served a Peroni but he is too polite to say boo. Overall a dreadful experience as nice as the family can be I will never cross the doorstep again.

As mentioned in my last review, some places just pull you back again and again, Al Borgo being just one such place. Having had great experiences with this twice before, when visiting my now enlarged family and wishing to take them out, we naturally headed straight for Al Borgo one Sunday lunchtime. When we went in, it was almost as if we were old faces. Treated like friends and the service, food and atmosphere was every bit as good as before - yet we were the only customers. We had a range of pasta, soup and mussel starters, mains of Lasagne and other pasta dishes and deserts which included the most delicious Coppo Malibu and other delightful dishes. With drinks, the bill of less than £25pp was more than reasonable when you looked back on what we had but frankly, it wasn't the high quality food, great service but the feeling that we were part of the owners family which has won us over to this restaurant which will certainly see us visiting regularly in future visits.l

Booked this restaurant for our 5th Wedding Anniversary based on the fantastic reviews, big mistake. Ordered pasta with Salmon in cream sauce. Did not enjoy at all, dish was very salty. My husband ordered a Knickerbocker glory expecting a tall glass dish filled with ice cream and fruit and cream. What arrived was looked like a trifle. Lots of jelly with fruit, small amount of ice cream and cream. Very disappointed. Service was good. Would not recommend for romantic dinner as the place was very noisy.

My family and I ate at Al Borgo for our final night visiting Scotland, and it was an excellent decision. The environment was warm, clean, and welcoming. They have a large menu with seasonal specials at reasonable prices. The children's menu offered a variety of choices at a good value. They enjoyed going up to the gelato counter to select their dessert included in the children's meal price. My pasta dish, Penne Arabiatta, was fresh and full of flavor. Highly recommended for a family dinner out.

We called in for a mid-week evening meal. The menu gave plenty of choices and the special menu was good and made up of seasonal dishes. The scallops in cheese sauce were perfectly cooked. Pizza had thin crispy bases and lots of topping, gnocchi with pancetta and walnuts was perfect. There was a good atmosphere, and helpful staff which made for a very enjoyable evening and elevated, what was going yo be a routine evening meal into a very special night out. We really enjoyed our evening and would return there as often as possible.

My family are regulars at Al Borgo and are always given the highest level service. Their menu is huge and there is something to eat for everyone - always go for a steak personally and they are gorgeous. Very high quality food. Atmosphere is always lively however quiet enough that everyone round the table can talk away. Often sit through in the back room where there is large table as we have many family occasions there - always treated like royalty and service is very fast. 10/10 recommend - have been hundreds of times and never once been disappointed. .

Huge menu for such a small restaurant. Friendly staff but fawning over regulars so service not fast. Mum and I decided to go far half pizza half pasta but were told it was too difficult to split the lasagne. So ordered a pizza and a lasagne, when it came we asked for side plates and split ourselves (wasn't difficult). Pizza under done bit doughy, base still pure white, nice toppings though and plenty cheese. Lasagne nice enough. Wine was nice house Merlot. Desserts looked good but we decided against and had coffees instead latte and capacino both scalding hot. All in all ok but wouldn't want to go back. Maybe meat and chicken dishes are more the speciality.

Went to Al Borgo for Mother's Day on Sunday with my family. I was very impressed with the food and the female owner was really nice and chatty. I had a starter from the specials menu - jalapeño bites. Best starter I've ever had in a restaurant. I also split the bruschetta with my brother. The portion sizes were big and very reasonable. For my main I had spinach and ricotta tortellini and it was lovely. Unfortunately I couldn't finish it because I was full from my starter! Tried my mums pizza (the ortolana vegetarian) and it was also really good! The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is the service was a bit slow at times; especially for the drinks (tap water).Thank you to the female owner who was really friendly and kind. She made an effort to speak to all the customers and I find that very admirable. Thank you for a lovely evening.

We were over visiting our daughter in Edinburgh and we decided to go for a spot of dinner, in the first week of December with party nights in full swing we thought it would be a good idea to try something out of the city centre. Using trusty trip advisor for recommendations we spotted Al Borgo and gave them a phone, we were able to get there early otherwise they were fully booked for the evening (so booking is highly recommended)! States were: Caprese - lovely, Salad of Avocado, Mozzarella and Tomato - devine, garlic mushrooms - tasty and a chicken and pasta dish - wow!Mains were carbonara (amazing), salmon special (really nice), lasagne (really meaty and dense) and mushroom risotto (nice, not too rich). Dessert was ice cream (lovely) and cheesecake (tasty). The Barbera d'Asti was really nice too!Great service, really friendly and attentive, unhurried and, given how busy they were, spot on! Went for lunch with a friend, we were the only people in the restaurant so there was no atmosphere. The waitress was friendly and service efficient unsurprisingly as we were the only diners. My starter of tomato, mozzarella and avacado was tasty but huge, we certainly didn't need the rosemary and garlic bread we had with it. On previous visits this bread has been very good, thin and crispy and really tasting of rosemary. Unfortunately, it was not so good - thicker, not crispy and not much garlic or rosemary in evidence. I ordered a starter size portion of calamari fritte with a rocket and Parmesan salad to follow. The calamari were disappointing and the salad was dry. The balsamic glaze not as good as plain blasamic with oil. Again, the portions were enormous. My friend had gnocchi which he said were pretty tasteless. We used to visit here quite often and the kids always enjoyed the pizzas. Maybe this is a restaurant best suited to families.

So you look for an Italian restaurant with a difference and character for the purpose of celebrating a family anniversary. And hey presto, we latched onto this delightful “ristorante” in the suburbs of Edinburgh, Juniper Green to be exact.“Al Borgo” Ristorante is a family run business, established in 2003, ably figure-headed by Sylvia Carpico, the hostess, and her husband who is the wonder- maker in the kitchen. On arrival we were gently ushered to our table in a quiet room, and were greeted with “occasion adornments” on the wall and on the table, instantly making us feel special. We were then fêted with some wonderful menu choices. To begin with anything is possible, you can start with prawn dishes like the conventional “prawn cocktail” or something more sophisticated – “Gamberoni in Sfoglia” which is King Prawns in filo pastry with chilli dip. Absolutely delicious! Or something really special....”Cozze” which are Scottish Mussels cooked in white wine with either garlic or a touch of chilli. While our starters were being devoured, the wine list came round, and the consensus was for a “Zenato Valpolicella Ripassa”. This turned out to be the smoothest and most delicate of red wines and really is to be commended alongside fish dishes. This wine tastes of blackcurrants and blackberries with a slight hint of pepper and the finish that is smooth and viscous. A real delight! We do not have veal very often as a main course so it was nice to reacquaint with an Italian classic “Scaloppina Milanese” which is a escallop of veal cooked in breadcrumbs to perfection. The younger members of our group preferred dishes from the Pizza choices and one which stood out was “Pizza Marinara”, which was a pizza with mixed sea-food. By the end of all this we were beginning to feel famously lavished by our hostess and her staff. They made us feel so welcome and indulged us more than adequately.Rounding off of course, there was a long “carte” of desserts. One delight was “Coppa Amarena” – Vanilla Ice Cream (beautifully homemade) and Amarena Cherries in syrup and cream, a great way to round off a superb meal.We will certainly be back and wish the Carpicos well!

She is clearly passionate about the business and this shines through. This is somewhere we would definitely return to and would have no hesitation in recommending to anyone looking for pleasant surroundings, excellent food and fabulous service.

We had pizza at Al Borgo which was really good. It's not a wood-fired oven but it got really close to what pizza tastes like in italy. We enjoyed it, the staff was also very friendly. Recommended!

Visited this lovely restaurant on several occasions I have never been disappointed the food has always been excellent. Downside is it's a little bit pricey other than this it's worth a visit if you are in the area

This IS a family ran establishment and half of the customers seem very well know and part of the extended family, they really do make you feel welcome and relaxed the food quality is great and they offer alternatives from the heart when something is sold out. So much so Pasta night 1, came back for pizza then again for the Veal all excellent, they even make their own Ice Cream and Panacotta. Well Done and thank you all!

I visited la borgo when the restaurant hosted a fund raising evening for RDA Ravelrig. The food was lovely - my risotto was delicious. The staff were friendly, welcoming and attentive. What more could one ask? Well, the owners had organised an evening as a fund raising event for this local charity. How generous and thoughtful. We had a great time and will be back.

What a great find. We visited with family and were seated by the front of house owner. We felt welcome and relaxed immediately. A mixture of starters and various pizzas and pastas for mains, which were all excellent. The service was superb and very friendly, it made you feel like regulars! Really reasonably priced also. Wish we had somewhere like this in Berkhamsted.

Another great evening at Al Borgo! Four of us ate there on Saturday night and not one of us was disappointed! I had the black ink spaghetti with seafood. It was gorgeous! Great fast and efficient service. Well done, Sylvia!

This was at least the second time I've eaten here but the first time for probably ten years. I have to say it was a great experience and better than I remember. I would have given it a five if the portions had been a bit larger. The food was very tasty indeed and the menu was extensive although perhaps a little limited for vegetarians. I would eat here again.

I have visited Al Borgo many times over the past 10 years with each time being superb. Recently my daughter had her 6th birthday party in the back function room (her choice, as it's her favourite restaurant in Edinburgh) It was fantastic the kids get to make their own pizzas with a choice of toppings, then some of the delicious home made ice cream is served with their choice of sweet toppings. Kids all had a ball with the birthday girl saying it was "awesome". Well done to Claudia and the team at Al Borgo. We will be back again soon.

I visited Al Borgo with a few work colleagues and we had the best dinner. The starter specials for the night were all fantastic as well as the main courses. We had a mixture of everything on the table and everything was met with rave reviews. The best part was the home-made ice cream. Claudia was great about letting us substitute ice cream flavours in sundaes and make topping changes. All in all a great night!

Booked a table for Sunday evening after a friend recommended we try this place. Went with my husband, father in law, my 7 year old daughter and 15 month old baby son. We had a fantastic meal! Food was flippin' delicious! Service was outstanding. Extremely friendly and very child friendly. Chef prepared our baby's meal first so that he was able to start eating soon after arrival. This made him and us happy! :-) Kids menu is fab! Great selection! Spotlessly clean restaurant, toilets and baby changing facilities are excellent. Our daughter has decided that she wants to return for her birthday lunch at the end of April! Many many thanks to all staff and owners at Al Borgo. X

Although I've borrowed the title from a classic 'Fawlty Towers' episode, any comparison with Al Borgo stops there! Silvia, Elio and Claudia really excelled themselves with their special occasion, '5-Course Wine Dinner' last Wednesday (19 March). We're local regulars and have never been disappointed but this was something else! We were welcomed into the Function Room with a glass of Prosecco, accompanied by home-made bread, olives and balsamic vinegar. The other courses then followed the traditional Italian pattern with Mozzarella & Speck ham, Home-made Pasta, Sea Bream on Roasted Vegetables and Lamb Chops, Italian Style with Rosemary Potatoes, finishing with their home-made (naturally!) Cassatta Siciliana. Each course was accompanied by its own Italian wine, specially selected (and introduced) by Al Borgo's very knowledgable Wine Supplier; a Rose from the North-East, a Sicilian Red, a Tuscan White, a Puglian Read and, to finish, a sweet moscato d'Asti from Piedmonte, all perfectly complementing their dish. It came as no surprise to discover that the Event had been staged to celebrate Al Borgo's award of a Certificate of Excellence in Italian Cuisine. This was a special event with a party atmosphere, but the place is a 'Suburban Gem' with every customer treated like a family friend. Even the 'ordinary' menu, including Pizza n' Pasta standards, is well worth the journey out from town.

Enjoyed a lovely birthday meal here due to Claudia's help. She helped us plan a menu to suit everyone's taste. We all enjoyed the prosecco on arrival, then we had a selection of antipasti which consisted of Italian meats, melon with Parma ham, breads, cheeses, olives and salad. The main courses were all lovely. Then we had cake with gorgeous ice cream all washed down with wine then teas and coffees. We would certainly have another birthday bash in al borgo, the staff are very helpful and nothing is too much bother.

We were all delighted with our food, some had steak some had pizza some had pasta and we were all very pleased. You may have to book as they can be very busy.

Visited this little Italian restaurant by accident when the place we had intended to visit didn't serve food... A common occurrence on a Monday around Edinburgh it seems.... And Al Borgo doesn't usually either, only it was the day before New Year's Eve, so they had opened some extra days over Christmas and New Year.Well, what a find! The menu was varied, the prices very reasonable and the food cooked beautifully. The staff were very friendly (as were the other customers) and if we'd had room for a dessert, they looked amazing. We will definitely return next time we're around Edinburgh.

More than 5 stars!! Excellent service and the food is incredible. Must try more of the menu because everything is top tier. The perfect place for a big group, casual vibe, drinks, food, cocktails 👌 must try the amazing karaage chicken and bramble cocktails, and some of the best pizza in Edinburgh!

Tiny place, excellent food, great service, good value, what more could you want? I had Monkfish in Prosecco Batter, the batter was the lightest I'd ever had, delicious. I'm recently back from Sicily so couldn't resist the Linguine Alla Puttanesca which was perfect too, much better actually than a similar dish in Sicily.

Fantastic find - so welcoming to my young children - excellent waiter and delicious food at a great price. The gnocchi was particularly good and the children’s menu is great value.
