Aj's coffee house in Cardiff

Sunday morning breakfast joy! Interesting and varied menu, high quality and locally sourced ingredients cooked with care and skill. 4 adults enjoyed freshly made poached eggs and avacado on granary toast, fish finger sandwiches, fruit smoothies, delicious freshly baked pumpkin and cinnamon muffins. Friendly efficient service. Lovely.

The food is made from scratch and fresh to order, so the wait is a little longer but that’s to be expected. Friendly front of house great value for money too. Coffee is well made and strong!

The food in the place is only ok (apart from the awful, packet frozen curly fries) Came in here with colleagues one lunch break. There were 4 in front waiting the que to order so we waited for them to order and placed an order for 3 breakfasts. Immediately after us, there was a table of 12 people who qued (BEHIND us to order). I asked how long the wait would be and the member if staff said 15 mins so we carried on with the order. After waiting for OVER AN HOUR for our food to arrive (and the table of 12 who came in after us getting their meal before us and leaving ). I asked why the long wait and why did he promise 15 mins. He replied no I said it will be 15 mins before we start cooking and there will be a delay. I think this place needs to be more up front to office workers about the time they have to wait for their food. If he said it will be 15 mins before we start cooking and another 1hr 10 mins before you get your food (being honest) then we would have gone elsewhere. We did get an apology and some awful curly fries to make up for this but they were not needed and left and all we wanted was to dealt with before the table of 12 who were behind us in the que. Simple etiquette really! This place made us very late for a meeting we had and won't be ever back. A bit of honesty wouldn't go a miss rather than white washing us with the 15 mins before we start cooking lies. We won't be back. Lost customers just because you weren't up front about the wait time!

I highly recommend this cafe. The food is SO fresh and comes out piping hot. Very generous portions and excellent value for money. Great range on the menu, can’t wait to come back with family and friends!

This quirky coffee house was not what we were expecting but we are glad we came! It’s quite a trek out of the city centre, but there are quite a few hotels dotted close by. We came at about 12:15 for brunch and it was quiet. there was a good breakfast and light lunch menu, great for smaller appetites. We both had pancakes which were homemade; you pay per pancake which was brilliant as most places just create a standard stack. We were pleasantly full afterwards. Never judge a cafe by its exterior; it looks tiny from the street but has multiple tables inside and about 6 in a heated and covered garden. The only downside to the garden area was that some customers were smoking under the cover which didn’t allow for proper ventilation of the smoke so the smell did linger for quite sometime; I appreciate we could’ve gone and sat inside but at the moment we much prefer sitting outside because of the current Covid circumstance so I don’t mean to moan! Very much recommend and well worth the walk.

In these strange times that we are in, it's nice that on your way to a meeting that you chance upon a great place like AJ's for a stunning breakfast and coffee. Waitress was just so nice and kind and looked after me and my wife. We had the full breakfast, Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, Hash browns, Toast and beans and a latte and I must say it was so good, cooked well and very tasty. We will be back, keep at it!!! Thanks!

Had a lovely club sandwich and some of the best chips I’ve ever tasted. Great coffee too, wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Awesome!

Lovely quality food served with a smile from the younger members of staff but the senior staff was not friendly or welcoming. Tasty BLT and mushrooms on toast. Would come back if the atmosphere improved.

Ah I wouldn't even bother, the lady was so rude on the phone, when I went to add on to my order she ended the call, we was a few minuties late picking the food up and all we had was " thought you wasn't going to pick it up" wiith the most nastiest attitude !! ooh and to top it off the food was vile!! very cold, may have been a little late but that still doesn't mean we should of been given cold food !! will not be returning and I highly recommend you go else where for a takeaway!!

Came here for breakfast very nice to have a chilled morning together. Not many people here so atmosphere was low. Staff are kind. Would recommend and come again.

Searched Trip adviser for coffee shop for breakfast. This establishment came up with a good rating. We were the first customers of the day, so plenty of seating!! - there is actually a lot of seating for customers. We were served very quickly - food was freshly cooked. I had a BLT which was tasty. Hubby had pancakes with bacon & egg. The greedy git upgraded to 3 of each - how wrong he was - they arrived and were huge and extremely filling - he couldn’t finish his food. Loved the sign for the “gender neutral” toilet! Would definitely recommend & would return.

Visited here with my business partner to negotiate business the staff were extremely rude and and my eggs were to runny. I would have thought they would be a little more polite seing that when we arrived we were the only business they had. Very disappointing will not be returning I look forward to your reply

I've been eating here all week. Great food, nice service. A little slow, but only because they cook everything fresh and the wait is absolutely worth it. Highly recommended.

Fui hoy con mi familia, mis hijos tenían panqueques americanos, tuve huevos escalfados, otros medio desayuno y ¡GUAU! ! ! Todo recién hecho, nada demasiado, ambiente relajado, precios razonables, buenas raciones, podría seguir. Me hubiera tomado fotos pero comí mi comida demasiado rápido

Fui allí el lunes, justo antes del cierre, amablemente la señora detrás de la barra felizmente me sirvió a pesar de que estaban a punto de cerrar, conseguí ensalada de AJ y café con hielo, ensalada era increíble refrescante y vino con pan y ensalada con mantequilla, sabroso. Hielo tarde se fue mucho antes de que llegara la comida, ¡pero no lo tomes como algo malo! ¡Fue una locura! Buena comida, personal educado. Definitivamente puedo recomendar! ! Regresaré chicos; )

Cosy café serving tasty home cooked food. Perfect place to escape for a relaxing lunch :) They serve a selection of yummy food - sandwiches, soup, salads, breakfasts, club sandwiches, chilli con carne, curly fries....

One of the many cafes/restaurants local to my work, but the only one I regulalrly visit. Food is also freshly done to order . Nice ( sometimes too nice) portion size . Good value for money.

I came to AJ's to meet someone for a coffee and was so Impressed,I stayed for breakfast. A very enjoyable experience. Well cooked. Well presented. A feast in itself. Pleasant atmosphere. Very popular. Will come again

Had a lovely breakfast here this morning while staying in cardiff. Staff were all very friendly, coffee was excellent and the breakfast very good. Would come again.

I used to come here everyday for lunch with my friends as it was right by our college. All of the food is amazing, such a wide variety of foods. Some of my favourites were the cheese toasties, curly fries and the chocolate tiffins. I had breakfast here too, the toast is so thick with lovely jam and butter. The staff are very friendly, they always knew my order as I had the same every day! Always clean in there and the decor is very nice and interesting.

We lived in Cardiff for a few years and Aj's was a regular Saturday fixture for brunch after a long run.

I used to love this place but the last 6 months it's become terrible. I kept giving it a chance until today. Never again.

Visited "Aj's Coffee House" this morning (Wednesday 13th July) after spotting it just a few doors I Giardini di Sorrento (which itself replaced one of the best coffee shops in Cardiff – “A shag in the Dark”) when I visited last Friday (see Giardini di Sorrento review). It is likewise very near my office and I noticed that it had very good reviews here on TripAdvisor and it was this week recommended by a friend.

Really good selection and good quality at a bargain price with very decent sized portions. Will be going back.........

Went in to the newly refurbished aj's after a couple of years away and was blown away...it's now bright clean and airy inside, there's interesting stuff to read, from New Scientist to Glamour, staff cannot be more helpful, coffee has really improved and the food!

Excellent cafe for lunch. Visited with 4 colleagues at a very busy lunchtime. Impressive menu seving interesting options like falafels and American pancakes not the dreary normal burgers etc. We all ordered different meals and were served quickly and efficiently. I had the quesedillas with salad which were fresh and tasty. Others had curly fries which I also sampled- crisp and moreish. Very generous chilli and fries portions and at an average of £5 - very good value. A bit cramped when busy so go early for lunch. Friendly staff too. Recommended.

Great place to go and start your day right. The breakfast is the best in town! Everything cooked perfectly, massive portions and all for a really good price. All the ingredients to getting rid of your hangover quickly!

Was hanging around city road and thought we would pop in for a light bite. . Mohosive portions of tasty nosh at bargin prices...warm...clean...perfect pick me up point for all 3 of us...could have had a little snooze too as we were full warm and comfy x

As a university student based in the Queens buildings, AJ's is only a stones throw away. The decor is stylish and cosy and the food is fantastic. My favourite is the club sandwich which comes with a huge amount of curly fries and comes at a reasonable price. You order your food, plonk yourself down on a sofa and the staff leave you be. The music is good and not intrusive. It is always busy but not packed. Easily my favourite place to eat in this area.

new to Cardiff from London, Post graduate, desperate for a meal after trauma of moving into student house etc...stumbled across this place after bypassing the massive Wehterspoons soulless barn of a place, past the neighbouring rival which was seriously overpriced for mediocre pastries, and gave this place a try. what a find! Great service witha smile, tasty, freshly cooked piping hot food (thankfully, not the salad :) ) and Ferari's coffee! I also had a large piece of an amazing (and made in-house) coffee and walnut cake, which nearly made me cry and was so inexpensive! Great vibe, eclectic music, comfortable and convivial surroundings, I have been back there several times since! And have now experienced the way of the curly fry...'mazin'....I miss it even thinking about it...Needs to be open later though....and they serve booze! which we never realised until after a few visits! Chillin' in the back garden area with a beer, nibbles or glass of something yummy...Happy days.

This coffee shop gets great reviews, but I honestly don't know why. There's no table service, so you have to queue at the counter. The service is really slow. There are too many staff behind the counter, doing heaven only knows...not serving or cooking by the look of things. The menu is very average. Nothing much to attract a breakfast visit. I ordered egg, beans, hashbrown and toast. I say hashbrown because I got ONE! Seriously! The single egg was lukewarm and the beans were cooler. Very unappetizing especially for such high prices. Management should splash out on at least 2 eggs per serving and possibly 3 or 4 hashbrowns. I was actually regretful that we didn't just go and get breakfast at the Wetherspoons down the road, because at least we'd get a decent plateful for a fair price, and that's saying something because I loathe Wetherspoons food.

Very disappointed. I came here with my friends as I we were recommended to try it as it was supposed to be very nice. However my chicken baguette came out and I actually thought my chicken was plastic, it was a horrible pure white colour and very gooey, they were very stingy with the lettuce and it was a horrible sauce! I asked if I could swap it and the reply was 'if everyone asked to swap their meals we will be out of business' (not very polite at all. So I didn't even eat it not even getting a refund or anything. My friend had Soup which was cold to warm and there was hair on her garlic bread. As we sat down somebody smashed a pepper jar. I was so excited to try it out but will definately not be returning and certainly not recommending to anybody

Myself and my work colleagues come here a lot for lunch during the week - we've had to start reserving Fridays only for an AJ's as we spend most of our pay packet here and we're getting pretty porky!

This is a great, chilled place to eat. Food is fab, fresh, good quality ingredients & they will accommodate any orders you want. Would recommend & will return (again)

A nice breakfast with good coffee and great hot chocolate. It was a bit pricey, but there's a nice vibe with comfy couches, good music and electronic fireplace. Definately an upgrade from those chains.

Great food, very reasonable price and cooled to order. Not even the waves of unwashed students can tarnish this little gem on City Road

Aj's is hidden away amongst the middle at the top of City Rd and is the kind of place you wouldn't imagine visiting just by driving past, you would have to be walking past to really notice it which is why it's so under-rated. But for lunch it's a very nice place to eat and just chill with friends, decent prices in comparison with the other places to eat at City Rd and a very wide selection of things to eat. Highly recommend it for lunch!

Visited before and the enthusiastic staff and good coffee were excellent , so this time thought we would try the breakfast , always a good yardstick but sadly it along with my partners Panini was disappointing. having ordered brown toast it came with white and an apology and a promise that the brown toast would be moments .. not the case .. it arrived after what could be eaten of the meal , OK an influx of customers had occurred so you could see what had happened but it just added to the disappointment as the meal was effectively tasteless, nondescript bacon, nameless baked beans, hard fried bread .. or was it a rosti? hard to tell and the saddest pair of sausages that had graced a plate in a long time, Oh they looked grand, shimmeringly brown, plump and glistening but if you are serving sausages, at least select a quality product that has some flavour, these appeared to be bulk catering products of unknown lineage.

Never had a bad breakfast here. Always a winner whatever you choose! Perfect place to meet up with friends for a lazy breakfast

Loved the full English and especially the couches in the window were you can see the hustle and bustle of a great city while enjoying a delicious meal

AJ's is a nice place to eat - very modern and clean - the service is friendly and efficient and plenty of breakfast choices - I had a full breakfast and tea - the food arrived piping hot and well presented and this really would have been a five star rating but for one thing - the poor quality of sausages - cooked well but tasted cheap and bland and thats a pity. Two of my colleagues made the same assessment so its not just me. The tea was the teabag in a mug you get at Costa's but I like a pot of tea and no messing about with floating tea bags. Sort the sausages and I will be a regular!

AJ's - One of my favourite cafe's in Cardiff!

Been using AJs for years always amzing food and always service with a smile from Tony. Today tried the cooked breakfast for a change and it was the best breakfast ever! Everything cooked fresh with such tasty sausage, quality bacon, local free range farm eggs, mushrooms cooked to perfection, tomatoes, baked beans, toast and I even liked the hash browns that I'm not a fan of. Such a lush breakfast and great value as well.

I used to go to Ajs regularly while studying at the college across the road.The staff are genuinly nice (not forced) and the atmosphere even when busy is fantastic.Theres a good choice of indoor and outdoor seating with sofas and tub chairs aswel as stools and a breakfast bench.The coffee is excellent and they have a wonderful menu with lots of american diner style things on it such as curly fries that comes in a mini bucket and delicious pancakes.It isn't cheap but it is value for money, the reason it's survived with so much competition is because of its excellent food,loveable staff and buzzing atmosphere.5 out of 5!

Feeling a bit down my sister and I went for a walk along Newport road, Cardiff and we stumbled upon an all-day breakfast fit for a queen or a king and coffee to die for, not to mention the staff who had us in fits after being in there for 5 mins.

AJS is a great place to for just a coffee or a sample of their great food. They do a great all-day full-English breakfast but their Club Sandwich is just amazing.
