The savoury starters were very disappointing. The piece of cold duck was very chewy. There was no cheese in the cheese profitable. The sandwiches were the best part of afternoon tea. The scones were lovely. The cakes were a bit disappointing. My mum said my homemade Victoria sponge was better. The service was appalling. We were ignored. We had the champagne afternoon tea booked and we had been sitting for over 25 minutes and I had to find the waiter to ask for the champagne. We had to go and ask for more tea so again had to go looking for a waiter. Not impressed by the poor service. Not once did they did check on us to see if everything was ok. They did not offer a selection of teas just offered tea or coffee. This was a present but I wouldn’t choose to come back. This is the worst service we’ve ever had.

Poor quality ingredients - margarine on the sandwiches and perhaps the toughest portion of turkey I’ve ever been served. Wedge of pannetone felt lazy and disappointing. Is there a pastry chef?

We sat together in the library, enjoying our luxurious tea, as if we were the family in residence. In soft comfortable chairs and sofa, we ate delicate sandwiches, the most delicious scones and light numerous cakes and nibbles. The staff were friendly but left us to enjoy our repast without interference or any sense that there was any rush. The ambience was country living without any hassle but with a talented chef hidden the background. It was relaxing and luxurious, just the way afternoon tea should be.

A very delicious but bizarre experience. We had gone for a relatively late afternoon tea at around 4, and the lady serving us was fantastic, quick and attentive. The food was really tasty, you’re given a lot of both bites and tea/coffee. However, at 5pm, we were just finishing up, and the only people left in the conservatory. And we then proceeded to wait... and wait.. and wait... and finally at 5.30 had to search for a member staff in an apparently empty hotel. We were eventually brought the bill (by a different server), but we weren’t asked how everything was, so couldn’t tell them we had been waiting for more than half an hour with cold pots of tea. Presumably there had been a shift change, and the new server had forgotten we were in there. But I’d still recommend, just for the scones!

I’ve always had positive experiences at Greywalls and booked Afternoon Tea to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Good COVID measures were in place. The day that we visited was very, very quiet, and we sat by the fire in one of the lounges. This was very pleasant and comfortable. Service was good and staff were polite and friendly. However, the food itself was a bit disappointing. The sandwiches were particularly poor. Thick, supermarket-grade, sliced bread which had dried out and was bordering on stale (the sandwiches had possibly been made hours earlier and chilled) with no butter. It was ‘all dry bread and little filling’ and we only took a couple of bites and left the rest. There was also an assortment of very sweet desserts and sweet cakes. The absolute highlight of the afternoon were the warm scones with jam and cream. All-up it was a pleasant experience, but those sandwiches certainly let the food down. And for £31.50 a head, they should have been better.

This smart hotel has a wonderful garden in which to enjoy a great tea experience. The tea selection is excellent. Scones are perfectly cooked. A full 3 tier experience is available and champagne add ons. It was disappointing that slices of cake on their own were not available.

What a fantastic afternoon we had. The tea was great as much as we could drink. The food was fantastic. I had no idea that a scone could taste so amazing. It took quite a while to eat as much as we could before we admitted defeat and took the rest home. Topped off by a leisurely stroll around the gardens. My friend and I won vouchers for afternoon tea here for two so we decided to take our daughters for a treat and were really looking forward to it. But we were all very disappointed. On arrival we were the only people there. We were served our coffees and drinks way before the afternoon tea was actually served and therefore had to order more drinks. My daughters friend ordered a hot chocolate that we had to return as it was obviously instant and made with hot water and was disgusting. When we ordered our second lot of drinks my daughters mocha had hardly any chocolate in it and she couldn’t drink it and then they forgot to bring my friends second coffee. By this time there were two other tables in and only one girl to serve all of us. The sandwiches and scones were nice however some of the cakes were very sweet and for me that is saying something given I have a very sweet tooth. Overall I have had far better in East Lothian for a lot less money. Just glad we weren’t paying for it.

Lovely sandwiches with salmon, egg and beetroot fillings- we did ask for no meat. The scones were really nice and lovely jams served with them. I would have liked some butter for the fruit scone though. The assortment of cakes were amazing my favourite being the cinnamon and apple choux bun with caramel on the top. I also loved the artichoke mousse. The tea is very good too we opted for the Earl Grey. Thanks to Abigail and Hannah for the most lovely of treats.

We arrived and parked on the side of the driveway leading up to the main door of the hotel. Coats taken, we were shown through the hotel past a very comfortable lounge area to the small dining area. Only one other party already there. We had booked afternoon tea for four. The savoury selection - one each of three small sandwiches - beetroot, ham and salmon with a small dill type concoction on a spoon and a mini pastry. The sweet selection consisted of ginger cake, chocolate cake, macaroons, lemon mousse. The freshly baked plain and fruit scones were delicious with clotted cream and jam. For my taste, there should have been more savoury and less sweet items.

Afternoon tea itself was delicious - little sandwiches in a selection of breads with fillings a little out of the ordinary, our selection included ham and celeriac and egg on curry bread. We also had two hot savouries - delicious little arancini bites and a light, flaky pastry. There was also a choice of plain or fruit scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam and an excellent selection of cakes including the lightest choux buns with a strawberry mousse-type filling, as well as slices of lemon, fruit and carrot cakes. A delicate and surprising afternoon tea at Greywalls. Blustery April afternoon, rain and sun making the gardens look glorious in their spring colours. Savouries both hot and cold were delicious- mull cheese pithiviers, rice balls and finger sandwiches on flavoured breads with scrumptious fillings. Then the sweets.... Too gorgeous to name all but my favourite was a choux bun with vanilla cream and something syrupy, possibly apple. The bloke was in raptures over cocoanut meringue with passion fruit cream. All bite size and everything fresh, mouthwatering and perfect. The service was also impeccable. A refreshing wander round the garden afterwards to walk off a bit of the sugar. An elegant afternoon out all round. Received as a Christmas present from dear friends and it was a great treat.

Delicious sandwiches and cakes served in style with a wide selection of superb teas. The lovely "fireside lounge" setting used for the afternoon teas might be a problem for people unused to holding a cup and saucer while reclining in a very plush deep sofa or perched on the edge. I prefer the London Ritz style with "sit up and beg" tables and chairs. But overall a very relaxing and enjoyable experience and full of Scottish baronial charm.

First and foremost, such an amazing setting. The Greywall's gardens are simply beautiful and on a sunny day the view to the coast is stunning; this is a venue that really showcases East Lothian's wild glory. The architecture of the house and walled gardens are worth a visit in and of themselves and the historic photos of the family in the ladies bathrooms are fascinating. Afternoon tea itself was very impressive, with far more food than could ever be eaten by two people in one sitting. Of particular note were the hot savouries, which were a little unusual and really delicious. This is not your run of the mill, tired and clichéd afternoon tea, Greywall's really know what they are doing and the whole experience is really lovely. Much, much better than countless afternoon tea offerings to be found in Edinburgh. Will definitely be back to try the restaurant soon.

In late spring/early summer the gardens are spectacular.Going in for tea, we choose the afternoon tea option (there are two others) and were overwhelmed by the amount and variety of goodies served to us - along with the unlimited tea and coffee. From the delightful savouries and sandwiches, through the deliciously light scones, jam and cream to the assortment of cakes and pastries, the tea was a feast for the eyes and nose as well as the inner person in need of sustenance. This was not my first visit to Greywalls and it most certainly won't be my last. I love the way the Greywalls staff make you welcome. From the time you enter the building and are led into the library for drinks and time to savour the menu to the table where the waiter service begins - and a very knowledgable service it is too. Your meal is rounded off with coffee/tea and petite fours in the library. You don't have to do it this way but to ensure you have the full experience I'd highly recommend that you do. This is not a restaurant or an experience you want to rush.I have never been to another restaurant where the food, service and atmosphere is so consistent and consistently excellent. I don't know that I would visit again for the gluten free option but it is of course only my personal opinion. I don't believe gluten free cakes should taste any less delicious then normal cakes. We had a delightful lunch at East Coast Musselburgh today, choosing from their set menu. The restaurant is clean, contemporary, and tastefully decorated, which created a welcoming atmosphere. We both started with the mussels in a spicy tomato sauce that also served as a flavorful broth. The sauce had the perfect balance of heat and richness, complementing the fresh mussels. For mains, I opted for the Spaghetti Harbour, which was generously portioned and packed with clams and mussels. The seafood was cooked perfectly, and the dish was hearty yet refined. My wife had the King Prawn Calamari, which was served with a light, perfectly cooked batter, accompanied by crispy skinny fries, a fresh salad, and tartare sauce. She loved the combination of flavors and textures. We washed everything down with a refreshing Leith draught beer, which rounded off our meal perfectly. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and we felt well taken care of throughout our visit. The facilities were well-maintained, including spotless toilets, which is always a good sign. Overall, the meal was excellent value for money, and we left feeling satisfied and eager to return. I highly recommend East Coast for anyone looking for fresh seafood and a great dining experience in Musselburgh.

Went here today for a birthday meal What a total and utter disappointment the quality of the food was very poor. I would have rated it no stars but had to give at least one to continue with the review. The meal I ordered was billed as a triple steak burger, OMG it was awful, when it was served to me the burger was bone dry and very small, over cooked and totally tasteless. There was no burger sauce, (what we were offered was a bottle of ketchup and seriously watered down mayo) there was no onion or cheese only a little piece of stale lettuce and one slice of very thin tomato in the very dry bun. It was listed as being served with rustic chips but I actual found they were nothing more than a handful of frozen skinny fries from a bag. I was charged almost £17 for this which is an absolute disgrace. I've had far better any tastier burgers from McDonald's for a third of the price. My partner had what was billed as peppered chicken which was very poor, served in a skillet which was no deeper than a saucer and it was served without rice which was listed on the menu. The manager came over before it was served and gave her a spoon and we were wondering why you would need a spoon to eat the meal! Then It became apparent when it was served, hardly any chicken and a few bits of pepper and onion and was swimming in some kind of peppered sauce, hence the spoon. This was also priced around £16/17, again ridiculously over priced for what was actually offered. We checked out the menu online before booking a table but when we arrived we were given a totally different menu from what was online. Then to top it all we paid cash and after some time we had to ask for our change from the bill (over £5). When the ki Manager came over he then said "folk normally say just to keep the change " we were Shocked and utterly embarrassed by this comment. What an absolute rip off this place is and we certainly won't be back .
