Had treated my mum to Afternoon tea will not be going back. Was very surprised at the lack of variety in the sandwiches also they were not the normal finger sandwiches more like doorstops , crusts were left on,Some of the scones were so hard it’s a wonder we didn’t break our teeth, such a shame as we have been there before and it has been very nice.We were informed that they were using different bread suppliers bit of a feeble excuse I can only guess the chef didn’t know how to make finger sandwiches.I did wonder why we were the only ones in there.Certainly wasn’t worth the money. If you like doorstep sandwiches fine if not don’t bother to go waste of money.

Great value afternoon tea for a group of ladies. The staff were very helpful and we had plenty of choice, the cakes were naughty but nice!

Good value afternoon tea for a group of girls. The waitress was very attentive & the cakes were lovely. The only thing that let this down is the quality of the sandwiches. They had clearly been hanging around for a while possibly uncovered as they were quite dry & starting to go crusty, although we did ask them to be replenished & the 2nd batch was much fresher(probably made to order as they took a while coming out). Fillings were fine but to be honest I've never had cheese & pickle in an afternoon tea before. The setting was lovely & we then carried on our get together on the terrace overlooking the garden.

I was really disappointed with the afternoon tea bought as a groupon deal at £16.95 per head!! For that price I would have expected better fillings than 1 finger each of cheese & Tom, Ham, egg mayo & Tuna sandwich’s. There were 6 small cakes and 2 scones each. They replenished the tea when you wanted and also give you a doggy bag to take home if you have anything left. Pleasant couple of hours, but the sandwiches were a let down 😩. I don’t think I would pay almost £34 again.

A little disappointed compared to other afternoon teas I have enjoyed. Venue is lovely. Great open fire in. Main bar area. But the room where we had our tea was cold and lacked atmosphere and could have done with a little background music. On to the food. OK we were not offered a glass of bubbly which was a bit of a let down. Coffee was really good. Not offered choice of cream or milk had to ask, it's the little things that make a difference! Sandwiches were very dry and the selection was odd. Turkey sandwiches three days after Xmas really? Cakes were OK not fab

The worst afternoon Tea, we were offered a choice of teas, the waiter brought the stand of sandwiches, cakes and scones, just put it down and walked away. No explanation of which each were. The sandwiches were boring and dry, obviously been left out and now starting to curl. Thin Ham and scape of mustard, egg, cheese and tomato, and tuna, not even salmon or smoked salmon. The cakes were dry, and boring, the so called fancy’s were dry and uninteresting. The best thing was the scones, which were fresh as they were still warm. The staff, just served, we were not asked if every thing was ok. On leaving we visited the Ladies toilet, the toilet paper was just put on the sanitary bin, not checked and put in the holder, the dirty hand towel put thrown on the side of the sink. I would not like to book a wedding here if they can’t get afternoon tea right !,

The room looked beautiful and my husband and I enjoyed a drink in the Champers Bar waiting for my cousin and her husband to arrive. She was visiting from Australia and I’ve not seen her for about 50 years - this afternoon tea was my treat for them. Apart from us there was just one other table with two guests occupied. What a disappointment when the food arrived! The little rectangular sandwiches looked like they had been unwrapped and put on the plate. There was no variety of cakes like I’ve seen in some of the reviewers’ photos. It looked like a brownie or two had been cut into smaller pieces and iced. The scones were ok. We had to wait a long time for extra hot water when requested. When we were offered fresh tea and coffee only tea arrived. We had to go and find a waitress to ask for coffee. Such a shame. We sat in the lounge afterwards for a couple of drinks and that was lovely. But I will not recommend this afternoon tea.

I visited De Rougemont Manor on Wednesday the 28th of February for Afternoon Tea to celebrate my mum and aunts birthday. When the food was presented to us the crisps to me looked as if they had either been broken or it was at the end of the packet some of the sandwiches were dry and also the cakes had dried out from where I believe they had been cut too early. As a party of five adults and two children we had to keep asking for refills (cheese, jam etc) as we wasn't asked if we needed anything else, we was never asked once if we needed our tea or coffee replenished. I appreciate it may of been short staffed that day due to the weather (it was snowing on and off) as there only seemed to be one member of staff working in the bar/restaurant. I feel really disappointed that the day was ruined by this as it was meant to be a nice get together for joint birthday celebrations. Also I have contacted the hotel and have not had any response back from them which again is awful customer service. All in all I will not be returning unless things are thoroughly improved and what should of been a lovely day celebrating was not.

As a group of friends we had previously been here for Christmas and had a nice time. Food was good, entertainment fine so decided to go back for afternoon tea. we had to pay a deposit which I find surprising as I haven’t experienced that with other restaurants. Still we went ahead and were all looking forward to it. Unfortunately it coinsided with the arrival of “the beast from the east”. My friend contacted them to ask if we could change the date as we were unable to travel but they refused even though they admitted that loads of other people had had to cancel. I find this decision quite unbelievable as we would have spent more had they let us change the date! Needless to say we will not use this restaurant again and will go somewhere where they value their customers more.

Went for their New Year's Eve Dinner and Dance event. Quite expensive for a three course meal but champagne was included. The dinner was served promptly and the way that the three courses were served by the excellent staff was impressive considering the large number of guests. There was also a DJ/Singer who was an excellent performer though his music was played very loudly with thunderous bass. There was dancing on a small dance floor which became very crowded - no chance of ballroom dancing. Altogether, a very enjoyable evening.

Very classy place for afternoon lunch. Set in a nice area with very picturesque gardens and swimming pool. We had a 2 course meal. The soup de jour and Chicken ballontine stuffed with savoury duxelle filled me up awfully well. Looking at the place my first thoughts were posh nosh small quantities of - but thankfully I was wrong. The service was great, we were offered fresh warm bread rolls and they catered for our 2 year old nicely. They also do a 3 Course Lunch with Bottomless Prosecco!!

I have been here twice for afternoon tea! It is a very nice establishment and the chefs are great - my friend is a diabetic and they were more than happy to switch out the cakes for some fresh fruit instead - I think that is very impressive. Always a nice treat and they seem able to cater for large parties too. Would recommend to a friend.

Attended a xmas party here on Friday evening. Rooms was decorated so felt very christmassy and tables nicely laid out but bar area too small for the number of people attending so trying to get a drink was tricky. The service at table was excellent they had got their system organised so there were no big delays between courses however the food for me was a disappointment whilst others in party were happy with it. My colleague had the soup which was so sharp she couldn't eat it, I had the camembert which was just a lump of cold cheese, it should have been warm and melted but it wasn't. For main I had the turkey which was fine and the vegetables were nice but the stuffing whilst hot was raw and needed finishing off in the oven. Dessert I opted for Eaton Mess which unfortunately I couldn't eat as it was 90% cream and you were hard pressed to find much meringue in it. The entertainment was good but the dance floor very small so really crowded. I wouldn't necessarily go back for a xmas do but would give it another chance for a meal as catering for over 100 people at a time isn't easy.

Just okay as far as afternoon tea goes I'm afraid. We did ask for extra sandwiches which were provided at no extra charge. Cakes appear mass produced and poorly put together . Scones are good. Not really the right atmosphere as the other diners are eating real food for lunch, so misses the whole atmosphere for afternoon tea. Personal preferences but the sandwiches are really cold when I think that affects the taste. 16 pounds a head so cheaper than some, but I would advise to shop around. As most persons attending we were looking forward with our friends to an enjoyable evening of dinner and dance. We were not expecting fine dining but the meals served were bordering on abysmal! The entertainment comprised of a live singer with music and a small dance floor for guests to enjoy. Out of the blue and without announcement a bride and groom plus wedding guests arrived alongside another unconnected group of around 15 young men all of which wanted to use the now totally overcrowded dance floor. Thus many "gala diners" were unable to enjoy a single dance on the dance floor because of the respective parties being shoe horned in to our Gala dinner and dance. To advertise such an event and charge persons around £100 each and then deny them something that has been advertised as part of the "Gala Dinner & Dance" was frankly unforgivable! With the Du Rougemont Manor's manager being unavailable "as you would be on one of the biggest nights of the year" it was left to a head waitress to come up with a solution? Sending a bottle of champagne to some tables did not hide the fact that for a short term gain they had crucially ignored the people that had supported their function and tarnished any good reputation they may have had previous to this evening!

Went to the de rougemont for afternoon tea last week. Have been previously but felt the standard had slipped sine the Summer. The ham sandwich was thin wafer ham slices where you would expect a higher quality of ham filling and the sandwich's were on the exceptionally small size. The scones were great along with the cream and Jam and the cakes were nice but not exceptional. Service was good but the wine was nice ( purchased in addition)For such a lovely venue the experience was below what we have experienced here before.

My wife and I were invited out for Sunday lunch and were booked in for two thirty. We arrived at one forty five for pre lunch drinks and told the receptionist we had arrived and would be having a drink or two. We had a reasonable chat despite the young children running around and as two thirty arrived no one offered us menus or indeed acknowledged us at all. Eventually having given them another quarter of an hour we approached a staff member who informed us that 'no one had told the restaurant that we were there and they had about given up on us'. We were then shown to our table and ordered our starters whilst listening to repeated renditions of 'happy birthday to you' with music provided by mobile phones. The waitress then served the starter, whatever happened to ladies first? The meal itself was good if not great and the wine, when warmed slightly, was good. We were not hurried, which was a good thing but it wasn't the 'special experience' we had hoped for, there are a lot better venues locally.

I met a friend there after receiving an offer on the price of the lunch. There were just four options for the main course one of which was vegetarian and I thought a wider variety would be an improvement. Salmon, Lamb shank and steak (for a supplement) is not a wide choice given the grandeur of the surroundings. Whilst the food was good I did feel it wasn't outstanding especially the salmon which was slightly overcooked. However we did enjoy ourselves in the quiet dining room and the staff were excellent allowing us to linger long after the bill had been paid.

For a large gathering its not always easy to get food servied hot and cooked well but we had no complaints on the night. There was plenty to eat, additional servings of potatoes and gravy arrived piping hot. The trio of mini desserts were actually full sized so you didnt miss out if only wanted a chocolate cake or mince pie. Music was good although could have been a bit more christmassy. Also we were in the outside hall and found this wasnt quite so well decorated in the festive mood at the main hotel. This is our fourth visit to De Rougemont Manor. We have had 2 afternoon teas at the hotel previously and a lunch. All purchased with Groupon which provides excellent value. On this occasion we took my mother in law for her birthday. As it was the school holidays my son (7) also came along so there were 5 of us for the "Afternoon tea for 4" deal. We had a slight mix up with the booking. When I rang on the day to ask if we could be seated outside (the weather was lovely) I was told there was no booking! Then I was told to "just come along and we'll fit you in". Odd because I had actually booked 3 weeks earlier and given it was for a birthday treat I was a little concerned we would be turned away. When we arrived we had a short wait for someone to seat us. A very attentive Oriental waiter came to see to us and he was very good all during our visit. He offered us top ups of the tea pots a couple of times and brought more milk. He also provided extra cup/plates for my son and no fuss was made about the extra person. We chose to eat outside as the weather was lovely. We didn't understand why everyone else was inside at first. Then the wasps came along! They were a bit of a nuisance, not the hotel's fault, but they were very persistent trying to get at the cakes and jam for the scones. In the end we made a "wasp trap" on a plate away from our table and they then left us alone. The Afternoon Tea itself was lovely. Plenty of sandiches, ham, egg, cheese, salmon and a different selection of cakes to those we had before. These were delicious, custard tart, strawberry tart, fresh cream eclair etc. plus the usual scones with jam/cream. Beautifully presented and delicious to eat. The custart tart pastry was exquisite. Despite the booking mix up and wasps we had a really enjoyable and special Afternoon Tea which was enjoyed by all present. We will definitely be back.

My husband got us an afternoon tea via a Groupon deal and we thought it would be nice to go somewhere more local. I had read the reviews so was looking forward to a sumptuous treat in lovely surroundings. We were greeted at the reception and told to go through to the bar area to book in.Not a good start as there was nobody behind the bar and we waited for about 10 minutes before somebody came in and showed us to our table. We then waited about 10 minutes before we were asked if we would like tea or coffee. The pot of tea came but not the afternoon tea and we waited patiently for the rest to arrive. The actual afternoon tea was presented really well and was enjoyable. Very tight on the cream to go with the scones though. We didn't see any waiting staff for the next 40 minutes so were unable to get a tea refill during this time. The tea was really hot and of a good English breakfast blend though. The waiting staff then disappeared again and we didn't see anyone until they came and asked if they could please take our cake stand as they did not have enough for the new guests arriving. Not a big thing but not very efficient. The thing that put me off the most was the place that our table was situated in was a through way to some of the bedrooms in the hotel, so we had random people wandering past us as they went backwards and forwards to their rooms. I did not like this at all as it ruined the atmosphere for me.This was topped of when a man in the bar area started to have a row on the phone with somebody and decided to bring the conversation through the restaurant area. Nobody said anything to him.The staff were very pleasant and helpful, they just were not attentive enough. If I had paid full price I would have been a little bit miffed!

Ten of us booked for dinner to celebrate a birthday, the outside has recently been cleaned up and painted and it looks good, unfortunately the budget could not stretch to the inside. It is still like stepping back into time and has not seen a lick of paint for at least 10 years. The service was non existent, stale bread rolls served with no butter, although on the third time of asking some was provided. Wine ordered, they seemed surprised when asked for a ice bucket and once the first glass was poured for the rest of the evening we had to walk to another table to retrieve the bottle to top everyone up. Then the food arrived. pre ordered menu how hard can it be. Although presentation was not too bad food was absolutely tasteless, we did ask if they could change one meal as we did not realise the risotto was not a traditional risotto but was risotto balls, we were told our mistake as the menu did say "pane" which means breadcrumbs you silly people. We were then basically asked to get involved in a dispute between waiter and the chef as to whether the menu was clear. We asked if they could may be provide a traditional risotto and was told no, so in the end one of our diners did not eat a main meal! Dessert was provided by us in the form of cup cakes, which we asked them to serve on a cake stand. When we inquired why one was missing, they then admitted that they dropped it on the floor and was hoping we would not notice. Cant say the staff where rude but just seemed to lack any waiting skills whatsoever, and definately require training on how to provide a service, i seriously have had better at the local pizza express. Table of ten, one bottle of wine, a few soft drinks, dessert supplied by us, including "service" £30 a head. fast forward to 2am and my girlfriend was sick, coincidence? you decide. Seriously do yourself a favour keep driving and go to the local chip shop!

My mother and I went here the other day using a groupon voucher. I telephoned a few days before to book it and unfortunately, it wasn't the best of starts. The receptionist asked me to "hang on a minute" but left me waiting for 11 minutes and I decided to put the phone down and ring again as I thought she had forgotten me. When I rang back and said I had been holding on I was offered no apology but she informed me that she did have four other people on hold. Even through this conversation she started to talk to someone else again with no apology when she came back to me. Driving to the place was easy to find especially if you have a sat nav. They have a lot of signs up advertising a hand car wash and this is the way to drive into the car park. I did not see any other signs that said car park. A few meters along at the front of the house is for disabled parking. The Manor is absolutely lovely from the outside and has lots of trees around. When we came into the house the two ladies on reception both looked up and greeted us and one of them took us into the bar area. The young man there greeted us and asked if we wanted to stay in the bar or go straight in for tea. We decided to stay in the bar area and sat on sofas which were right by a roaring fire which was great as it was very cold outside so we could warm up. We were given our pimms to drink and sat in front of the fire for a while. The young man was very pleasant and friendly and even offered to take a photo of us both. We were then shown into the tea room which had a lovely view of the gardens. Do look up at the ceiling. They have black and white pictures on the walls of the manor house and it's former occupants. White tablecloths with proper napkins, shame about the tea service used. They had three main categories of tea to choose from. The first was a variety of fruit teas. The second was a selection of green teas and the last was the traditional English teas and earl greys etc. We were brought out a three tier cake stand. There were four finger sandwiches each which consisted of smoked salmon, cheese, cucumber and something else. I needed to actually look at it as I was unsure of the contents it looked like just a spread of butter. It was egg mayonnaise. Unfortunately, the bread was very thick and the egg was so thin on there that you could not taste it. There was some spicy crisps served with the sandwiches. There were four different cakes and four scones - two fruit and two plain which came with a very small amount of strawberry jam and very nice clotted cream. The scones had been heated and tasted very nice. Unfortunately, it did not seem that any were hand made there but had been bought in. As we only had one cake of each we cut them in half and shared them so we could get to taste them all. The cakes we had were a fruit tart, a runny custard tart with two raspberries on top, a chocolate fudge tart and a slice of lemon sponge. If I had paid the £15 a head for this I would have been very upset. So many places are now doing good afternoon tea and I feel that this sadly is not one of them. The cakes especially have let this place down. Afternoon tea is an occasion even the cakes in John Lewis's restaurant are much more inviting. Would I come back? Actually yes I would but not for afternoon tea. The menus they had on the table advertising valentines day and mothers day seemed very nice. I know the reviews for both the meals and hotel stays have been positive and the staff we met on the day were very friendly and polite. This place is lovely, the setting, the grounds, the staff on the day. Get these small things right with the afternoon tea and the place would be onto a winner.

My mum treated 9 of us to an afternoon tea, we had a lovely table. We were greeted by a friendly waitress, who brought over our tea. The sandwiches were made with really thick bread with a tiny spread of filling, do little in fact we could decide what flavour they were. There was a very small selection of cakes, bought in cakes, not home made. There was also a scone each, also bought in. We enquired what teas were on offer, and asked for Breakfast and Earl Grey,we were then presented with tea bags on strings and pots of hot water to make our own! I asked four lemon with my tea and was given a few slices in a glass. All in all not what you would expect from such a hotel. We choose this hotel as my Mum had had a meal there before and enjoyed it. We complained in a letter which was replied to promptly with a part refund and a letter that just made excuses but did confirm that done of the cakes were bought in! Won't be visiting again... very disappointing

My wife and I often drink coffee in various Costas and enjoy them. We have decaf coffee and usually coconut milk latte. We went to the Costa in Shenfield and ordered the above. It was so weak it was like drinking hot milk. My wife complained and the server very kindly put an extra shot of coffee in each cup, but not much difference. £8 wasted.

Friendly local pub. Lovely food with lots of choice (portions too big for me) and pleasant staff. Will definitely be going back soon.
