We were greeted by Giovanna who has served use afternoon tea many times before and did not disappoint with her sunny attitude and kindness in making my friend’s birthday fun and enjoyable. Giovanna is a credit to this wonderful hotel. We are treated to this experience every year and are never disappointed.

This was our 9th visit to The Bedford Lodge for Afternoon Tea and again we were not disappointed. Giovanna has served us many times before and is always fantastic, she is a great asset to the hotel and makes us feel so special. The afternoon tea was delicious as usual and all allergies and requests were adhered to with no fuss. It is by far the best Afternoon Tea we have and I always recommend it to anyone visiting Newmarket. We will be returning in December when we are in Newmarket again.

Visited for the Easter children’s Afternoon Tea on Good Friday with 4 Grandchildren. This was absolutely lovely, so well done with great food for both the children and the adults. Everyone was made very welcome and all the food was so well presented, with refillable drink for the children included in the price. A great selection of sandwiches and cakes including a chocolate plant pot filled with chocolate mousse and soil which the children loved. A really lovely Easter treat, and they even had a chocolate egg treat to take home. Great value and an afternoon enjoyed by us all. Thank you to everyone who worked on that day to make it so special for everyone.

Could not go for an afternoon tea as the chef wasn't prepared for us. I rang in the morning to ask for afternoon tea that day. Not a party of huge numbers just the two of us. So their chef couldn't manage a couple of sandwiches, scones and some cake. Should have the 4-stars removed.

Afternoon Tea was very disappointing, Sandwiches were clearly not made freshly as they were dry, bread seemed stale and lacking much filling, i had a bone in the chicken sandwich which i told the waitress but no one came and spoke to me regarding the matter let alone apologise! The cakes looked good but that was it. Scones were the best bit.

I went for a lovely afternoon tea this afternoon with a friend. The service was efficient with very polite and welcoming staff. The food was delicious and freshly prepared, what we didn’t eat we were allowed to take home. I have a soft spot for Bedford Lodge, having married here 12 years ago, the hotel has only got better and better! Never had a bad experience. The hotel is modern but sympathetic to its heritage, the staff have always been exceptional and I never hesitate to book here! I will continue to visit over the coming years.

We had an amazing afternoon tea with family and friends in the restaurant. The service was outstanding, nothing was too much trouble and the the pots of tea and coffee were refreshed frequently. I was very impressed with the sandwiches which were well filled using quality ingredients. The warm sausage rolls and tarts were delicious. The scones were served warm with a lovely home-made lemon curd as well as jam and clotted cream. We also enjoyed the stunning range of cakes and desserts. I would recommend to anyone who expect a high standard of service in a beautiful setting.

Lovely setting in the orangerie, nice table decoration. Service was good but not overly attentive. I am a regular customer at the Bedford Lodge hotel but would not return for an afternoon tea unless the quality is improved. Please, please propose a more suitable selection of cakes ! Stolen, scones, fruit cake, orange cake, enormous sausage roll, thick sandwiches which more bread than filling. Sadly you have to drink a gallon of tea to go through it. Should be advertised as "An Afternoon tea for two hungry men" No fine patisserie there I am afraid.

I have had a lot of afternoon tea's, all over the country and also in Cambridge- most are over prized and disappointing. But not the tea at Bedford lodge hotel- it is simply perfect! Staff are friendly and inviting, everything is clean- high tea is served beautifully and the handmade cakes are like little pieces of art- there so pretty, you don't want to eat them! Scones are freshly made, soft, warm and delicious and you get two rather then one, you pay the same in some places in Cambridge and only get given one! Home made everything including lemon curd which is YUMMY! good servings and lovely drinks. sandwiches were fresh and didn't taste old or stale like in so many other places. The best afternoon tea around, well worth the money!

We were told we could not have s refund even though we gave them many hours notice, the best the could offer was to pack it in boxes and we could collect. My brother inlaw drove the 40 minutes to collect the sandwiches and cakes, what a waste of time the food was awful .Dry tasteless sandwiches and the cakes were sweet tasteless mush, dry scones all 8 adults had the same opinion. We explained that my mother was very sick they are not flexible not allowed to change date and lack compassion .

My wife and I have just returned from Afternoon Tea at the Bedford Lodge Newmarket . Although the four finger sandwiches were disappointing I asked if I could get four more finger sandwiches. I was told This would be and extra £4. I declined but felt that having been to the Savoy in London and The Raffles in Singapore for afternoon tea that it was unreasonable extra charge. Not impressed with the afternoon tea or some of the staff especially an older member .

My husband and I were very disappointed with the afternoon tea that we received, especially as our daughter had bought my Husband his for a Father’s Day present. Bedford lodge is definitely style over sustenance and a few tweed waist coats and nice looking surroundings do make a good afternoon tea. The sandwiches were dry and I had the end of the bread on one of mine! The scones were burnt and had been microwaved within an inch of their lives, I have had better scones from the supermarket and I would go as far as to say that they were the worst scones that I had ever eaten. The cakes looked nice but to be frank they all tasted the same as the same cream was used on all of the cakes. There was a coconut profiterole and who ever thought of this was not onto a winner, the coconut made the cream runny and it could have easily have been mistaken for off cream. The restaurant was completely empty when we arrived and we were seated next to the waiting staff work station and the corridor for the toilets, so we were constantly being walked around which meant that it was not a very relaxing experience. The final straw was when a £5.30 service charged was added and by the time we left the restaurant they where no way near full, so I am not sure what this charge was for as it wasn't as if the staff had to work any harder whilst we were there. It is a real shame, we had been her for a couple of afternoon tea's a few years ago and they were really good, especially the gentlemen’s afternoon tea, however this is definitely not the case now. I wouldn't recommend this afternoon tea and will not be going back again.

We arrived early, let the staff know we were there, asked whether we should come back at the appointment time but told no, they would come and get us. Sat outside, ordered drinks. We were asked by a couple of different team members whether we wanted refills, explained waiting to go in for AT so we would wait. Eventually we went back and asked what was going on as no-one had come to get us. Had to wait for a table to be set so clearly had some communication issues with staff. If we hadn't gone and checked not sure we'd have actually eaten. Chose the tea, arrived with no milk or sugar. Had to ask 2 different servers before any was provided. Server offered changes to any sandwich we didn't like, I made a change, on arrival mine was the same as everyone else. Poor communication again. Some of the bread was dry, and fillings in some were scant, at best. Sausage roll was lovely. Cakes arrived after sandwiches, these looked very nice, sadly the scones were terrible. Over kneaded, heavy and very over cooked. Most disappointing. Its a lovely setting, and we may just have been unlucky, but I don't think I'd hurry back.

Visited with a group of 16 for afternoon tea to celebrate a birthday. The food had been pre ordered. We were first served 4 finger sandwiches each, which were nicely filled. We were offered unlimited teas and coffees, including decaf. Next arrived two large fresh warm scones each with jam, cream and lemon curd. Lastly we had a selection of small cakes. All of the food was nicely presented. The man that served us was very efficient and also replenished jugs of iced water without being asked. One guest had gluten free food which was all excellent. Certainly recommend. They offer different afternoon teas to suit those with a smaller appetite or savoury.

An impressive building with plenty of car parking. Inside the building is well maintained and very nicely decorated.Four of us went for afternoon tea. We had two cream teas and two gentleman's teas, basically a sweet selection and a savoury selection. Both types had very generous portions and varied offerings. Some of the food was excellent, but some elements were not quite so good such as some of the sandwiches that we found tasteless and greasy. I was also disappointed with the tea, I was hoping for something like English breakfast, but the Teapig Everyday Blend just didn't hit the spot for me, so I changed to coffee.I liked the fact that everything was not brought out in one go, but was served in courses so we didn't feel overwhelmed by a mountain of food. The staff were helpful and attentive, nothing was too much trouble for them. They kept our beverages topped up and brought out extras such as butter, lemon curd (outstanding!} and even an a addition plan scone for one of our party who doesn't like fruit scones. We were sitting at our table chatting for about three hours, all very relaxed. We noticed the attention to detail. For example one of our replacement cups was not with the same design of saucer as the other cups, so it was quietly corrected. I also noticed that small things like there was no limescale on the taps in the gents and everything was spotless and smelling nice.I would be happy to go again and would hope that the small issues that we had about the food would have been corrected.

We were rather cramped on a table stuck by the door . Not much room to display the afternoon tea. The sandwiches were rather dry. The scones were nice and the lemon curd, jam and cream complimented them well. The cakes were nice enough but just laid on a large plate that was squeezed onto the table. I was upset to notice that they charged me a service charge without even asking me. I was going to leave a tip but they had already taken it themselves. I have been here before and it was much nicer. Just a bit disappointed.

A gorgeous venue at this lovely hotel for an afternoon tea. Everyone is so smart and professional but not pretentious. Our waitress, who I think was named Beth, was so very nice. She was attentive, friendly and appeared interested in us and shared in our celebration of a Birthday and Anniversary. Her smile, and professionalism made our visit perfect. She's a real credit to the Bedford Lodge.Afternoon tea was very nice. Hard for me to say because I love my food, but there was a little too much. Sandwiches nice but if I'm honest, I'd rather have a cheese sandwich than a cucumber one. We also had smoked salmon, egg and chicken. Next came the scones, beautifully fresh and warm with clotted cream, ham and lemon curd. We certainly didn't need two each! The cakes came last which all looked so nice, nothing heavy as some places serve up. I managed one but just couldn't manage any more. I'm not complaining in the least, I have a huge appetite but just couldn't fit anymore cake in. Beth boxed our uneaten cakes so that we could enjoy them at home. We drank as much tea as you could manage which was lovely too. There was no rush to get us out either. I would highly recommend it. Every member of staff we came across had a smile and a friendly welcoming nature but Beth was outstanding for me, a great person for the hospitality industry.

I booked this up with ease over the phone for my husband birthday. I asked to have this slightly earlier at 2pm rather than the 2.30pm as stated . This wasn't a problem . I pre booked a traditional afternoon tea and a gentleman afternoon tea . We arrived at 2pm the hotel looked stunning very clean and modern.our coats were taken and we was shown to our table drinks order were taken very quickly. The contents of our package were explained and we was asked if we wanted plain or cheese Scones which was nice . The restaurant was quite with only 3 people but this was a afternoon weekday . Plenty of staff on shift .we sat and waited for 40 mins before a lady came and explained there was a problem with the order and they were now doing it . By this time we was clock watching as we needed to home for the children . 50 mins later food arrived . The gentleman tea was amazing the food was delicious was a really nice twist to the traditional afternoon tea . The traditional afternoon tea was not the best , sandwiches were dry around the edges and made with a pre sliced white loaf . I would of liked uncut bread . Scones were brought out then the cakes . We was only asked once towards end if we wanted another drink . We had been there 1/12 hours by then . We didn't feel rushed but this good of been due to slow service it was hard to enjoy the afternoon as we were disappointed with the wait so this really puts a damper on the experience . We asked for the bill and our cakes were boxed to take home . We have had many afternoon teas and although the gentleman tea was great the traditional was nothing special , service was not the best . Which was a shame because the setting was perfect.. I have read good reviews about the afternoon teas so hopefully this was a one off .

I took my Nan to Bedford Lodge Hotel on a Friday, the bar / restaurant was busy with business meetings, but there was a mix of people and families enjoying the bar area. I'd asked for a 'cosy' seating area for my Nan, and they didn't disappoint with two huge velvet arm chairs for us to sit in. The afternoon tea comes in three stages - Sandwiches first, then scones, then cakes. Our tea was constantly topped up and the service was impeccable. The highlight of Bedford Lodge's afternoon tea is the freshly baked scones which comes warm, you get two huge ones each. You'll insist on eating one but attempt to try and eat both as they are so yummy. We took lots of our cakes away in a box as we were very full. Worth every penny, and we will be coming back again and again! My Nan said it was better than any top London hotel Afternoon tea.

Having visited most London hotels for afternoon tea (The Ritz, Fortnum and Mason, claridges etc), we are used to enjoying a high standard of both service and food. It was wonderful, therefore, to encounter both in a hotel so close to home. The service was excellent and the food was imaginative and beautifully presented. The 'Gentlemans' Tea was fabulous as was the full afternoon tea. Well done to The Bedford Lodge - probably the best afternoon tea in the area.

The restaurant is newly renovated / decorated so all sparkly and classical with an assortment of really comfy chairs and well set out tables. It is a little long and thin with stairs down to a darker part of the restaurant so not lavishly open. Plus they use it for lunch service as well so you might end up facing someone eating a steak or having a business meeting. They also offer a Gentleman's afternoon tea which replaces the finger sardines with a mini toasted BLT and offers a selection of 3 yummy pastries - one filled with confit tasting moist and yummy lamb and one a roost coated prawn with spiced sauce - all very good.I wasn't offered a choice of sandwiches on my regular afternoon tea and hate egg sarnie, but it was too late to request not to include them which was a shame - I've always asked before and told what the selection is, would of liked this touch. So if you go and don't like egg, smoked salmon or ham with mustard - let em know!. I also never got asked if I preferred plain or fruit scones and got one of each - unfortunatly they came hot and freshly baked but over cooked, I should of really complained as I saw tables around me get the perfectly baked ones. So again make sure they know what you prefer if they don't ask you. But they did taste lovely - with jam, lemon curd and plenty of clotted cream with the offer of more if we wanted it. I did ask for butter though as like all 3, not sure if lemon curd goes but it was tasty. I was so full the scones were humungous - we left the plain but they offered to box them so we could take them away - - a nice touch. Then they brought the cakes - oh, the cakes. A great selection - I got a delish macaron, a lovely gooey brownie, mousse with choc spoon and other cake. The gentleman came with choc tiffin, syrup tart and another cake - - again we took some home. All delicious, all well presented, service good apart form not being offered choices, all fresh, all nicely served and delivered in good time of each other. My one big grip apart from the over baked scones was the lack of tea choice - - I love fresh tea there was only 5 choices of tea and all Tea pigs (basically Typhoo - but fresh in a bag) Green, camomile, earl grey, berry, peppermint and plain- non of which work to make the perfect afternoon tea. I ended up mixing camomile with earl grey to make a better infusion. But would expect to see a fresh choice of afternoon blended tea and single leaf tea or at least a better choice of tea bag like assam or darjeeling. If this is a prob - take your own!!! I would have to if I went again. But all said a nice generous selection - around £19 pp

Always on the lookout for a new afternoon tea experience, booked one here to celebrate a birthday after reading the reviews, despite it being an hours drive! Could only get in late afternoon by which time there were plenty of empty tables. Room was averagely decorated with not a lot of atmosphere. Greeting was very lukewarm and disinterested. Not offered a list of teas and when asked what was available were told "we have lots"! Not a great start! Had three different waitresses which was a little uncoordinated. The sandwiches were fresh and plentiful but the table hadn't been set with plates or napkins. the scones were average. The plate of cakes was very attractive but we were one flavour missing and unsure what each cake was as they didn't seem to fit the menu description. We asked for information on this but we're just handed back the menu so obviously the waitress didn't know what they were either! On the whole a very disappointing experience for a special afternoon tea surprise ( and we have had plenty to compare!) and not particularly cheap at £19.

My partner's birthday and afternoon tea paid for by her family. It took 3 hours to serve a very mediocre tea - insufficient savouries and a deluge of poor sweets. The straw that broke the camel's back was the plate decorated with Happy 60th birthday. For the avoidance of doubt she is far from 60. Everything was delicious and plenty of time was given to eat (or box up what you can't manage). The staff where helpful yet discreet. Can't recommend enough and all for £15 each. Great afternoon tea, we had both the gentlemans afternoon tea and the 'normal' one, the sandwiches were really tasty, the scones amazing and very generously sized and the cakes also great. The staff were really friendly and attentive, I would definitely recommended this and will be visiting again.

Delicious sandwiches, scones and cakes/pastries. Service was excellent, they were happy to get extra tea/sandwiches when asked. Lovely atmosphere and surroundings. Would definitely go again!! Thank you! :-)

Our kids regard this as the best meal of our entire trip, and it was a lovely afternoon tea. Each course was beautifully presented and delicious. The atmosphere was very pleasant - we enjoyed sitting near the fireplace, and the service was excellent. I would highly recommend tea at the Bedford Lodge . . .

Treated my parents to afternoon tea at The Bedford lodge for the first time. We eat in the bar there quite a lot but never had Afternoon tea. The staff as always were polite , efficient and nothing was too much trouble. It was my step father's Birthday so we had a glass of bubbly to start and then the finger sandwiches arrived. I asked before hand if i could change one of mine as i do not like egg and that was fineThe scones came out warm and delicious followed by the Amazing selection of cakes with the added touch of Happy Birthday scolled on my fathers plate which was a nice touch. We could not eat every cake or scone so we were given a bag to take them home wirh an extra pot of jam. A very relaxed and scrummy afternoon !

This is my favourite venue for afternoon tea - have been many times with family/friends/hubby and it never fails. The food, tea & service is always wonderful. The only annoying thing about making a reservation here for afternoon tea is that you have to pay upfront which can be a bit of a pain when booking for a large party - a deposit if necessary would be better.Would absolutely recommend for afternoon tea!

We had an afternoon tea at Bedford Lodge, and in addition had 2 desserts from the main dessert menu. The service, general ambience and quality of food were very good. In particular, the desserts were delicious, with unusual combinations of flavours and beautifully presented. I particularly liked the passionfruit dessert which combined different textures and flavours. Altogether a very enjoyable afternoon!!

I took my parents for afternoon tea to celebrate their Golden Wedding the week before and my mum's birthday the day before. The two waitresses that looked after us were very busy because there was a wedding on and a 70th lunch party, but they were very friendly and approachable and nothing was too much trouble. Their explained the set up with the tea, i.e that the waitress would take the drinks order (my parents were having the champagne afternoon tea and I was having a standard one), then she would bring the drinks, then the sandwiches would follow. When the sandwiches arrived, the waitress explained that we could have a refill if we wanted, but warned us that the afternoon tea was very filling, so we declined. She also said that we could have refills of tea or coffee at any time. The scones came next and they were lovely - warm from the oven and really tasty. After one plain and one fruit scone each with cream, jam and lemon curd, we were all really full so when the cakes arrived, we asked if we could take those home with us. This again was no problem, the bar man came and took the plate away and then brought us the cakes wrapped in foil. Overall a wonderful experience, as we weren't rushed but treated like valued customers and the food was lovely. Would definitely come again in future for afternoon tea!

Little bit expensive, but well worth it, couldn't eat it all, more than enough scones and cakes for more than two.

A friend and I needed afternoon tea. Maybe the sulky waitress had personal problems but we felt unwelcome and the choice was limited to an expensive afternoon tea at £15 wheareas we wanted tea and a cake. It did not appear this was possible She went sullenly off to "ask the chef"When tea came there were cookies with it and this sufficed. The two waitresses made no effort to engage with us and we did not feel like leaving a tip.I've visited the Bedford Lodge for 30 years on and off and this was certainly an "off" moment. Buck up your standards Bedford Lodge or you will lose your local visitors!

We had the most fantastic evening, the food was absolutely perfect. The steak and peppercorn sauce was so flavoursome and cooked to perfection. The staff were attentive and fun and the evening atmosphere was gorgeous, with lovely cosy lighting and music. An absolute gem in Newmarket ⭐️
