Admiral Fish Bar in South Derbyshire

I think the reviews of some have been unfair. This chip shop has improved recently. We are locals and long time customers when Steve used to own the chippy. We last visited on the first weekend of July, the chips were delicious and we're enjoyed by all our friends. I would give the Admiral another go if you haven't been for a while- I think you will enjoy it!

Terrible cod...very dry and the batter was like rubber...not sure how long it was sat ...if it wasn’t for the fact we lived 15 minutes away we would have definitely taken it back

Still disgusting go somewhere else told by the local shop keeper to try it again it’s a lot better well sorry he’s wrong fish tasted disgusting and the chips where cold never again .

The last two times I have been to this chip shop with my young girl at 8:10, and there was hardly any food available, said they hadn’t got what I wanted (fish bites, doner meat or curry sauce), I had a member of staff sweeping the floor around my feet when was trying to order, It used to be my go to chip shop. I’m more annoyed as I drive past other chip shops to go to this chippy only to be disappointed! I certainly will not be back!!!!

Fish and chips were amazing the crunch into the batter then straight into the fish was mouth watering and the customer service was incredible will deffo will be returning

We are long time customers but haven't used the admiral for a considerable time while we cut back on take-aways. However popped in for a quick fish and chips. I have to say, the meal was brilliant. The fish was unbelievably fresh and tasted as good as anything by the sea. The chips were really good also. Fish and chips have gone up in price a lot over the last few years, but it is arguable that fish and chips were too cheap compared to Indian or Chinese cuisine. Personally, we thought a pretty good fish meal with the best ingredients for under a tenner is very reasonable

Make sure your hungry the servings are massive bestcfish n chips I've had in a long while.Also pleasant staff as well had a bit of a laugh with them all

The quality of the fish was terrible, the worst fish I have ever had. Fish was like mush, the batter was over cooked in the outside and under cooked on the inside. Staff appeared nice and quick service, but I definitely wouldn't recommend anyone

This used to be a go to whilst camping but sadly the previous owners have sold the business to a surly pair who obviously deem it acceptable to reduce the menu take the enjoyment out of the food and hike the prices. You were always assured of a warm welcome the most huge portion of homemade onion rings and a fish the size of a whale but sadly no more we got a meagre portion of 6 bought in onion rings for £1.80, an anaemic portion of fish and members of management seeing fit to talk down to staff and customers alike. We will not be back in hurry and may even retry the site fish van as surely can’t be worse.

I really don’t understand the hype around this place. Never particularly rated it but thought I’d give another go as new owners are in. Bang average pie and anaemic chips. The anaemic, undercooked chips have always been the issue for me here. Unfortunately, it’s a legacy from the previous owners which seems to have been continued.

Having read the rather recent poor reviews on here about the decline of this fish shop due to new ownership,!and having passed it several times during a short break away on holiday, I decided to check it out. I decided it looked reasonable so gave fish and chips a go. I have to say it was a really nice meal, the fish was large and crispy and tasted good. I’m quite fussy about fish and chips so I was pleasantly surprised. Although trip adviser is a useful guide, sometimes people only bother to leave reviews when they aren’t happy. Credit where credit is due I would eat from there again.

This used to be the best in the area, but no more. This is the first time I've been in since Stelios left and it will be the last. The portions were large, but the chips were partially cooked and swimming in grease. A real shame and now i understand why the car park was empty at 5pm on a Saturday.

This used to be the best fish and chip shop in the area but very disappointed with yesterday’s meal. I normally have a small fish because the large ones are enormous. The small ones used to be a ‘normal’ size compared to other places. The fish I got yesterday was very small and thin, not thick enough to have any texture. Worse, the batter was pale and mushy and I had to scrape it off - I fed it the dogs. Perhaps need a ‘medium’ size properly cooked for a normal portion.

Wow what an absolutely amazing fish bar. 2 young ladies serving, very polite and order absolutely correct. They seem to be new and are doing brilliantly. The fryer, another young lady, clearly new exactly what she was doing steering the ship like a seasoned Admiral. Food beautiful and loads of it. Such a shame we are only here on holiday or we'd definitely be regulars!

Disgusting these are the worst fish and chips I’ve had in years . This place as gone down hill so much since steve left we will never use this chippy again

Hi first time going to the admiral since Steve packed up and I got there at 17.30 on Saturday 4 September and when I walked in I noticed only half the top of the range was lit up and in use and I could not see any fish cooked and I asked for 2 small cod and they got 2 out of the rang , I thought at the time they did not look very good when I got home they were dark brown and the batter was that hard you could not cut it with a knife and when I looked at the receipt to phone up and complain, I see they had charged me for 2 large cod £5 xtra, can I just had that it looked like 3 school children were working at the chip shop , and I have been informed that a Muslim family that own the greyhound at woodville own the admiral now it used to be that good when Steve h ran the admiral I used to travel from church gresley, this is a true account from mr bird

We've been coming the fish shop for many years, it has recently changed hands and although initially wary....... have to say the fish and chips were red hot and delicious! The staff were delightful and extrenely helpful. 👍❤ Mum said it was the best fish she's tasted in a long time! Good luck to the new owners, we travel from Tamworth and we will definitely be continuing to come. 😊

I do not live near by but I always call here if we are passing. I have never known such large portions anywhere & food is great. Only 1 down point is that they don’t accept card payment.

Great food, friendly Owner and Staff and the largest fish you will see anywhere. Just don't park on any of the Double Yellow lines around the area, use the Car Park!

Best ever fish and chips, I used to live in Shetland,where we allegedly had the best chippy in UK and whilst it was good, with fresh fish, the Admiral is at least equal. Great friendly service, and fantastic food, near to where I now live, parking available. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Come here practically every Friday as my treat after working away all week. The moment I leave work, I look forward to getting food from here. Always the best quality, HUGE portions, great prices and smiling happy staff. Could not recommend this place enough!

Without doubt consistently the best fish and chips I have tasted anywhere in England - including Whitby. Good-sized portions and friendly staff. I regularly travel five miles to visit this chippy - we have plenty of good ones in our town but none as good as The Admiral. It's well worth the journey.

Load of chips normal portion feeds two. Haddock are massive fills a plate. Good service you know you are going to have more than you can eat. Terrific value I have been going there for years and best for miles around.

Probably one of the best fish and chip shops you are likely to find. Probably bestnot to order chip twice if you are a couple, as one surving was enough for two. Been twice now, and although I live 8 miles away. I am thinking of driving out the rather than go to My local fish and chip shop.

Good chips and lovely batter. The chips were delicious and the batter wasn't too thick, so it was crispy with no soggy middle.

I have always found this chippy to be the absolute best by a mile. Awesome fish. Very friendly staff. I can only think those who left a poor review caught them on a bad day. I wouldn’t go anywhere else for fish n chips!

We recently moved in to the are and we ordered from Admiral few times now. However we noticed that quality of food has significantly declined and portions got even smaller. Is note worth the money ! We are also very disappointed with the service. We understand that they get really busy but being more polite wouldn't hurt.... You are local F&Ch; shop and you relay heavily on loyal costumers but don't understatement new customers and sort your customer service.

So I don't get fish from here anymore as it's always greasy and slimy. I popped in to get a cone of chips today and the lady started dishing up a normal portion. When I reiterated that I said cone she told me I have to ask for them to be open. Who EVER asks for a cone of chips to be open. IT'S A CONE!!! She then told me at least twice that I should have said open to which I said don't worry about it I don't want them.

We decided after a busy day to have a chippy tea and were left wishing we hadn't.

What a great place to get your fish and chips from, very friendly top service and excellent food. will certainly be going back for more.

My friends and I arrived at the admiral late Saturday evening to order fish and chips. We arrived very close to closing time and there was not a great deal of choice (understandably).

Good quality, reasonably priced, good variety on the menu. Just a shame that it is about 5 miles away from me, I drive past 5 chippies to get to this one. Friendly welcoming staff every time is a good bonus.

I used to live in Burton so would visit the admiral quite often. I moved out of the area for a number of years but I have recently moved back and the admiral is still as great as before. We orderd four of the biggest mini fish and chips I have ever eaten. Fish was fresh and the batter was crisp. Staff were very friendly.

We take the kids fortnightly to see their grandparents who live just round the corner from here so we always pop to The Admiral for our tea! The staff are always friendly and efficient and the boss Steve is lovely. We very often have to queue but we don't mind. It's a sign the food is good if it's always busy and folks don't seem to mind the wait for freshly cooked grub and huge portions too! On the downside, parking is a bit tight in the car park and you can't always find anywhere on the side roads when they're busy.

When God conceived the idea of chip shops around the world, he went to the Admiral for the blueprint - it is friendly, efficient, delicious and that is just the staff!! The food is perpetually excellent and terrific value for money. Portions are generous and the menu is wide ranging. Just to add balance to this review, so it is not just a hysterical plus plus about this glorious eaterie, the car park is a nightmare and can get very congested...

I have been using the Admiral for the past 5 years, you can't get better near and around Swadlincote. Would highly recommend to anyone who likes a quality bag of fish and chips.

The staff are always so friendly and the fish and chips are perfect. We always go here when we want fish and chips as it's the best in the area. Parking is often a bit tight in the rear carpark though.

Staff - absolutely lovely. Food - best chip shop fayre I have ever eaten. Quantity - enough to feed a small village. Quality - beyond compare. Price - would pay more!! Queue - yes, there was a queue and that speaks volumes about the food and the banter was good fun.

Everything about the Admiral fish bar is brilliant from the owners, the service to the great food. The chips are super tasty and massive portions but in particular I love the kebabs they do. I've tasted a lot of kebabs both at local chip shops and around the UK but the ones they do here are definitely the best ever and certainly something to rave about. They are huge portions at a decent price and the meat is flavoursome and tasty and salad lovely and fresh. Also they toast the Pitts bread just right so it is warm but still soft. I've been to other places where they over toast it so it becomes hard andcdry like a crisp bread!! I would recommend their kebabs wholeheartedly. They are delicious.

Decided on Fish and Chips for tea so as it was just across the road from our holiday cottage why would we go elsewhere? Oh boy we were not disappointed. Polite and friendly staff and huge portions of both fish and chips. I asked for large and was greeted with the question of had I had their portions before to which I relied no. I will show you the lady said before you waste your money and I’m glad she did cos the medium was what looked like a full fryer full . They tasted splendid as well and would recommend this place to anyone.

Having moved locally a few years ago, to be closer to the National Forest for retirement. We were absolutely over the moon to find that what I can only describe as one of the best chippies I have ever visited (and it is on our doorstep - what a win). I have lived all over the UK, in Scotland, N Ireland, Wales and England and frequented many chip shops in my time. Surely, this family run takeaway is the best by far, huge portions and reasonable cost, with a yummy taste wins every time.Queues are often out of the door, it is so popular and the fish (whales) are truly to die for.

Fabulous fish and chips, with literally the largest fish I've ever seen and the largest portion of chips.

Never been disappointed with a visit to the Admiral. The fish particularly is excellent - huge, great quality and piping hot. The portion of chips is generous too - we’ve never eaten them all yet! Whilst it is often busy with a queue there are always plenty of friendly staff on so you don’t have to wait too long. Best chippie in the area - try for yourself.

Came past here looking for dinner tonight and so pleased to have found it. The portions are huge, the staff are friendly and the food tastes good. Good bit of parking out back and very quick turn around for the order. Very impressed and deserves the good reviews it gets.

I was on a long journey to visit relations in Derby, and had decided to look for fish and chips before I got there. So I left the motorway at the end of the M42, and took the road towards Burton. Very soon I saw the Admiral, and the busy car park was a good sign of what was to come, as was the fairly long queue inside.

What more can I say fish and chips delicious and very generous portions. The small Cod and chips and curry sauce were delicious excellent value for money.

Lovely friendly staff and a beautiful meal. Nice clean environment and all staff happy to help in whatever you want. Talks to everyone that comes in and even the children, nice portion sizes so you are not left hungry.

This fish and chip shop is the best you will find for miles, the fish is large and freshly cooked, the chips are always fresh, they sell kebabs larger that you will have ever seen before and the staff are really friendly.
