Today I got an credit card payment over 1200 GBP from this restaurant. Fun fact, I am in Germany and have never been there. 1200 GBP equals ~100 menues. Obviously it was the amount the restaurant wanted to bill which is quite suspicious to me. Yes, my credit card data could be abused, but in the end, the restaurant is responsible for the amount they want to charge my card with. This is not a big fancy restaurant and a single bill of 1200 GBP? Come on...

Came here with a friend and we both got the Doro wot with Injera. Some of the nicest food I’ve eaten in Brighton, the flavours are incredible and the chicken was cooked perfectly. Have come twice in 3 days because I liked it so much. The inside of the restaurant has nice decor and the staff are friendly and efficient. Will definitely be returning for more.

Great to see this long-standing restaurant (which I first visited in the mid 1990s) in Cricklewood open to dine-in guests again. My friend and I had the Abyssinian grill for two - a large variety of meats and vegetables served on injera flatbread, very filling. £15 each. The owner also provided an appropriate bottle of red wine to match it. Delicious!

We went as a four - two vegans, a vegetarian, and a meat eater who’s previous Ethiopian meal was in Heile Gebrselassie’s house. He said it was the best meal he’s had in years. The vegan platter was exceptional. Very very tasty samosas. We are on our way for round two right now!

There is so much to enjoy in Abyssinia restaurant and after trying it you will probably see yourself becoming a regular. The traditional Ethiopian cuisine is one that until a few months ago I had never experienced and after a visit to Abyssinia I became hooked. This is the kind of food that you’ll find yourself wanting again and again. The combination of spices along with the wonderful textures and fun way of eating- with the injura bread, is something that everyone should come and try at least once. This is happy food that warms the soul and satisfies the tastebuds. North London has some incredible restaurants and Abyssinia is on top of that pile because the food is lovely and the service is excellent.

Not a posh place by any means, but we chose it because we'd been given and very much enjoyed an Ethiopian cookery course - loved the food we cooked on the day, so decided to see what a restaurant had to offer. When we explained to the waiter that we didn't know what to choose, he kindly made us up a smaller version of their platter for 3, with lots of different dishes to try, all served on a large tray of injera bread. All the dishes were mega-tasty, but we decided that all in all we prefer the vegetarian dishes to the meat ones. When I told our waiter I was planning on cooking an Ethiopian meal for my daughter's birthday, he was massively helpful, giving me loads of cooking tips and even supplied two of the herbs that I hadn't been able to buy anywhere. We couldn't eat everything so he insisted on packing up our leftovers - far from the grudging way it might be done in a different establishment where they would resent you asking them to bag up anything you didn't eat, he was actually quite upset that we initially said we didn't want it! Service way over and above anything anyone could reasonably expect! It's an hour away from where we live, but we'll go back for sure next time we fancy a veggie Ethiopian meal. If you haven't tried this food by the way, make sure you do - it's a completely different flavour profile to anything else I've tried and I'm normally a big meat-lover, but these dishes are absolutely packed with flavour and you don't miss the meat at all.

We’ve been to Abyssinia 3 times now and will keep coming back! The food is incredible, we’ve had both the vegetarian and the mixed platter which is served on injera, with plenty of injera to spare. Been coming here for well over a decade. It has had ups & downs as the management changes. Think it’s on a good phase now. Once you get used to the style of eating (using hands with thin, flatbread-like injera), there’s good food with lots of new flavours to be enjoyed. Plenty of vegetarian choices. Wines mediocre and beers functional – you go there for the food.

I have given the restaurant many chances and they have been consistently disappointing. Today, Ethiopian New Year, as I walked by I thought it would be nice to get a Kitfo. Tricky food this one but I was desperate for a little bit of home. Ordered over the phone with clear instructions that I wanted ‘leb leb’ and ‘special’. Walked over after 20 min as suggested. For a New Year’s Day at 7pm there was one man with a young girl who shouted into the kitchen to get the waiter/chef’s attention for me. Out came a lady who had my order sitting to the side. I wished her a happy new year, asked for the bill and confirmed it was the ‘special’ (cottage cheese and spinach mix with chilli powder). She seemed surprised that was my order and headed back to the kitchen to correct the order only to promptly return to say they had run out of the cottage cheese mix. In an empty restaurant on New Year’s Day evening. After a long day at work I was not giving up so I took it home, it was ok, not as salty as as the last time but the injera was with burnt bits. Very dissatisfing dinner and this is my last time ever. If you’ve never had Ethiopian or Eritrean food this is not honest food nor is it even close to ok. Sorry to have to written this review but I hope they will improve.

We (Me and my wife) have lived in Cricklewood for over a year now. We had resigned ourselves to the fact that if we wanted a good meal not cooked at home we would have to leave our post code.THEN, whilst scouring the net we came across this place. All the reviews were glowing; the food, the service, the ambience...etc Well, how could we resist?! I booked a table and looked forward to it all week. This was going to be a real family treat.I was incorrect. As we crossed the threshold the young man that was playing with his phone behind the bar disappeared into the back. We stood around for a good 30 seconds before a lady came out to greet us. "Greet" - we weren't greeted like potential regular customers. More like we'd knocked on the door asking to use the facilities. Our "Hostess" stared at my wife, wide eyed, whilst she explained we had a booking. She pointed at all the empty tables and we took our cue to sit down somewhere. We'd been told over the phone a week earlier that the place was fully booked a mere 30 mins later. Hmm.We sat down, ordered drinks (No draught beer despite it being on the drinks list), perused the menu and mused over what we might have.None of our party had tasted Ethiopian food before but we felt, having read previous reviews, that the staff would guide us through the menu. This wasn't the case. Our waitresses simply didn't speak good enough English for us to communicate with them. We had to repeat everything we said and everything we ordered.Food:I had the Chicken Pozole soup for my starter. It is described as a Tortilla corn with red kidney soup. What I got was chunks of pre cooked chicken, sweetcorn and kidney beans in hot water. Utterly flavourless. Chicken chunks, sweetcorn, kidney beans and water. Foul.My sister had the "Sizzling" Chicken. It's just fried chicken and peppers. No seasoning or spices. Literally Chicken and Peppers. Can the management please tell me what is "Sizzling" about this dish?My wife had samosas as her starter. On the menus the samosas are described as being for two. What arrived was "Two" miniature, greasy triangles filled with grey meat. No garnish or sauce. We had the mixed combo for our main. We were all pretty hungry and sad after our starters but we had high hopes for this dish due to all the previous reviews. Our waitress plonked it on our table and started to walk off. I called to her, pointing at the platter, and asked;"We've never eaten Ethiopian food before. Could you please tell us about the various dishes on the platter?""This is the food of my country"(Yeah, I understand this is Ethiopian food)"Uh huh, but what are the different things on the plate? On top of the bread?"She shrugged and said "The meat? It's different stuff"We gave up there and then. We were trying food we'd never eaten before, being polite and respectful, and simply wanted to know what it was called and what it consisted of. Our waitresses could not be bothered. We also had to ask for cutlery and plates numerous times. By the time we had cutlery and plates most of the things on our mixed combo were cold. Do you eat it on plates? Do you use knives and forks? Nobody told us. Nobody advised us. Where is this warm friendly service we had heard so much about? We asked for the bill, waited 10 minutes for somebody to bring it over, paid it and left.Nobody was there to say goodbye as we walked out of the door. All the staff had been in the back most of the night.I'm honestly baffled in regards to the reviews of this place. I'm not sure what disappointed me more, the service or the food.Bland food and indifferent service. We won't be returning.

I visited this restaurant a number of times and find it so unique and welcoming...The taste of the food second to none....not only it is freshly prepared while you are waiting but also the ingredients are 100% authentic from its Ethiopian origin, the land of 13 months of sunshine with no artificially added flavors....Back in Ethiopia these sorts of food and ingredients are not just a day to day meal but the most favored food of the kings and queens of Ethiopia.....So, you should feel high and regard yourself with good spirit as you eat whatever you order. You wont regret it :) My favorites are Gored -Gored, Tibis , Kittfoo....and all vegetarian (social).....I cant wait to visit you again.....I recommend anyone to have the taste of this unique food from Ethiopia :)

My partner and I had fancied the idea of trying Ethiopian food and so decided tonight to try the Abyssinia for takeaway. Upon enquiring, the lady serving stated "yes, but no 'injera'" and was visibly irritated that we didn't seem to understand. I explained that we didn't understand and was told no bread. Fine we would have rice, no problem. A menu was handed over and after a few moments the lady asked if we were ready, as the menu was entirely new to us we were not, apparently further irritation to the hostess. We quickly made our decisions and the lady came to take our order. First issue, no lentil soup. OK, so the other soup. No soup. OK, so do you have avocado salad? Hesitant 'yes', quickly followed by a "Are you new?" Question. Great, I thought, she is going to give us some advice. She did, she said "There's a Chinese next door, wouldn't you like to go there". We got the message loud & clear and left.

The staff here are chatty, friendly and helpful - telling you what's what on the slightly mystifying menu and bringing you a glass of honey wine. Which, by the way, is a good way to defrost if it's cold outside. We followed the owner's advice and ordered a mixed platter for 2, which was colossal and delicious, with a nice, spicy mixture of meat, pulses and vegetarian. The platter is covered by a sourbread pancake and the dishes are atop. More pancake is used in lieu of cutlery to scoop up the dishes. That said, a knife and fork is provided should using fingers be not to your liking. The only improvement would have been if Ethiopian beers had been available instead of ubiquitous Stella and Bud. Overall, a great meal and good value dinner in a friendly atmosphere. Thank you !

Seeing it was lunch time and I needed a rest so I took to this restaurant. I was interested in ethiopian cuisine as I had only seen it on tv before, and was keen to try it. The owner gave me a reccomendation of what to eat, and had a little chat, and even put some music of youtube on the wall(no not nursery rhymes, but 1960s folk music) to please my child who wasnt keen to spend time there. The food was excellent and I really liked that it was served (to full experience) in a traditional way with injera bread and portions of everything. No idea why this restaurant is so highly rated as our experience was awful. Came one day last week for lunch, walked in and the entire place was empty, no staff anywhere to greet us or to seat us.We sat down anyway and waited 5 mins before a little old lady came out and gave us menus. She then spent the next 15 min on the phone while we waited for her to finish her call and take our order. She then took my 2 friends order , bizarrely she asked my friend if she was vegetarian when she had just ordered a beef dish???However when I was about to give her my order she walked off!!! No word, no apology, just walked off to get my friends drinks before even taking down my order! How bloody rude!!She looked very puzzled when we ordered and didn't write anything down. Thought she memorised the order, turns out she didn't even acknowledge anything we said, turns out she was the chef and not the waitress and couldn't speak or understand much English!!!25 mins after we arrived a man in his car came screeching to a halt outside and rushed in and asked us what we wanted to order, this was the waiter, and the little old lady was just pretending to take our order. So we had to go through the whole ordering process again!!!! However only 5 mins later our food arrived, which was suspiciously quick considering they were curries. Waiter then just dumped the lot onto the injera without even telling us which was which, I had to ask him what dish was what.Turns out it was all microwaved. Now I understand that most restaurants will cook in advance and reheat, that's fine but I don't expect cold, reheated 2 day old rice which was dry and hard. It's not that difficult to cook fresh rice each morning, especially as bad reheated rice can be dangerous.I barely touched my meal as it was disgusting and I've eaten ethiopian food before. Also they charge £3 for a can of coke, the same price they charge for a bottle of bud. I have never heard of any restaurant charging same price for soft drinks and alcohol. Especially as this place had plastic table cloths and resembled a greasy spoon not a restaurant. The only saving grace was the fact they discounted the bill by a few quid as the waiter saw just how annoyed/disappointed we were with the entire meal.WILL NEVER GO BACK OR RECOMMEND TO ANYONE, AVOID UNLESS YOU LIKE BAD SERVICE AND BAD FOOD.

Myself and my family picked this restaurant as it was recommended by Google, we made our way to this restaurant at around 14:12 yesterday afternoon. On arrival their welcoming and leading us to our table was strange as usual, as all Habesha people are kind of shy!! when it comes to customer greeting and welcoming. Anyway one gentleman came from outside and told us to sit any were and sat at the front a table of five. Whiting five minutes of arrival we made our order with one of our choice not been available (Zilzil-tibs). Just to mention their drink menu is nice and simple having said that their main menu looks like an album which contains of five to six pages food and drinks description. And very cold for room for a restaurant as my wife had to keep her coat on. Food came and all was great very tasty food, from Kitfo, Alicha Firfir to Beye-Aynetu which is vegetarian dish awesome. At first we were served by the owner as their main waitress didn't arrive on time, which then took over and showed her experience speed and attention to details. Everything went well above expectation, for a Sunday dinning it's very quite place. The quality and quantity of food is excellent in addition to their pricing which is affordable. In my case it's not affordability but food must taste great.Great place delicious food and good atmosphere .Till next time

First time eating here. The waiter and waitress attending us were welcoming and helped us navigate through their extensive menu, including plenty of meat based AND vegetarian dishes, all equally delicious. In fact, we ordered a half meaty-half vegetarian Combo for two, consisting in ten different spiced dishes served on a huge injera - a airy, savoury pancake - and complementary smaller injeras with which you can help yourself to the food.We were offered free samples of their traditional honey wine too. Food and 3 beersfor 29£.Will definitely come back to try more of their dishes!

I really enjoyed this restaurant. Firstly, I eat Ethiopian food a lot, so being in London I had to find some. I was very pleasantly surprised by the taste and the portions here. I would definitely recommend it.

Like with all Ethiopian restaurants in London, this place is very humble and unassuming. But it does serve some great food. The hosts are ever smiling and lovely people. We were lucky to get the delicious honey wine. There was a lot of choice on the menu but we went for something that allows us to sample most dishes. the meat dishes were lip smacking and so were the vegetarian ones. The injeras were fluffy and delicious. Despite the simple decor and ambience, the people and the food make this place worthy of a visit.

Despite the "humble" exterior (and, come to think of it, interior) this is a great place in Cricklewood. Food is delicious and plentiful and arrived very quickly. Service was welcoming and personal - will definitely make a return visit!

Abyssinia is one of those unprepossessing restaurants with a narrow, scruffy and peeling façade, located in a Cricklewood stretch of the Edgware Road that has seen better days, between a grotty Chinese takeaway and a workmen's greasy spoon that has been closed down forever. You may pass it daily but would never be tempted to pay it a visit. After all, whoever heard of Abyssinian cuisine?Having somewhat overdosed on my usual Indian haunts, I was tempted to try out Abyssinia by the unusual and totally unfamiliar menu, by the glowing and enthusiastic reviews on this and other websites, but mainly by the unusual and rather charming practice by the owners of thanking each and every reviewer for his/her opinion.I was greeted by the polite and amiable owner and a complementary glass of the local delicacy - honey wine. Incidentally, did you know that Ethiopia is the second largest exporter of honey in the world? Neither did I. The menu is vast, rich in both meat and vegetarian choices but only one single fish dish. Notwithstanding short English description of each dish, it is bewilderingly incomprehensible for the uninitiated. I stated my preference for meat dishes and liking for spice and left my culinary fate in the hands of the owner.I was served with the Meat Combo: a huge injera (gluten-free, yeast-free, sourdough pancake, with a unique, slightly spongy texture, made of Teff flour, traditionally served with Ethiopian stews) with chicken, lamb and beef stews in three piles, each with its unique sauce and a bowl of fluffy rice. Although the traditional way of eating is with fingers (tear a piece of injera to the size of about your palm, roll the torn piece over your choice of dish, wrap and then put the rolled injera with the sauce into your mouth), I did find that recoursing eventually to a fork made it a lot easier... Washed down with a delicious Ethiopian Amber beer with an unusual caramel flavour, the meats were delicious but I could have done with a pickle of sorts, or at least a simple tomato or cucumber salad for variety. Desert consisted of toasted injera (again) with organic honey, not dissimilar to but, regrettably, somewhat inferior to British pancake, Hungarian palacinka or French crepe suzette, which are more familiar to the European palate. As I was nursing the remnants of my beer and "chewing the cud" with the owner (as one does), the owner's charming wife appeared and extracted from me a promise to come again and try out other specialities. The bill came to a very modest £20.00 and worth every penny. I'll be back!

Great service - very attentive with a few surprising Ethiopian drinks thrown in as a gesture. The food was very tasty and well presented. They've live music on a Saturday in the basement so it would be well worth visiting then.

Reservation confirmed via Opentable, when we showed up the restaurant was closed! When we called the number on the website they said they'd had an event the night before and decided to open late that day. Thanks for telling me (and my starving young kids) before we drove across town especially for this meal. Really rude & unprofessional.

My first time trying Ethiopian food. Had the spiced minced beef with Injera- the flavours were a surprising treat for my palate. Love the food here, you can tell the owner has passion in his food. Love discovering this kind of place! :-)

Small restaurant in Cricklewood specialising in authentic Ethiopian cuisine ( no, nor did I) which was tasty and plentiful, but you did have to eat it with your fingers with a huge bread ( although probably not compulsory!)

My friend and i have literally just got back from spending 4 hours in this wonderful restaurant where the gorgeous staff fed us to the point of explosion, plied us with the fabulous traditional home brewed white wine and honey combo and talked with us like we were old friends. I LOVE ABYSSINIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I am vegan, my fiance is a carnivore and we can rarely find a place where we can both dine. I am so excited i have found a place he will love as well. This food is 100% authentic, it tastes the same if not better than what i had in Ethiopia...in fact its better than most food i have had in Africa (i am half Egyptian so i know my African food!) I love the fact you eat with your hands, the vegan combo is insanely good, they also do a chicken one and a lamb one i think (i may be wrong) the combo for 1 person is HUGE (i ate the lot...too good to waste) and is only £8!!!! They also do a sharing one for £25 (for 3 people) the vegan one is a selection of different lentil stews, potatoes, spinach, beetroot etc. It is served with either rice or on the gluten free pancake type bread so you would obviously use the bread as a type of spoon (bit like foul madamas and pitta in Egypt) My friend had the chicken and said it was like nothing she had before 'OMG this is amaaaaazing' to quote her :) My friend and i are learning sign language and have a big exam coming up so we spent an hour or so practicing and the lovely staff Solliman and Yemen (I'm sorry i know i spelled your names wrong) wanted us to teach them and took a genuine interest in us. They are kind, gentle, sensational chefs, 110% accommodating and family orientated. They were never too busy to talk to us.....We had the best service!Abyssinia has a downstairs area which i am planning to book for a party as there is a live Ethiopian band that plays from 11pm to 3am and the wonderful owner said they would continue to serve food until then as well. They also said they will teach us traditional Ethiopian dancing hahaha cant wait! All i can say is do not hesitate to book. This restaurant has all the charm of real Africa. Thank you guys we will see you very soon and will spread the word that Abyssinia is absolutely a diamond in the rough...... oh directions wise, go to kilburn st (jubilee line) turn left when you come out the station and simply walk in a straight line for about 9 mins, restaurant is on the left hand side of the road (the same side of the road you will be on)Kate xxxxxxxx

I hadn't tried Ethiopian food until this evening... found Abyssinia on TripAdvisor while staying at the Crown Moran in Cricklewood - it's only a 5 minute walk away. Went for dulet and gored gored, served on injera with extra injera rolls on the side. And a berele of tej (honey wine) too! A unique experience - very interesting food, a huge edible sourdough bread "plate" combined with beautifully seasoned beef, and no cutlery required! Service was with a smile, pleasant and friendly. Recommended.

I'd never had Ethiopian food before, but the waitress was so enthusiastic and helpful, suggesting all manner of things to try. A free glass of their homemade honey wine was welcome and delicious, leading me to get a traditional flask of it. The food was absolutely wonderful and extremely filling. The home-roast coffee (served with popcorn!) was the perfect end to the meal.

The outside of the restaurant looks off-puttingly like a cheap takeway: ignore that and get inside. You won't regret it.

Abyssinia is not what you would expect as a top 200 restaurant in a city with 18,500 places to choose from. It looks shabby from the outside, the inside looks marginally better, and the wait staff speaks broken english. But that's where you have to trust TripAdvisor and stick to the ratings. I will not rate it a 5 because I only hand one or two of those out a year, but it is a solid 4. The food was wonderful! Even better, though I have not been to Ethiopia (I have been in Africa, and eaten Egyptian food, and norther Sudanese food very recently). Anyway, the staff was not well versed in direct communication, but they were VERY friendly, understanding and information on the dishes we selected. The price was more than reasonable as well (we left a tip of 100%). Try this place if you are in London.

I have tried many MANY Ethiopian restaurants and this one is by far the best in London. I took my whole family here, every one enjoyed it even though none had tried Ethiopian before. The service was amazing and the staff were so friendly and welcoming. We had the vegan combo plate and the mixed combo plate, honey wine, Ethiopian coffee (need to order this 20 mins in advance due to the special preparation but well worth it) and honey roasted injera for dessert. The owners showed us around the rest of the restaurant and the garden, which looked like it would be lovely in the summer. Over all this place is amazing and I am so happy we found it. I can't wait to go back :)

I discovered this place by pure chance walking past a few days ago.I had no clue to Ethopian or Eritrean food so thought I'd glance at the menu and was surprised to see a separate large section for Vegetarian and Vegan food so thought I'd have to give it a go.We went on a Sunday evening where there was a table of 4 already in. It took a few minutes for the waitress to come out of the kitchen and seat us which did iritate my girlfriend a bit.The waitress however was very friendly. She recommended the salad and somasa for starters and the Chefs veggie special for 2 and the Ethiopian beer.I'm not much of a drinker and not a huge bear fan but it was palatable and the girlfriend liked it.The samosa starter came out, it was nice but sadly not cooked all the way through and still cold inside but thankfully not frozen and seemed fresh inside. The main came out with the salad. The main was impressive to look at...it came out on an edible bed of fermented bread much like a pancake. It had a selection of lentils, greens and vegetable dishes and a bowl of rice and a basket of the fermented bread.I'm a big eater but that was very filling and very well priced and good value.Inside can do with some character but it looked like it had a nice garden area to but we didn't have a look at it properly. It had some kind of Ethopian pop music playing to which I got into. All in all a good experience at a good price. Will be back.
