I've known this shop for decades and have been coming on and off since I moved away. The food is very average now and was better a few years ago. This time I chatted to the boss who seems pleasant enough. But I seem to get lots of chip bits instead of whole chips. The battered goods are very average and the prices have crept up too. You can find better shops, but if do come here, you are better off not to bother the boss with 'idle' chit chat.

Wont be going back again in a hurry ..Had fish & chip special .slivers of greasy chips & fish was thick greasy batter fish was dried out.

Best fish and chips in the area, hands down! Never had a bad meal from this traditional chippy. Staff are always friendly and helpful and the cod is out of this world! There's often a queue of people lining up outside and that's usually a good sign... I'd rather grab a portion of their cod and chips from here than go eat in a posh, overpriced restaurant! Highly recommended! Happy to say that the cod and chips is just as good as ever. It's been a while since the first bit of this review, but having treated myself to a fantastic portion of the best cod in the area on my way home from work this evening (with the "small" chips), it's STILL the best. Hands down. The service is always friendly and that battered cod has always been amazing. I even got change from a tenner!

Amazing chip shop, today was my first time going here and the food was amazing. I ordered a regular Chips which were outstanding 10/10. The employees there were very welcoming and where very helpful. The customer service was incredible as i asked for vinegar before salt and they made the chips to absolute perfection. I didn't have cash on me at the time and they gave me a different option on how to pay they allowed me to do bank transfer. Honestly this is one of the best chip shops i have ever visited. Would 100% recommend to others.

Great chippy. First time going there and was well welcomed and customer interaction from the employees were amazing. The chips were served quickly and was hot for the way back. The chips have amazing taste and should definitely be visited by more and great place to eat for a dinner.

Monday lunch time, closed. CLOSED on a Monday lunch time. CLOSED. WHY????? Must be the only chip shop in the world that’s closed on a Monday lunch time. WHY???? Had to get a phucking sandwich from lidl instead. 💩

Food was delicious and hot. Plenty for money. Staff was friendly will definitely be our go to take away from now on.

New owner needs to smile and go bk to the old ways now the chips are greasy and leaves a layer of lard in your mouth the boxes are cardboard at least the girls that work there are polite and friendly

Whenever i would be in Walsall I would make sure to get some food from here. Unfortunately it has been taken over and Charlie doesn’t own it anymore. Food was terrible, shop was empty, used to be really busy before. Won’t be returning. Wish Charlie the previous owner all the best.

The cod was overcooked...had to throw most of it in the bin.

Horrible experience. Rude staff. Under new management I was told by the owner. Don't go there. The quality of food has deteriorated and there are better places in Walsall to eat. My recommendation is, go at your own peril and face the consequences of wasting money and the service you will receive.I for sure will not go there again.

Had 5 different meals all was hot food was delicious would recommend this fish shop to everyone. Very clean manager sandy was lovely and polite. Staff was lovely too

A far cry from the old days of awards & recognition. Greasy chips, kebab meat that looks like it was cut with a chainsaw & take what you're given from the hotplate. No choosing the one that's cooked just the way you fancy!

Changed hands, now poorer quality

Been using Ablewell Chippy since I moved to Walsall over 17 years ago.. never had a bad meal or received poor customer service. Always amazing and always cooked well. This is seriously how a fish and chip shop should be. The prices are reasonable too. Well done ablewell :)

Probably the best chippy in Walsall. Ordered haddock, which came in perfect crispy batter with no soggy batter internally, good fillet size too. Had normal size portion of chips, which are cooked to perfection. Wish I'd tried a small portion of chips as the portion sizes are generous. 5 ***** rating

The quality and standards have dropped through the floor.. was the best chippy in walsall but since they've started doing phone collection that has become a priority .. 1 person in queue confront of me..had to wait 25 minutes to finally get served.. nothing special ordered only chips roe fishcake... totally put me off future visits. 2/10 and that's being kind..

Best Chippie in Walsall by far. Everyone claims that their local chip shop is the best but sorry they are wrong. This one isnt even local for us anymore but we still travel so we do not miss out.

Went on Friday night always the busiest chip shop night. I waited patiently in line for my lamb doner. 2 customers in front of me also had lamb doner so the kebab really did need to be left to cook and brown however they decided to serve non browned meat to me. I thought maybe it would be okay but no - I will never let that happen again. I don’t know if it was responsible for some stomach problems I had later? So please cook your kebab well next time! Chips were a bit under cooked too.

I loved this shop but not no more. My mum don't eat pork and I was told, they fry everything in the same oil. If you don't eat pork or other meats, my recommendation is that you don't eat from here. I felt anger within me and we all know if you don't ask you will eat whatever is being given to you. If you eat everything then it's a good fish and chips shop. Good luck and always ask dont be shy to. This goes for everywhere you go.

On way to a meeting witj work colleagues and decided we were hungry. Our meeting was in Walsall so we pulled in onto the main street and sae this chippy by Lidls. Plenty of parking on the side carpark, we were greeted by two lovely girls behind the counter and then who I thought was the boss. Great choice on the menu and specials board. I chose the chicken curry on chips and my colleague chose roe on chips with curry sauce on top. It come to only £5!! We both enjoyed our chippy before we went to our meeting. Definitely one if the better chippies in Walsall 😊

Someone said I waited over 25 minutes fir sausage and chips and tikka meat ,well.you must have gone at peak time which is between 5pm _8pm and as a local i know its one if the top 5, fish and chip shops in walsall so dont go at that time... go elsewhere and get stale food warmed over from last night if you want fresh food clean food its well worth the wait ,ive been there and waited 30 minutes for fresh haddock and chips and theres a queue of 15 _20 people waiting in the shop and outside in the cold but hell yeah its worth it oh and ive trained at catering college .

I've been here a couple of times now and I've never been disappointed. The family run store is small, cosy and clean with always friendly and helpful staff. Food is always hot and fresh, everything from a battered sausage to the cheeseburger. Do not come here without having a potato scallop - the best of its kind I've ever eaten in a chippy! The batter alone is crispy, light and flavourful. If calories didn't exist, I'd eat here for every meal. Keep it up!!

We needed a quick tea as we hadn't time to cook in or eat out at a restaurantThe service was good, the staff were friendly.. The fish was cooked perfectly with nice crispy batter and the hips were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was freshly cooked as we arrived

I stayed in a near by hotel where food was crap, Hungry i took to the street and ended up here, Decent Menu with lots of options but i most enjoyed chips, really fresh top grade potatoes

I was not a big fan of this type of food ... until I discovered Ablewell Fish Bar. The fish is perfect, with a slightly crisp batter. The chips are very tasty and aromatic. Kebab is pure poetry:) Large portions, served by a competent and friendly team. It is true that sometimes you have to wait for your turn little bit longer than in other places like this - but it is worth it!

best place to get your fats fish and chips a little expensive but its worth it as it's better than the other chips shops around

depending on who serves you the portions are very poor and if you like chilli sauce you either get a squirt or the whole bottle !

Being here a few times.and I must say the fish is absolutely beautiful.nice and tender and is proper cod not like some places.the only thing I can say the chips are not the best ab it greasy at times.so I just get the fish.and get the chips from Broadway chippy.

Myself my husband and daughter live a stones throw away wev visited many times very friendly staff beautiful food everytime and generous portions for the low price they charge will always be one of our favourite chip shops:)

Long standing Family business... Very friendly Staff!! (A lot of regulars..) The Food is without doubt is exceptional!!! Sometimes the queue ends up on the pavement but waiting for your Prize is not an issue with the constant high quality served!! (Still licking my lips!!) The children know only one place when it comes to Fish n Chips, Kebabs etc..... Top Dollar!!!!!!

I have lived in the rear for quiet along time and have been going to this fish and chip bar regularly. I've always found the service to be brilliant and the food fantastic. The family run business is the reason why I would recommend anybody that likes good, fresh fish and chips to visit it.If he is around say his to Charlie he is always happy and willing to talk to you.I hope anybody visiting Ablewell Fish Bar enjoys it as much as my family do.

This place used to be great and even boasts an old cutting on it's wall giving a rave review....but not any more.The staff are more interested in talking to each other than customers, the portions are small and they frequently run out of what you want, or serve up chips dripping in fat.There are plenty of other options in Walsal, Miss this one.

Charlie, the convivial owner leads a very friendly team. Fish and chips are excellent and massive portions. Meal deals good value as well.

Charlie and his staff are lovely. They get to know their customers which is nice. The shop is lovely and clean, and the food is great, with good size portions.

After reading the good reviews on tripadvisor i though i'd go and visit, only to recieve cold chips. When i spoke to the person serving I was told 'no one else is complaining', and did nothing about it. WOULD DEFINITELY not go in here again.

Now this is the first time I've ever been SO impressed by a simple fish and chips dinner that I've felt the need to review a place like this! My friends and I were debating a) what to have for tea, and b) where to go to get it. The first question was easy enough - I quite fancied fish and chips as I hadn't had it for quite some time, but the moment I said "fish" my friend said "Ablewell".No messing around. And he was right. The fish was out of this world! Big flakes of chunky cod in the most incredible batter. Even the chips were a major step up from the majority of the fast food style eateries! The portion size was very impressive too. I struggled to finish mine, and I was hungry! If it wasn't for the help of a couple of eager dogs, I might not have finished all my chips, but the fish was the best I've had in probably 25 years and that was all mine! The next time I get a hankering for a nice bit of battered cod, I know where to come! Highly recommended.

There may be better fish and chip shops within 3 miles of here but I have yet to find them. If you want fish and chips and are near Walsall town center then this is the place to go. It also does pies, sausages and roe if that is what you are after. The kebabs or pittas and wraps also looked really nice and were being bought and eaten with gusto by a multinational cast of happy customers.To cap it all the people working behind the counter offered cheerful, friendly and very professional service to all their customers. A really peasant take away place. Do visit ... Excellent value!The only better chippy I've found in the Midlands is in Bewdley and the chips are stone cold when I get them home (grin)

As chip shops go, this one is really good - given that we are, literally, about as far from the sea as is possible in the UK, the fish is excellent. Service is always good too. The chips are not the best I have ever had but they are good. As I have said above, this is a chip shop not a restaurant but you can pre-order food by 'phone. Fairly obviously, there are no seats or tables or anything like that here. It is situated quite near Walsall town centre and there is a handy car park next door to the chip shop.

Our weekly fish and chip dinner on Fridays would not be the same without these great fish and chips. This is definitely the best chippie in Walsall. Very reasonable prices You will queue but worth the wait.
