Stopped off here for a bite to eat before going to the Theatre Royal. We had small plates between us which were excellent.We even had some lovely deserts,Cheesecake and Apple and Almond Tart. The service was great and the food came quickly. All the staff here were very friendly We will certainly call here again as we visit St Helens regularly.

Once again excellent service and hospitality from the Abbey..we came with friends table of 4 I had a burger and chips..my friends had fish and chips..on arrival the food was outstanding the fish was huge as for the burger bun was hot and fresh the burger itself was so juicy chips nice and crisp..the food was excellent hat's off to the chefs and staff..will definitely be returning

What an absolute gem this pub is! The beer garden was lovely and well maintained and the inside of the pub looked so lovely and cosy. We ordered our food at the bar as we’d decided to sit outside and it came in no time 👌 The staff were attentive and lovely, but the food. The food was amazing! Honestly, it’s been a while since I’ve been so pleasantly surprised with a pubs food but it was delicious. So much so that we’ve decided that this is now our ‘go to’ place to eat and drink with friends and family.

Amazing roast dinner at The Abbey!! The yorkshire puddings were huge, delicious and crispy roast potatoes and the beef just melted in your mouth! Absolutely delicious and a great selection of veg too! All the staff are lovely and friendly which was great, well done!!

Sat & Sunday this is an edited review as I appear to have not scored the 5 I intended to so my apologies Having previously given the Abbey a bad review it is only fair to make a further comment in light of changes that appear to have been made. Having had a long day up a ladder on saturday a pint was needed so we went to the Abbey our local around 4.30. Lovely atmosphere and places for the casual drinker to enjoy the good beer they serve. That is how we want to use our local and it was one of my previous gripes that all seating was being reserved. That no longer appears to be the case. We booked in for food on Easter Sunday with family . Once again a lovely atmosphere and good food and service. Jill does the meet and greet as you walk in which immediately gives a welcoming vibe. The beer garden at the front has been tended to and looks cared for and the interior of the pub is spotless so credit to the cleaner and the staff. My wife and I came in for a lovely Sunday roast today.. friends of ours recommended the Abby so we thought we would try it out.. Honestly just wow for start to finish ..we were greeted by the General Manager ( Gill) who took us to our table, outstanding customer service from all the staff ( clearly well trained By Gills Management team )once comfortable I ordered our drinks and roast dinner although the Abby was busy we expected a waiting time..honestly the food arrived within 20 minutes ..the food was hot the Yorkshire pudding we're huge the best I've ever seen honestly the roast dinner was absolutely delicious thanks to Jack for his outstanding customer service.. clearly we will be back next week for another delicious roast dinner..thanks to Gill and her outstanding team for making our first time at the Abby a remarkable one..We will definitely recommend the Abby for food, drinks and perfect hospitality and outstanding atmosphere

Hi. We went for Xmas lunch at 3pm. Could not believe my eyes or ears when we walked in. The bar was very very busy rammed actually, so the noise level was dreadful . Not AT ALL the experience of previous years when the bar was closed to the public. I agree 100% in every aspect of what a previous reviewer has written on this subject, and also what he said re the food. I found it ok. The bread with salmon starter was indeed v hard and unable to cut, and the Yorkshire pudding overwhelming . However the main problem was being open to the public !

Came here for Christmas lunch yesterday and the food was excellent with amazing portions , staff were so lovely and welcoming. Amazing atmosphere would definitely recommend eating here, will 100% be back.

This was our 4th Christmas day spent at The Abbey, St. Helens for Christmas Dinner and in my opinion by far the worst. Our Party of 6 were Grandparents, Parents & Grandchildren aged 16 through to 67 and we were all very disappointed. In previous years the pub bar wasn't open to the public and everyone eating were seated in the dining room areas. This year the bar was open and our party was seated in the bar which wasn't ideal with people sat at high tables having drinks and over looking us whilst we were eating. The ladies toilets had a terrible smell of urine and the whole experience in the pub didnt reach the high standards of previous years? The service was slow and the Christmas dinner including the starters were awful & the sweets were only average.The breads on the starters seemed stale and hard to cut, the dinners seemed to be just threw on the plates with some having red cabbage, sprouts, carrots one roast potato if you were lucky two and pigs without blankets and then a "spatchcock" effect Yorkshire pudding just plonked on top of everything as if to hide the food underneath with a '"slice" of gravy on top of that. It was a very disappointing experience considering it cost £64.95 per person and compared to previous years the standards had definitely slipped and it was a complete waste of our time and money and that is why we won't be returning guests next year.

Wow Full English Breakfast. If you haven't been for breakfast then your missing out. I actually don't see the point of going to a small café now when you can have a better cooked breakfast in a spacious cosy pub. Would be a great place to meet up, as there's plenty of seating and large tables for big groups . Opens at 9.00am for breakfasts and there something for everyone. This was our 2nd time for breakfast on the way back from a dog walk ( Dog Friendly Pub ) and it was really good, you will not be disappointed if you visit for breakfast or for any other food. We eat here of a evening and the atmosphere, decor, staff and food is always GOOD. Highly recommended The Abbey Pub , Mark

Went to the Abbey for a Xmas meal and meet up with friends 1st and last time for me. The turkey was cooked to perfection, but stuffing ball was so hard it shot across my plate as I tried to cut into it. The roast potatoes were hard I only ate 1 1/2 , cranberry sauce was like a jelly and tasteless. Yorkshire pudding huge only ate a quarter of that. I had Xmas pudding and believe me I’ve had bigger biscuits I actually thought it was a joke in a huge dish. My friend ordered beetroot wellington (vegan version) it was dry Garvey served with it was cold and congealed. All for £17-99 per person. Plus drinks are extra.

After using this pub pretty regularly to meet up with friends and always being happy with the food and service I'm not sure we'll be back any time soon. Several of our mains were served lukewarm. Mine was actually cold so I asked them to do something to heat it up. 10 minutes later it came back. Chips had obviously been refried - fair enough - but the plate with the chicken, flatbread and SALAD!! had been stuck in the microwave rendering the flatbread to a hardened inedible disc and the salad completely ruined. As most of the table had by now almost finished their meals I gave up and picked at what I could salvage. No one came to clear our table - we ended up clearing it ourselves onto an adjacent one. No one came to ask if we wanted the deserts we'd ordered earlier served - we had to ask a couple of times at the bar for them. They eventually arrived 90 minutes after we'd finished our mains and again they were lukewarm bordering on cold (sticky toffee puddings and cherry tarts). On the plus side the staff were friendly but we were really disappointed with the food.

Lovely family meal. Excellent service. We were looked after very well. We had Sunday lunch. Very nice Yorkshire pudding. Followed by tasty deserts. Will be returning again very soon.

Lovely place to eat! I the staff are absolutely amazing too… I had a server called grace who was so kind and very friendly and made my experience at the abbey 10x better, always checking up and when asked for things brought them speedily. Couldn’t have had a nicer time for my first time going… will definitely be visiting again!

Best fish & chips we’ve had in a long time, 1st time in the Abbey and will be back had the special fish chips mushy peas with tartar sauce And a drink for £9:95 it was piping hot and the fish crunchy batter plenty of chips BEAUTIFUL. Best pub for food & drink in this area , ate here the other night and we had 3 courses and a drink for £19.25 and it was outstanding (don't know how they do it ?) Quality fresh prepared/cooked food, well presented and extremely friendly/helpful staff. The food/drinks here are great, however after I visited this week I was really disappointed by the covid measures they have in place. The system doesn’t work, you have to queue up for the bar, one queue goes out through the main entrance so you end up having groups of people gathering waiting for a table in a small space. Why they don’t have a scan and order to your table in place (like other pubs of the same chain!?) I do not know. Then when your food comes they put it on to a table which you collect it from, which would be fine if this table wasn’t also used to put dirty plates/cups on from all the surrounding tables. I don’t think I saw anybody clean it once either! If they want to use this system, have a table for clean things and one for dirty, it’s really not that hard.

we came at 5pm ordered at 5:30 and some of our meals only came an hour and half later and the rest even later. the service was terrible and they forgot meals and brought the starter out first when we asked for it to be brought with the meals. people came ordered and left before we got all our meals. we didnt enjoy the food because it ruined our night and left us stressed. we wouldn’t recommend

Visited with family for dinner, lovely pub, fantastic food, cant fault surroundings. However, the queuing system they have devised is shocking, perhaps 20 to 30 mins queue to get a pint, dinner went half cold and disappointment set in. Management, sort it out, shocking wait for drinks without any table service.

You cannot book here (even for large parties, so decided to go early (live football on in all rooms) so went at 1.30pm and it was easy to get a table, but most tables were occupied by 3pm.Food and drinks a bit more expensive than the public house opposite ( if fact my wife only drinks coke as the wine prices are far too high). No provision to start a tab, all orders paid for as ordered at the bar.Very tasty food, especially the starters, and very generous amounts. Dogs allowed inside (even whilst dining) which might not please some but the ones we saw were well behaved.Will return soon but not our "favourite eatery".

This was a first visit since refurb. Visited with a friend for tea tonight on the eat out to helpout scheme. Not a visit particularly for the offer but for a catch up with a mate but bonus it was as the meal was half price. Didnt wait too long for a table although it was busy on arrival. Seated within 30 minutes. Pub decor, really nice. Staff pleasant and attentive. All social distance measures adhered to. Both opted for Surf N Turf with a few wines each. Steak done lovely, wine nice. No complaints and will definately be visiting again as was much better than expected.

This was the first date night my Husband and I had been on since lockdown restrictions were lifted. Both a bit apprehensive but decide to go to the Abbey being a pre lockdown favourite of ours.They have got the set up absolutely spot on to enable social distancing. It was spotless , comfortable and retained that friendly welcoming atmosphere we have always been so used to seeing. The lady serving us did not stop for breathe - she was on top of everything and could not do enough for the diners. The food was delicious and came of in good time. Menu options were varied.Well done The Abbey!!

Since coming out of lockdown I was looking for a pub where social distancing was in place. I have to say the Abbey has got this perfect, the staff are friendly & very accommodating. Kathryn & Emma have catered for are needs each time. The set up is perfect where you can sit inside or outside in comfort & still distance yourself. Well done

We had a meal here for my sister's birthday.The food was beautiful and the staff were so lovely,kind and gracious.My parents took their labrador and within five minutes a member of staff came to us with a big bowl of water for her.I can't recommend this place highly enough the staff are so so lovely and the food is out of this world.We will definitely be going back to the Abbey.

How Fabulous, as my other half is a Bury native we just had to have the Bury Black pudding and bacon fritter with a poached egg! Heaven!! If you're here for a bite to eat this is a must have starter. The egg popped perfectly covering the fitter, the taste was amazing and cooked to perfection, very pleased!The staff here are absolutely lovely and nothing is too much trouble!Well done staff, chef and management of the newly beautifully refurbed Abbey.

Reader of this review to select own rating as I'm perplexed. I've selected mid range rating because it's a requirement of the review to rate.With relatives visiting from Ireland we decided to have a family get together and opted for a meal at The Abbey which was duly booked. 20 family members travelled from Ireland, Chester, Widnes, Whitehaven as well as a few from St Helens. Other friends would join us later to watch England v Ireland 6 Nations match.With the formality of the meal over and the distraction of the rugby at an end we settled in to have a chat and a drink.It was at that point we were informed that we would have to vacate as the tables were booked for a subsequent party. There being no other tables or areas available in the busy pub we were forced, unapologetically, to leave.Apart from one or two hiccups on arrival, which were sorted out promptly, everything was great up to that point, food, service, surroundings all great. We chose The Abbey becuase of it's great reputation and because it was where we all met as a family the day our mother died.As the organiser of the day, the bad taste in my mouth will take some time to dissipate. I didn't want to write a negative review so I'll leave you to make up your own mind.The historic, traditional cry from the landlady "we've had your money now push off home" comes to mind and is almost appropriate here.

Lovely place. I have been twice now, once with a friend for tea and then lunch with my two children. The staff and management are very polite, helpful and friendly. The food was delicious on both occasions and the kids loved their meals. Looking forward to a trip up the road to this place in summer as I would have never have known there was space for that hidden beer garden :) Glad to have another nice local that is very welcoming.

I visited the Abbey in January having not visited for many years. I was more than pleasantly surprised with the improvement in the decor. So much so that I had lunch there in February. The staff were very courteous and polite and very helpful. Furthermore the food was delicious and I will regularly go there for lunch from now on to sample the rest of the menu.

A brilliantly presented public house / restaurant at the heart of St Helens, which has undergone excellent refurbishment to its highest standards. Their excellent array of food and beverages are outstanding. The locals are always friendly and a pleasure to be around. A warm and professional welcome is always guaranteed at the Abbey. A lot of money has been spent refurbishing this pub and is 100000% worth it...the food is reasonably priced and excellent value and very tasty..definitely worth many visits (we did).the atmosphere is very relaxed and superbly clean and tidy....15/10...

Just got back from a Valentine's meal with my wife at the Abbey. As usual great venue, great food, great staff - what more can you ask for.

Came across the Abbey by fluke we were looking for somewhere else got fed up when lost saw the Abbey said that's it I'm avin a pint well what a blessing lovely pub/eating house since the lost incident we av been every weekend and av eaten every time can only say the staff are really professional the food excellent the decor very good lovely background music and played at a volume where you can also av a conversation amongst yourselves without shouting all in all a nice place to visit for food and I didn't hear any foul language (credit to the management) I have one complaint that is it's not a cheap place drink or eat but it is good value but is it really necessary to charge 50p for a splash of soda are you not making enough profit there are not may if any charge for soda water!!!!!

Really good food. Braised beef was delicious. A bit peppery but I liked it.My husband had the hanging skewer (fillet steak) - very nice,with salad and chips.

Excellent service. Food was well presented, cooked beautifully and hot. Drinks were spot on. Overall a great experience and will be going again and can highly reccommend.

I won't be eating in The Abbey again. Wish I had read the revues before going in. My food had to be sent back as it was lukewarm probably because it was served on a cold plate. The peas served with the meal were like bullets and really not inspiring either. I did get an apology and a hotter meal. The selection of ales was good, the wine a bit on the pricey side, the menu similiar to Wetherspoons but pricier.

We went in at 5.00 on sunday evening liverpool and Everton were playing so we waited till just after 6 2 order food only 2 be told they had closed the kitchens as no food left I understand they had been busy but the menus were all still out on the tables a big disappointment

The pub has just apparently had a refurbishment and is nicely decorated and comfortable.

Had not booked so decided to go early (live football on in all rooms) and good job we did..!! Half full at noon...we sat down at a comfortable table, but most table occupied half an hour later.

1st visit was with family 2nd visit was with friends. 3rd visit was with family. Each time has been really enjoyable with good food, lovely surroundings & excellent value for money
