28 Market Place in South Somerset

We dined at 28 Market Place on Friday March 31st, a birthday meal. We were delighted by both the food and the service. The menu is reassuringly small, but sufficiently varied, and both my pickled mackerel starter and lamb rump main were very well cooked and presented, as were my wife’s linguine and cod. .Though certainly not cheap, it was fairly priced and good value, and considerably less expensive than the only plausible (though excellent) local rival in Bruton. Overall, it was a pleasurable experience, and we would be delighted to come again.

What an amazing find! We came for brunch on the recommendation of family and friends and were not disappointed. Through indecision my husband and I shared the croque madam and the sourdough with bacon, avocado, tomato chutney (and an extra egg)... both delicious. The coffee was really good and the staff were extremely friendly. The management, who very kindly came to talk us through the menu and the changes that they had made, were great and I have no doubt that with the local community behind them will make a real success of the business. We have been back already for lunch and now trying to get back for supper!

Enjoyed the ambience , the bustle. However , disappointed with the dirty table, slow service and lack of attention. Perhaps short of staff. Food however, was delicious.

This restaurant never fails to impress and next I would like to experience the Sunday lunch too which I have heard is outstanding. We enjoyed a wonderful meal - the pork in particular was exceptional. They have a really good wine list, but nice to begin with one of their cocktail's. I love the attentive but unobtrusive service and the fact you aren't rushed. This makes for a relaxing and very enjoyable evening.

We visited this venue with friends and were not disappointed at all. From the moment we arrived, we were very well looked after. The menu choices were far too good, and made choosing very difficult. Would very much recommend a visit to No. 28, truly, you won’t regret it. Lovely atmosphere and very nicely presented. Will definitely return.

The food was absolutely delicious, a perfect combination of something different and something accessible. After visiting HOLM we were apprehensive in regards to the food being accessible but we were blown away by the flavours. Service was very professional but our server Charlotte made us feel like we were friends visiting. I can’t wait to go back to see what else the talented chef can come up with, and to be welcomed into such a peaceful comfortable place. Really thrilled. Thank you

I have eaten here several times over the past few years but was disappointed on a recent visit. The waiting staff were excellent and the food fantastic but it seemed that family members, or friends, of the new managers were in and the atmosphere was awkward for the staff trying to maintain professionalism. The tacky trinkets which are a new addition lowered the tone of the the previously “classy” ambience. It has lost the friendly and welcoming vibe of past visits.

We were celebrating Grandmothers birthday. The food was delicious, a talented chef and wonderfully presented. I was impressed by the service and attentiveness of the staff, without being intrusive - with well spaced tables creating a great ambiance and wonderful meal. What was particularly wonderful was not feeling hurried and being able to enjoy each course thoroughly, the wine menu was well chosen and I could not fault our evening.

We were sadly disappointed. The chef is clearly talented but lots of bits just let them down. Our drinks took a long time, we still didn’t have them when our starter arrived. My starter was cold. It wasn’t very warm in the restaurant and it didn’t feel very Christmassy. We would go back try again as it felt like a tough night for them.

We had high expectations of this place, given the excellent reviews , the menu descriptions and the prices charged. Others have enjoyed good flavours. Our meals were notably lacking in flavour. The lighting is so low and the menu so difficult to read that many customers, including those at adjacent tables with young eyes, not just the older customers, used the torches on their phones to read it. And we couldn't see what we were eating which is a shame if the restaurant place importance on presentation. One of our party had the vegetable tart. Unless a tarte tatin, I expect a tart to be a shortcrust base or similar. , whereas this was a hefty slab of puff pastry which might have been acceptable in a garden centre cafe. People at a nearby table brought a small dog in with them which was made comfortable on the restaurant seating. I find this totally unacceptable in a restaurant of any type. The staff were, apart from a clumsy welcome, pleasant enough but very young and would benefit from a bit more training and supervision.

Equal to the best meal I’ve ever tasted, and far and away the best in Somerset. I thought I’d book somewhere special for our anniversary, and we weren’t disappointed. The minestrone soup with aged Parmesan and crab toast starter was incredible, as was the organic pork, greengage, hispi cabbage and sage & onion. My wife plumped for the Cornish saddle of lamb, confit carrots, potato galette, with sheep’s yoghurt - again, wonderful flavours. Finally, I had the 40% milk chocolate, salted caramel caramel, hazelnut and milk ice cream. The taste of each element was sublime. My wife had 2 scoops of raspberry and 1 of mango(?) sorbet, which melted in the mouth and were exceptional. All in all a wonderful evening, with excellent service in a relaxed atmosphere. Sensational This is truly the best place and meal we have had this year. Phenomenal is an understatement. The staff were amazing, perfect level of attentiveness. Wine was glorious but the food was utterly outstanding. That first mouthful and the taste explosion will stay with us for a long, long time. Highly recommended and we are definitely coming back.
