1903 in Doncaster

We had been here once before under a previous management, when we thought the food was A. a bit pricey and B. a bit pretentious. Yesterday's experience was very different. The outside area when we walked up from the car park needed a bit of a clean, especial as the compound for litter is in full view and was full to the top of cartons and other rubbish. It wasn't a good first impression but we forgot all about it when greeted by a lovely member of staff, (Maisie?) who was very welcoming. Our table was in one of the small dining areas off the main bar area. We had a little wander around after we had eaten and the whole downstairs is very nicely decorated, clean and comfortable. Every member of staff we met was friendly, helpful and able to deal with our requests. We ordered two starters and mentioned that the third member of our party might be allowed to share. As a result, the waitress brought a third plate. The starters - fish cakes and ham terrine - were very nice indeed, although, in retrospect, I should have just had a main course, as the portions were quite generous. All three of us had the Barnsley Chops for a main and they did not disappoint. However, they were served in a shallow bowl and I would have preferred a proper dinner plate. It made cutting the meat from the bone quite difficult. We also had a side order of cauliflower cheese and it was enough for all three of us to share. Everything was very nicely cooked and presented. Dessert was the hazelnut cheesecake, which was pleasant, if a little bland. Very good coffee the end the meal. All in all, a very nice experience and I would recommend 1903 for a special lunch out.

No Uncomplicated means of refusing cookies Tomato soup with what looked like several thin slivers of lollypop stick certainly not stalks of fresh tomatoes Barnsley chop served running in oil; yuk Not tender at all ! more like mutton Served with mainly the thick undercooked part of cabbage Two tablespoons of what looked like instant mashed potatoes no pease no carrots Hardly a gourmet meal ! £17 ish ? Will not be eating there again John

The positives .. lovely staff. Great environment. Lovely views. Good atmosphere. Home cooked food. The Negatives It’s really inconsistent. You can have great food one time the next time it will be sub standard. It’s grubby outside … they don’t clean the garden area. Grass too long. Shed full of cardboard. Cig ends all over. Dirt all over. Looked like a plasterer had bed. Sitting outside. Due to them deep cleaning kitchen and not cleaning up Come on ! You have a fab place. A fab local pub and restaurant. Put the effort in. Up the standard. Be consistent

1903 is genuinely the best place to go for top quality food and some nice drinks. Keiron and his team in the kitchen did an amazing job with my burger, pork belly, and my friend's steak pie. You could tell a lot of effort had gone into that! The front of house/bar staff were amazing too! Everyone was so polite and nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely be back again soon! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The initial impression was very pleasing, outside and inside decorated nicely. However the positive experience did not last, after being escorted to our table, we were sidelined for locals who entered in after us. The food took an exceptionally long time to arrive, starters were ok, only 1 slice of fried Brie very poor given the price. Main - fish and chips was very disappointing, the batter was burnt and the chips soggy and more like poor school roasted potatoes. Overall very lack lustre shall not be returning

Excellent meal l, atmosphere and staff. Will definitely be back. There were 12 of us and the food was delivered piping hot by staff that were professional and smiling. Thank you.

First time and won’t be the last. Really friendly staff. Now , we need to talk about pork belly. This starter was absolutely delicious, I have had this type of food in Michelin star restaurants but this blew me away. Highly recommended Sunday visit so beef it had to be for me. Huge plate all cooked very well. Delicious food , lovely atmosphere and great staff. Go for it you won’t be disappointed

Had an outstanding Sunday lunch with friends yesterday, beef lamb and pork dinners, few drinks , extra sides and omg where have battered parsnips been all my life! Picture of mine does not do it justice as It had a giant Yorkshire and stuffing that is t shown :)

Very disappointing. Booked in for 12.00, ordered 2 starters to keep the children happy and had to wait until 1.30 for our main courses, mine not being particularly hot when it arrived. As you can imagine a 1 and 4 year old were very bored by then. It would have been a nice gesture to have given us a free drink or not charged for the coffees. It puts me off returning I'm afraid. As a guest of someone else I couldn't really complain whilst there.

Went for lunch on Sunday a little bit hungover, ordered the Dirty burger which is absolutely massive! The Mac and cheese it comes with is unreal, would highly recommend to anyone thinking of going for Sunday lunch!!

By far the best restaurant in South Yorkshire, the food is excellent, Michelin quality and the service was incredible Will definitely be visiting again when I’m in the north.

Visited here for a family get together, after waiting 1 hour 30 since ordering food we had to get up and ask how long it was going to be, to then be told a further 15 / 20 minutes so waiting 2 hours for food is just not acceptable. We had brought our 2 nanas aged 90 and they wanted to walk out and not bother,, Yes we was offered a free drink but we was starving at this point we wanted our food not a drink. The food then arrived the chips were burnt all dark brown in colour didn’t look appetising at all and the fish was just mainly batter. Peas were cold.The rack of lamb was cold came on a bed of what must have been pickled onions & mash potato it was like slop also didn’t come with any red wine jus either as stated on the menu when asked for some was given plain beef gravy so this was sent back and the family member ended up having nothing to eat as would of had to wait again when already waiting all that time. So this was very disappointing after waiting all this time when we was all looking forward to it, yes this meal was obviously knocked off of the bill but this is not acceptable when you have came out for a Christmas get together and end up having nothing to eat. The other food ordered was passible but wasn’t tasty pub food so Do not recommend coming here for food, will not be returning

Really upped their game This place opened a year ago and I have to say the first 3 to 4 months were a bit hit and miss. More miss than hits. Food issues. Good and poor …. But we have eaten here sometimes there’s times a week for the past 6 or so weeks and it’s excellent. Lovely atmosphere attentive staff. Excellent food. Sunday lunch is fab. A must go. Worst fish and chips I have ever had. Batter was over cooked hardly any fish some of the chips were cold and had no taste

From reading other reviews had high expectations but most of the reviews are for Sunday lunch. Went for midweek lunch, starters of roasted vegetable soup and garlic mushrooms were both beautiful. We then waited almost an hour for main courses of chilli and Cajun chicken burger. The chilli was alright but the burger inedible, very dry and far too many spices on it. There were only 4 other people in the restaurant so no excuse of being busy. The waiter did his best and was very polite and accommodating but it did not. Are up for poor food. Disappointing as we were so looking forward to having a good local restaurant.

Had Sunday roast ( beef) and it was absolutely gorgeous. A very generous portion as well. We ordered a couple of sides but they weren’t needed. Service was excellent as well, nothing was too much trouble. Perfect!

What a great pub! The decor is lovely and it's so cosy and homely. All the staff were very friendly and the food was AMAZING!
