Called in for lunch but was quickly told hot drinks and cake only. Was told they close at 2.45 even though the sign on the door says 3. At 2.43 the door was snibbed, to ensure no one else came in. Coffee was meh.....cakes were delicious. Service was dire and delivered by unwelcoming staff, albeit locals seemed to garner a smile from the head honcho. If you don't mind an extremely poor welcome and service, head here. Reading the previous reviews, it would appear this business doesn't care about negative reviews.

Having wandered around Dunbar this attractive looking cafe was beckoning for a breakfast roll and coffee. We found a couple of comfortable chairs and went to place the order. The lady behind the counter was not overly friendly and asked three times what type of sausage was required in the roll. Then another lady put it through the till after asking me again. After all that the wrong type of sausage arrived in the roll!!! Food was tasty - could do with better customer service

I stopped off here after a 30 mile bike ride. I went into the cafe and ordered drinks and cake. The atmosphere from the staff was frosty from the start. Once I’d ordered and paid we were told to move our bikes from the side of the cafe and were told to put them in a back yard that contained at least 20 wheelie bins all covered in bird mess. When the drinks arrived I asked if I could add another chair to the two that were already outside on the pavement. You’d think I’d asked for the Crown Jewels and was met with a curt “no” We quickly drank up and rescued our bikes before the rats got to them. Please avoid this place.

How to make you feel totally unwelcome, waiting for card transaction to complete then tells me I can’t leave my bike outside, went promptly went outside and ordered my pal to shift his around the back where we had to park them next to bins covered with in pigeon feaces. Bike packing so set up with all our technical bling, hard to access. Come back to cafe my other mate tells me they wouldn’t allow us a chair from inside as it encroaches the pavement, however happy for their local customer to haphazardly park a mobility scooter half way across it. Just totally off hand. Had I have known would have gladly gone elsewhere. Hope you fold!!

The place was half empty but we were greeted by a shout of “We’re full” from somewhere in the distance. We walked out and stood outside not sure where else to go, one of the customers waved us back in and pointed out plenty of empty seats but it was “We’re full” again. Obviously we won’t bother going there again, the busy Dunbar garden centre cafe was happy to accommodate us and take our money.

My daughter wanted to treat me to tea and cake and it seemed like this was the only cafe open in the centre of Dunbar on a Monday . A sign on the door did state that the cafe closed at 3pm ( seems very early to me , they could do a trade in afternoon teas until later than that ? ) and also mentioned that last orders are at 2.45pm . We popped in and were very abruptly told that there was no food , only drinks and cakes . That was ok for us so we sat down at an empty table and went to the counter to place the order ( although it is not obvious that’s what you’re meant to do ) Some who came in just after us , were told very abruptly they’d have to have takeaway . One party declined and walked out , the other 2 customers were made to wait outside in the cold for their takeaway teas . One was an elderly lady , surely to goodness they could have been seated ! Very unwelcoming and off putting for visitors to Dunbar

Just visited the cafe, was told when we entered they were full. A gentlemen kindly leaned over and said "I'm just leaving" so we waited for his table. As soon as we sat down we were told to leave the pram outside. "we don't allow prams in here" First of all, I've been in hospitality for over 20 years. Owning and running restaurants. Customer service is paramount to a successful business. Shouting across a counter to potential customers is very bad practice. The cafe itself was very quite with no reserve signs on tables. So I'm fascinated by their response and I'll manner. For a lovely small seaside town with surprisingly not many cafes, I'd highly suggest you spend time learning how to both approach customers and with manners. Certainly won't be back. Far nicer places to go.

The staff in this coffee shop gave us an awful reception to the point that we cancelled our order and left. We were told we couldn’t add an extra chair to our table even though It wasn’t In use and to squeeze onto the sofa. We were told there was no Soup and no apology. It was clear we were not welcome from staff’s body langage and manner. We didn’t understand this as it wasn’t even very busy. Very disappointing because we had read great things about it on Tripadvisor however it sounds very similar to the experience of the person who Wrote the most recent review. We then went to umbertos and the kindness and welcome was wonderful from all staff particularly from Daniela. We absolutely loved it.

After two hours walking around John Muir Country Park we were hoping to find coffee and toasties to sustain us. It was only 14:30, yet when we ordered food we were told it was only cakes as the kitchen was closed. There was a somewhat triumphant tone from the lady that served me which I read as rudeness. A helpful sign reminded visitors that it was "last orders 15 minutes before closing'. Still, we were looking forward to coffee which sadly was lukewarm and rather lacking in taste being mostly frothy milk. Very poor value as three coffees came to £7.40. Apparently, most cafes appear to close at 15:00 in Winter and Dunbar didn't redeem its bleak character and we headed back to Edinburgh on the nearby A1.

All too often cafes can have a set menu with a variety of fancy ingredients, when all you want is something unfussy. Today was that kind of day for us. This place didn’t disappoint. The menu was full of options to choose from, and all tastes were catered for. We had toasties and I loved the side salad too. There was salad, coleslaw, nachos and pasta. Looking forward to holiday treat of a scone with cream and jam. Looked at menu and saw they served this but only within a 2/2.5 hour time slot (sorry can't remember exact times) We were there on a weekday during half term and were 10 minutes into the right time to buy a scone and they said 'sorry we don't have any scones'. I thought this was really slack especially as there is an award winning community bakery a few doors down!! We all had toasties which were lovely. Our son has a nut allergy and we were reassured about their food safety standards as lots of info on the menu about separating nut containing products from nut products. Even so we don't risk buying home bake cakes in establishments like this JUST in case of cross contamination. We ordered the most innocuous thing on the menu for our son, a cheese toastie on white bread. It came with crisps a bit of salad and some pasta (which was a surprise) - my husband spotted that the pasta was in a green sauce and stoped my son from eating it and went to check what was on it. Turns out it was pesto and pesto contains CASHEW nuts the nut that my son is most allergic too (and as common an allergy as peanut). When we said they should really have declared what was going to accompany the toastie on the menu so we could have refused the pasta the woman in charge went very defensive and said we should have declared our allergy at the counter. We explained we didn't think we needed to because we were only ordering a white cheese toasty but she just didn't get it. Afterwards I tried having a word with her and said it was lovely having all those accompaniments with the toasty but really, to protect their own business, they should really declare that the dish is going to come with a nut product. Luckily we were able to remove the crisps that had come into contact with the pesto and it hadn't touched the sandwich itself. She insisted on her line of 'you should have declared the allergy at the counter' and proceeded to take this as an opportunity to tell me about the different types of pasta they serve - clutching at straws I asked if the pesto was homemade as you can make one without nuts, but no it was bought in. I know people reading this who don't have to deal with allergies are probably bored by now but I thought I would mention it. I never got cross and was perfectly calm ( my family had left and I stayed behind to talk to her). It was the attitude that disturbed me - if she'd have said 'I see where you're coming from, yes we shall make this clear from now on' then that would have been great. BUT I know these places have to adhere to strict laws and I honestly think I flagged up a huge flaw in their procedures and she should have acknowledged that. Anyway, I was already disappointed that they were missing such a basic part of their menu when were only just supposed to have started serving them (the scones) and this just cemented my resolve not to return (and the toilet location too to be honest) For the rest of the holiday I took my business to Graze over the road which served fantastic food ( and scones) with a smile, in a more cheerful environment!

My Female companion, and I, arrived in Dunbar at around 14:10, and after parking, crossed the street to the cheery looking, and busy, "1650 Coffee Shop". Initially, we went in, quite cheeky really, to ask to use their "facilities", as I was in desperation! The kind lady behind the counter, freely handed me the key to the Men's, located outside and around the corner of their premises. It was very clean (spotless actually) and we both made use, returning the key, and heading out to explore Dunbar High Street. After passing by virtually every Cafe, Restaurant and Coffee Shop, along the full length, and both sides of the Main Street, we ended-up right back at the "1650", which now looked most promising. There is a variety of seating arrangements available, from comfy Leather Sofas, to standard 4 seat tables. You place your order at the counter, and your food is then delivered. The Menu is pretty extensive, and the Display case of Cakes and other baked delicacies, invites you to splurge, leaving any dietary resolutions in the dust! The pieces on offer were EXTREMELY GENEROUS in size, and the choices, all obviously freshly made, were plentiful! Their main focus, looking at the large selection on offer in the menu, appeared to be Toasties, Wraps, and Panninis. They offer numerous varieties of these, which go for £5.95, but add £1.00 to that, and they will give you the "Soup of the Day"! So I had the Ham Melt Pannini, and Vegetable Soup combo. My companion, had the Baked Potato with Tuna Mayonnaise. Drinks were a Diet Irn Bru and a "Single Pot of Tea". Both dishes came with a side Salad the included Cucumber, Cherry Tomatoes, and a couple of Tablespoons of Elbow Macaroni in Sweet Chili dressing. There was also a handful of Tortilla Chips on the plate. My Pannini was served piping hot, with melting Cheese oozing out of the side, with some Mustard adding a great contrast to the Sandwich. The Vegetable Soup, was okay, but had a flavour-note I could not quite recognise. I opined that it might be Cumin, or some other Herb/Spice. It was thick, like it had been blitzed with a hand-blender. I finished by asking for a small additional portion of the Macaroni Salad, which was provided to me, no hesitation. I unfortunately don't know if I was charged for this, as I never checked the receipt, but would have expected to be charged, but pleasantly surprised if not. Either way, I ordered a Medium Mocha, to go, for our drive back to Glasgow, and the total bill was £18.70. I left a 15% Tip, as they were so accommodating, when we asked to use their Restrooms, and we're not Patrons at that point, plus the general cheeriness throughout our meal. A very, very nice spot for Lunch, or a cuppa and some Cake, after walking the friendly streets of Dunbar. It's a bright, upbeat little gem, very welcoming and comfy!

Okay on a dry day but not great if it had been raining but the toilet was very clean and even had hand cream and hair spray in it. You have to get the key for this from the staff. I would certainly recommend this for a 'pit stop' when in Dunbar.

We had an egg mayo sandwich, and a pizza melt (toastie). To drink we had a tea and a chocolate milkshake. Sandwich was nice, however both came with a pile of crisps and hardly any salad. There was also a teaspoon of pasta, which was really nice. The pizza melt wasn't nice. On the menu it said it had cheese and mozzarella. It actually had only rubbery cheese. There was also a big slice of tomato with a few 'herbs' on. It tasted awful. The place is really nicely decorated. It felt really uncomfortable, as there was also a few other people and they were talking and shouting. The toilet isn't even nearby!!! You have to get a key, go round the back and unlock a tiny, cramped toilet. There was a basket of the staff's own things. You could easily get lost on the way. I won't go back here again, as food wasn't very nice and was expensive.

To the Lorraine S review . My husband and son and I were in the café that morning and because of the behaviour of the child . I'm not surprised at the owner's reaction the child was uncontrollable . There is a notice on the wall to adhere to this . Infact she was polite and very tactful . Great café we go regular for the amazing hot chocolate

On a bitterly cold day 1650 was a real oasis of warmth and conviviality. Service was swift and lunch was very tasty. I could have sat all day watching the world go by from the large picture windows. The decor is inspiring with a lovely vintage vibe, pretty painted display cabinets and lots of home made specialities. Great 'pick me up' on a freezing cold day.

Awful experience in this cafe, made to feel very unwelcome with my small child, owner rude, place cold and coffee mediocre. Baking however was rather tasty but I will not be visiting again .

Passing through Dunbar we saw an empty parking space so stopped and had a wee wander. Keeking in the window and liking the quaint look inside we went in for coffees however I finished up by having a bowl of delicious soup whilst my wife had coffee and a scone with a small pot of raspberry jam. This was brought to our table by a friendly young staff member. Absolutely delightful, memorable and so pleased we saw that empty parking space!

Stopped off here when I was wondering through town with my girlfriend and daughter of 3. We had a few cakes a coffee and a pot of tea. They even gave my 3 year old a little tea cup which she absolutely loved! The staff were great even showing us a map to go to a good park near by! Lovely place!

Lovely staff. Quirky decor. Very comfy sofas....could have fallen asleep. "Outdoor" toilet was a little off putting, nearly didn't bother going, but actually it's very clean and not as awful as it first sounded. Coffee was really good and nice strong tea. Scones, toasted teacake all delicious. Would definitely recommend this cafe.

The cafe has a double front and by looking in it looked inviting. The settees seem to attract the people. By the time we got in the settees were roped off - not that I wanted to sit on one. At my age arms on chairs help me to get up. At the counter the young lady was very helpful in taking our order. Nice tasting coffee.

i am sorry to say that the Victoria afternoon tea was not up to the standard that i was lead to believe from the other reviewers.the sandwich had margarine not butter and tasteless ham, the scone was strange just plain not sweet, and with Irish butter and french jam, sorry but there is a dairy just up the road and Scotland has its own summer berries, should we not start using local. and on a afternoon tea you usually get cream, or at least milk with the coffee. tray bakes i am sorry just tasted store bought, i dont like complaining but i do think you should raise your standards as there are other places in Dunbar that offer better

Ate here twice during our week's holiday in the area.Great food, very good coffee - once you work out how to use the cafetiere! I'm just a bloke and it was a bit beyond me to begin with. Sorry! All in all, a very welcoming, comfortable place for lunch or just a coffee. Oh, and the apricot and frangipane tart was one of the nicest pastries I have ever eaten! We will certainly return if we are ever in the area again!

Stopped here on Holidays. Group of 7. Fantastic all round. Children's menu - comes with a chalk board which is a nice.touch to keep them busy. Chessboard was a nice plate, so was the soup and panini. Everything ordered got the thumbs up. Desserts were great too. Service was attentive but not intrusive - nice comfy sofa as well. Pricing was about right for the quality. food clearly made with thought. Will be back.

We popped in for a coffee and cake while wandering round Dunbar. We were made very welcome by the staff (at the end of their day), and settled into the very comfy lounge chairs. Our cappuccino's and cakes arrived very quickly. The homemade cakes were delicious and the coffee really tasty. The shop also does more substantial food but we were too full after lunch elsewhere. Highly recommended.
