1 Spice Indian Restaurant, Devizes in Wiltshire

Not really sure what has happened, but this isn't the place it used to be. Service was poor, my drink arrived flat, the poppadoms where stale and the chicken was pink. Real shame as this used to be our Indian Restaurant of choice. I know we weren't the only ones who had an issue, so maybe they were having a bad night. Clearly need to concentrate on either the Restaurant or Takeaway because they can't do both

I don't know what happened last night as a group of 8 of us visiting Devizes booked here on the strength of the good reviews, the provenance of which I am no longer sure. After arriving at 6.15pm our orders were taken and our choice of starters arrived promptly. I couldn't fault the starters. However, by 8.10pm it was very apparent that takeaway orders were being prioritised over customers sat in the restaurant and there was still no sign of our food. The atmosphere in the packed restaurant was turning ugly as none of the seated customers had their main courses. Many had been there a similar length of time to our group. No apologies or explanation was ever forthcoming from any member of staff. At this point we paid for what we had and left. Several other disgruntled customers were doing the same. I would hope for the people of Devizes that this was a one off but we would not return

What can we say other than this was an extremely disappointing experience. Pre booked a month ago for 8 people. Having received a telephone call from them to confirm we were still coming, our expectations were high. On arrival 15 mins early we were shown to our table drinks ordered and served along with stale poppadoms, certainly not fresh. Orders taken and starters arrived in a timely manner, and to be fair were very nice. This is where it all wrong, and not just for our table. The restaurant became very busy from about 7 onwards, including a long queue waiting for takeaway collection. This queue was clearly given priority over the people sitting in the restaurant. Our orders were taken at 6-30 and we were still waiting for our mains at 8-15, no apologies although they were able to still keep taking drinks orders. We were one of at least 3 tables to call it a day all very hungry and disappointed. They wanted to charge us for the whole order but in the end we only quite rightly paid for drinks. Their excuse were they were swamped with takeaway orders. Priorities should be with people sitting in the restaurant to eat, clearly not the case. If that’s their stance maybe they should be a takeaway only. Will not be going back here in a million years

Somewhat embarrassed that I chose to book this restaurant for a group of eight friends visiting Devizes for the weekend, however, the majority of the reviews were superb so, why would I not? Our starters were delivered quickly and represented excellent value for money as the portion sizes were more than generous. We then waited almost 2 hours for our main courses but they were not forthcoming as it was apparent that they were prioritising takeaway orders over eat-in customers. No explanation had been forthcoming, nor an apology or any offer of compensatory drinks, etc so, having observed another table of diners walk out, we paid for the drinks we’d had and also left in disgust. As we were leaving, a table next to us who had arrived well after us, were being served their main courses however their order was completely wrong - we wondered whether they were being served our main courses! Last night, this place was an absolute shambles and if I were to return to Devizes in the future, I would avoid, avoid, avoid!

We were visiting Devizes with friends and after looking at reviews booked a table for 8 people at 18.30 on 28/09/24 as at least one of our party needs to eat early for health reasons. We arrived early and were shown our seats and orders were taken almost straight away. Our starters were delivered before 19.00 and we all commented how big they were, the reason for this became apparent later, whilst we were eating the restaurant became full and a large queue developed for collection of takeaway and we commented on that is normally a good sign of the popularity. At around 20.00 we noticed that not one table in the restaurant was eating and the waiters were rushing back and forth with takeaway collections. We called a waiter over to ask where our mains were and what the hold up was to be told "i don't work in the kitchen." Finally at around 20.15 we decided enough was enough and along with other tables decided to leave. We went to the till to pay and eventually managed after several attempts to get the bill not to show food we had never received. I asked what the problem was with us getting our food to be told they had loads of takeaway orders which obviously took precedence to them than customers sitting waiting for a meal, perhaps they thought we would just continue to order drinks whilst waiting. My advice if you have booked a table here is not to order anything from the waiter, just sit down and phone for a takeaway and then eat at your table at least you will be guaranteed to get your order. Only gave 1 star as couldn't give zero. A complete shambles and will not be returning.

Awful service. Waiter did not pour our drinks. Our daughter’s J2O was served with cap taken off but unshaken so had sediment all at the bottom. Really basic things. Forgot to top up our mango chutneys after we asked. Asked me to pay the bill before I had checked it. Quite rude. No smile. No friendliness. No opening the door when we left. Do not bother.

We come here every time we visit Devizes and it never disappoints. The prawn puri is unusual but fantastic. Lamb balti and special chicken dish with fruity curry sauce both really good. We’ll be back. Many thanks - David

Had prawn madras just liquid coloured water no body no spice just juice and a few prawns not good mixed veg curried veg bland won’t be back shocking

I was back in Devizes this week with work after a couple of years. Remembered ISpice from last time and found it in great order. I went more than once and enjoyed every visit. Highlights included a lamb dopiaza and some more unusual specialties but I found each to be very good and the staff on each visit were helpful and welcoming. If like me you’re a real ale fan I suggest a pint or more in the British Lion then a curry. Enjoy Devizes.

There are a few choices of Indian restaurants in Devizes but I am pleased that I chose Spice. The starters were generous and well presented. The akbori king prawns were delicious as was the duck shashlick which was tender and beautifully cooked with onions and tomatoes. Tarka dhal and okra sides, naans and a simple rice were great. All together mouthwatering. The staff were friendly and helpful. All topped off with an After Eight! Perfect! Wish it was my local!

Order a takeaway via the app- very easy - order was waiting at the allotted time- lovely and hot - as always a delicious meal -thank you

It is with sadness that I’m having to write this.. I have been a customer for over 15 years, that has now ended. I ordered a takeaway last night at 7pm - I was still waiting at 8.05pm having been told that my order will be ready in 30-35 minutes. On arrival I was told on 3 occasions that my order was minutes away from being ready. Clearly not true. When I arrived home the order was unrecognisable apart from the 2 curry dishes. This is very poor indeed. Do not lie to customers and do not offer a bottle of beer as recompense - especially to an alcoholic.. Not good enough.!!!

Tried the 1spice whilst staying in Devizes for a night. Nice modern decor and not too busy midweek. Tried a chicken naga and a prawn dish. Naga quite hot and aromatic. Tasty okra bhaji. Rice was not quite as good a but sticky.

The food and service was very good. The staff were very polite and the menu was full of treats. My friend had been before and recommended 1Spice. I will go back and as a bonus it was open on Monday, which is rare in Devizes.

Visiting Devizes for a few days and decided to try this restaurant. So glad we did, modern feel, wonderfully attentive staff, fabulous food all well presented and in today’s world great value. Would definitely visit again the next time we’re in town. Thoroughly recommend.

The most fantastic indian cuisine, always consistent food and a very friendly service. All members of staff are friendly and they even remember your name and orders. We have been to one spice for years and the small touches they do for you go so far, if it’s your birthday they will celebrate and this time we went in the weekend before our wedding they wrote “congratulations” on mine and my fiancé plates it’s the small touches and superb food that keeps us going back regularly. My husband and I were on a brief visit to Devizes. Having read the reviews, we tried on the offchance to get a table for last Saturday evening. The restaurant was very busy with a great, friendly attitude from both customers and staff. Our waiter helped me make my choice, which turned out to be possibly the best Indian meal I've ever had. Absolutely delicious. Thank you. Great Find. Great Meal. Great Service.

Up from S Devon for a brief return to my home town for 3 nights B&B. TA due diligence suggested here best for a Saturday night curry. Quite right too. 19.30 almost fully booked and buzzy. Venue, menu and staff all excellent. Both had varieties of Lamb for mains, just lovely. Starters, mains a drink and coffees under £50 for us both. Bravo Team 1Spice. Recommended.

Went here as a group of 16. Nothing was missesd (which I know you would expect but happens often when in a group this size) the lady even rememberes what each person was having instead of shouting the name of the curries across the table Food and service was honestly amazing Highly recommend

Just happened on this restaurant on a wet Sunday evening. So impressed with the selection of dishes on the menu. I had the garlic chicken which wes outstanding. Very friendly, attentive staff. We shall certainly return. 😊

Lovely lamb Balti in superb sauce, with fluffy nan bread included in price, and very friendly, attentive service. It also has ostrich dishes on the menu, which was intriguing. We’d definitely recommend this place for food, nice comfy seating and service.

Such an amazing, caring restaurant. They go over and beyond your needs and requirements. The food is absolutely amazing. My fault it was a little too spicy, they went out of their way to rectify my fault in ordering the wrong dish., giving me milk and re ordering a milder version. I love these people and this restaurant.

I have to say it was a very warm welcome however my LAMB tikka MADRAS was awfull they must have not understand me as it tastes exactly like a lamb tikka masala. And the fact it was ready before my 2 plain poppadoms had been devoured suggested to me it must have been heated with radiation not to mention it was virtually unchewable. I hope you all don't make the same mistake

Haven't been here for just over 2 years. Food is still great, far more than we could eat, so that's breakfast sorted. Covid restrictions meant a takeaway only. Ordered over the phone, Food was ready on time. Collection was very easy and Covid secure. Hopefully when conditions allow, will return.

Had a take away last night. Everything from the warm welcome on the telephone as we ordered, to the welcome in the restaurant as we collected, and the quality and delicious taste of the food, made our whole eating/buying experience excellent. I’m really looking forward to eating inside when lockdown lifts. Thank you One Spice!

The main reason I hate the lockdown is that it has stopped me from eating at 1Spice when I am in Devizes. You always get a warm welcome from Mossy and the team and the atmosphere is always fantastic as everybody knows they are going to have a great meal. The menu is extensive, including all the usual favourites, and if you have a taste for the exotic, Mr Ostrich Naga anyone?Like a lot of our hospitality sector, I hear that they are struggling at the moment, so if you live locally then please keep them busy with your takeaway orders, it would be tragic to lose a great dining option like this in Devizes. Eat in to Help out. Or something like that.

Ordered from one spice, spur of the moment as my friend said he uses it a lot, I literally couldn’t believe how nice the food was! I wish I ordered more! Called for collection and was ready within 15mins to collect, greeted at the shop by the nicest people, who clearly love their food, and so do I now!! Defiantly will become my regular.. 5*****

My brother lives an hour away from us, and would rather do a two hour round trip to visit 1 Spice in Devizes for his birthday meal, than eat out where he lives. We always have excellent service from the friendly and welcoming team, and fabulous food from their wide ranging menu. On a Saturday night it is always busy, both with people eating in and collecting takeaways. Our whole family recommends it highly!

This is the second visit and it was truly was as good as the first time - it says something when it’s busy in the lunchtime and busy mid evening - the staff were very welcoming and the covid restrictions were well in place, would definitely visit again

Just had an amazing meal here. The choices of dishes was plentiful and made choosing very hard. The service was quick and the food came out in quick time and hot. Will definitely be back again to try some of the other dishes on the menu!

Really impressed by this place, very busy but we got served straight away and food came in a timely manner. Food was fresh , cooked well and tasty. I come from a city where curries are king so its not always easy to find a place that could compete with my expectations, but this place does.

We were recommended to this Restaurant, and it has instantly become one of or favorites.We received a very friendly welcome, attentive service throughout the visit without being intrusive, and a member of staff always on hand to deal with any requests.The food is superb! We stopped here on a recommendation as we live in Dorset and we weren’t disappointed. One of the best curry’s I have ever experienced. The service was excellent and it was the waiters first night. If you haven’t tried 1 Soice give it a go, it’s top draw.

This is a superb Indian restaurant with attentive staff and great atmosphere even when social distancing. All of our food was well cooked, tasty and hot. We would certainly return when back in the area, thank you.

Whether eating in or taking away, it's service with a smile. The menu has a good choice, although a nice fish curry might be a useful addition! Couldn't fault quality or portion size and, of course, a Cobra is always welcome. Keep it up Hossain!

Having never been to Devizes before, we found this restaurant on- line and after reading the excellent reviews decided to book a table. We weren't disappointed - great and safe service and lovely food. Would definately recommend this restaurant and return if we are in the area again.

Friday night dinner! Unusual dishes and the popular choices. Really nicely freshly cooked with a light touch. No thick heavy sauces here. Excellent service and very well set up for customer safety.

Really friendly staff greeted us and we were located well away from other tables to distance. The menu was varied and the food was excellent - we all really enjoyed it.

Disappointing - upon arrivalwe weren’t asked for any contact details (COVID Contact Tracing)Our poppadoms were soft and I was informed my meal choice was unavailable.The food we had was substantial but nothing special - we regretted our restaurant choice. Sadly there was nothing pleasant about the dining experience.

Having avoided all take away food and not been to a pub or restaurant for 6 months my wife and i could stand it no longer !!!!! We NEEDED a meal cooked by somebody other than are selves and the thought of 1 Spice was too much to resist. Takeaway was excellent as it always is but what really impressed me on this occasion was the attention to detail and the strict adherence to social distancing measures etc.I have driven past many pubs lately where it looked to me like total chaos - hordes of people and children - none of them social distancing - people crowded round small outside tables often 10 to a table. Loads of people obviously in the establishments as well - again no social distancing what so ever.I work for the NHS and am confident that the R rate is low enough for people to go out and enjoy themselves - but please do it responsibly.Every table in 1 Spice is surrounded by Perspex boards - all the staff were in full PPE - the bar area is now like the counter at your local bank - a little bit unnerving initially i admit but it makes total sense.In addition the staff all of whom seem have worked in their for many years - were all as jolly and pleased to see me as they ever were.If i could give this place 6 stars I would - well done chaps.Mr Wakefield :

Poor social distancing measures - sat another table back to back with our own despite there being plenty of space to spread tables out. Waiters brought out food and cleared tables without wearing masks. At one point the waiter was so close a girl sat at our table could feel his breath on her face. As a group of young women visiting the restaurant we felt extremely uncomfortable due to the male staff lingering around our table, notably not behaving this way with other customers. When details requested for track and trace, it was asked in a demanding way, asking for name, number and address, without announcing it being for NHS track and trace. Also noted other customers were not being asked for this information. Members of staff were staring from behind a screen, and also caught inappropriately staring at us on several occasions. The food came out Luke-warm, with very little spice, and cutlery was grabbed haphazardly from another table. Overall poor experience, made worse by inappropriate and clueless staff. Could not get out there fast enough, would not recommend.

Spontaneous meal as we wanted to do the eat out to help out scheme. Wonderful food and good social distancing with the boards between tables! Only 3 stars though as my lemonade was flat and when asked for another one I got another flat one... I didn’t drink it and told a server at the end I didn’t drink it because of this and they still left it on my bill. Also the young server girl seemed like she didn’t want to be there. Will be back as good is great.

Two families on a canal boat doing the kennet and Avon canal holiday thing at the end of July. Planned to do one night in Devizes but after finding this restaurant on TripAdvisor we came back two days later!Where to start - nothing special from the outside or even the inside. Very friendly staff. Arafin looked after us on both nights and was funny but also very good at his job. (Thanks for the chicken naga recommendation).The food is basically very very good from the poppas n pickles to the breads etc and I have eaten a lot of Indian/Bangladeshi food. Totally delicious. Wish we were back in that area again in the near future.Keep up the good work.

The food was really nice. It didn't look like much on the plate but it turned out to be plenty and I was stuffed. The staff were friendly and attentive, the wait time wasn't too bad. Just a couple of things could be better. The cola was quite flat and although the staff had taken covid measures regarding screens and limiting customers the waiters came very close. I'm not sure why they were wearing gloves when one waiter had his finger and thumb sticking out of the end of his!

Visited 1Spice last night to celebrate a birthday. Not eaten Indian for a long time so went with recommendations by our waiter. A great choice with good quality meat and very helpful with my gluten free diet.COVID 19 lockdown changes have been sympathetically made with low screens that add to the cosines and ambience of the restaurant. Would certainly eat here again.

Had a lovely meal here yesterday. The food was delicious and staff were very friendly as usual. All covid related practices and guidelines were being followed and it was very clear staff were taking it seriously; at no point did we feel concerned. Will be back again very soon

Very disappointed in the quality of food. Rice had been microwaved as it was stuck in chunks. I used to chef so its very apparent what they did. The curry was just bland and lack any fresh spices. To sum up a microwave meal served as a take away. There we a number of us that ordered different dishes but all suffered with bland dishes lacking anything that you could regard as fresh. So everyone disappointed and to top it off . Everyone who ate food from one spice all had very bad stomachs for over a day with very frequent visits to the toilet. Only the people in our house who ate from one spice that evening sufferedFrom this. I wouldn't have wrote a review for a bad curry but I do take kitchen procedures very serious especially when it effects people health. I have 4 other people who very also won't be using this establishment again especially after a being so ill.

This is by far my favourite Indian restaurant in Devizes - I've been going here since they opened and the food is consistently of excellent quality. They have an especially good vegetarian selection, the Brinjal Motra is fantastic. What really makes it is the friendly staff who always make you feel welcome.

Very disappointed, food lacked any flavour, it was very bland. Chicken Tikka tasted exactly like plain chicken with a red colouring to it. The Naan bread was like something out of a packet and was really dry.

The three dishes that I ordered were bland, could have all been the same dish, the pilau rice was stodgy and white, with some food colouring thrown on top, the mushroom bahji was stewed with some spice thrown in, overall very disapointing I am local and will not be eating agiain from 1spice

Great takeaway. Served by polite staff at the agreed time, all dishes labelled and as ordered. Good distancing and customer control and payment.

The food was excellent. The service was quick and the staff very friendly. It was our first time eating from here and will definitely be in next time to eat in the restaurant. One thing we did think for a takeaway it would have been useful to have the name of each dish written on the container as we had some dishes which looked similar.

This is the only place worth going to in Devizes.. Nothing is ever to much trouble. The staff are friendly.. Funny and will always chat and are very entertaining. The food is fresh and generous. They will always make dishes hotter or milder etc for you. We get take outs to.. Same wonderful standard.. Just try it!

We have eaten in Indian restaurants all over the place, including India and Bangladesh.The food here is amazing,its always well presented, very tasty and authentic.The service is top class and the staff are professional, friendly and make you very welcome. Always our first choice for Indian cuisine.

The food was good. However the waiter wanted to know where my wife was from, she is Eastern European born, now in the UK nearly 18 years. Next thing someone from the kitchen came and leaned on the wall next to my wife in Russian. Unfortunately my wife started debating the country where she was born and brought up with someone who had been there for a short time. He decided then to take offense at nothing and was very argumentative and arrogant. A friend with us who has lived in a Muslim country for 25 years put him firmly and logically in his place, but the peace of our Sunday lunch was shattered, end we were paying for the privilege. It was our first time here, because our usual haunt was closed, a place where we have always received and given respect. Never will I go into 1spice again. I do not expect to be questioned by waiters or approached by kitchen staff, not because I consider myself superior, but because I am a paying guest.

We love Indian food but this place wasn’t the best. It’s like being in a glorified canteen at best. Won’t be eating here again.

This is the second time I have visited this restaurant on my visits to Devizes and both times have been excellent. The Restaurant was busy on a Wednesday night that appeared dead everywhere else, always a good sign. The decor is modern, the service was great and the menu was varied. The quality of the food was excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will try and visit 1 Spice on all future Devizes trips, First rate.

Always delighted with the service here wether that's coming for a sit down down meal or collecting a takeaway, always busy and always still cracking out beautiful flavours with attention to guests requirements. Top work keep it up

This restaurant offers delicious food in a relaxing atmosphere, and the service we received was excellent

We were staying in the White Bear just around the corner from 1 Spice and wandered around for dinner not long after they had opened on the Friday evening. One couple had beaten us to it but apart from that it was empty with plenty of covers so we were surprised when the receptionist asked we we had booked - what it’s empty! Confirming that we hadn’t booked she would just check to see if that could fit us in which luckily they did. It soon became apparent that this is a very popular restaurant as it quite quickly began to fill up, even this early. First impressions are that the place is spotlessly clean with a lovely ambiance. The staff were extremely friendly and efficient without being over bearing. The food was immaculately presented and extremely tasty, our chicken madras, vegetable rice, Bombay aloo and tandoori roti were all exceptional. If you visit Devises it would be criminal not to give this place a visit, you won’t be disappointed.

Best curry in town by far. Service is friendly. You will wait a little while for you meal as it is fresh cooked. Good things are worth waiting for. Bar selection isn’t bad.

A very good restaurant with a great menu and a tasty choice of beers. My favourite is the king cobra. Even on a Monday it’s busy and has a good atmosphere. Treat yourself to a tasty meal with good service and it won’t break the bank.

Been going to 1 Spice for a few years and always had great food and the service and atmosphere perfect. The king prawn and chicken shashlik dish is a favourite and is always cooked perfectly. The vegetable dishes are always cooked fresh - never oily. Thoroughly recommend for small or larger groups - thanks 1 Spice...

Visiting family in Devizes and we had a fantastic meal at 1 Spice. The restaurant was busy but staff were handling orders effortlessly. We are all enthusiastic about Indian/Asian food so we ordered a good variety of starters and main meals and weren't disappointed, we all enjoyed our visit to 1 Spice. I know my daughter and her husband will be going back and next time I'm down from Scotland I'll hopefully be joining them.

The best Indian around. Have been coming for years and it’s excellent every time. Great food and impeccable service. This is one of our absolute favourite places to eat!

I come here every few months with friends or family and can never fault the food or the service. We always leave will full bellies! The atmosphere in there is perfect though can get noisy when they are busy but this I suppose is to be expected. Never had a bad thing to say about the place!

The food is the most tasty Indian I've ever had its reasonably priced and the staff are fantastic always make me welcome wether I'm as a couple or with my children. I will continue being a loyal customer highly recommend

Second time I’ve been service absolutely hideous waited fortyfive minutes for starters almost another hour for mains they turned up cold and inedible. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone

What a wonderful establishment 1st time we’ve been and the best Indian I’ve eaten in a long time Nothing too much trouble and staff helpful & friendly Butter chicken was spot on Lovely !

We turned up on spec having been at a function in the town. For a Wednesday evening we were very surprised how full the restaurant was but after 2 minutes at the bar with a beer we were seated.

We walked in on a Saturday evening at 7.30pm and were asked if we had reservations which we didn’t. We were very impressed straight away how friendly and professional the staff were and they quickly found us a table despite being very busy. The staff were attentive and checked in to see if we needed anymore drinks. I asked for a curry that wasn’t on the menu and they said without any hesitations that was okay. The food was delicious, one of the best I’ve ever had and I’ve had a fair few curry’s in my lifetime. We will most definitely going back and I will recommend to all my friends and family. Thank-you!

Superb evening. food fresh and really tasty - first time I've managed to eat a whole Indian meal but couldn't leave any of it ,it was so good.The staff and care to detail was great - they noticed if we needed more water, and were so helpful. saw someone break a glass of wine by mistake and they immediately put them at their ease. This is a class establishment and I will definatly go back when I visit the area again.Good price, great food, great atmostphere.

Stayed in Devizes on Sunday 17th November and fancied a curry in the evening.We have not used this restaurant since the new owners took over. It was well worth the visit. The staff were friendly and the food was excellent.

Very prompt service, friendly staff, great menu and the food was superb. Would definitely go again. We went for friends birthday , lovely at,osphere, great night had by all.

Had another tremendous takeaway from here again . Well worth the 45 minute drive each way from Salisbury. It looks a great place to take family and friends to sit in as there is alway a great atmosphere. All staff are are welcoming and friendly when you turn up

Having just moved to the area I am trying all places recommended by friends, this restaurant did not dissapoint,it was very busy on a Wednesday evening but the service was not rushed and we were shown plenty of patience on asking about various dishes on the menu. We went with some recommended dishes from our waiter Nd we were not disappointed. Our food came out quickly, with care and attention every dish was full of flavour. I would definatley recommend a visit, I am looking forward to making this a regular on my calendar. All in all we had a fabulous evening we were not rushed after our food was finished and encouraged to stay for drinks if we wanted, which we did! This place has such a warm and friendly atmosphere you are guaranteed a good night!

カレーをいただきましたが美味しかったです。スパイスはきいていましたが、からすぎることはありませんでした。多分、インド方面から輸入したビールを飲みましたが、日本人の口にも合うと思いました。店員の方は明るく、感じの良い方で、料理の説明もいろいろしてくれました。

Always well frequented, even mid-week which kind of says it all. Excellent food, lovely service, good VFM. Hard to beat, certainly no complaints here

Went there by recommendation which was absolutely spot on. Staff were lovely, attentive but not stuffy and the food was fabulous. We would thoroughly recommend and we hope to be in the area again at some point to re-visit

Have visited a couple of times and have not been disappointed. food has been excellent on both occasions staff are most welcoming and enjoy a bit of friendly banter, well recommended and looking forward to another visit in the near future
