Best roast that we have had in a very long time. Amazing value for money, everything on the roast was cooked to perfection. Staff are lovely and attentive. Great selection of drinks, including Hawkstone lager.

My step daughter and her two children came up to see me from Devon as a treat for me. Unfortunately, both children are coeliac, the girl seriously so. Because of this, my step daughter phoned ahead to check the menu, and the landlady assured her that there was a big selection of gluten free food. Not only that, but the kitchen had different areas in order to avoid cross contamination. On the strength of that, we booked for dinner. Initially we were served with drinks by a very nice waitress who gave us the menu. There was no obvious sign to say which meals were gluten free so we assumed there was another. However, when we asked the waitress, she said the landlady had told her to say that most of the meals were gluten free apart from the burgers. My granddaughter ordered sausage and mash with no gravy and my grandson a curry. The waitress said she would check those specific meals, but neither were gluten free. My granddaughter made another choice, but again, was told that it wasnt gluten free. So, we said could she possibly check with the chef which specific meals were appropriate. She did so, and informed us that the ONLY choice was hunters chicken. Neither child had wanted that but as it was all that was available, they both reluctantly said OK. We had arrived at 7.30 pm, and what with the waitress having to keep checking, it must have been 8 pm before our order was in. We then waited…. and waited….. and waited. Our meals eventually arrived after 9.15 pm. The waitress had spotted that we were unhappy, so one of the other staff ((maybe the manager?) came over and said he would get us a free drink. Then the landlady came to see us, to tell us that the chef had been particularly busy, was on his own, and two of her three waitresses had called in sick that morning. I understand that staff shortages cause problems, but it wasnt MY problem. She knew all this when my step daughter phoned, but still said we should have a nice evening and a good choice of food. You will gather that we will NOT be returning to the Black Horse!
