The best restaurants serving British food in Taw Vale Mid Devon South West

Nice pub, cosy, friendly, but just launched a new menu and food was pretty terrible. I had a fish fillet with pesto crumb...the crumb top was awful tasting and the fish was tasteless. I asked for veg instead of salad which had zero flavour and was overcooked. My partner's battered cod and chips was greasy and the chips were just husks. Real shame as it seemed to be a nice family run pub but food was a real let down. Sorry. If they needed more time to heat fryers up to temp...we would have waited.

Stopped for food at lunchtime on a bank Holiday Monday, and was relieved the pkace wasnt rammed with diners, so could get a walk in meal. I ordered a heritage tomato and mozzarella salad for £9.50. When I order a salad from the 'Mains' part of a menu, I feel it's acceptable to expect something that leaves me feeling satiated. What arrived was 1 tomato in slices, with an equal amount of sliced mozzarella and basil leaves, on a side plate. I was very glad I'd ordered a portion of luke warm fries to accompany my main. I've been a professional vegetable grower for 20 years, and unluckily for some, a member of the Heritage Seed Library for half that time. I have never grown, nor eaten a heritage tomato that looks and tastes like something hydroponically grown, lije what was on my plate. I wondered if the out of season heritage tomato would be why this salad cost a small fortune. It would have been some consolation if that was the case. There was nothing else on the menu that I wished to risk trying ( I really nearly sent it straight back), and I had a long journey home without knowing where I could next purchase some food, so I had to put up with it. Service wasn't great. Had to ask for salt and pepper. When leaving, we both seperately said goodbye to a member of bar staff, and got zero reply. I don't think she got the memo that she's in the hospitality trade. Pretty terrible really. Beer was OK. Nice seating area by woodburner. Won't be back.
