The pub has started to decline since the departure of the last bar manager in Dec. Not under any current manager , managed by relief who are doing their best and are friendly. First impressions are paramount to getting people through the door , the outside front and back are littered with cigarette ends and the Ash trays /Ash bins are overflowing, have on occasion on entering been greeted by a strong smell of weed which is not a place I would stay and drink in and so have left. The beer garden where once it was a pleasure to sit is now a place you'd really not enjoy the surroundings, litter, dead leaves , broken heater , discarded cigarettes and overflowing Ash trays. The female toilets are filthy , empty hand wash , no female hygiene products. My partner said the male toilets aren't much better with chewing gum , plasters in the urinals , sink filthy , floor disgusting and the smell 😳. What is the brewery doing about this ? The regular customers are starting to go to other pubs because they say the atmosphere has gone , it's no longer welcoming, they all say the same thing , things were better under the previous manager . Sort this before it's too late and we lose another pub in whitehaven !!

Edit: been a few times and everything just keeps getting better! First time visiting the venue which is very smart and well spaced, there won't be any accidental elbow touching here. We went for the afternoon tea, which was massive and to be fair, very tasty. The scotch egg and sausage roll were great and the chicken and quiche also very good. After getting beyond those I was struggling! With three puds it was clear I would never be able to finish it all. I ate the scone which was pretty good. Not the best, but decent. The brownie and lemon posset had to come home with me in a box! Overall it was very enjoyable, although I'm not sure we can really call it an afternoon tea! In my opinion, they could easily have removed the chicken and posset and added in a small finger sandwich or two. The result would still be a very non-traditional afternoon tea, but it might have been close enough to call it one. There really should at least be a nod to cucumber somewhere in there Edit: paid another visit and went for regular menu items. The meal was lovely, a bit different and still generously sized. At lunchtime, with three of us eating, none of us actually managed to polish of our meal! The star of the show was the Thai curry, probably about as good as it gets outside an actual Thai restaurant

The Tesco cafe in the Whitehaven branch isn't a bad place to eat if you're out shopping or waiting for a train at the station next door. Compared with Morrisons, which is always packed and the tables too close together, the Tesco cafe is more spacious, less rushed and has a selection of papers to read while you're waiting. The quality of the meals are better as well: I had a chicken burger and chips for £ 7.25 that was decent enough and the chips were of the chunky rather than French fries variety that I prefer and the burger was of a good standard. Also worth considering is the full English breakfast for £ 8.50 that another customer bought and had everything you'd expect.
