The Chequers in the village of Orwell (near Wimpole) is a great pub with a lovely ambience, friendly service and - with owner/chef Tina Cheng in the kitchen - a delicious menu made with quality produce. We very much enjoyed: Starters: Salt & Pepper Squid and King Prawns with garlic, ginger, spring onion, chilli, baby gem, citrus sweet chilli. Pulled Pork Croquettes with homemade kimchi, garlic chilli mayo, cucumber, radish. Mains from the Specials menu: Pork in Black Bean Stir Fry with rice and vegetables. Panang Curry with chicken and rice. Delectable desserts were Cappuccino Crème Brûlée and Chocolate Fondant.

We were gifted a Cambscuisine voucher for £50 and decided to come here as nearer to us plus planned a visit to Wimpole Hall as well as less then 5 miles away. Shown to table in conservatory and very attentive service from then on. We both had the 3 course set lunch menu which was very nicely cooked. Husband's bacon chop although very thick was also half fat which was a bit off putting but the sticky toffee pudding complete with home made honeycomb more than made up for it. It was a shame that our bill took 5 attempts to get it right! The voucher was not deducted at first then it was just plain wrong from then on. We asked for the service charge which in our case was £6.75 and the £1 community help to be taken off because of this. It has not put us off visiting again if in the area as very nice pub and village.

We've been a couple of times and the food is delicious, well presented and the portions are ample. I would usually give 5 stars but on this occasion the table we were sat at was disappointing. My husband and I went for my birthday dinner and the main restaurant had some empty tables but we were sat on a very small table (we had reserved ahead) and away from the main restaurant opposite the reception desk where we overheard all the staff and telephone booking conversations and guests who had not booked taken to the main restaurant . I felt it caused a lack of atmosphere that a bustling restaurant would invoke. As we left, the main restaurant had all the candles lit (our table didn't have a candle) and it looked cosy and there were still empty tables. L

I just just got a coffee from your cafe. I asked for a fruit scone and your staff member was unsure if you had any she then proceeded to feel all the scones with her bare hand before telling me there was one. Of course I declined to take one, not withstanding there is global pandemic it is completely unhygienic to handle food in that manner. Disgusting!
