Yr Hen Fecws Restaurant in Gwynedd

We booked this based on the reviews here on Trip Advisor. We were not disappointed. Tucked a street away from the High Street, it's unassuming considering The Ship is two doors up. It's an unassuming, welcoming place, lit by fairy lights and candles. The atmosphere inside was lovely, the music in the dining room perfect and the staff lovely and welcoming. The real star on this is the food. We went straight to main course, I had the salmon, my husband the pie of the day. Both were cooked to perfection. The portion size was just right, the service excellent. I asked for something to be taken out of the dish, which wasn't a problem. Dessert was a real treat. I had the Baileys creme brulee, my husband pineapple upside down cake from the specials board. Both were amazing, the perfect end to the meal. I also asked if it was possible to have a cheese board to take away, for a snack later this evening. Again, this was not a problem, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. The plum chutney is the perfect accompaniment to the cheese. We are here on holiday, so this has been a lovely evening treat and very reasonably priced. We paid £80 for 3 drinks, 2 main courses and 3 desserts. We will definitely rebook next time we are in the area.

Very clean and comfortable accommodation and the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast was outstanding. I wish it was nearer to my home as I would dine there regularly. The best restaurant I can remember for a long time.

We found this little gem on trip advisor and the reviews were excellent . From walking through the doors to leaving the staff made you feel at home and were very welcoming. We ordered the belly pork bites and scallops for starters and it was cooked to perfection with surf and turf as a main the fillet steak was perfect. We would definitely be back again and recommend this restaurant well done to all the team .

What can I say…. This has got to be one of the best restaurants I have eaten in in a very long time. From the moment we walked in, we were met with a very warm welcome and immediately shown to our table. The menu offered so much variety it was difficult to choose, there were even specials. We were a party of four, every course was perfectly presented and tasted delicious. I’m not one for puddings but 3 of us couldn’t resist, we weren’t disappointed. My only complaint…. I wish this restaurant was on my doorstep, but on the other hand having my own restaurant I wouldn’t like the competition…. Booking is highly advised as understandably they are very busy.

Food was fairly good quality, service whilst busy was polite. Had a nice atmosphere, although some of the service was rushed. More vegetarian options needed!

Decent food nicely served. My only criticism is that I'd like more choice of wine by the glass.. December 2024. The wine list is much improved and the front of house excellently conducted. Food is still very good too.

A lovely restaurant for a dark wet night. From the welcome through to the dessert the staff were authentic, friendly and helpful. Even to the point of singing Happy Birthday to me. Speak Welsh if you can, "Diolch"goes a long way. The food was tasty and plentiful. I would certainly recommend a visit if you are in Porthmadog. I will look forward to going there again.

A very cold and wet Monday night was made a whole lot brighter by a visit to this excellent restaurant. Called in without a reservation, but was made really welcome in a bustling dining room. Had a locally brewed beer, the scallops and the delicious steak pie and went home full and thoroughly cheered up. Highly recommended

Last minute booking for myself and my wife, they were absolutely packed and yet managed to get us a table for and evening meal,and what a meal. Parsnip and coconut cream soup (amazing) pate (lovely). Steak and mushroom pie and mash(presented lovely, cooked perfectly and tasted out of this world), vegetable wellington( vegetarian excellence) Creme brullee( home made shortbread creamy I've cream and the creme brullee stunning) Xmas cocktail was £14 but was so worth it. Staff were friendly and attentive but not overly so, not once did they come over to the table to ask about the food whilst we were eating( a pet peeve of mine) but you knew they were keeping an eye on you even with a room full of Xmas parties. It was under £100 for the two of us which included 3x beers and the cocktail which given the fact I'd paid £85 for a similar amount in a local pub a couple of weeks before, which was ropey at best, I thought was good value. Id definitely recommend this place to anyone and I'm a fussy one when eating out is concerned. Thank you 'Hen Becws'

This is our second time eating here this year, we returned because this restaurant is outstanding. As soon as we entered the door we were warmly welcomed and shown to our table ( pre booking is necessary as this place is really busy and deserves to be). They even known we had been before and welcomed us back. Drinks order taken promptly and arrived really quickly. The food arrived quickly too and was outstanding, I had steak which was beautifully presented and tender. My husband had the belly pork and he commented the same. After our meal we were welcomed to another drink and certainly did not feel rushed out. Wholesome tasty food, fresh, well presented, interesting flavour combinations all served by attentive but not obsequious staff. Customers lingering over their food always a good sign. Highly recommended.

I booked into my room earlier & also reserved a table for this evening. Wow, amazing room, clean, comfortable & spacious. Food this evening was amazing, a great job from the chefs, cheers. The front of house staff were equally friendly, professional, and knowledgeable 12 out of 10 for these guys. I hope my tip reflected my sheer delight i experienced at an amazing three courses and a bottle of shiraz.

Small, pleasant restaurant with friendly, efficient staff and service. Good excellent. Our choice was: starter #1, pan fried smoked salmon with free range poached egg and hollandaise sauce Starter#2, asparagus and red onion soup, warm artisan baked roll. Mains#1, Thai beef curry and rice, served with naan bread. Mains#2, slow cooked pork belly with crispy, and I mean crispy, crackling, Fondant potato, tenderstem broccoli, carrots, apple jus (to die for) and rich sumptuous gravy.

My good lady and I were on a 5 night break in the Porthmadog/Portmerion area. After experiencing a couple of mediocre evenings dining out, I decided to seek somewhere a bit more special and started my search online. I was attracted to Yr Hen Fecws Restaurant. Whilst in Porthmadog, we walked to the restaurant albeit we knew it was closed in the daytime. We viewed through the window and spoke of the lovely setting. I phoned later (after reading published open times) to book for the following evening. A very pleasant lady accepted our booking & kindly reserved our preferred table which we selected during our peeking through the window earlier. On the evening, we were warmly welcomed by a very pleasant gentleman. Shown to the table and took our drinks plus food order. WOW! The food was superb coupled with good wine. All staff were brilliant. Friendly, efficient and professional. The restaurant was filled with fellow diners within half an hour of us arriving. These too were friendly and chatty. We suspect the majority are local regulars. Before leaving, my good lady & I agreed it had been a superb evening, so we requested a repeat reservation for the following evening. We were asked: "same table"? Such a positive "can do" attitude. We turned up for our second visit & once again enjoyed another superb meal, drinks, company and extremely brilliant hospitality. the food in the restaurant was quite good, not amazing but also not awful. a bit pricey considering the quality. but the service was awful. the young adults that were in charge of serving and front of house were awful. some of the worst service i’ve experienced and it let the food down. it felt a lacking in training, so maybe not their fault, but also not ours. we won’t be going back.

2 night stay in b and b, lovely room and a great breakfast. Had a meal in restaurant on 1st night which was also great, lovely staff and atmosphere. Half the price of travelodge and premier inn, which i also looked at and much nicer. All in all lovely relaxing peacefull stay.

As always a great and cosy restaurant, the service was impeccable. The only reason I have not given 5 stars is because I have eaten here before and had the Pork Belly, which was served as it should be, square oblong with crackling on top. We received a pork belly strip that looked like it had come from a pack of 5 Oak Farm strips from Tesco's. Shame to stumble at the last hurdle. Apart from that, highly reccomend.

What a wonderful meal we have in this charming pub. The food was exceptionally prepared. It was hot and served in a timely manner. The hostess was attentive and accommodating.

Excellent venue with great food. We found this little gem by accident after taking the wrong turn down the little street. From the outside it looked slightly more upmarket than most in the area. Booking is highly recommended as it’s only small. The menu is varied - something for the meat eaters to vegan and a specials board. Generous portions, and everything cooked to perfection.

Can not recommend highly enough. Absolutely fantastic experience. Service and food top class, one of the best meals we've had in a long time. Will definitely be back.

This must be the loveliest restaurant in Porthmadog, seriously don't miss a visit here if you possibly can! It is small, so you do need to book. We came here for our 30th anniversary and were given a table by the window and treated like royalty. Our waitress, Eleri, could not have been more delightful, sweet, welcoming and attentive. All of the staff were really kind and friendly and kept wishing us "Happy Anniversary"! I had the duck and I can honestly say, apart from quails eggs at The Ivy, was the best meal I have ever tasted in my whole life! Wow! The flavours were absolutely amazing and it was cooked to perfection. My husband said his beef curry was delicious. We had such a very happy time and were so pleased that we decided to celebrate here. 100% delighted with this place, thank you.

I was part of the same group of golfers as the previous reviewer, and very much concur with everything he said. The food was fantastic, the service was extremely attentive, the staff were super-friendly and I can’t wait to go back there. Highly recommended!!!

We stayed here at the end of the Llyn Path walk, and we were very well looked after. Dinner in the restaurant was fabulous, and the team served up good food, wine and atmosphere. We had nice starters, some great fish, and managed a pudding between us! The rooms were comfortable, and the breakfast set us up for the day.

Had a lovely date nite meal here on Friday with the man and the food was absolutely amazing. I had chicken my boyfriend had the steak. We absolutely loved it the staff let us move too table near the window the staff where great friendly and very helpful. This lil place is definatly a must visit we will absolutely be back loved it.

What a lovely restaurant! We booked last minute after searching for restaurants on trip advisor. Wow, food and service was excellent! Great choice, freshly cooked food and all wonderfully presented. Would highly recommend and hope to visit again.

Fantastic stay, rooms were cosy and comfortable and the room facilities spot on, breakfast was amazing with plenty to choose from, delicious cooked breakfast all freshly cooked and a wide selection of llaeth y llan yogurts some of which can’t get back home. Overall an amazing find.

This restaurant serves some of the best food I have had in many a long year. Staff are extremely attentive and make the whole experience run so smoothly. You will have to book, but it's well worth it. We found prices to be perfectly acceptable and the chef is so good at his job. 5 stars all round.

We came for dinner on a Friday night. The venue itself was lovely and cosy. The staff were friendly and we had no problems with the speed of service. That made it more of a shame when the food wasn't great. For starters, we had a goat's cheese and caramelised onion tart, and olives/bread. The tart was a pretty simple square of puff pastry, some onion chutney and a slice of goat's cheese. Fine. The bread with the olives wasn't great. Quite dry and didn't seem fresh or good quality. For mains, we had the pork belly with chorizo mash, and the duck with dauphinoise potatoes. The pork belly was fine. Although, the meat was slightly over done and the gravy and purees had developed a skin from being left out too long. I was asked how I'd like the duck cooked, be that well done or 'pink'. I chose pink, but what I received was overcooked - not the slightest bit of pink and entirely grey. The carrots were also overcooked and needed to be pealed or scrubbed better. However, the dauphinoise were lovely! The pleasantness of the setting and staff saved it from a worse rating. The food isn't worth the high price tag.

Just left the restaurant. Really good food. Scallops with cauliflower puree, black pudding and belly pork. Followed by duck cooked really well, carrots, crispy parsnips and potato dauphinoise.

Had a fantastic meal here, my partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the wine! The Malbec was superb, The Thai fish cakes were delicious, and didn’t contain prawn which was ideal for me. I had the hake which was a replacement for the halibut, but, oh my god, good choice. Perfectly cooked and so tasty. Also my favourite fish. My partner had the fillet steak, he said it was lovely. Service was good, and not to intrusive, which is what you want when you eat out. Overall a fantastic night. Thank you.

A georgous little restaurant in Gwynedd, and in Porthmadog right near the harbour. An acceldade to the provision of fine food cooked at its best. Our meal was very much appreciated, the service was second to none and the wine choices clearly thought out. This isn't overpriced, and the quality of the items brought in are clearly executed with experience from within the trade. It's well executed and well cooked and well presented in all aspects of the house. A very big thank you as our second meal here was an exceptional experience and would like to say thanks to the GM and the rest of the staff including the kitchen staff. Your doing it right, and the whole thing amounts to a great place to visit, and a feel good moment for your time in Porthmadog, North Wales.

Stayed here overnight with my friend the room was lovely decorated and clean We went the restaurant for our evening meal we both Had surf and turf which was beautifully prepared and I have to say it's the best steak I have had in a long time the Cognac sauce was a beautiful flavour and the triple cooked chips were again delicious. We had one of the specials for a starter which was muscles and sourdough bread this again was delicious . We both had a full breakfast the local sausage was so tasty. We could also help ourselves to fruit salad yogurts and fresh juices., selection of jams. This was a beautiful breakfast and was in with the price of our room which we thought was amazing as there was no expense spared with the food and it was all freshly cooked. The staff I cannot fault in the restaurant and the b&b all of them were so friendly and helpful I would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting the location is excellent with a beautiful harbour just a couple minutes walk away

As we stayed the night, I have written about our expereinces in our review of the hotel. Just to add that we had read reviews of this place prior to booking. This place thoroughly deserves the excellent reviews it gets. Great service, delicious food and value for money.

Staff are friendly and helpful, but thats it. Overpriced food, overpriced wine. The portion of lamb was very small for £25. The wine wasn't good either at £39 per bottle. Breakfast was ok I guess, I would give it 5 out of 10. But overall this place is very disappointing.

Beautiful restaurant, calm and relaxing setting. The staff were great and so patient and knowledgeable about the menu. All so welcoming from the moment we arrived. The food was top tier. Pork belly, steaks and scallops all cooked to perfection. Thank you for a wonderful evening Yr Hen Fecws.

Great find will return. Amazing produce served deliciously with very attentive service. A real delight would recommend. Superb rib eye steak. Scallops, duck all extremely tasty. Puddings a difficult choice as so tempting. Lovely wine choice. A real gem.

Booked in to here at very short notice and although I only stayed 1 night it was superb. The room was spotless, the staff are down to earth and the breakfast was one of the best I have had at a B&B, nothing bad I can say about the place, don't forget your vacuum cleaner LOL private joke. I would recommend visiting and would like to go back soon.

I have eaten in fine restaurants in this area. This was easily as good. I have to write more here to reach the 100-character minimum, but there is really nothing else to say.

A pleasant dinner, served politely. Undoubtedly the best food in Porthmadog. I thought that the Thai fishcake starter was particularly good. It would be nice to have more choice of wine by the glass.

On our continuing jaunt of winter wonderlands we stumbled into the Yr Hen Fecws Restaurant in PorthMadog North Wales. It is Friday evening (19/1) and the welcome banishes all thought of the cold outside. The food is sublime in its overstated simplicity. The wine list full of good reasonably priced wines and the service is very very professional with a a friendliness that will bring you back time and again.

A warm and very attractive space with excellent service and lots of character. Food was very good as well, and an appealing menu. The host is a delight!

Decided to visit this restaurant based on the reviews as not local to the area. Must say it didn’t disappoint. We had lovely food and our only gripe was we were looking forward to a crème brûlée for dessert but they had run out by the time we got to ordering! Perhaps that was testament to how good it was! Staff were helpful and friendly especially the chap who was possibly the manager - he was hilarious. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Had a table booked on a Saturday night. The restaurant was very busy with a few large parties eating. The atmosphere was casual and relaxing despite the place being full. The serving team were organised and very friendly. They helped with any menu queries. The food arrived in good time considering the number of people who ordered at the same time and two or three large groups. Mains were amazing, cooked perfectly, large portions and very flavoursome. The team gave enough time for everything to be finished before clearing and not a scrap was left. Desserts were clearly hand made, delicious and also a large size. We had dinner at Castell Deudraeth the following night and agreed that Yr Hen Fecws was a better meal, value, and overall experience.

An attractive old building between Porthmadog Harbour and the town. Very pleasant, quiet ambience. Interesting wide ranging menu. My cod was delicious and my husband enjoyed his Vegetable Wellington. (There were also a number of meat dishes). I'd thoroughly recommend this restaurant.
