Youngers Fish Bar in Cardiff

We wanted to try this place to see what it was like. Positives: Cod was excellent and batter very light.Unfortunately there are more negatives than positives:Price was extortionate: 2 small cod, large chips (which was actually very stingie portion), large sausage in and batter and small curry sauce came to a staggering £16.90 which is way too expensive!The small (large portion) of chips we soggy and undercooked. Some still were crunchy raw. This is a basic for a chippy!You charged 10p for a paper bag that I didn't want as I brought my own reusable bag. It's not the 10p, more the sustainability of giving out all that waste unnecessarily. Suggestion: Ask your customers 1st if they have their own reusable bags before just charging them for something that creates unwanted extra waste and cost.The booking system isn't fair on people turning up without booking theirs 1st. The wait is too long.Unfortunately Youngers you fell short because of your high prices and soggy, uncooked chips.There are better chippies in Cardiff so I'll be going back to my trusted favourite and won't bother with you again.A shame as I've just moved close to Youngers and thought you would become my local chippy.

Absolutely delicious. I am fussy with cod and batter. This cod had a real light coating. Inside the takeaway it was fresh smelling, clean oil. I'm sorry I didn't find this place years ago. Best fish I ever tasted and worth every penny. Hard to find any fault.

Following a few hours of shopping in Cardiff, we decided to visit Roath Park on the way home. Whilst in the car, we used the online app to order fish and chips. The app was easy to use and the food was ready when we arrived. The person who served us was very welcoming, and the food was still piping hot when we reached Roath Park. The portion sizes were excellent and the food was very tasty. The fish was cooked perfectly with a crispy batter and the chips were amazing.

Best fish & chip shop in Cardiff! This is a jewel in Cardiff’s crown when it comes to fish & chips. The App is so easy to use and efficient. You always get good quality fish with lovely batter and the chicken nuggets are the best (say my kids!). Lovely owner who has hired staff how are friendly, professional and just good at what they do! Ordered via the App which was so easy. Went to collect at time specified and our fish and chip meals were ready on time and beautifully cooked - batter was light and crispy, chips were crispy and really hot! We all agreed it was the best fish and chip meal we have had for years!!! Thanks all at Youngers.

In my opinion it’s the best fish and chip shop I’ve ever eaten from. The fish is superb and the batter is non greasy, light and crispy. Fresh and delicious.

Youngers is by far THE best fish and chip shop in Cardiff. I ordered a large cod supper (£9.45) with the fish lightly battered - this came with a side of mushy peas I also ordered a small curry sauce. The fish was spectacular - skinless and boneless with white and fleshy meat and a delicious light crispy batter- chips were cooked perfectly (well done not hard and underdone like many chip shops offer) - with some colour and great flavour. Mushy peas were by far the best mushy peas I've tasted for a long time - Youngers make their own so the peas are not a luminous green colour but a more natural mushy pea colour . Curry sauce was also good but tbh the fish, chips and mushy peas were a total triumph. Portion size was perfect. Great food, great service, great place. Would love for them to have a delivery service but I understand that these services can be costly for small business - I'd like Youngers to stay in business making first class fish and chips for a good long time so am happy to get make the journey over to get arguably the best fish and chips in Cardiff.

We don’t indulge in fish and chips very often, but when we do, we opt for Younger’s. There is no better takeaway fish in Cardiff.On this occasion, we booked online but mistakenly submitted too early a time for pick up. On arrival, we were told that they’d tried to keep the food warm but were sure it was spoiled. They then offered to cook us a fresh meal as they would be unhappy to send us away with substandard food. Five minutes later, we walked out with our freshly, perfectly cooked fish and chips for three. Delicious.Thank you Younger’s - wonderful as ever.

I popped in to Youngers Fish Bar this week and enjoyed their weekly special which I have to say was fantastic value.For £5.50 I had Cod Bites, Chips and a pot of Indian Curry Sauce. The portion size was just right and I was able to polish most of it off.The staff were really friendly and helpful. There was a steady flow of Customers which is always a good sign.I'll be back soon to try their Plaice!

La primera vez que fui allí bajo la nueva propiedad hace un par de meses, un miembro del personal me dijo que eran nuevos propietarios. Les dije que si era buen pescado y cocinado bien, volvería. Fue y he vuelto dos veces y esta noche el bacalao y las patatas fritas era fantástico, y tan bueno como he comido en cualquier lugar. Bacalao hermoso, masa fina y perfectamente preparado, y un personal excelente y amable. ¿Qué más se puede pedir? Volveré. Gracias a todo el personal de Youngers.

Great chips can be had here! They even have few tables if you want to sit and eat. I particularly like the Chicken Curry and Chips, the Hot variety is pretty warm.

The best fish and chips ever. Light and tasty batter, super white fresh fish and crisp chips. We all really enjoyed the meal and will be revisiting soon.

Recently bought Cod & Chips for three - we all thoroughly enjoyed the meal, not the cheapest place around but it is definitely a case of 'you get what you pay for' - the fish was beautifully prepared, crisp batter, not oily at all, and the chips were the best ever, even gold colour, no 'eyes' - perfect!!

I am a very fussy customer when it comes to fish and chips! However I have to say that Youngers are simply the business. Fantastic fish which is always fresh coupled with a light and crispy batter is served with excellent chips. Excellent work! :)

First off let me say the food here is very good, tasty fish and cracking chips that are good portion sizes too. I was starving before my visit and still only just manage to see off my meal.

I wouldn't normally bother to review a fish and chip shop but their are so few good ones, this place deserves a mention. The owners are relatively new. It was always good. But they have improved it. Previous owners hit getting it right 80% of the time. The new people are on a 100% with us after about 6 visits. And they are sooo nice, noticing on our last visit my Dad had trouble loading it into our shopping bag and offering to do it for us when we visited 4 weeks later. Amazing memory and much appreciated by my 90 year old Dad. Well done. We will continue our twice monthly visits!

X 3 GORGEOUS bacalao y papas fritas, salsa de curry y guisantes blandos más tarde, ¡estamos muy felices llevando bebés de comida reconfortante! El pescado, según mi madre, era "el pescado más bonito que ha comido en una pescadería" y ahora tiene 70 años, ¡así que creo que ha probado algunos en su tiempo! En la recogida, el personal es muy amable y eficiente. El lugar en sí es muy limpio y, obviamente, el propietario se enorgullece de los productos de excelente calidad obtenidos localmente y su precio es muy razonable. Después de una corta espera para que se cocinara el pescado, me presentaron una comida que parecía muy apetitosa. El pescado no tenía piel y estaba deshuesado con una masa que se veía liviana y crujiente, las papas estaban muy bien. Los entregué todavía muy calientes y dejé a la dama para disfrutarlos en su tiempo libre. Un poco más tarde, recibí una llamada para decirles que eran el mejor pescado y papas fritas que había comido (y eso dice mucho en más de 90 años) y que los había disfrutado tanto que realmente le había alegrado la semana. Ahora, sé que esto es probablemente solo una pequeña cosa para la mayoría de la gente, pero significó mucho para ella. Soggy Not crispy chips , Fish batter full of burnt crumbs , obviously oil not cleaned , black burnt couple of chips , cmon guys Top chippy ? Home made mushy peas , with artificial colour , bright like neon's. This place went down hill

1st class fish & chips yesterday, as always, but was v disappointed on 2 counts: 1. The sit-down meal was served in a cardboard box, rather than on a proper china plate, as used to be the case - unpleasant to eat from, and dead naff!; 2. V cheap plastic knives & forks have replaced proper metal ones - not only v common, but they are flimsy and child-sized, so not a pleasant experience. At a time when plastic contamination of 'one-use' goods across the planet is a massive issue, and recycling causes further environmental costs, these new policies are a retrograde step that will discourage me from further visits to Youngers

We’ve been coming to Youngers for over 10 years and never had a poor meal until tonight.

A big disappointment after many year of going to this fish and chip shop , after they got order wrong and I know I asked for fresh cod but £17.09 for 2 fish an chips was day like robbery can’t seam to work out what one would of been then after getting back to my father house the fish were no bigger then a small trout , been going there for 12 years when we in Cardiff see in family won’t be going again nor will the family.

Haven't used this fish shop for about a year due to a serious accident. I had the large fish supper which is not cheap by any means.very disappointed with the fish and the batter was rather soggy. I noticed a lot of new staff working there and made me wonder if they really knew what they were doing. Will sadly give it a miss in future.

We were very disappointed in our fish & chip supper which is normally delicious but yesterday we were served fish that had been kept warm in the heated display cabinet and the batter was very stodgy and the fish was watery and no substance, it did not taste of cod and did not look like cod. We will try again as this is the first time we have experienced poor quality as this establishment.

This restaurant is located on the very busy birch grove road. Parking is a nightmare so that is the downside. Let’s get to the meal and I must say the food was very pleasant indeed this is not a cheap chip shop but not many of them around these days. The meals were boxed and plenty of it as well. The restaurant offers meal deals and sure you will find one to suit. It has a few tables and chairs if you would like to eat in.

The fish shop has dropped in standards. They keep mentioning they are of high standard but in fact it has a star rating of 2!! Hidden in the corner of their window with an awful typed message underneath making a limp excuse.

I visited here a few days ago and had the best cod and chips that I have eaten in years. I chose the fresh cod and it was cooked to order. It was absolutely superb. There was nothing left.

Visiting Cardiff for the first time we wanted an inexpensive evening meal with our student son. This fish and chip shop surprised us in a couple of ways, we were offered the choice between fresh or frozen fish and if we would like lemon with our meal. Not the cheapest fish and chips but the service was great. The Youngers team were cheerful and happy to help, they were keen for us to have a great experience. On the wall were blackboards explaining the benefits of line caught fish. All in all an eye opener compared to the usual fish and chip shop, thank you.

It was treat day in work so we ordered fish and chips. We were treated with a very warm welcome, the fish was amazing so fresh and light crispy batter, and the chips were perfect not greasy at all, and the food was piping hot and fresh.Even one of the lads in work who doesn't like fish has now been converted he loved it. Bought 4 fish and chips from this chip shop when we got home fish was burnt and the chips were so dry my dad had to drink water to get them down .We rang the store and complained and they said next time your in we will give you 2 fish and chips back ,bearing in mind we bought 4 .A couple of weeks later I rang the shop to see if we could have our fish and chips and was told no we couldn't and we should never have been told we could in the beginning ,I said the boy told us we could come in and have them and they said well he shouldn't have .I put a review on their Facebook page and they were arguing with me over the review I couldn't believe it ,then the next day they deleted the review .I would never ever buy from this chip shop again .Terrible customer service and obviously confused with each other over what you can and can't have !!! .Maybe need to communicate more with each other maybe that's why the food was so bad .I have only giving this 1 star as there is a no star rating .A definite zero for me

Visit this chip shop a couple of times a month and always enjoy the food. Maybe a little more expensive than other local shops, but worth every penny for the extra quality. If you haven't been here, give it a go - you won't be disappointed.

Comida increíble. Soy un diablo pero el exigente con salchichas salchichas jumbo son deliciosos y se puede decir de una gran calidad. Pedí 2 peces pequeños, dos salchichas jumbo y 2 grandes y patatas fritas uno pequeño y aunque era para 3 adultos y 1 adolescentes creo que nuestros ojos eran más grandes de nuestra panza porque nos costó a comer todas las patatas fritas (conseguimos, porque eran demasiado bonito para desechos). Me encanta el personal que le bromas dejarán participar. Se puede decir que respeto el trabajo y otros. El chico joven que me atendió (tengo 40, así que todos son jóvenes para mí jajaja) era muy agradable. De hecho, todo su personal era muy alegre y simpático como siempre. Tuve una buena charla con Ben mientras espera la comida y es una leyenda (y yo ni siquiera pagamos a decir eso). Pd: te lo dije una vez Pablo sólo vino a su tienda porque leí una crítica y en la respuesta que no tenían miedo de stick para usted y su personal y tenía que probarlo para mí - muy contenta de haberlo hecho.

Paul, the owner has been consistently rude and unreliable to my daughter and i when visiting. Not allowing us to sit in and eat as they had 1 hour 15 minutes till they closed, i had only ordered 2 portions of chips. When asked for a reciept i was told "no. I don't have the time" Inevitably his lack of manners and professionalism got to much and i demanded a refund. He only refunded me 50% when i only ordered 10 minutes prior to me leaving.

I visited as it is our local fish and chip shop and ordered chicken and chips and cod and chips large cod I must add.When I went to pay i was asked if I needed salt and vinegar and I looked with great disappointment at the cod which was around the size of 5 fish fingers. For this I had to pay £7.20 and when I asked why they were amazed and said lots of people were happy to pay this amount for the same size of fish. When I got home the batter underneath was under cooked and very damp. I was not happy to have paid that. amount and that's being polite.Youngers is good quality normally but not in this instance but is always extremely expensive. Don't be afraid to complain as you are paying a lot of money compared to other chip shops in CardiffI remain very disappointed and I haven't been back since. Don't let that put you off, just don't expect too much for the money you pay.

Really great fish and chips every time I've been here. A bit more expensive than your average chippy but it's worth every penny. Nice to see a variety of fish available, with pies from an excellent local butcher (not the usual mass-produced stuff) and signs showing the sourcing of both the fish and spuds. Friendly and well informed staff. Keep up the excellent work!

Went into younger's with some friends last week after work. Walked in and they had some good music playing and the atmosphere was awesome. Up to the counter and we were greeted with a smile from Ben the manager. He recommended me the hake which I had my other two friends had the haddock. We ate in for free which is something a lot of places don't do anymore. Had our meals brought to us within maybe 12 minutes time. WOW, stunning fish i ate the whole thing and would have licked the plate clean if I could have gotten away with it. Trip advisor need to up their rating system because 5 star doesn't do this place justice. We will be back soon to try something else off their massive menu. Thanks guys . Ate earlier. The fish was beautiful! White soft fish crispy batter and scrummy chips! Husband had pie which he also liked. We ate in and it was on a plate with real cutlery! Unusual for a chippie! Staff friendly and helpful. Will be back when in the mod for fish!!!!!

We order almost £60 worth of fish & chips Monday evening when we served up the food they hadn't put the pie in or any wedges of lemon for all the fish ....we left a message Monday night explaining what had happened and asked the manager to call us back we had no reply .....not the best customer service such a shame as we order large amounts of Fish & chips regularly .

Ordered fish and waited for it to be cooked. Had a bit of banter with the lads asking about the pensioners special. Got all our products home, fish excellent, chips appeared a tad anaemic. I will mention next time I'm down in Cardiff because this is the 3rd time I've had fish chips from here but the fish has been each time excellent.

Being raised in Yorkshire fish and chips I struggle to find anywhere that compares ...But i love this place and it's almost as good as Yorkshire fish and chips. Plus close to work when we fancy a rare treat

When my wife and I last visited Youngers we found the food to be nothing short of excellent, however, at lunchtime on 02/04/17 I visited them again and how times have changed! After a 10-15 minute wait, the takeaway meal was finally ready. When I arrived at home. I was very dissaponted in the size of the fish, regular it was'nt, minute it was! The chips weren't much better, there was lots and lots of potato off-cuts and lots of unedible blackened chips. I paid top dollar for this food and expected so much better and seeing a regular sized Haddock and a small portion of chips came to @ £6.40 it certainly did not reflect value for money, at the time of this visit.. .... Will vote with my feet and try somewhere else next time.

This chip shop charges the earth for food which is good food but can be found equally as good but half the price within a couple of mile radius. When talking to the manager about price only, he was so arrogant he told me to go away and that I knew nothing. As a consumer his attitude was extremely arrogant and this man has no place in customer service. I have eaten from there once to see what it was like but will only buy from my regular, nearby in Whitchurch Road. If you like paying twice the price carry on but mind his attitude it is extremely poor.

these really are the best fish and chips in Cardiff. All the food is freshly cooked and the batter is light and crispy encasing very fresh fish. the chips are good and on certain days gluten free options are available

we called into this fish and chip shop as I was told it is very good and they were right this is probably the best chip shop in Cardiff. The fish is fresh every day and cooked fresh, you can eat in or take away. If you like fish and chips this is worth a visit

Been to Youngers many times and the fish and chips is brilliant. Always top quality food and well cooked. Staff are friendly as well. Top of their game!!

Spur of the moment, decided to drive up here and try as it has been awarded "best fish and chips". Nice that the fish is made to order - though in fairness there are a lot of chip shops that do that now. Nightmare to park, went round the block once then hubby had to drop me off and go around again. Ordered small cod and chips and at £12.62 for two portions a bit pricey as the fish was small. Came in a box with a wedge of lemon, the chips were ok, not greasy but included a lot of hard ones . Overall not bad, but in my opinion not the best in Cardiff either.

I have a confession: I tried some other fish and chip shops in Cardiff. I was wrong to do so and have returned to Youngers. By far the nicest I've had here - great staff, super food and prompt service. Give it a go and then realise why I returned!

Youngest has been around for a while and has won awards for its fish and chips. All fish is cooked to order, the source of the fish is displayed, as is the variety of the potatoes being fried. The staff are knowledgable and friendly. You can eat in or take away, get hot and cold drinks to go with your meal, roll and butter, mushy peas etc. Highly recommended.

Had a large cod and chips which was over cooked and dry. Paying double the price of most other chip shops in the area I expected more. Portions were also undersized (see attached picture, that's a large cod which cost £7.12 on its own) Very disappointed, will not be going back.

Always fresh and perfectly cooked. Staff give great customer service.Yes you may have to wait for your order but that is because everything is cooked from scratch. The food is well worth the wait.

We decided to have a fish and chip supper as a family treat. One of us had scampi and chips, the other two had haddock and chips: we all really enjoyed our meals. Some reviewers seem to have complained about the price; but we would rather have great food at a fair price, than pay a bit less for something that isn't nice to eat. We'd definitely recommend Younger's and I'm sure we'll come back again.

Now I know I shouldn't say that when I haven't tried every fish and chip shop in Cardiff but I have tried a fair few and Youngers are definitely the best that I have visited. Staff are a real entertainment and had me and my daughter in stitches with their banter. Very efficiently organised, taking fish orders ahead of the rest of the order so that they can cook it freshly. I personally am happy to wait for freshly cooked food. Plus I am happy to pay a little bit more to get the quality that Youngers provide. Have promised my daughter a trip here on Friday as a takeaway is a real treat for us and it's top of our list!

Good quality chip from this establishment, keep up the good work. Friendly and polite staff who take pride in their work. Well located with a parking space usually on the street outside.

Little on the expensive side for a chip shop but the fish is cooked to order and the pies are deliciously tasty with plenty of filling. Chip portions could be bigger for the price you pay but are always fresh and tasty.

I ordered a large bag of chips. £2.75 - just for the chips - I thought that should be large enough for two to share. After 5 minute wait, chips arrived. The bag wa so small & light I assumed I'd been given a small bag in error. But, alas, no - it was, indeed, a large bag of chips. The smallest "large" bag of chips I've ever seen, as well as being easily the most expensive.So small, in fact, I ordered a second "large" bag, for a total of £5.50 for two small bags of chips. And when I got home, they were not worth the wait. Too many tiny little cut-offs, not enough proper sized chips, and a few rotten bits of potato that had not been winkled out prior to frying.All in all, a most disappointing and expensive experience.

The Sweetpea girls order food regular, We never have anything bad to say about the place. The food is great and the service is even better, all the staff are friendly and polite. :) Great quality of food. Love Sweetpea x

Had heard that this was a really good fish bar and disappointed that the experience did not live up to the reviews. Am not normally a complainer but felt had to on this occasion. Staff friendly and polite and after some confusion about the type of cod we bought a small cod, large chips and mushy peas. The chips were in a box and when we came to open them they were not very fresh, had some very dark chips (obviously earlier batch) lots of small hard bits of chip and the portion was tiny! We paid just over £10 and feel that it wasn't worth the money. Sorry we won't be coming back!

Our son aged 9 was invited to experience working here and he had a fantastic time. Really knowledgeable interesting staff. Fresh line caught fish. Offer gluten free twice per month. To end his session we were both treated to fish chips and mushy peas. One cooked by my son. The best I've had in Cardiff. The owner also does an awful lot for charity and the local community. We will definitely be back.

Have visited a number of time and have always been impressed by the choice of food, the standard of cooking and the friendly staff.On our last visit we realised we needed to get some extra cash to pay, and they were very happy to still take our order whilst we went to the cash point rather than pay a card handling fee.Would recommend this fish shop to anyone in the Cardiff area, they are clearly worthy of their awards.A pleasure to visit.

Very rude reply in response to an easy and polite question regarding the ingredients for one of their products. We are customers who want to spend our money in your business. I was shocked at the attitude and not caring attitude which is worrying from an owner of a food premises.

Appalled by the rudeness of the staff.Never going near this place again! They show no loyalty to their customers and are extremely unhelpful when asked questions about dietary requirements.

Extremely rude staff here (and I think the owner), verbally attacking an individual on their personal food choice. Have known several people now over the years to come out of this place feeling unwell for days - I think it is in need of a visit from environmental health. Not worth going here, take your business elsewhere.

Visited here a couple of days ago, been feeling rough ever since! After the good reviews I was looking forward to trying it out but unfortunately it was disappointing on all levels. Took ages to get served, staff were cheeky/rude, food was greasy and to top it all off me and my wife were both quite ill a couple of hours after eating. I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

We've been a few times in the past but wouldn't call myself a 'regular', but have never been disappointed. Super efficient and prompt in taking the orders and I've never had to wait too long for the food.All freshly done and good quality. We'll be back.

Called in for fish and chips on a very damp Saturday afternoon. The cafe area was very busy and a few people waiting for orders , ordered and seemed to wait for an excessively long time for what was realistically 4 orders ahead of ours I haven't timed it, but it really did seem a long wait. When we got home with the food the fish was still hot but the chips were at best lukewarm and pretty obviously the last of a batch consisting of a lot of bitty ends of chips. For the first time in many visits I have to say we were disappointed with the quality.
