Ty Madeira in Cardiff

Tried this place tonight on a recommendation, great food, great service, thanks a lot. The quality and flavours were amazing, portion size is good.

Food was good with lots of choice of fresh meat and fish. If there was a dairy free options on sauces then it would've been 5 star and great 😊

Nos encantó este restaurante antes de su re-ubicación. Fuimos a cenar esta semana. Primero, el filete solía derretirse en la boca. Ahora, son promedio - usted encontrará mejor en su pub local por la mitad del precio. En segundo lugar, solían servir pequeños cubos de patatas increíbles. Eso ya no está. En su lugar, sirven trozos de patatas fritas grasas que saben peor que las patatas fritas pobres de un chippy. Ya no se sirven verduras verdes con su pedido. Sólo coliflor frita gorda y esos asquerosos trozos de patata. Tenía mejillones para empezar. ¡4 de ellos estaban sin abrir! ¿Qué chef sirve mejillones sin abrir a sus clientes? Sé que parece que tienes muchos mejillones en el plato, pero ¿qué hay del veneno alimentario? Absolutamente impactante. Un camarero parecía que acababa de levantarse de la cama y todavía llevaba su pijama. Pensé que era un cliente mal vestido. Casi me caigo de la silla cuando lo vi sirviendo comida. No me importa la decoración o el hecho de que tuvieron que mudarse. Sus estándares cayeron por debajo de lo aceptable. Tantos otros lugares que sirven comida increíble - seguro para comer -. Definitivamente no volveremos.

Quality of quantity… This is what happens when you take a lovely authentic restaurant and slum it in the middle of a busy centre. Too busy, staff unable to keep up, lots of mistakes with orders! food seems rushed with no love, drinks are full of ice! Prices are high! Madeira used to be a nice romantic/ relaxed dining experience that was always a pleasure now it is just over packed, loud, the food does not compare, it is definitely not relaxed, it’s get you in and get you out feeling, I guess since upsizing the money matters more 😔 the reputation of this place is not what it once was. Sad to see what it has become.

Espedadas increíbles como siempre. Sólo bebidas de gripe, sí se puede tener agua de mesa gratis grande pero £ 5 para una Pepsi? Luego una pequeña copa de vino tinto de la casa a £ 8. 50 ? Probablemente la razón por la que la mayoría de la gente no va a los restaurantes ahora mucho, es solo precios tontos, una vez al año para nosotros y se quedará una vez al año, pero no la relación calidad-precio ahora comiendo fuera... vergüenza

After arriving in Cardiff I looked for an attractive restaurant and ended up here. Got a table without a reservation (for almost two hours). Very friendly staff, good selection of top quality food. The preparation of the food and the waiting time were fine. Not too long and not too short! We were pleasantly surprised and left the restaurant very satisfied.

Had a nice evening here. Food good. Service good. A sour taste left by the £19.95 charge for a starter portion of cured ham. I ordered this as it was flagged up on the specials board. no price was shown but my cursory glance at the starter menu didn’t flag up any concerns. I was a bit surprised then to see on the bill that the cost of the starter was £19.95! When I queried it with the waiter he pointed out that that was the cost on the main menu. Sigh. Ok. But why put it on the specials board without a price ? If I’d known , I would have chosen something else. This plate of a few slices of cure ham cost less than a fiver than my course. It wasn’t a special as it was on the main menu. It was just a dirty trick. Makes me think less of you guys.

Called in while having a day out in Cardiff. Ordered the 2 Course Lunch I think was £17.95 which is great value compared to other restaurants in Cardiff. Food was really good as was the service waiters so friendly. Had Garlic Mushrooms and a Chicken Portuguesa Main both excellent. Will definitely be returning.

Amazing experience, loved the food, we were made to feel very welcome & well looked after.

Be aware if you have a medical emergency it’s not the place you want to be! We are usually big fans of this place and have been coming here for years, however after last night we won’t step foot in the place again. Just as the food was brought out to our table, a family member had a medical emergency which required ambulance assistance and a stay in hospital, staff were asked to call an ambulance due to us having no signal at the time to which they sent out a first aider to assess the situation. A short while later an ambulance was called and the first aider and bouncers were great in helping us with everything we needed. Other Staff members were no help I understand they had other customers to attend to but it was hard to even get a glass of water quick enough. Whilst stood with the Ambulance crew and police a member of staff interrupted and asked us to come and speak to the manager. The manager was unprofessional and unsympathetic, arguing that he wanted us to pay full price for the food we hadn’t touched in the middle of all of this. He then offered to take one or two things off the bill. I understand that food was wasted however the food hadn’t been touched when this had happened. We were happy to pay for drinks at the time or sort it out the next day as we had to leave when the ambulance was about to depart. I understand that as a business this is a loss to take however it was handled in such an unprofessional way to which the manager wasted 10 minutes of our time arguing back and forth about us paying the bill. He could’ve at least offered to sort it tomorrow or just said don’t worry about it you need to go. 3 times I mentioned he was wasting our time and we needed to leave. He had contact details for us if he needed to contact us later on. Baring in mind they had already had a 70 pound deposit off us plus the money for the drinks. Safe to say they weren’t any help in a horrible and scary situation for us to be in as a family and we won’t be returning which is a shame as we have ate here for many years and haven’t a bad word to say about their food or service previously.

Love coming here. Always friendly staff, we were very lucky to be able to be fitted in tonight on a Saturday. Attentive staff. Really good prices, food absolutely gorgeous.

Ty Madeira remains consistently high quality in its food, wine, and service. One of my favourites, and not just in Cardiff.

Visited with friends, we were all very impressed with the restaurant,great food, lovely atmosphere. The staff were very friendly and helpful . We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals which were tasty and of good proportions. We will definitely return .

We had our lunch with these delicious fish food. Scallops, Halibut, Prawn and Monk Skewer with delicious garlic butter. We had potato and cauliflower as side dishes with the fish. Service was good , thank you.

Visited for a works Christmas meal and once again the food was absolutely delicious (sorry I didn't take any pictures) service was outstanding and the atmosphere is amazing .. highly recommend this restaurant

A group of 18 of us on a "works do" arrived at Ty Madeira (pre-booked) & we were seated very quickly. Orders were taken promptly (although we'd already pre-ordered our starters & mains earlier in the week) & food arrived quite soon after. I had the garlic mushrooms, which were tasty but not very strong in garlic flavour, followed by chicken skewers, which were absolutely delicious! The chicken was moist & succulent & good portions, although I would've liked some kind of sauce because everything was dry (side dishes of crispy potato cubes & fried cauliflower). The waiters were very efficient, attentive & pleasant. Considering the noisy chaos of our party, especially when we were all ordering from the vast dessert menu, they were also very patient & fun! I had the lemon meringue, which was the best I've eaten in a long time. The atmosphere at Ty Madeira is relaxed & the service is extremely efficient. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meal & had a lovely time. I'll definitely go back again & try some other dishes.

Very bland food unfortunately but service and staff were excellent

This place has gone down hill. What was once the pinnacle of restaurants in Cardiff has now shrunken to whacking some fish on a plate with a side of concrete potatoes. The fish was too salty and I was desperate for water. The place was louder than a night club. Please change the potatoes.

Food here is absolutely divine, top class cuisine, delicious, I cannot give this place enough praise, food is 10/10 ..

My friend and I went for Lunch at 1.00 we were promptly seated at our table, the restaurant was busy, I ordered the Mixed Espetada and my friend ordered the chicken espetada, both came with potatoes and battered fried cauliflower, we both enjoyed our Espetada. For dessert, I had the Raspberry Pavlova and my friend had the Portuguese Custard tart, considering the price of the dessert I felt the portions were very small and they were over priced, the waiters were very attentive and friendly.

A great for authentic Portuguese cuisine, prepared and served by a passionate, enthusiastic team. I had mushrooms with prawns for starter and pasta with beef for main. My colleagues had the hanging kebabs. Highly recommended.

The meat hanging from the ceiling melts in your mouth. A delight from the staff. If I go back to Cardiff, I will go again.for sure

We ate here as a group of four on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was full so a good job we’d booked in advance. We ordered a mix of starters and then some sharing platters/skewers. While there was an abundance of meat and fish, the sides were a little light. The staff were very helpful and very friendly and provided an excellent recommendation on the red wine. Will definitely come again.

Lively atmosphere, authentic tasty food with estapada meat skewers hanging from the ceiling, and great service. Looks good for groups too.

I've been to Ty Madeira on a number of occasions and enjoyed it. However have never been on a match day. Set menu was £42 per person, I asked for the scampi and beef skewers. I got 5 little bits of fried scampi and spoon full of salad on the side. We then waited some time before getting 4 bits of tough beef, on a plate, not even hanging. I was sat on the end and by the time the potatoes and deep fried cauliflower came to me there was none left. I asked the staff for some more and was told that there was not any cauliflower left. I was brought a small bowl of potatoes and some rice I instead. £42 for 5 bits of scampi, 4 bits of beef, rice and potatoes is not value for money. Please don't waste your money on match days at the Madeira.

Went for the office group Christmas dinner which was priced at 40 per person. Very crowded in the restaurant which is always a good sign that the food might be good. Was disappointed however in the quality of the food on the day. I had the sardines for starter which was burnt rather than grilled properly but honestly that was the best of the lot. The espenadas were massively disappointing as that is the signature dish. The lamb was really overcooked to the point where any amount of gravy couldn't soften this. Pastel de nata is a Portuguese tart - again I would recommend the ones in Lidl over this one. Guess if you have enough alcohol and good company the food quality is often forgiven and that must be the reason for the crowd.

Fell across this restaurant after bumping into a friend in St Marys Street who recommended it. Food was superb, I had the lamb kebab which they hang on a large skewer above your table. Meat was cooked perfectly to order and came out medium. Very reasonable prices for the quality of food. Fantastic staff, very polite and attentive. Would I go again.......100%

I can't recommend this place enough. Excellent food and professionally presented. You won't be disappointed.

So disappointed with our visit, we hadn't booked for Saturday lunch but dropped in on the off chance and got seated in what looked like a holding area. Large groups were directed passed into the back room which wasn't full but sounded lively. Admittedly, we haven't been since they moved into town centre but the food in Guildhall Crescent was always great. We ordered hanging kebabs and battered cauliflower and it came with a side of potatoes. Both sides looked and tasted as though they'd been sat around for hours, then reheated and the meat wasn't great. I'd rather they'd have told us they were fully booked than provide such a dreadful meal.

Return visit with everything still as 5 star as before. Newly tried the cataplana (monkfish and prawn) - superb and generous portion. Mushroom and prawn starter is just incredible.

The service was awful. I ordered completely different things from the ones served and ended up paying 10 pounds extra, but that’s not the worst thing. The food was actually good, but the way I was served was just NOT right. The bartender took my order and he was very unwelcoming and not right for the job

I really don't understand the high reviews here. VERY expensive for what you get for example a three meat skewer £24 it comes with zero sides of sauces these are extras. The meat was like chewing on leather the sauce that was ordered was like tomato soup and a side that they said they can provide because we had 10+ people was cauliflower...we had a bill for over £450 and I personally wouldn't have paid half everyone had some issue with their food. Bland under seasoned over cooked etc. Do not recommend

Absolutely brilliant celebration meal. We went to celebrate a number of birthdays, and could not have picked a better place. The food was really good, the staff were so friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere was very lively - it seemed as if every party was celebrating something. We will definitely be back.

I am so dissapointed, this place used to be absolutely lovely, now it is absolutely average. The staff are mostly still lovely, the wine waiter was not happy. The chicken dishes we chose were grim, the cauliflower was over fried, re heated saute potatoes., the artisan Potugese bread was in fact a white bread bun soaked in garlic butter, what a dissapointment. No one asked us about the food, so here is the feedback, dreadful. We shall not return and I am sad

Nice environment and overall very friendly staff. We ordered two Espetadas. They were good, however my high expectations and experience with traditional espetadas from Portugal had me wanting and expecting more.

Ordered set lunch at £16.95 with 2 courses. Starters (Grilled Sardines and Avocado Vinaigrette) were very good. We had Sea bream and Hake pan fried for Main courses. They were also delicious. Really good value for price.

Ci era stato consigliato da amici gallesi e ci siamo trovati molto bene. Propongono un menù turistico a 17 sterline a persona con due portate a scelta tra 6 antipasti e 6 primi, soprattutto di pesce. Abbiamo provato le sardine grigliate e l'orata alla brace, davvero ottimi. Il servizio è impeccabile, particolare menzione per il nostro cameriere Miguel, un ragazzo spagnolo molto bravo e simpatico.

Ten out of ten ! Amazing service. , amazing food ! We had scallops cooked to perfection - 28 day aged fillet which was unbelievable and we had 3 children who were treated amazing by our waiter . Even before we had eaten my husband already wanted to come back again. We both had the hanging kebabs which were fabulous and the cauliflower in light batter was delicious. The service was also amazing . We booked for 4pm on a saturday on a glorious day in Cardiff and the restaurant was really well managed and we will definately go back again.

Food was very underwhelming, had scampi to start, I’ve had better at my local chippy! Lobster spaghetti for main, not cheap. Only about 6 small pieces of unidentifiable fishy stuff in a pile of ordinary spaghetti, didn’t taste like any lobster I’ve ever had before and I LOVE lobster! Also it was a beautiful sunny day and we asked to sit outside but were told that we couldn’t.

Having just attended our daughters graduation, we decided to go for lunch. This place is a real find! Super attentive staff and a delicious reasonably priced menu, there really is something for everyone. If you're looking for authentic and tasty Portuguese food with a great atmosphere give this a try!

We had planned to go to this restaurant for about 2 years my due to recommendations, but just never got round to it because of where we live & trains. What a shame we didn’t find this place earlier. The food was spectacular, recommend the ‘beef inferno’ (mild spice, compared to the dish title but sooo tasty). The side dish that totally shocked my wife & I was the battered cauliflower. The sautéed potatoes were average, but we ordered a side of sweet potatoes & garlic mushrooms which were lovely. Our table was booked for 6pm. Quiet on a Monday when we got there, but it soon started filling out. There was a birthday across the way & the staff did a Portuguese 🇵🇹 celebration which was nice to see the small details of going the extra mile. Be aware of the percentage of the red wine as my wife needed a helping hand out lol! Can’t wait to return!!!!!

👌 Before visiting this restaurant, I had already organized it through Google maps, I had a great adventure of going camping by bike from London to all over Wales, this beautiful restaurant with a wealth of good atmosphere and good service, excellent restaurant, good food rating 10 I will return with friends..thank you very much

I've visited this restaurant a few times and the most recent visit was the best. Food was superb, and was matched with great service.

We booked mid-afternoon which wasn't really necessary as it wasn't busy so atmosphere was lacking. The food and service were excellent and I heartily recommend a visit.

We stepped in to have lunch. Overall we had a good experience, though I felt a little rushed by the waiters to order, despite the restaurant not even close to being full. Food was good, not impressive though.

The restaurant is quite long. The food seems very fresh, you can observe at the counter the fresh food they have. The restaurant also offers fresh variety options of the day. The restaurants serves traditional Portuguese food. The food was quite delicious and served in an unusual way which made it interesting. The staff members were quite nice. There is access to bathrooms. The food was delicious and would recommend. The food style is different to Le Monde but it as well serves good food. Someone was celebrating birthday at the time so they used a traditional Madeira festival sound maker which was quite festive.

Few negatives on this occasion. It took nearly 20 mins to take our order and the service wasn't as it usually is which is disappointing. The wild mushrooms and prawn starter was lovely. Very tasty. The ribeye steak was too fatty (more than just marbling) and the potatoes were slightly overcooked. I was tempted by the special menu which said to ask about the 28 day matured steak. When I was taken to the counter to see the different steaks, one was recommended to me but it was £86. Or I could have had 500g of ribeye for £55. Too much really

Superb food. Staff are attentive and passionate and will recommend/explain anything you need. Instead of having mains we chose a few starters and shared. Food is clearly freshly cooked and if I lived closer than 4hrs drive away I'd be a regular customer!

Very busy Saturday night visit. Food was very good, 2 had beef which didn't have any fat on it all all, 1 had chicken. All enjoyed. I had chicken tymaderia, a breat in a cream sauce, was very nice 2. Side of potatoes and cauliflower in a soft batter. Would go again.

Authentic madeiran food, incredible delicious and reasonably priced. Great service - all the staff were friendly and very attentive. I’d highly recommend the mixed seafood starter and beef espetadas - absolutely wonderful.

A great family run place to eat while in the centre of Cardiff

Ty Madeira in the heart of Cardiff on St Mary Street is always worth a visit. The staff is friendly and accommodating, but sometimes it takes a while for them to take care of you. The food is very tasty and attractively prepared and is definitely worth the price. We have been here several times and have never been disappointed. However, you may want to reserve in advance during peak times. Otherwise all that remains to be said is: Obrigado!

Went for lunch and had the set lunch menu. I gad grilled sardines to start and chicken Portugesa for main. Really good value at £16.95. We washed this down with a bottle of house white wine. Would recommend.
