Food is very average. When you enter the restaurant, their way of welcoming you is bu using thiser fingers to call you and point at the seat where were suppose to be sitting. Must say one way to make you remember. And why service charge??? For what??? For grumpy faces and treating you like nothing??? A lot of restaurants in chinatown needs to sort themselves in terms of service, quality and standard. Until then AVOID.

If you are looking for an elegant, formal or classy Chinese meal, or an elaborate dining experience look elsewhere - that's why we have Hakasan, Royal China and many other places. If, however, you want to taste the real simple basic Chinese food the way it is eaten in Asia, walk in, eat and go, Young Cheng is your place. The food is authentic, tasty and never fails to surprise.Service is what you would expect in a place like this, fast, not overly friendly and always reliable. Do not expect three star dining experience, as this place is not trying to deliver it.My only problem is that many dishes are not listed on the "Western" menu, so it was only after many meals there, when once eating there with an Asian friend, that I realised the place has most delicious and authentic Char kway teow as a special, but it was only advertised on the walls in Mandarin pictograms. So, talk to servers and inquire about dishes not displayed on the main menu. And get ready for quite an extraordinary and authentic if not too sophisticated experience.

FREE tea, FREE soup and very affordable food. This is the only place we go for quick single-dish meal when we're in the Chinatown. Don't judge the place by the size - it's supposed to be a "fast food" restaurant! Fast food in the sense that the food is cooked and prepared with speed and delivered to your table in no time. Food is always served very hot no compromise for the quickness. If you're a couple or go there alone expect to be seated on the ground floor. You will have to share tables with strangers. If you go with a group of 3 or more expect to be seated downstairs. It may seem a bit cramped especially in the "storage room" tables but the food and service will quickly make you forget all that.

So, this is one of most authentic Chinese basic diners in Soho. Being authentic means that it is like Hong Kong - crowded, your dinner is almost thrown at you and there is no time for sweet-talk waitress service. Good food for great value, although presentation and service are not tops. Always hugely busy at 1pm, so best to come off-peak. Savvy Chinese or cognoscenti customers know you get served fast and food is delicious. I often do a budget £7 lunch here of rice and BBQ duck and char siu pork. It's a steal.

Been coming for years and finally thought to put a review up as one of my top two in Chinatown (the other one is C&R Malaysian in Rupert court). No frills, down-to-business and quick service (like what you'd get in Hong Kong) which is my favourite kind of eating out by miles! The dishes are authentic, freshly prepared and tasty. It's very well priced. You can get a delicious mixed roast-meats on rice or hor fun noodles for 5.50. At lunch they give you a large broth soup and tea for free. One of the few places left that doesn't sneak in an "optional" surcharge of 10 to 12.5%, so I always tip. Recommended!

Went here last night with 3 friends after quickly looking on TA for a good place to go in China Town. We went for the set menu V2 which is exceptional value at £8.80 each. This included half a crispy duck (plus pancakes et al), 4 different main dishes & more egg fried rice than you can eat. We also got some starters on top of this set menu incl chicken & sweetcorn soup, seaweed, prawn toast & spring rolls. Add in 3 beers and lots of tap water and we only spent £15 each. What a bargain. The food was good, but not exceptional hence why I haven't given a higher score. We did have a rather good table, downstairs & almost in it's own room! Service was adequate. The main course dishes let this meal down, but perhaps (as I always find) we had eaten too much of the starters & duck. I would recommend, but would not return purely because there are so many other Chinese restaurants in the area to try!

I'm a foodie and I'm Chinese. This is not my favourite Chinese restaurant but it is my go to restaurant. I eat here about once a week for the last 13 years. I eat here more than any other restaurant in London. The food is unsparingly authentic Hong Kong Chinese diner food, just like how you get it in a Hong Kong diner. The quality of the food (eg the roast duck) is very good at a very reasonable price. For lunch, you get free homemade soup (this is the kind of soup that no other London chinese restaurant will serve - it's the real homemade soup that my mum makes) and free Chinese tea. Service charge is not included and you don't have to tip (but I recommend it and always do). Many reviewers will complain about the unfriendly service and the cramped seating. I understand their thinking here but if you grew up in China or Hong Kong, you will not only be unbothered by this but appreciate the authenticity of the atmosphere and service. This is the kind of service you get in a Hong Kong diner. Rushed, waiters yelling across the room, plates almost thrown down on the table. They are not being rude. They are just being Hong Kong casual and trying to move fast to get you your lunch fast. If you joke with them in Cantonese, they will joke back nice and loud and you'll have a lot of fun. I love it. The most authentic and best value Chinese food in town.

Young Cheng has quite a few other branches in Chinatown - this review is of the one in Shaftesbury Avenue. It is not the branch in Wardour St with the buffet nor the original one in Lisle Street. This restaurant has a Malaysian Chinese twist - hence you get really tasty Laksa Noodles for instance - look to the back of the a la carte for Malaysian dishes. The place is well known for its very good value rice plus roast meats - roast pork, char siew pork, roast duck, soya chicken etc. You get a really tasty ginger sauce with the chicken which is not to be missed. If you go at lunch time you get a complimentary soup of the day - If you havent had it before do not be put off by how unpromising it looks. It is delicious from the stock & stuff from a real kitchen. Most dishes are around £5-6 which is amazing value. The food is good. I have been coming to YC for more than 10 years so I hate to say that the service which could so easily be a warm Malaysian welcome has more and more become a sour & impolite grunt - its a great pity. Thankfully the food is still good so if you come, ignore the service , order, eat, pay & leave. Just follow this simple plan and you will be OK ! If you found this review helpful - thanks for the vote !

I've been coming to this restaurant for years - introduced many friends to it, and have been thanked for the recommendation. It always used to be great value - huge portions of good "home-style" food, massive menu, friendly, quick service. Even my mother (a Hong Kong Chinese born woman of an age where criticism comes quick and fast!) loved it.Unfortunately, on my last two visits, all this has changed. The service was so slow we had to ask for every bit of attention - the waitresses (we seemed to be using 3 different ones) were all distracted and not in the mood for working. Three of us had 2 courses each, with 2 of these having to go back as they were FRIDGE cold in parts (no, they weren't supposed to be). The food (even the hot stuff) just wasn't up to what I expect from Young Cheung. I've never expected a fancy dining experience from this place, but (based on previousy experience) I do expect a no-frills, honest Chinese grub, lots of it, and quick service with a smile.I suspect there's been a change in management and staff morale (both front of house and back) has gone down the pan. I really hope this is a temporary thing, as this was my default, quick, tasty eats venue for central London. Such a shame.I really hope they manage to pull it back and can take notice of this friendly advice to pull their fingers out!

Came across this by chance and not through recommendation or reputation. It is small but there are more tables in the basement. It was very busy mainly with Chinese people which is always a good sign in Chinatown given the choice. We were ushered to a table for two but beware: you could be sat with strangers if space is limited which is most of the time. It is very cramped. It is not pretty. It is busy and noisy. There are no frills. It is a busy establishment with a quick turnover. People walk in but if there are no tables they are brusquely ushered out and told to wait on the pavement till called. People simply shrugged and did precisely that so clearly they wanted a piece of the action irrespective. Still they did not have to wait long.No sooner had we sat down than two large bowls of thin soup were placed before us. These contained mainly vegetables but also tiny morsels of meat. It was tasty. A beaker of green tea was also brought and this is free. A set menu states that for £8.80 you get a bowl of soup, a main course and a bowl of rice so we thought we were on the fixed menu and ordered one main course each but as another reviewer has said, as we did not specify the set menu we got the "a la carte" for want of a better phrase, as such a term has no place here. Thank goodness. We were served an enormous bowl of sweet and sour chicken and an equally enormous bowl of crispy spicy shredded beef, accompanied by yet another enormous bowl this one containing boiled rice. The dishes were tasty and although we did our best to finish them we were beaten. For two, our bill was under £20 with change to spare, sufficient for a reasonable tip.It is true that service is not happy and smiling nor is it particularly polite or courteous but it is not rude. That is the ambience of the place. It is full of local Chinese people I suspect who are interested only in a cheap but tasty meal and the food and surroundings are no doubt similar to what they get in the old country. It is a cafe more than a restaurant, maybe the equivalent of a greasy spoon but the food is better than that. The majority of tourists will probably not consider contemplating going in because of its appearance but the more adventurous tourist who can spot a good thing anywhere in the world will walk in, as we did and a few other non- Chinese.Go in and enjoy reasonable food at good value and forget about the other peripheral non essential requirements you may expect from a more upmarket eating house. That way you will better enjoy the experience.

Main came out cold about a minute after having ordered. Never mind that I had ordered a starter! When I politely asked that I had also ordered a starter and would have liked that first, the rude waitress just said 'you ordered the starter after the main meal!' Yes, I probably had, but she took the order whole order in one go, so why bring the main before? It was obviously already sitting in the kitchen before we even entered the restaurant. She reluctantly took the plate back to the kitchen and soon came out the starter. Very average, tasted like I had got it from the supermarket. Another waitress reassured us and said the main meal would come out again after the starters. Not a second later, the first waitress brought the main out again before we had finished eating the starter. I explained that her colleague had told us we could finish the starter first. She gave me a really dirty look and refused to take it back to the kitchen. I gave up at that point. Unsurprisingly, the food was cold and rice was dry, so that was left on the plate. The other main meal we were expecting only came out half an hour after the first had been eaten, so they couldn't even get the timing right. No apology, no recognition of what restaurant service should be! I have never seen anything like it. Really annoyed to have gone into this place when there are so many others in Chinatown. I suggest going into Mr Kong next door. Really good food and never had any problems with the service. That's actually where I was heading, but made a really bad decision to try this one out. It isn't cheap, prices are average, so I expect to be treated with respect as someone who has chosen to spend my money there. I had to ask for the bill about 4 times before I got it. They really don't care about the customers and don't even try to hide this. From the way they just whack the food on the table like it's worthless, to the way they look at you when you question when something isn't right. The only positive thing I can take out if going there is that I now know the name and definitely will not be going back! Would advise others to go anywhere else but here. If I could advise the restaurant owner, it would be to teach their staff some good customer service. I can accept average food in a restaurant, but here it was the shockingly bad attitude I couldn't swallow!

in a day like today, I would say i was very lucky to find this little Chinese restaurant were the food was very good. We ordered several mains and of course we ordered half duck. Duck was superb. The other meals were ok. Service was pretty good and fast. the restaurant is really nothing special ( we also ended up in a little corner of the basement) but prices were convenient (we paid 15 pounds for a main plus a drink).I would definitely recommend the crispy duck!

First went here back in the 1990's as it was famous amongst London's Taiwanese student community as a good value restaurant for roast duck / pork / chicken with rice. I went there recently and the portions were just as large and served with a free soup and tea. The other dishes ordered though vere very oily and average. Will continue to visit, but just for the duck. The best time to go is early lunch or early dinner when the freshly cooked meats are first hung in the window.

Called in here after a show one evening. Admittedly it was quite late but the place was still busy so we thought we'd give it a go. Wish we hadn't bothered. Staff were rude and unpleasant, no friendly greetings just "what do you want" and "you need to order now, we are closing". Food was also sub standard. All in all a truly awful meal/experience.

We walked around and found this place before the show, it was packed and most people appeared to locals. The staff were polite and attentive. We ordered crispy duck to start, epic no complaints. Then we had a selection of dim sum: crispy squid, crab and prawn, and spicy vegetable, it was hot and very tasty. As we were still hungry we ordered beef chow mein to share, again hot, and utterly delicious. The meal came to £44 with beers.Superb meal, attentive staff, good price and delicious food.Thank-you.

This time we were served complementary soup with a glass of chinese tea.Served our mains, forgot what my partner ordered (sorry) but i had my usual cha sou and crispy pork. This Young Cheng in Shaftsbury Ave is not a buffet resturant like some reviews are claiming and it does not serve dim sum clearly they've written it in the wrong Resturant. This is a little place with some seating on ground level and a few more in the basement. Be prepared to share tables, this place is great for BBQ meats, pork, duck and soya chicken, great value for money too. Enjoy

Similar to the small restaurants/coffee shops that you find in Asia and mainly Hong Kong where you get seated at any available seat.Have always used this restaurant whenever in London as it is good hot food and a plate typically costs an average of £5/6 including chinese tea. My partner who is also Chinese loves this place when he feels homesick. My favourite dish is crispy pork and cha siu with rice. However of late i am finding the service of food hit and miss and in that when i am there on my own at lunch, my portion seems smaller to other asian diners and when there is free soup being served at lunch, on two occasions i have never received it and yet is given only to asian diners and other caucasian customers were looking around to find out why they were not given the soup. This occasion with my asian partner, we both received soup and also a bigger portion. We also love the chilli that you can add to the food subject to taste. On this occasion we both felt that they have changed the chilli being served as it is not as nice as when we were both there last time.I hope sincerely that they are not discriminating with the ethnicity of it's customers and will keep you posted on my future visit's.

Visited here last night. Very small selection of food. None of the food is labelled so who knows what was being served. Some chicken meat was cooked well, others had traces of blood. Most of the food I had was overcooked. It was less than £6 for the buffet and is open quite late. Also be prepared to pay for tap water if you request that. Not a bad place to fill yourself up for a few quid but expect low quality food.

40 years ago while living in London for 3 years, this was my favorite Chinese restaurant. At that time, it was called The Good Friend. Although the name has changed, the ambiance and quality of the food remains excellent. The chef still cooks many of the soup noodle dishes in view of the customers in the store front window. My favorites are the shrimp dumpling soup and the lemon chicken. The cusine may not be haute or fusion, but it is authentic. As the numerous asian customers present verifies. Also the prices are very reasonable for London. They also give a free beef broth soup with most dishes.

We visited on a Wednesday lunchtime and were somewhat taken aback to be served soup and a drink almost immediately upon arrival, without having ordered it and without any explanation. We subsequently discovered that it was complementary! The soup was good. We ordered a few dishes (sweet & sour chicken, chilli beef, fried noodles with beef and egg fried rice) and the food was good. Not the best we've had in this area of town but better than average. The prices were very reasonable. The service was quite abrupt and not as friendly as we usually expect. I have been to this restaurant a couple of times, but probably never again. The food isn't too bad. Very nice crispy duck, and reasonable quality chicken and beef used in other main dishes, which is not always a given in Chinatown. Perhaps the best recommendation is that 80% of the diners present are Chinese. So why only 2 stars I hear you ask? Because they sat me next to the bar upstairs where there was the continual clattering of china as plates and bowls are unceremoniously dumped by a sink for washing. I don't mean occasionally, but continually with no regard for any customers sitting nearby. I actually started to get a headache it was so loud. The service is also quite surly, although I don't hold this against them, and is pretty much the norm in the area. If you do dine here either sit downstairs, or at the front area upstairs well away from the bar.

Ate here early evening. It's by far the most revolting Chinese food I've ever tasted. The corn kernels soup tasted like dirty dish water. I wouldn't be surprised if the Chinese beer had been watered down- the prawns dish had an odd flavour so didn't didn't finish it. Service surly ( surlier than the norm for Chinese restaurants in Chinatown). Staff kept bumping against our chairs. Had to sit in sub zero temperatures (it was the coldest week of the year in London) because staff couldn't be bothered to shut the door after each customer entered. A very unpleasant experience and a total waste of money, even though it was cheap. I've eaten in all sorts of restaurants offering meals at all prices and have never before eaten such poorly cooked and presented food (except for one occasion when I went to a Thai restaurant last year which fortunately has breathed its last).

This mantle has now passed to Young Cheng. You get a bowl of scary looking soup/stock without asking but persevere as the flavour is good even if large mutton bones look scary. Very good single plates with all Cantonese and Malaysian favourites for around £5.30 including tea and soup. Went into Young Cheng today and ordered half crispy pork half barbeque pork, for which the guy taking my order didn't understand. Then my brother tried to make them understand by saying it in Chinese (we're not chinese) and they didn't understand, THEN the waiter literally rolled his eyes and sighed and made a face. It's not our fault he doesn't understand English. I made a gesture showing that it's half and half... he didn't understand. My brother said '1 portion crispy pork 1 portion bbq pork on 1 dish'... he didn't understand. So we paused while we thought of what to say...which prompted more eye rolling and sighing. Then the waiter said in an irritated tone to me 'You said half and (pointing at my brother) you said 1 portion so which one is it?' So we said half and finally he understood. By now we were quite angry but it's not worth a fight so we took the food but swore we'll never come back here again.I've been to a lot of 'horrible' restaurants where you wait 1 hour with no food, and bad service etc. but NEVER had a waiter roll eyes, made a face, and sigh multiple times. This is LITERALLY THE WORST SERVICE I'VE EVER SEEN ANYWHERE, not just in restaurants. In terms of food, the pork had a bad smell to it. It wasn't that cheap. The atmosphere was horrible, like eating in someone's shabby dining room. Will never be back.

Y no defrauda.

But the food was fantastic and could see why the majority of the people eating there were Chinese. We had the set meal for 1 or more on the seperate menu which meant we chose a soup, a main course each and had plain boiled rice. The soup was delicious. The main dishes were big and had a big bowl of rice they kept refilling. With a pot of Chinese tea that they kept refilling cost us less than £10 each and left feeling full and satisfied and having ate genuine tasty Chinese cuisine that many of the cheap buffets nearby fail to deliver.

We had spent about an hour walking around the Chinatown/Soho area looking for a nice meal, there was just too much choice! Stood deciding what to do outside the restaurant, a passer by tells us he's been eating here for years and it is an excellent restaurant and reasonably priced - we decided to take his reccommendation and give it a go.... wish we hadn't now! We were taken downstairs to a table and given a menu. The downstairs was pretty filthy looking and we could hear the chefs shouting through the kitchen door. I went to use the toilet, which was also fairly unclean and very cramped. We both decided to order our favourite Chinese food, Crispy Pork Rice. I decided to go for the Crispy Pork + Roast Pork combo. We also thought we'd try out the ribs and went for the Salt and Pepper ones. The price was very reasonable, under £6 per dish. Probably a bit too reasionable! We also ordered a beer each to wash it down with. The Rice arrived very quickly, before the starter. Tucking in, we realised the meat was COLD. Only heated by the warm rice underneath. We ate it anyway as we were hungry, didn't want to make a fuss and there was a lacking of service. I wondered if this was the way Chinese people actually liked the food as it seemed busy and popular. The ribs were deep fried, very tough and the batter was not nice. I was sort of enjoying the rice part of the meal until I found some rather dodgy looking mystery staining in the middle of it..... not sure what it was but didn't look too good. I nibbled the 'crispy' part of the Pork but was feeling rather sick after 5 minutes. My partner commented that he felt like it was going to give him food poisoning. I agreed. We couldn't wait to leave! When we got the bill which we reluctantly paid £23 for,we told the waitress that we weren't happy with the food and that it was cold. We were actually told that they leave the pork hanging around in the kitchen until someone orders it, then it is just chucked on some rice with some sauce - apparently if we had wanted it warm, we would have to ask for it to be microwaved! I would never go back there and would certainly recommend you avoid unless all you want is a cheap, crappy meal. Almost certainly the worst Chinese food either of us have ever eaten! I had serious heartburn and a stabbing pain in my stomach for 3 days after eating here. Maybe we just made a bad choice in food but I wouldn't be willing to give it another go.
