Had a lovely Sunday roast, roasties were lovely and fluffy and parsnips were delicious!

Had carvery was lovely good value and good service. Desserts were lovely.

Didn’t eat but we were made very welcome with our dogs. Lovely table by the river and dogs were kept fed with snacks when we moved inside. Chilled and merry when we left!

Ten of us went for Sunday lunch yesterday for a special birthday. The carvery was awful. The small piece turkey was dry and had obviously been on the carvery station for a while. The vegetables were all luke warm. The roast potatoes and stuffing balls were not homemade they looked and tasted like Aunt Bessie's and the Yorkshire puddings were flat and crisp. All very disappointing. The only plus side was the lady who served us was lovely and changed our dinners with new vegetables and refunded some of the cost. I wouldn't repeat the experience sadly

Good points were it's easy to find easy to park, the service was good and food arrived quickly. I had a really good steak, 8oz Sirloin. Really nicely cooked at rare, pretty much just melted in the mouth and no gristle. Partner had Scampi which was nice. It got a bit weird here, she had more scampi than chips, not an exaggeration the tiniest portion of chips we have ever seen, there were 11. I paid extra for double chips, now with two portions of chips you would expect a big old pile. Not here, both the included and the extra portions together were at best a small normal one from anywhere else. We asked about cider but only bottles were offered, none on tap apparently. The quality of the food was very good but the chips were just embarrassing. It's a marstons chain and as there are many up and down the valley that seem to serve actual portions of chips, it's not something we will worry about again.

Excellent food, staff were always available and happy to help. Lovely pub in a beautiful location. Will be back again.

Came here with my partner for Sunday lunch and it was delicious. Everything cooked perfectly and wonderful staff, couldn’t ask for more! We will definitely be coming again!

Went shopping for a new sofa and fancied a spot of lunch. Great new menu, great selection of beers wines and non alcoholic drinks. Bar staff brilliant. Well worth a visit

Lovely friendly staff and a warm welcome. The setting is lovely with river views will definitely be back to try out the beer garden in the warmer weather. Great pub grub.

Had Sunday lunch here to day , only one thing to say it was awful couldn't eat the meat , veg was hard couldn't eat it no Yorkshire puddings either , worse Sunday lunch I've ever had , know there's new owners but you need to change chef or your customers won't return

Came in on the out chance of booking a table,the staff was wonderful. I had a tough decision with what to order of an amazing menu, I choice the kebab and fries and I must say it was the best meal I have had in a while! Many thanks to all

Had dinner there today never again all veg was frozen and plastic beef and after waiting for 15 minutes it came out and it was luke warm won't be going again it used to be a great place to have a carvery they don't do it any more

This pub has a gorgeous location by the river in the beautiful village of Ystradgynlais. We had a carvery meal which was plentiful and tasty. The staff are friendly and the facilities are clean and tidy.

The food was good but a little slow to arrive.

Very good value for money. Staff so nice and welcoming. We had mid week carvery and beef was melt in mouth good. But Yorkshire puds needed a jack hammer to cut hence 4 stars. Maybe a bit harsh..

Popped I for an impromptu lunch with a friend today. Absolutely smashing! Lovely friendly staff, good food, we had the chicken korma and fairly priced. Will be back for what looked like a great carvery soon.

Really enjoyed my ham & parsley sauce, however the steaks ordered were tough, my sister couldn't eat hers. They didn't charge us for my sister steak. Very young staff who I think were learning the ropes, all very polite, service could have been better. Will definitely be going again, lots of choice on the menu and as it's all new staff I'm sure service will improve.

Brilliant carvery, the dauphinoise potato and mash were standout sides. The meat was really nice and the portions were large. The staff were attentive and friendly. Great value for money with a dessert included.

Responding to Reply left on 9/Aug/2024: Hi, I checked your photos, and I can see it is the same venue. But I think you've had new ownership/staff since the incident occurred. I recently edited this post to fix some typos, and that may have reset the date on the review. This experience dates back almost 2 years, around 2022. Original Post: Arrived with my Disabled friend in wheel chair, and we had booked ahead to let them know, so they could make any reasonable adjustments. The woman had a terrible condescending attitude to us; it's difficult to explain in text here. The place was empty, so we asked if we could sit in a more accessible table because where she put us was not so accessible for a wheelchair user, but we were told NO with attitude, and a fake explanation about fire safety and insurance dictates that it MUST be this particular table, discrimination. We were extremely polite to make sure we didn't have our food contaminated. We looked at the very limited menu, and we're shocked at the high price of literally everything. The description of the available choices were poor and didn't say what it came with, so we asked "What is the Crispy Chicken, please?". Again, with attitude, the woman said, and i quote.... "The crispy chicken, is exactly that, it's crispy chicken. and it comes with a curry sauce as well, ok?" We looked at each other in complete shock, and couldn't believe the attitude, lack of care, or professionalism. There was nothing else on the menu that my disabled friend liked the sound of so he went with that, because you shouldnt be able to go wrong with a chicken dish! We waited nearly an hour before the food arrived, in which time we had to ask where our drinks were! I had asked for a Diet Coke, expecting a large glass, maybe a pint? No, my £2.45 Diet Coke was just a chilled 330ML can of coke! Anyway, the food arrived late. Most of the plate was salad, and wait for it... You wana know what the "Crispy Chicken" was? It was 3 Breaded Chicken things. Like Frozen processed chicken patties like what you get in a Rustlers Chicken Burger. I kid you not.... The curry was extremely spicy, and I usually love a Madras or Jalfrezi, too hot to be able to consume in polite company. and even if it weren't hot, it was too sweet and fruity to be enjoyable. She even came over to ask if everything was ok, but started walking away before we had a chance to give the obligatory "Yes thank you". It was awful, just so bad... From the moment we walked in, to the moment we left. Service was bad, the food was bad. Then, the funniest part was, as she came to collect the plates, she asked if we enjoyed, and of course, the obligatory "Yes it was lovely thank you", she said, "Lovely, do me a favour, and pop on to TrustPilot and leave us a positive review, will you?" There was a 1-2 second silence, which of course made me burst out laughing, which triggered my two mates, but we quickly stopped laughing because she just walked off. Thing is, we hadn't even thought to leave a bad review because we've never had anything bad to say about anywhere we've eaten. My mate is in a wheelchair, and unable to drive himself anywhere, so it's a treat for him to explore places, and try out new places he'd never managed to find the time for before his accident. And we've never been treated so badly. So yes, we thought we'd leave you a little review, and warn everyone what kind of service they can expect to receive if they dare book a table with you. Absolutely discussed with your lack of respect, rude service, and poor hygiene. The place was dirty, and had a nasty smell. I left hungry because we couldn't finish our food. Everything was awful, and I wouldn't be surprised if they go bankrupt soon because if they're like that with us, then no doubt they're like that with everyone.

Went here for a celebration 🍾 and the food was delicious. Inside the restaurant it was very warm. One of the hottest days!

My partner and I popped in for a impromptu Friday night dinner date and all I can say is that it was fantastic. On arrival we were greeted by the lovely mackenzie who was very attentive towards us and knew her role very well. Upon mentioning our allergies she promptly spoke to the kitchen and alternatives were made to accommodate us. I was very happy with the level of service that all the staff showed. Our second server Rees was also very attentive and quick with his service. We never wanted for anything and were always kept in good spirits. The food was perfect and I can't mark it down for anything. It's very rare that I give something top marks but it's well deserved. I will hope to be back soon with friends to enjoy an evening of good food and company.

A very laid back Friday lunch. Not too busy, you could have a conversation without shouting. The staff was excellent, very helpful.

Had a cavery which was lovely , staff friendly. Had a dessert but it was abit to dry for me sorry. But other wise a nice place to go too. And will return .

Sunday lunch carvery Staff very pleasant & can’t do enough for you reserved table for two, shown to table drinks order taken asked if we were ready to go up to get our lunch. Choice of beef, pork , turkey or all if you wish all veg cooked perfect plenty of homemade gravy & mint horseradish apple & cranberry sauce everything piping hot excellent value for money.

Delicious hunters chicken, the most amazing chips .. what let me down was the very small pot of slaw costing £3.99... and the garlic bread was more like marg than butter... Not the best

You will see by previous Google postings where we are from. Again staying at a cottage in the area in order to visit family and also to travel around. Visited your restaurant on a 'get a starter or dessert included' night. Speaking about my meal I chose a favourite of mine, smothered chicken and I have never been presented with one as plentiful as yours. The other meals were just as brilliant and so were the desserts. Thanks so very much for giving us such a lovely experience.

Dog and family friendly. We had roast from the carvery and it was very good value. Service was lovely and if you need to choose between free desserts, go for the rice pudding! 😉

We found the Ynyscedwyn Arms during a recent trip to Wales. It was in an ideal location and the food and service was excellent.

Very large menu. Lovely surroundings, shame about the rain but ideal for a summer evening outside. Best in the area, don't know why I'd forgotten about it.

Visited this place recently as riding past and it looked a lovely place to stop. The service from the staff was faultless and the food was first class. Suffice to say I will be a regular here from now on. Please keep up the high standards of food and service 😁

We eat here at least a week. We called in bar for food at 4.45pm to be told they don’t except walk in’s on a Saturday very disappointed.

My wife and I went for a carvery meal here on Wednesday and it was superb ! It was recommended to us by a work colleague and was well worth the visit.The lady who owns the place was very helpful and welcoming. We will definitely be coming here again.Great food and good value for money.All the staff were really polite and helpful.It was worth travelling from Maesteg to visit!

Delicious carvery, attentive staff, great atmosphere and so reasonably priced you could take the family.

Lovely food for adults. Sadly they would not serve scampi and chips for our child, even though its on the adults menu. Shame also the children have fries with their food. I was told by my daughter it was like being in McDonald's which she dislikes. Shame really as how can we go there again when children don't get the same TLC as adults ......

I must say, this place has one of the best roasts I've had and it's definitely worth trying. However, I can only give it a 3 due to the customer service: I made a reservation for the dog friendly area and when we arrived, they'd sat part of our party in the non-dog friendly area and were surprised that I even had a dog. Once tables were rearranged, we ordered drinks and, placed them on the tab they offered us, as well a cavery each, being told food was ready immediately. We chatted for a bit before going for food and were then pressured in to getting the food. A party member then went and settled the tab, but on the way out the staff swarmed around us accusing us of not paying, very humiliating. They rectified their mistake but not a great way to end the booking. Also, we over heard staff asking an elderly couple, who were half way through their meal, to move as they sat them on the wrong table - shocking.

We always used to come here for a midweek carvery but will never come back. We had to pay for 2 courses upfront before we even sat down. We didn't even know the options for desert but yet we had to pay upfront ... absolutely stupid. Front of house needs a big shake up. The young girl who served us clearly did not want to be there. Quite rude and abrupt. Slammed our desert spoons on the table and walked away ... only 2 choices of desert ... take it or leave it. When I went to pay for our drinks I was kept waiting. She asked me to bare with her whilst she was doing something which was fine but then when the phone rang, she answered that to deal with a booking and left me standing there for a long time. Absolutely no customer service skills. No receipt offered to us. You have to eat your desert there at the table. You cannot take away. And you have to have desert. Such a waste. Also please let us take our coats off and sit down before you ask what we want to drink and take our money upfront. Will never come back.

Had a superb Birthday Celebration here. We cannot fault the food. It was hot, plentiful, tasty and really well presented. There were four of us, and we ordered the chicken curry, lamb shank and rump steak, which were all exceptional. We had the apple crumble and rocky road sundaes for pud and they were delicious too. One of us ordered a starter, but it didn’t appear until after the main course. That’s the only criticism ….and the reason for the 4 stars for service. We did however receive an apology from the chef! We had a lovely evening and would return here for a meal without hesitation.

Me and my family went here for Sunday lunch, last Sunday at 2pm it was absolutely stunning the staff can’t help enough and there is a lovely Xmas atmosphere! The chef also the owner goes out of his way to make sure everyone is happy and satisfied he can’t help enough! The beef I had on my dinner was absolutely stunning tender and mouth watering would recommend this place to anyone , such a lovely warm atmosphere will definitely be returning 🤩

I wanted to contact the owner directly to leave a review, but no email. I also thought about leaving one star, but this seemed unfair given that we enjoyed the food. Thankfully they can probably remedy the issues quite quickly by changing a couple of things. Hands down the most basic and inattentive service I've ever received at a restaurant. No friendly greeting on arrival. We were seated at a table larger than our party size, it was half laid, the rest of the cutlery was dumped down by the staff member and she walked away. Had to ask to order drinks, had to ask to order mains, had to ask to go up for the carvery, all whilst 2-3 members of staff stood around on their phones. One had very long hair that wasn't tied up, which is basic food hygiene. I couldn't be sure if they were unsocial, or just lazy? The owner was trying to get them to disperse and actually work, which wasn't received very well by them. I felt for him. My advice would be to halve the number of staff - there was 4 - as the room was being managed solely by who I assume is the owners daughter who seemed motivated and was constantly moving. Save a bit of money and save your customers the discomfort of having disinterested staff members reluctantly serving them. Food was nice - plentiful carvery and the children's were excellent value, so credit to the new owners for this.

Owner was nice and friendly, however disappointed with the room, boiler in room which was noisy, bathroom not cleaned, Limited furniture, milk in room was set solid so no cup of coffee on the night...breakfast was very limited and all in packages...takeaway required as restaurant shut..

Within walking distance to where we live. Went there last year and never liked the food, now with new owners we thought we would try the carvery . Had creamy mushrooms for starters. More like a thick mushroom soup which needed heating up a lot. Found the carvery no better luke warm, meat dried out and peas not cooked enough.. what a disappointment. It's what you're used to I suppose we use to live in WSM Somerset and the Brent House carvery is one of the best in the UK. I like my food hot if it's meant to be...warm the plates would help .. what ever. We eat out a lot but won't be back here. On the plus side the staff were good

If you visit the restaurant, the roast dinner/carvery is a must. I had reviewed this previously with the old management, and was pleasantly surprised with the new management. We went for a Sunday Roast, and the new manager was extremely courteous and customer oriented. The food was as great as ever. Highly recommended.

Food terrible. I had chicken madras, watery , chicken all in cube shapes, supposed to be homemade but more like from a tin! My husband had cod, batter not cooked properly. Steak pie meat was tough. The only thing that was fine were the chips. We have had amazing meals here in the past. We are bitterly disappointed. No sparkling wine available either. The atmosphere has changed. Sadly we won't be going again.

The staff was ok, one waitress was nice and helpful. I don't know where to start not the best. I ordered a beer shandy they brought me a larger shandy instead, after I asked again for a beer I had a beer shandy. You had to wait a long time to be served. The food wasn't the best. Meat was tough and some of the veg was cold and as for the parsnips matchsticks come to mind. The same as my partner food. The dessert was a bit of a joke. A small bit of fruit grumble which wasn't to bad, the custard was stone cold and in a very small pot. Shame it was a nice place to have a meal at. We won't be going back in a hurry

4 people = 2 Gammon. 1 Regular Burger. 1 Lamb Burger(No sauce) Order came..Gammon needed to be cooked for longer. Fat around Gammon very undercooked. Asked for no sauce whatsoever on Lamb Burger. The waitress said it doesn't come with sauce but will make sure anyway. When cutting burger/bun in half to eat sauce oozed out. Not a little bit but lots. Pointed out to the waitress who advised they'd do a new meal. Brought the meal back and to our horror, they had wiped or even washed the sauce off and put it in a new bun. The manager (also cook/chef)was not willing to come and see us when we asked for him. When he eventually did he didn't find an issue with the fact that the sauce was there firstly and that he had wiped/washed the Lamb Burger. This ruined everyone's food and all meals were left with 2 with at least half full plates.

Lamb shank was amazing! Chef very friendly and accommodating.

Stopped here for a lunchtime meal with a friend, My wife and I had Chicken Madras Curry, nicely presented but the chicken in the curry was made from old dry chicken, I never complained at the time as the friend we were with recommended the place, Curries should be made with fresh chicken, not bits of old pre-cooked chicken

Lovely hotel, set beside a beautiful river so picturesque, we popped in today for lunch, we were warmly greeted by 2 lovely staff. The restaurant looked lovely and clean. The food was very reasonable price and so delicious, I had the minted lamb burger, the portion sizes are big and the presentation is superb. Little extras on the plate like homemade parsnip crisps were definitely a winner !! Compliments to the chef !! We will definitely visit here again, well worth a visit.

Under new management food good lovely staff friendly BUT table service leaves a lot to be desired waited 2minits to order then I had to ask if anyone was going to take it it eventually came after a 55 minutes unacceptable likewise had to ask twice for desert menu after it was ordered another 20 min wait hopefully service will get better to reiterate food was good when we EVENTUALLY got it

Both myself and my husband called in for lunch. So disappointing, new owners (which we have no idea who they are) we were shown to a table and given a menu...... And then we waited, after giving our order, we waited again. From the time we first arrived to having our meals it was nearly an hour. My husband had fish and chips.. It looked like a child's potion . It was pathetic, I had prawns and chips, the 7 prawns were really dried (over cooked) Sweet was OK.. Will we be going there again..... I don't think so... Under new management who seem to be experiencing teething problems with new staff who didn't seem to know what they were doing. They just seemed to be winging it. Food was ok, but not good enough to rush back for any time soon and a very limited lunchtime menu
