YHA Ambleside in South Lakeland

The food was lovely and perfect staff. Just could do with a wider selection on beer and ciders. Other than that great experience and good value for money.

Always a must in Ambleside. Great bar, great choice, great views and great service. We love it here.

We have visited this YHA numerous times to explore the hills surrounding. It is perfectly positioned with a fantastic outlook over Lake Windermere. The staff are always friendly and willing to help, nothing is too much trouble. The food is great and the beer equally so. Can’t fault it.

We called in and managed to get a disabled space. We were lucky I think the staff were doing the best they could to move the non disabled drivers. All the staff were helpful and friendly especially the man who took the food order. He apologised that I couldn’t order a pie because it was only mains on the evening menu that was desserts as well. I did manage to find fish and chips on the day menu. The food was well cooked and we enjoyed it. But I’m sure that a mains and dessert menu would go well at lunch time. It’s worth considering. The view is superb and the whole place felt relaxed and friendly. And good service. Just what we needed. Thank you.

This is a perfect spot for good home cooked food, great menu and view to die for. Just watched the sunset with a ringside seat looking over lake Windermere! Lovely staff too

Stopped off for a light lunch whilst kayaking on Windermere. The food was absolutely spot on! Great service too. Highly recommend.

We visited this place without reading the reviews. Sometimes, it’s best to make your own personal judgements without bias. Well, we should have read the reviews! We initially sat outside but it was a bit chilly so we moved inside. I am not sure how the place works but there were no menus outside so we had to get our own. We had no prior booking but the place was not busy so we sat ourselves down. My partner ordered cheese and ham toasty. Initially, we were told we could not order that because it was from the day menu. A kind man from the kitchen intervened and pointed out that actually it was only 17.01 so we could still order from the day menu. Service was reasonably quick but the quality of the food did disappoint. The bread tasted cheap and the sandwich itself was bland. I had ham and pineapple pizza. This was equally bland. The dough was hard and the base sauce used was not the best. For some reason, they decided to place one chunk of pineapple on each slice instead of spreading it all over like what everyone does. This made the pizza look cheap and it was hard to get any pineapple in with every bite. The ham was not the best either, it lacked freshness. To improve, I suggest they make their own dough or find a better recipe if that was made in-house. The chips were ok. I ended up finishing these and left half the pizza. The best part of the meal was the latte. I loved this! I later visited the toilets, these need regular cleaning. The floor was wet, the only saving grace was the hilarious sign behind the door!

AVOID AT ALL COST! Arrived with friends around dinner time on a rainy Sunday afternoon. We were told a few things were sold out, but were offered things on the menu that were available. Me and a friend ordered the Quorn vegan buttermilk burger with chips, for £16 pounds (!!!). What arrived was a dry white bun, with a quorn burger slapped on top of it. The burger itself had no sauce, garnish or lettuce, and it came with limp fries and a cold corn on the cob! Friends ordered pizza and it was clearly cooked from frozen packets. This is a budget student style restaurant at top level prices, and a great example of not trying because you have a good location. Don't waste your £££ here... To add to the story, three people in the party had just swam or kayaked the entire length of Windermere, so were starving and would have thought even the most basic food tasted delicious. It has to be pretty bad for us to be so disappointed...

What a great location, right on the lake beside the Ambleside Boat Jetty. Amazing views from the Beer Garden. Unfortunately the afternoon we visited, the bar was opening at 3pm (we arrived at 2.50), and then we were advised they weren't doing food due to staff shortages, only drinks. We decided, as we were already there, we would have a drink anyway while waiting for the boat to arrive. Good choice of drinks available at reasonable prices and friendly and welcoming staff. Overall not a bad experience, however it would have been nice to have had something to eat too.

The views are the only plus about this place. The food was subpar. Nachos didn’t come with guacamole as advertised and the salsa was basically tomato sauce. Pizza was worse than frozen pizza from the grocery. Would not recommend.

My partner and I just had a lovely meal here. Focaccia and dips to nibble on, then perfectly cooked trout with prawn cakes on crushed potato and grilled chicken breast with gnocchi with corn ju and parmesan crisp. Reasonably priced with good portion.

We have called here occasionally over the past few years. The views over the lake are superb but unfortunately on this occasion not matched by the quality of the food. The chicken leek and ham pie was mainly sauce with little filling, carrots clearly warmed up and quite rubbery, the broccoli was cold. Our other meal a chicken burger was okay but no more than this. A great pity really because the environment is one of the best in Ambleside.

Walked up to see the hostel which my partner and I stopped in over 40 years ago and found this lovely little restaurant. We ordered burgers. It was very busy but they were worth the wait, they were fantastic. The weather was perfect and we sat outside near the water on a beautiful sunny evening.

Went here for some reasonably priced grub. Prices didn’t disappoint. However, the pizza tasted and looked like it was store bought straight out of Tesco! Good customer service and the food arrived quickly. Unfortunately 5 Or 6 items were out of stock and off the menu! Overall, not a bad experience, good service from the staff and nice atmosphere. However it would be nice to eat pizza that I couldn’t buy from a store.

They suggest if you have allergies to ask the helpful staff I asked about Gluten Free and they didn’t know what I was talking about. It has GF in the abbreviation but not against any dish on the menu. The guy offered to ask in the kitchen but said it would be whatever they might have but nothing on the menu. Not really very helpful and certainly I was not prepared to risk eating there. Pity the view is fantastic

I feel a bit rotten about this because the place and staff were lovely but the food is pretty dire. Pretty sure these were frozen, and microwaved. The pie is mostly puff pastry and on top of some frozen mash and carrots (cooked of course)....

Stumbled across this gem by accident. Good hearty food at really good prices, wine £10 a bottle, even better still. ate hear for 2 nights and breakfast for 1 night, If I'm ever this way again, i would definitely use this restaurant x

We visited will our granddaughter and her boyfriend, who are both vegetarian. It was a great evening with good, inexpensive food and plenty of meat free options.

Had an evening meal here with my 2 boys. They had a pizza each and a side of fries. I had mash and sausages from the daily board. The pizzas were nearly £10 each, they were not very good quality, looked like frozen pizzas. Not delicious fresh wood cooked pizzas you would expect these days. They both had heavy dough, the pepperoni tasted very strongly of garlic. The mash and sausages were nice. Quite expensive, cost me £45 to feed myself and my 2 boys just for first course and drinks. No desert. Wish I had used the communal kitchen.

I thought I would struggle for vegan options on Boxing Day in the Lake District, until found The Lakeside Restaurant part of the YHA at Waterhead, with plenty vegan options and stunning views over Lake Winderemere.We chose a falafel panini each, with a portion of sweet potato fries and fries to share, with a Brewdog Punk IPA and some water from the refill station. The panini was great spread with the salsa, but a little dry otherwise, a dollop of houmous would not go amiss. The fries were delicious, especially the sweet potato ones, which hubby is not usually keen on, but he loved these and I had to fight him for them.Overall we enjoyed our lunch and would definitely revisit when in the area, it is great to see the YHA catering for vegans so well.

We love this place. It’s our go to place at the end of our day where we can get good food at a reasonable price and a sunset to remember

Lovely!! You all were so kind! I enjoyed the facilities and the food. I wasn’t home for Thanksgiving and it was a joy spending it with you all.

Seemed odd to visit a Youth Hostel location for a lunch, but do not be fooled as The Lakeside is a lovely restaurant/cafe with a good selection of very well-priced food and plenty of drinks choices too. Huge windows look out over Lake Windermere, so an ideal spot to enjoy a coffee or maybe something more. We really enjoyed the food, going for 3 'small bites' for £11. They were not small and by the time we had added a side order of fries, the two of us ate a good lunch for less that £7 a head. Great atmosphere in there too, with some hostellers in and out giving a real outdoor/adventure feel to the going's on. We will be back for sure. Go visit.

This bar/restaurant is attached to the YHA, in a stunning location, right on the lakeside, with large beer garden to take in the views and watch the boats/steamers on the lake. Good selection of drinks and a nice range of food from snacks to full meals - all reasonably priced. Staff were great, very friendly and efficient. Great value for money in a stunning location.

Mi esposa y yo llamamos para un almuerzo ligero, tuve el BBQ Chicken Panini y ella los Beans and cheese Jacket Potato. Tanto bastante simple como la mía era un poco escasa, pero soy plenamente consciente de que es muy barata, así que creo que valía la pena mi dinero, ya que en realidad era muy agradable. Vale la pena una visita con hermosas vistas al lago.

Hacen una bebida caliente y un pastel para 3. 95, que es una ganga. Nos sentamos afuera y disfrutamos de una hermosa vista sobre el lago. ¡Perfecto!

Was pleasantly surprised going into the YHA Lakeside Restaurant. Quality of food was excellent, service was informal and friendly... great value for money in a stunning location...

I ordered minestrone which was one step up from canned. Desserts were very pre-fab and too sickly sweet. It used to be much better which is why I'm so critical.

Right on the lakeside, close to where the steamers and launches sail from, the location could hardly be bettered. Coffee was fine. But the so-called paninis were dreadful. Fillings unrecognizable and sparse, bread flaccid. Avoid.

I am very surprised as my job being a international traveling chef I seen meany restaurant/ pub eatery. In this has just slid in to my top 10 the value for money here is amazing the food is full of flavour and even thogh I only had 3 small plates witch is an understatement by the way is a stunning place to spend an afternoon I will return if I am ever in the lakes again all This for 12£ approx 15$

This place does standard pub grub but at a very reasonable price, which in Ambleside can be hard to come by. Service was quick and the staff were friendly. We had the 3 for £11 deal to share and although the plates were small, I liked the food. The drinks are also reasonably priced.

We order to pizza we return to pizza. A total disaster!! I used to be a pizza maker. What they are doing overthere belive me it’s not pizza! Stay away please.

A beautiful location but very poor food. My 'chargrilled' chicken burger tasted as if it had been frozen and then microwaved. It was so tough and rubbery, and it really isn't a difficult meal to get right, so no excuse for such poor quality food. My husband's burger was very average, he said he's had much better elsewhere and my son's pizza was not very nice, the base was tough and topped with cheddar rather than mozzarella.

We ate here as was right by the lake and looked lovely - without checking trip advisor. Was not overly expensive but was not cheap. We had nachos with was ok, cheese and tomato panini which was just horrendous and a burger which was edible. What certainly won’t be eating here again.

Totally disappointed - rude service , worst meal I’ve had in years - my friends chicken had obviously been reheated and was inedible , my salad was half a tomato and a handful of lettuce no dressing I could of got better at Tescos . Even the coke Was flat . Considering the massive competition for the tourist dollar/pound you would of thought they would make an effort . Ive never left a bad review anywhere before and I’m sad I’ve had to do it now . The view however was stunning . But the meal quite spoilt our afternoon - there are literally 50 or more places to eat at Ambleside and we are so disappointed we wasted our energy walking all the way there and paying for a less than ordinary meal . Only redeeming feature were the French fries

It was a glorious day and we were in Lake District. After spending the afternoon at Grasmere, we sat down by the lakeside at Windermere.. the restaurant has a lovely setting overlooking the lake and the hills around it.. food was great.. I’d the pizza.. wife had a mixture of tapas style portions.. chicken, seafood.. and being part of YHA, prices were very reasonable.. the menu might not be substantial but quite adequate.. friendly staff.. highly recommended

We always come here when we are in Ambleside and are never disappointed.

We were a bit dubious about eating at a YHA restaurant but we were pleasantly surprised. Although it’s a small menu, we settled for the burgers, mine was chicken and my husbands beef. They were very tasty and we upgraded to sweet potato fries which were delicious. We sat at a table by the waters edge with a reasonable priced bottle of wine and it was an idyllic setting watching the sun go down.

If I could give a 0 star review, I would. Worst, nasty pizza ever. Crunchy doughy sweet base and awful toppings. Poor quality, poor taste and we were eaten alive by midges.

We went here last night for a cheap burger and chips and I thought that it was excellent value for money, it's around £7.95 for a burger and it comes with fries and a small pot of coleslaw on the side. The portion sizes were very generous, in fact I couldn't even finish mine! Looking around the restaurant at the other meals being served all of the portion sizes seemed very generous for the price but everything is so tasty. Don't let the cheap prices put you off, we went in not expecting much but this was actually once of the nicest burgers I've had! It's also probably the cheapest place in Ambleside to eat and drink. Highly recommended.

We popped in part-way round a local walk in order to shelter from the rain a bit. We only ordered coffee but it was better value than elsewhere in the area and was actually really good. Excellent views too!

Locals visiting for late lunch chilli nachos arrived with no jalapenos cold chilli and far too much cheap tasting salsa which drowned out any other taste there might have been. The pizza hadn't been cooked long enough it was very doughy unable to eat most of it ,kinda scraped off the topping to eat for £9+ it was an expensive pizza for what I was presented with amature hour! We are locals and won't be back. The Ale selection was pour and the one of two we chose was unmemorable by name and taste. An amazing view which was the only good thing.

We were staying across the road and found this gem when we decided to go in for a drink after dinner. It is £2.50 for a 25ml shot of Hendricks Gin (compared to about £4.90 at other places), and only £5 for a Hendricks and Tonic! Our hotel had a deal on Fridays for £5.50 g&ts;, so it’s easy to see how value for money this place is! The bar area is lovely, very well decorated. Beautiful views across the lake, incredibly friendly staff, very homely feeling but modern at the same time. Very impressed and will definitely return tonight!

The restaurants main attraction are the fabulous uninterrupted views of the lake in what must be one of the best vistas anywhere in Ambleside.

I have never associated YHA with food but the restaurant here was a pleasant surprise. Nice quality food at reasonable prices. Excellent real ales and very friendly and efficient service. Will certainly revisit.

The view is beautiful but that is the same from lots of places here and we stopped for food which is what the review is for.

This is a delightful place to relax. You can sit outside next to Lake Windermere, or inside where the view is nearly as good. Stop in just for a quick drink (alcoholic or not), for coffee and cake, or for a reasonably priced snack or meal.

Menu is limited but chilli special was nice as was the mushroom soup and nachos from the tapas menu . Some of our group's order got forgotten but staff were apologetic and compensated the very late delivery of their meal with a round of free drinks and coffee which was appreciated . The venue is well situated with great views. The conservatory provided the advantages of fresh air without the midges which were biting outside . Very convenient for youth hostel guests . We would certainly return for an easy meal option when staying at yha.

We had a tapas style meal with 3 plates for £11, which is great value. The food was tasty and the view of the sunset over Windermere was exceptional. The staff are all very friendly but there is a long wait for food. However, to compensate the waiter offered us a free portion of chips which was a nice gesture.

Apparently this used to be good but as my first time I can guarantee I won't be returning. The food is terrible, especially for such a hike in price, the pasta and meatballs 'special' was dry and tough like it had been reheated, I didn't realise it was still a challenge to some people to cook pasta as even uni students can cope with it. The garlic bread was equally disappointing being more like bread drowned in garlic sprinkles rather than garlic butter or anything resembling garlic bread, making it takes flat, wet and overly garlic tasting on top but nothing through, barely seeming to be cooked either. I strongly regret going and am glad I avoided ordering dessert up front. You even have to collect your own cutlery etc and for a cheap hostel that's fine but for a 'restaurant' charging £11 a meal it's frankly ridiculous!

After our boat-trip we had a bite to eat & cold drinks on which was an extremely hot June day . Food was ok & at a reasonable price , 3 tapa dishes £11 . We sat outside on their picnic benches to take in the stunning view of Lake Windermere .

Amazing location for a hostel. Beautiful dining area, very zen, right on the lake. Staff were lovely. Good quality reasonably priced food.

We were staying nearby and wanted somewhere to enjoy a coffee. We found the Lakeside and it offered tables on a wooden balcony overlooking Windermere. When we saw the food coming out to the other el fresco diners, we decided to order a couple of cold Corona beers (served with a wedge of lime) and shared three dishes - roasted Mediterranean vegetables with a flat bread on the side and a small pot of olive oil and balsams vinegar, tikka chicken skewers served with a side salad and the most amazing yoghurt mint raita and lastly, some freshly fried calamari, served with a side salad and a sweet chilli sauce. Heaven. The food was delicious and the service was good too with friendly staff. With soft music in the background, we could have stayed all day! I definitely recommend.

Great Location right on the lakes edge with fabulous views only had Coffee and Cake here which was a special price of £3.50pp unfortunately the Cake was Very Dry and appeared to be stale so would not recommend this but coffee was nice

Found this little gem as we wandered around Ambleside - sat in the sunshine on the benches around the lake which was glorious in the sunshine. Very reasonably priced we had the 3 for £11 tapas dishes and they were lovely. Would definitely return and recommend this place on a summers day.

A lot of the lakeside hotels nearby charge premium prices- this is a well priced place with decent beer, and a terrace overlooking the lake- evening views are perfect.It's busy though, and being situated within YHA it's full of walkers and climbers, so no dress code, but worth a visit for an evening drink as the sun goes down, or pub food.

Food was very good with the main menu but also daily specials.There was both indoor seating, seating on a deck and you could also have food brought to the picnic benches on the grass by the lake.The views are amazing even when it was raining!!

This hidden gem has some of the best views on the Lakeside. When the sun is sun is shining sit outside on the terrace. If not enjoy the view behind the large floor to ceiling windows. The limited menu is basic, pizza, burgers, sharing plates but is cheap and cheerful. Compared to other places in the immediate vicinity it offers excellent value, especially for young families. Highly recommended. If only for the truly outstanding views and the relaxed atmosphere. One of my personal favorites for a chilled afternoon!

Visited a few times, the first being summer 2016. We sat outside and enjoyed a simple but reasonably priced meal. The second occasion we ordered meals for 4 people and two meals failed to arrive. After asking staff we were served with cold food which had obviously been left in the kitchen and forgotten about so we returned said meals only to wait another half hour for replacements. Today we've visited again on a very quiet day, in fact we we the only two in the restaurant. We were told the chef wasn't in for another 10 minutes (strange at 1235??) however we waited. One meal arrived but again the second went missing. We sat in the conservatory and when our food arrived our waitress said, and I quote " you'll have to come get it, I can't manage the steps" no apology, no explanation. Very rude and inappropriate customer service. I think it's time to conclude we will not be visiting again.

Food not gourmet but tasty & quick friendly service. Liked the informal setting and amazing view over lake. Huge plate of nachos, chicken tikka skewer (bit small) really tasty Mediterranean veg with flat bread all for £12. Really enjoyed it!

We have eaten here 3 times while staying in the hostel. Both dinner and breakfast.The food is excellent well priced decent range of menu including veggies.All is competitively priced far better value than other places in Ambleside.You don't have to be a member of the YHA to eat here, and it is worth walking just out on the main road into the town to find the placeDrinks are very reasonable for both wine and beers.

We visited the bar in January for reasonably priced drinks as we were staying in the accompanying Youth Hostel. The bar / restaurant is open from noon for lunch (and meals in the evening). The bar has a lovely large glass fronted area that looks directly onto Lake Windermere and some tables outside too. In terms of food - we'd suggest that it's more bar (rather than restaurant standard) food.

Group of eleven reserved a table. We arrived and the restaurant was packed but we we welcomed by the YHA staff and the table was all ready for us. The drinks were very reasonably priced with good selection. We had pre booked our food which came out fine. One meal was missing but came quickly. Sadly the chips were cold but a huge bowl of hot chips came out to replace them. The staff were helpful and friendly and were working hard on a busy night. We all enjoyed our meals and thought the prices were good value.

Gorgeous food in a great location overlooking Lake Windermere - well worth a visit if you're hungry :-)

I stayed at the YHA so I had to dinner twice there, and the food was just delicious. I ordered a lasagna meat but was served a vegetarian Lasagna, I ate the salad before I realize it was not what I ordered and they offered to replace it by what I asked previously!

We stopped for a brew after ambling round Ambleside and decided to have a light bite too and we weren't disappointed. The cheesy potato wedges were light and crispy and the chicken strips were the same. All this in beautiful lakeside surroundings. Well worth a visit.

My boyfriend and I went to this restaurant on our first night in the Lake District. The views were pretty spectacular and the place had a cosy feel about it. There were limited tables outside but some tables inside showed the views as well. The food was really nice but don't expect anything special, it is essentially pub grub but at really good value - you won't need to break the bank! There is limited free parking there so may be better to walk there if possible.

Enjoyed a relaxing half hour watching the boats on the lake while we waited for the ferry.The service was very good and the prices very reasonable.

We came here for an evening meal and sat on the inside porch. It was perfect as had the effect of being outside but the warmth of inside. We ordered 2 veg lasagnes which were lovely but my mum ordered a flatbread 'pizza' which wasn't a pizza but a salad with the toppings and flatbreads on the sides which she didn't expect to have to make on. For deserts however we had chocolate brownie which was very nice and a piece of cake which was equally tasty. The toilets were very basic and could have been both more of them and improved in quality. However good value for food and very tasty with a beautiful view of the lake.

Just stopped here for a couple of drinks on our way back from a long walk. The place is clean and tidy and very busy with many people enjoying very nice looking food. I enjoyed my drinks, which were very reasonably priced for Ambleside, and will definitely be sampling the food on my next visit.

We stopped off here twice whilst holidaying in the area, the 1st time for drinks and snacks. Word of warning the crisps are £1 a packet, pretty expensive for fried potato and seasoning.The second time we stopped off for tea, however we were on the garden area and were only offered sandwich's. At £9-10 a sandwich I was pretty disappointed when they came out and the bread was dry.Wont be visiting again for food, very overpriced and disappointing

Call in for light lunch and is a great spot to sit and have a snack. reasonable menu all nicely presented and prepared.

Good food for reasonable prices. Lovely place on the decking to eat and further tables near the waters edge. Staff very nice. Would not mind staying here. In fact we visited the place twice.

It's a great place to go for reasonably priced, good food. There's no fuss or bother, just a good sized plate of decent grub

The Lakeside is a short walk away from the landing stage for the boat trips & has a lovely position by the side of Lake Windermere with a verandah outside for eating as well as tables inside. The staff were friendly but sadly the food was mediocre.The pizza appeared to be a made with a bought in base, covered in tiny holes which was disappointing. The vegetable lasagne was okay but again, didn't appear to be home made.

Great value and kids ate free when staying there - bonus!Can't fault in anyway and to sit right at the waterfront on a beautiful sunny warm day was glorious.

good for reasonable popular food with family friendly atmosphere. prone to queues to order at bar but staff are very friendly. Excellent views to lake Windermere.
