Looking for a last minute single room and one night stay, and had a great welcome from Paul. Charming, traditional small hotel and retains much of the character of this old building. Room was perfect and quiet. Enjoyed the walks to the recommended restaurant and the historic riverside. Much to discover and will come again.

We had a lovely stay here - I came for one night with my daughter but my parents also stayed for 2 nights. The rooms were lovely and comfortable and retained a lot of the character the hotel had clearly had over the years. We were made to feel very welcome and Paul the owner made people-shaped toast for my daughter for breakfast (which was also delicious) which went down well! They were also kind enough to post my daughter's necklace on to me, which she left in our room. Would definitely stay here again.

Only stayed a night but the room was comfortable and clean. The breakfast was nice, freshly cooked full English. Other options were available. Would stay again.

Had a great 2 night stay. Lovely rooms, very friendly owner. The only negative thing was there was no on-site parking we had to find a spot on the street but the owner gave us a map of some little parking areas within a short walk of the hotel.

My wife stayed at this Hotel not me. She is Deaf, Cannot Speak and reads and writes little. The staff were very accommodating and gave her a room for 4 nights at a special rate. The room was small but well appointed. I believe this is a family run Hotel and the atmosphere when I collected my wife was calm and welcoming. It is an old building but looks to be well maintained. It is a five minute walk to the centre of town where Cinema, Theatre, Leisure Centre and bars can be enjoyed.

We had a lovely lunch at the Commodore. The service was just the right mix of professional but friendly, not too pushy but not ignored either. We had a table with a lovely view which was helped by the day being sunny and warm. Our lunch was nicely presented and tasted great, I think it wasn't over priced compared to other pubs and restaurants in Instow but I think the Commodore has a nicer ambience. Definitely come back again, the only caveat is that the bar prices are maybe a bit higher than in the pub.

The Best Fish and Chips in Barnstaple – Hands Down! Pelican Fish and Chips is my absolute favourite spot in Barnstaple — it’s the kind of place that reels you in once and keeps you coming back for more. The fish is always perfectly cooked, light and flaky with that golden, crispy batter you dream about. The chips? Chunky, piping hot, and just the right amount of salt and vinegar. The vibe is friendly and relaxed, and there’s a subtle seaside charm that makes you feel like you’re just steps from the ocean (even if you’re not). It’s got that classic British chippy feel, with a little splash of something special — like the Pelican crew sprinkled in a bit of sea magic. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, drop anchor here. You won’t regret it.
