2 cod and chips, a battered sausage and mushy peas + curry source somehow 30.60? Seemed to to know all their regulars so can only assume they overcharged tourists.

Visited here end of August. From waiting in a queue for so long (very over hyped) it seems that if it can be microwaved it is - from pies and burgers, to gravy and peas. I witnessed one of the servers holding raw fish in his hands with no gloves, and then within a minute get a pie out of its container with bare hands - I didn’t see any washing of hands in between either, - ewww. Although no doubt this will be denied.. Once we had our food I found the fish to be bland and grey in areas, I’d paid slightly extra too for cod so was expecting great. The batter was soggy and tasted of just oil. My husband’s pie was awful - microwaved to within an inch of being edible and the chips and peas were just ok - nothing special at all. For us, far too overrated and very expensive at £24 for pie and chips, and fish, chips and peas. Definitely not worth the 45 minute wait and wouldn’t return no matter how hungry I was.

Absolutely smashing fish and chips at The Black & White! We ordered three large fish (cod) and chips and a refreshing Coke to wash it all down. The portions were so generous we could have easily shared one serving of chips between us. The fish was cooked to perfection - crispy, golden batter on the outside, flaky and moist on the inside. A proper chippy tea if ever there was one! While warming the curry sauce in the microwave was a bit unusual, it didn't detract from the overall experience one jot. The ice-cold Coke was a lovely complement to the hot, savoury meal. The staff were lovely and professional, handling the queue with ease. We've been coming here for years whenever we're in North Devon, and the quality has remained top-notch. The only "problem" (and I say this tongue-in-cheek) is the understandably long queue - but if you time it right, you might just be first in line! If you're after proper fish and chips in North Devon, look no further than The Black & White. It's well worth the wait, but do arrive early to beat the rush. Highly recommended!

Paid 4 90 for a flat rubber tasteless patty with a hole lettuce inside a bun I wouldn't give it to my dog wouldn't recommend that to anyone

Wow best chippy I’ve been too and I’ve been to a few. Fish and batter so good, chips soft and fluffy with a crisp. Portion size great and prices about normal for a chippy nowadays.

I worked in a chippy for a few years, this is hands down the best chips I've ever had!! Highly recommend, even a 30min drive would be worth it!!

Discovered this place on a wet & windy Saturday evening whilst holidaying in the area. Really friendly staff (and locals). Food was great & reasonably priced.

Staff extremely friendly and chatty. Food absolutely amazing. The most amazing batter I have ever seen/tasted in my life. As per another review, its not the cheapest chippy out there but I am a believer that in life you tend to get what you pay for. I was extremely happy (I can't stress how next-level the chips were). The cost of fish is a lot at the moment and so businesses have to pass on that cost to the consumer... It's the way business works. They are there to make money not provide charity. Anyway, I digress... I wouldn't think twice about going back - In fact I have promised myself that I will definitely get food from here again when I am next up this way. I owe my wife one for getting me to get food from here (She used to eat here when holidaying as a child). Chips - Definite 10/10 (Never had chips like them!) Battered sausage - 10/10 Cost - 8/10 (A little pricey but the quality of the food and service totally counteracted that). I think this is a nice and honest review. See you again some day guys!

Tried to overcharge us. When challenged by my wife, the person at the counter said he thought I was having fish as well as chips, but there was no fish in the box with my chips. Refunded immediately. Check what you are being charged here.

Haddock cooked to order which was fresh and very tasty with a lovely light crispy batter and golden chips. After walking the most extreme path from Minehead this was just what I needed. Reasonably priced for the quality. Would highly recommend👍👍

Queued up at around 7ish, decided to leave the queue ar around 8ish. Couldn't justify waiting more than an hour for fish and chips. Needs improvement to get orders out quicker

Probably one of the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. The food is delicious and fresh, and the staff are wonderful. Would highly recommend. We went 5 minutes before closing time on one occasion and our order was no problem for them, they cooked everything fresh for us regardless of the time. Great service.

Been twice and it was excellent both times. Once at lunch when it was quiet and once it the evening when we had to queue for half an hour.

Prices are absolutely outragious, fish was the most oily and greasy I have ever had, and they microwave the beans and curry sauce etc which absolutely baffled me, as I have only ever seen fresh curry sauce poured from a ladel dipped in the pot/pan. We have a local chippy at home that sources fish straight from the port into the shop, they charge £7 for a small cod, chips, sauce and a battered sausage all in a box. Myself and my fiance shared a portion of chips and a large fish with curry sauce and spent nearly £20. Feel lack of local competition in Combe Martin allows for price hikes and a drop in quality. Would travel to Ilfracombe in future.

The queue was down the road, but the chippy was well staffed, who were working their socks off to get food to people. A certain amount was being cooked in anticipation of the needs of the queue, so the wait was about 15 mins. It was well worth it. The fish was cooked perfectly, the batter was very tasty and the chips were brilliant. Some of the best fish n chips I've ever had. Wish the food, the work ethic and the shop was in Minehead, the chippys here could do with that kind of competition. Well done to you all for great service and lovely food.

Popped into here to pick up Cod and Chips on a very wet and windy holiday. The staff were friendly, the food was cooked fresh and was very fast and we thoroughly enjoyed it!

Well, it's certainly popular! I had to queue for 45 minutes but was keen to try the food from this traditional fish and chip shop based on the glowing reviews on another site. Despite the long queue, I found very efficient and friendly staff and fresh cooked food. The fish and chips didn't quite live up to the aforementioned glowing reviews, with the chips being a bit dodgy. Fish was nice but I've had much better chips elsewhere. Also, over 20 quid for fish and chips twice is a bit steep given the quality but I'm old, so maybe that's the norm now in beach towns. Would I return? Well, they won't miss me if I don't as the next time we drove past, there was a huge queue again, but it was a tasty meal so I probably would. I hope this review doesn't sound like damning with faint praise - I have given it 4 stars after all.

At the second attempt the Que wasn’t to bad, having managed to avoid a ridiculously long que we can now see why there is a que, the fish and chips were faultless, quick turn around once in the shop, staff were very friendly and efficient, will definitely go again

Another business in this town that is closed when it's site says it should be open. Love driving miles to places with a car full of kids to have to turn around. Three of these here in the last 24 hours.

Best fish and chips I've had in a long time

Disgusting that’s all I can say about the food I bought. Fish is sold from the merchant and you pay a small extra fee to receive it boned and skinned. Paid £6.50 for a piece of fish that still had the skin left on. Fish only smells when it’s old this stunk. Beware don’t waste your money here. They don’t deserve your business.

Large Haydock & Chips x2.. Chips were hard as nails , obviously taken from the hotbox and re-fried , I wish I had looked more closely as they were shovelled into the box. The Haddock was cooked freshly and was decent enough but by no means outstanding, had it been on par with the chips I'd have gone back! and asked asked for my money back. Check before buying is my advice !!!

Sent kids in for child's nuggets and chips X2 plus extra chips. The kids were sold adult meals and adult prices. Questioned on the phone afterwards without any real explaination.The person on the phone lacked communication skills. I guess I shouldn't be encouraging them to be independent. I have checked prices on the online menu using adult prices and I feel even these don't come to what was charged. I really feel the children were taken advantage of. The picture shows what you get for £17.40.

Were new to Combe Martin and went for fish and chips here as a treat, they were lovely and friendly in the shop and the chips we had were awesome 👌

Refused me entry as i did not have a mask, i told them i was exempt, left my exempt card (which by law isn't or wasn't needed) at home, i live Coventry, many miles away, this was the ONLY fast food restaurant for miles and me, my partner and our daughter hadn't ate for the whole drive down, luckily Ilfracombe fish shops were much more understanding.

We have regularly used the takeaway for the last ten years and found the quality of their offering to be consistently good, however tonight we were served the worst food we have ever experienced. This is very upsetting as we have trusted them to provide quality, both chips and the cod were awful inedible and only fit for rubbish bin. Such a shame.

I've not had better fish and chips anywhere! The wait wasn't too bad this Friday - queue looks worse than it is due to social distancing and only 4 customers in the shop at a time. They take cards and also tap and pay by phone. I paid using Google pay. Will visit again. 🙂

Best fish and chips I've had in ages! The queue was about 12 people long, down the street on a Friday eve, but I was served in about 20mins. Both the cod and the chips were perfectly cooked and the staff were all very friendly. There's a little car park opposite too.
