Ye Olde Smokey House in South Hams

The food today was exceptional. Great carvery for my parents, a delicious steak with proper home-cooked chips for me. Lovely! Service was stellar too. Only negative was the real ales (Dartmoor Jail Ale and ipa) did not taste that great

Hi we go to the smokey at Maldon at least a couple times a month but tonight Sunday 22 December I went with my husband and my son and daughter in law and we booked for 5 o'clock but the carvery was very dry and old not alot of fresh veg at all and my partner sent her steak and ale pie back as the chips tasted terrible from old cooker fat and it ruined the dish so sent back . Really was disappointed as bin going old smokey for over 30 years but won't be rushing back .

I visited today (13th December). I go every year and normally order the carvery which is usually great. This year I ordered the soup to start and the Smokey Homemade Burger. The soup was delicious, but the burger and 'chips' were inedible. The burger was so dry and smelt of rubber. The chips were undercooked and hard in the middle. I told the waitress and she apologised and asked if I wanted anything else. I declined. When I went to pay nothing was taken off my bill. To make matters worse, when I got home I realised I was overcharged - I was charged for a double burger when I had not requested this. Essentially I paid £30 plus for a soup and a soft drink!

Good place for a meal or carvery, 2 choices of ales, but plenty of largers

Came in here the other day for a roast.. Can't really say much positive.. Just a poor meal.. The meat was just chunks rather than sliced.. Not very nice...

The gluten free menu is vast and the food was superb

A group of ramblers dined here after a chilly 4 mile walk. We had worked up a good appetite. Our walk leader had told us it was good value and we believed her. I personally had not been before but I was impressed. The pork I had was very tender, vegetables were delicious, especially the honey mustard parsnips and the potatoes were crispy. I thought the stuffing looked stodgy and passed on that, but overall excellent lunch, and decent price too.

We popped in for Sunday lunch and were extremely lucky to get a table The carvery was beautiful The range of veg was very good only the roast spuds let them down as they tasted old Definitely worth a visit but you really need to book for a Sunday

Great Sunday roast, vegan roast was very good they have obviously tried hard to provide for vegans.

A very busy Thurday evening, orders taken quickly but a bit of a wait fir rhe carvery. The roast parsnips are amazing, honey roasted and taste delicious. Plenty of parking on site. We had a good meal but service was a little slow.

Met up with a friend for lunch today. Staff so friendly and helpful. Carvery was great and deserts amazing. Not rushed. Highly recommended👍

Sunday carvery is second to none. Always fresh and hot. Lots of veg to chose from.

Booked a table for 17 of us! Absolutely Flawless 🙂 Food was banging ! Had mixed grill that was excellent, The service was brilliant & the waitress who took our orders was so good & patient! I’ve not been here for a while but I wasn’t disappointed tonight. It made our Family night worth every penny. A big Thank you.

Great food and great service. Recommended by friends and while it isn't an upmarket place, the food was excellent, with a varied menu and a plentiful specials menu. Staff were helpful and friendly and give great advice on food options and on the wines on offer. I'd definitely recommend anyone to try this place

Came here last year and quality was great hence the return and not disappointed Absolutely stunning food and drink with lovely staff just worth the visit Delicious fresh and large meals so filling but leave enough room for dessert which are all home made Only set back, 200 miles is a little far to travel every week!!!!

Table booked for 5 people. One had carvery which was really good, the lasagne was good and also the gammon, nice big portions but 2 of us had fish, one gluten free and we were both disappointed with the quality of the fish. It seemed to be a tail of the fish with very little meat. Alot of money for such a small amount of fish. If we go back then certainly won't be eating the fish again.

Went for a Sunday Carvery and it was excellent! Full gluten free option and aware of coeliac and cross contamination. Got the meat, carrots, cabbage, green beans and sprouts from the self serve section but potatoes, yorkshires, cauliflower, stuffing, parsnips and gravy were prepared and bought out separately to ensure gluten free and safe to eat. No reaction, would definitely go back and highly recommend. Lovely staff and reasonably priced too ☺️

Visited tonight for food. Was a little apprehensive when parking up, however the staff are very welcoming. The meals we ordered were outstanding, rack of baby ribs and the chicken and cranberry. The most enjoyable meal we have had for a long time. Plentiful and tasty, cooked to perfection. We had desert too, and the were delightful. Will definitely be visiting next time we caravan in Torquay. 🥰

There are many other eateries that could learn a lot from the ye old smokey house. Simply the best gluten-free carvery and desert menu I have ever seen. Well done, and thank you. 😊

Oh, what can l say, this place you must go to, it not dear, the food is excellent, the staff are really nice, so go and try Sunday lunch, book a table though.

Wonderful people amazing food just be aware chicken breast ( which is fabulous) does have cranberries in the breast which is not mentioned in the menu I am aware that certain medications that react with this luckily I am no longer in that group but would have been disappointed if I still was as I would of not been able to have it

We dined here with family and friends recently and I have to say we throughly enjoy ourselves. We had the carvery roast and it was amazing with plenty of food on the plate and great value for money too. My daughter had chicken wings and loved them so much. We ordered desserts from the board and wow what a choice of desserts they have here what we had were beautiful and so tasty. The staff were so friendly and polite thank you to them all. Overall a wonderful little gem of a place with a cozy atmosphere that a proper local can only give you. I would recommend this place to stop off and have a bite to eat or drink, stay a while or even a long time as we did it’s so nice. Thanks all who made our experience very enjoyable indeed.

Easy to find location with plenty of parking. Waitresses were lovely and helpful. Food was fresh and full of flavour, with good portions. Certain we will return again.

Good sized Carvery, family feel. If you're looking for a homely place to eat this is perfect. Well staffed and managed and very courteous. Probably one of the last places to provide a jug of water without being asked and was very thoughtful as the building is very warm.

Always great food here and friendly staff. Their carveries are great! But, pub in bad need of a refurbishment, very dark inside, conservatory is best place but again, dated. We've been coming here 8 years now as foud us going but no money spent on it. Outside seating is in car park, they do have a small tatty garden. Outside table tops are all wobbly not just the legs. Pub really need a refurbishment!

Ordered food from here and must say it was delicious. I ordered a Sunday carvery which was amazing and my partner ordered a mixed grill which was huge! But said it’s the best mixed grill he’s had. Overall nice staff & great food/ portions. Also dog friendly.

Went for lunch today had 2 burgers and a scampi quality of food was poor waited over 25 mins for the food staff unhappy slammed card machine on counter burgers were dry and over cooked chips were terrible and poor quality all round would not recommend

Cavery was ok staff where a bit grumpy-so that made the service a little uncomfortable but other than that was ok .. probably won’t visit again .

We had a lovely carvery this evening, two of us were Gluten Free (coeliac) and we were very well looked after, we even had a choice of desserts. For the carvery we go out meat from the carvery then the rest of our food including GF Yorkshire pudding and gravy came from the kitchen to avoid cross contamination.

6 plus 1 dog came for Sunday lunch yesterday and sat in the back room , had a mixture of food, carvery, mix grills e.t.c service was great our waiter was friendly and efficient a credit to your place, food was lovely, mix grills very large !! everyone enjoyed it and everyone's food was finished. Always a warm welcome from the staff who ensure you are ok throughout your service. Lovely atmosphere and the service is excellent. The best carvery I’ve ever had and it’s the only place me my family and friends go to now.

After being let down by another restaurant. We made the longer journey to revisit here. They were just as we remember them. Great choice on menu, very welcoming and very tasty food. Steak was just perfect and the choice of desserts were hard to choose from, they all looked so good. Will be our go to place for mid to late afternoon Sunday meal from now on. Definitely will pre book as they were still very busy even after 3pm.

We had the carvery there was hardly any meat and the young girl who was-carving it said she was trying to get the most out of it also the vegetables were very sparse I felt disappointed with the carvery

Great for a family or celebratory meal. Spacious restaurant with personable waiting staff. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The carvery, fish & chips, fajhitas (a squeeze of lime would make these smoky mouthfuls sublime), to home made lasagne with garlic bread. Generous portions of the roast meat of the day on the carvery and the vegetables are particularly good, not overcooked. I love their red cabbage especially. The cheese sauce on the cauliflower has no flavour though, which is a shame and the gravy is not meat gravy but just bisto. The puddings are what really shine; the pear and chocolate Frangipane was delicious, as was the banoffee pie.

What's not to love... food is always amazing, the staff are wonderful and the prices are unbelievably reasonable. My husband and I had 2 pints, 2 pimms & lemonade, a small pepsi, mixed grill, lasagne and a small dessert (which I found to be just a nice size) and the bill was £62! Absolutely adore eating out here, never had a bad meal, we bring family & friends when they come to visit and they always say the same as us.

What a wonderful meal. Plenty choice, great price, wonderful staff. It would have been helpful if we'd been informed by the staff of a specials board at the time of being given the menu. No specials board was on view in our seating area.

We were a little dubious about eating here on a Friday night as we thought it might be too busy or too noisy. How wrong we were. The pub was busy but not overly so, in fact it was good to see the place thriving. We were seated quickly and given menus immediately. The waiting staff were polite and very efficient even though they were busy. Our food was piping hot and delicious as always. The prices are very reasonable and the menu quite extensive. Definitely a place to recommend. We will be back next time we are visiting family down here.

We were lucky enough to meet and have lunch our friends from Plymouth having travelled ourselves from Kent. The staff were very friendly, the Jail Ale a delight and the food by far the best carvery we have ever had. The puddings were to die for. Certainly a must for us next time we come to Devon. Been lots of times food is brill prices quite reasonable best to pre book can get very busy at weekends

The young staff we're all very polite and pleasant. Unfortunately the same could not be said of the food, it was of a very poor standard. As we walked into the Pub my wife said we really should come here more often, as we live very close by. The Cod fillet was of several broken piece's of un-fresh tired fish in a soggy not freshly made so called cider batter. My wife's Turkey pie with a great splodge of skin on mash did not fair much better. Such a disappointment, why did we not complain? Because we were meeting up with old friends and did not want to cause any atmosphere. It could so easily of been so much better with a little more pride from the kitchen. So that is the reason we won't be coming more often, such a shame we had been planning a big family get together!

Another return visit. Great, friendly staff, dog friendly (in the bar area), lovely, well prepared food, reasonably priced. The carvery was great. The dessert board was amazing. The best I've seen in a long time. I was really spoilt for choice! A great visit. I would 100% recommend! It ticked every box!

Great choice of menu. Four of us went to celebrate an 80th Birthday on 5th Match and going back on the 12th March to celebrate my sister in law's birthday.

I can only describe this place as a wonderful and attentive place,service was spot on food incredible I will be returning on a lot of occasions now.

We went as 2 couples. We went on a week night at 6pm with no booking. No problem with getting a table. Food was delicious. Perfectly cooked & served. I had rump steak with pepper sauce. I think the price was £17. Worth the money. No hesitation in returning.

We visited here on the 24th Feb, as usual great service along with superb food and the friendliest of atmospheres. We come here on a fairly regular basis and as a rule they're always busy but the high standards are maintained. Highly Recommended.

Me and my family have gone to the Smokey for years; never had a bad day there! Late last year I descovered that I have 28 food intolerances which meant I cannot eat in restaurants. My family and I approached the team to see if we could make something work! They have been so accommodating with my intolerances and today I went up once again after months to have such a nice meal! It fills my heart with joy that a local business looks after their customers so well. I always reccomend the Smokey to friends, family and co-workers and whenever they come up in conversation, all I hear are great things! Thank you to Nina, Keeley and the team❤️

Popped in on the off-chance but stayed for food and drinks. The food was AMAZING, delicious pub food and proper portion sizes too at very reasonable prices! The staff were very friendly and there was a great atmosphere. The restaurant was fully booked but we were told we could eat in the pub side, which was perfect. Will definitely be back and highly recommended this gem of a place to anyone!

I haven’t been here for some years and I wonder why! The food was excellent and plenty of it. My partner and I had ribs and steak and ale pie both of which were gorgeous. Staff were very attentive and obviously happy in their jobs. Decor a bit tired in places but then I was there for the food and will be again. Thank you Ye Old Smokey.

Amazing carvery. Every time we come here, the food is fantastic, and there are always dairy-free dessert options, which is a bonus for me. Hot, plentiful and delicious.

Fantastic carvery and decent price

Our experience today ticked all the boxes. Friendly, attentive staff. Tasty food. A good range of vegetables, which tasted very fresh. We had the carvery. The dessert menu was astonishing. I've never seen such a massive choice., 2 sides full of a huge chalk board. The portion sizes were very generous. The Black Forest gateau, with a large amount of clotted cream, was delicious and was enough to feed a small village! An excellent meal, reasonably priced.

Perfect . Booked for our family christmas meal . Food was perfect as was the service. The atmosphere , as always, was great. The staff were very attentive , polite and helpful. Price wise , it was extremely good value for money . Highly recommended .

Lovely Christmas dinner out this week with large group of friends. Need not have worried - the food was great on the whole with huge portions. Carvery + veg etc all good and piping hot. Yes the pub is a bit tired but it is very old and fortunately (in my view) not had a 'modern' makeover like so many establishments which takes away from the atmosphere. The service was very prompt and all the staff really friendly and welcoming. Pub was full which says it all. Not visited for a while and left very impressed.

Very disappointed.its been a while since coming to Ye Old Smokey, and always thought of it as one of the best for a carvery. Very bland tasting,meat was dry ,roast potatoes stodgy. Would not recommend.

Always excellent value for money

There were four of us, we ordered the Christmas carvery. How disappointing it was, three of us were served the scrag ends of the turkey which consisted of just shreds and small bits which the server scooped up between a knife and fork, there were no actual slices. The bits we did have were overcooked and hard and in our opinion inedible. The stuffing also tasted terrible. However the vegetables and starters were fine. Such a shame as we usually enjoy our meals there.
