Ye Olde Smokey House in South Hams

Always great food here and friendly staff. Their carveries are great! But, pub in bad need of a refurbishment, very dark inside, conservatory is best place but again, dated. We've been coming here 8 years now as foud us going but no money spent on it. Outside seating is in car park, they do have a small tatty garden. Outside table tops are all wobbly not just the legs. Pub really need a refurbishment!

Cavery was ok staff where a bit grumpy-so that made the service a little uncomfortable but other than that was ok .. probably won’t visit again .

First time here ( locals ) lovely staff and very tasty home made food very impressed ! We shall definitely be back

We had a lovely carvery this evening, two of us were Gluten Free (coeliac) and we were very well looked after, we even had a choice of desserts. For the carvery we go out meat from the carvery then the rest of our food including GF Yorkshire pudding and gravy came from the kitchen to avoid cross contamination.

6 plus 1 dog came for Sunday lunch yesterday and sat in the back room , had a mixture of food, carvery, mix grills e.t.c service was great our waiter was friendly and efficient a credit to your place, food was lovely, mix grills very large !! everyone enjoyed it and everyone's food was finished. Oh, what can l say, this place you must go to, it not dear, the food is excellent, the staff are really nice, so go and try Sunday lunch, book a table.

Went with a party of 12. Have been here before for the Sunday carvery and have never been disappointed. Highly recommended.

Always a warm welcome from the staff who ensure you are ok throughout your service. Lovely atmosphere and the service is excellent. The best carvery I’ve ever had and it’s the only place me my family and friends go to now.

After being let down by another restaurant. We made the longer journey to revisit here. They were just as we remember them. Great choice on menu, very welcoming and very tasty food. Steak was just perfect and the choice of desserts were hard to choose from, they all looked so good. Will be our go to place for mid to late afternoon Sunday meal from now on. Definitely will pre book as they were still very busy even after 3pm.

We had the carvery there was hardly any meat and the young girl who was-carving it said she was trying to get the most out of it also the vegetables were very sparse I felt disappointed with the carvery

Great for a family or celebratory meal. Spacious restaurant with personable waiting staff. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The carvery, fish & chips, fajhitas (a squeeze of lime would make these smoky mouthfuls sublime), to home made lasagne with garlic bread. Generous portions of the roast meat of the day on the carvery and the vegetables are particularly good, not overcooked. I love their red cabbage especially. The cheese sauce on the cauliflower has no flavour though, which is a shame and the gravy is not meat gravy but just bisto. The puddings are what really shine; the pear and chocolate Frangipane was delicious, as was the banoffee pie.

What's not to love... food is always amazing, the staff are wonderful and the prices are unbelievably reasonable. My husband and I had 2 pints, 2 pimms & lemonade, a small pepsi, mixed grill, lasagne and a small dessert (which I found to be just a nice size) and the bill was £62! Absolutely adore eating out here, never had a bad meal, we bring family & friends when they come to visit and they always say the same as us.

What a wonderful meal. Plenty choice, great price, wonderful staff. It would have been helpful if we'd been informed by the staff of a specials board at the time of being given the menu. No specials board was on view in our seating area.

We were a little dubious about eating here on a Friday night as we thought it might be too busy or too noisy. How wrong we were. The pub was busy but not overly so, in fact it was good to see the place thriving. We were seated quickly and given menus immediately. The waiting staff were polite and very efficient even though they were busy. Our food was piping hot and delicious as always. The prices are very reasonable and the menu quite extensive. Definitely a place to recommend. We will be back next time we are visiting family down here.

We were lucky enough to meet and have lunch our friends from Plymouth having travelled ourselves from Kent. The staff were very friendly, the Jail Ale a delight and the food by far the best carvery we have ever had. The puddings were to die for. Certainly a must for us next time we come to Devon. The young staff we're all very polite and pleasant. Unfortunately the same could not be said of the food, it was of a very poor standard. As we walked into the Pub my wife said we really should come here more often, as we live very close by. The Cod fillet was of several broken piece's of un-fresh tired fish in a soggy not freshly made so called cider batter. My wife's Turkey pie with a great splodge of skin on mash did not fair much better. Such a disappointment, why did we not complain? Because we were meeting up with old friends and did not want to cause any atmosphere. It could so easily of been so much better with a little more pride from the kitchen. So that is the reason we won't be coming more often, such a shame we had been planning a big family get together!

Another return visit. Great, friendly staff, dog friendly (in the bar area), lovely, well prepared food, reasonably priced. The carvery was great. The dessert board was amazing. The best I've seen in a long time. I was really spoilt for choice! A great visit. I would 100% recommend! It ticked every box!

Lovely pub and restaurant, food portions were fantastic! Great choice of food on the main menu, nothing was too much trouble and the service was superb. Staff were so friendly and welcoming. We were visiting friends and there were 5 of us, the carvery had plenty of choice too, and don't get me started on the desserts! There were so many to choose from, again great portions and value for money!!!

Such a lovely old pub. The carvery is up there with the best. Fresh well cooked vegetables. Plenty to choose from and melt in the mouth tender meat. Delicious 😋

Found me a nice quiet corner in the conservatory. Pleasant & helpful staff who were always on hand. Well presented food. Recommend the blueberry & white chocolate roulade.

Great choice of menu. Four of us went to celebrate an 80th Birthday on 5th Match and going back on the 12th March to celebrate my sister in law's birthday.

I can only describe this place as a wonderful and attentive place,service was spot on food incredible I will be returning on a lot of occasions now.

We went as 2 couples. We went on a week night at 6pm with no booking. No problem with getting a table. Food was delicious. Perfectly cooked & served. I had rump steak with pepper sauce. I think the price was £17. Worth the money. No hesitation in returning.

We visited here on the 24th Feb, as usual great service along with superb food and the friendliest of atmospheres. We come here on a fairly regular basis and as a rule they're always busy but the high standards are maintained. Highly Recommended.

Me and my family have gone to the Smokey for years; never had a bad day there! Late last year I descovered that I have 28 food intolerances which meant I cannot eat in restaurants. My family and I approached the team to see if we could make something work! They have been so accommodating with my intolerances and today I went up once again after months to have such a nice meal! It fills my heart with joy that a local business looks after their customers so well. I always reccomend the Smokey to friends, family and co-workers and whenever they come up in conversation, all I hear are great things! Thank you to Nina, Keeley and the team❤️

Popped in on the off-chance but stayed for food and drinks. The food was AMAZING, delicious pub food and proper portion sizes too at very reasonable prices! The staff were very friendly and there was a great atmosphere. The restaurant was fully booked but we were told we could eat in the pub side, which was perfect. Will definitely be back and highly recommended this gem of a place to anyone!

I haven’t been here for some years and I wonder why! The food was excellent and plenty of it. My partner and I had ribs and steak and ale pie both of which were gorgeous. Staff were very attentive and obviously happy in their jobs. Decor a bit tired in places but then I was there for the food and will be again. Thank you Ye Old Smokey.

Amazing carvery. Every time we come here, the food is fantastic, and there are always dairy-free dessert options, which is a bonus for me. Hot, plentiful and delicious.

Fantastic carvery and decent price

Our experience today ticked all the boxes. Friendly, attentive staff. Tasty food. A good range of vegetables, which tasted very fresh. We had the carvery. The dessert menu was astonishing. I've never seen such a massive choice., 2 sides full of a huge chalk board. The portion sizes were very generous. The Black Forest gateau, with a large amount of clotted cream, was delicious and was enough to feed a small village! An excellent meal, reasonably priced.

Perfect . Booked for our family christmas meal . Food was perfect as was the service. The atmosphere , as always, was great. The staff were very attentive , polite and helpful. Price wise , it was extremely good value for money . Highly recommended .

Lovely Christmas dinner out this week with large group of friends. Need not have worried - the food was great on the whole with huge portions. Carvery + veg etc all good and piping hot. Yes the pub is a bit tired but it is very old and fortunately (in my view) not had a 'modern' makeover like so many establishments which takes away from the atmosphere. The service was very prompt and all the staff really friendly and welcoming. Pub was full which says it all. Not visited for a while and left very impressed.

Very disappointed.its been a while since coming to Ye Old Smokey, and always thought of it as one of the best for a carvery. Very bland tasting,meat was dry ,roast potatoes stodgy. Would not recommend.

There were four of us, we ordered the Christmas carvery. How disappointing it was, three of us were served the scrag ends of the turkey which consisted of just shreds and small bits which the server scooped up between a knife and fork, there were no actual slices. The bits we did have were overcooked and hard and in our opinion inedible. The stuffing also tasted terrible. However the vegetables and starters were fine. Such a shame as we usually enjoy our meals there.

Warm and friendly place. Often busy even out of season. I say warm, it actually gets quite hot inside when busy with the log fire going.

Easy to find location with plenty of parking. Mostly friendly service, with the exception of a slightly grumpy carvery chef. Waitresses were lovely and helpful. Food was fresh and full of flavour, with good portions. Certain we will return again.

Really dossapointed. The food was ok. We had scampi and carvery lunchtime. Table service, ordered a drink and then food. Drinks and food delivered and plates were taken away. Not once did anyone come over and ask if everything was OK. Nobody came and asked if we required further drinks and nobody came up and asked if we would like the dessert menu. In fact we had to go to bar and find someone so we could pay bill. Couldn't see any reason for any of this as there were several staff around and it wasn't that busy. Certainly no incentive to go back !!

Lovely pub, staff and food. Had carvery, the beef was so good, tender and no fat. Really good roast potatoes. Disappointed I couldn’t have the beef gravy though as it had pork juices in which I don’t eat. The veg was all good although not very hot. Delicious pudding. Definitely will visit again, thank you.

Sunday lunch. Fabulous food, not as busy as it used to be. Which is a plus. Sometimes, if the place is too busy, it feels overcrowded.

Visited with friends for a weekday lunch. The pub was reasonably busy. Decor quite dated, but looked clean. l decided on a standard carvery. There was a choice of beef or pork or could have both, which I went for. Both meats were overdone, but reasonably tasty. The parsnips were so overdone, I couldn't cut them. The potatoes looked and tasted like frozen. Green beans and sprouts were also overcooked, but the carrots and red cabbage were fine. There were a few florets of cauliflower floating around in a vat of cheese sauce. Tasted okay, but I'm fairly certain it was not homemade. The whole meal was only lukewarm. I was disappointed as many people had recommended the carvery at this pub. Perhaps it's better on a Sunday or I was just unlucky to visit on an off day. Either way, I won't be back. Had anybody enquired if we'd enjoyed our meals, I would have provided feedback.

Very good menu and really efficient staff. Pricing very reasonable, well worth a visit. This was our third visit and we were not disappointed. Definitely would recommend.

Arrived at the pub at about 1.30pm ish, as I saw on the website that lunch was served all afternoon. We arrived at the bar where our drinks order was placed and we asked for two carvery meals. This was then paid for. They had space inside the bar but as it was such a beautiful day we said we would sit at an outside table. We took our drinks out side and returned to choose our meal. Three meats to choose from as well as two veggie ones. The vegetables were across the unit fresh and plentiful, which was also very hard to choose what I wanted without overloading the plate. Once the plate was filled we went outside to our table. What a lovely way to spend a couple of hours eating, drinking and enjoying the view. All the staff were lovely and very attentive.

Impossible to order by phone. Multiple times this month have tried to call and they just won't answer no matter how long you wait for. Sick of trying now. Shame as I really enjoy their food.

Here on holiday. Was out walking and found this amazing place. Stopped off for a cheeky drink and snack we had warm baguette salad home made coleslaw and crisps absolutely beautiful. Staff really friendly and helpful. Will be booking a table for an evening meal before going back home.

What a disastrous meal they served me tonight anaemic chips undercooked tasteless and like cardboard plus lots of little bits, after complaining the offered to replace it with what they called mash potato I would call it hot lumpy slop tasted so earthy and unpalatable I could not bring myself to eat it, end result the chef would not come out so refused to pay…. The only positive was the three sausages where nice…

Met up with a very old friend and his wife for lunch. Had a long lunch and nobody rushed us. We had meals from the main menu rather than the carvery. Can recommend the malibu and coconut cheesecake.

Managed to get us in for a table for 2 on a Sunday evening at short notice. Food - carvery was incredible! So tasty! And generous with the meat. Roasties were lovely, as was the gravy. Will definitely be back!

Gluten free roast, need I say more? 15+ years of being GF and this was my first roast that I didn’t make myself, with gravy Stuffing and a Yorkshire!! If all my Christmas’ didn’t come at once already- their desert menu was mostly GF & LF treacle sponge was a hilight. The staff were fantastic and so accommodating. Highly reccomend.

Can't beat homemade Turkey bacon and leek pie for £8.95. I guess it's a good use of leftovers from the carvery? It was delious and the staff were really friendly too. Don't judge a book by its cover. Inside this pub is oldy worldy and so lovely. We were impressed with the carvery we saw too but Sunday carvery was too busy. Maybe next time

We were holidaying in the Devon area after coming down from Norfolk, and this place we had already researched as we wanted to find somewhere that did a nice carvery. This did not disappoint! We ended up visiting twice in the week in the end as the food and service was so good. There were lots of different waiters/waitresses and every single one of them we spoke to/who served us were friendly and accommodating. We also got served by the lady manager and she was really lovely too. This pub/restaurant felt really homely and had a great atmosphere. The carvery was of high quality and they had a really excellent selection of desserts/cake cabinets! There was so much I wanted to try and I only wish that I had this place where I live so I could experience more of their homemade delicious desserts. I had the Neapolitan cake which was so unique and tasty, as well as the yummy raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake. My partner had the salted caramel torte which I also tried a bit of and that was amazing too. They offer great offers such as a carvery and dessert deal and 2 desserts for £8 in the week rather than £7 each. This restaurant and it's team are a great little asset to Paignton and I highly recommend!
