We stopped here for lunch on our way to Salcombe. A beautiful, sunny, crisp January day, it was a beautiful place to be with the view over the beach and sea. Lunch was ordered using the menu QR code which was reasonably straightforward. We had a cajun chicken wrap, a Po-Boy popcorn shrimp wrap with sweet chilli sauce and a 6oz steak, plus a side of fries and the popcorn shrimp for the others to try. It came very promptly and was all delicious, apart from the steak which had been ordered rare but came medium to well done. It was replaced with a much better steak which was, indeed, rare second time around. The accompanying salads were very tasty and the fries were very good - always a good test of a place! Would definitely return.

A real gem!! Day trip in Salcombe for my sister's birthday. We both massive foodies coming from hospitality families and being chefs ! And rally critical !! Asked for starters mains all at once . They accommodated . Lucy fantastic and maxi great service Non of the potentiousness all about apsalutly fantastic food and value !! Thermador was perfectly shelled and when I went to taste the remaining head -fresh fresh fresh . Very nice . The gratin!!! Must of been nearly a whole crab in there with right amount of scallops with the roe on!! So many places seen to get rid of the finest part in which is what we pay for .the bisk and light topping really gave honour to the seafood . I would of happily had all that arriabatta and butter on my prawns and chef s obviously being too considerate and it was beautifully plated . Beutiffly simple plating not to fraffy . Perfect real pint of perfectly crunchy prawns! I'm coming back for monkfish and prawn cocktail and to see the view in the day. Mostly this place you can feel the culture and history . It hasn't turned into a potentiontous unaffordable harbour restaurant . The owners have made an effort reviving the real history and legacy of this establishment with is priceless Annnnd theeeennnnnn Lucy came and gave my sister a little birthday goody back with all the souvenirs and treats!! Big love and apprietion all the guys winking lobster especially still being family run and independent ..,💓💓💓 We will be back !

I find it really hard to believe any of the bad reviews on trip advisor about this place and nonsense about ordering via a QR. It appears as though you can order through the QR, however we had table service and the service i must say - was attentive but not intrusive. Perfect balance which is hard to find. Service seemed to run smoothly with each and every table being equally attended. The restaurant being small and on a cooler evening (no tables outside) i can imagine this being more manageable. The food was extremely reasonable given the location (personally) We had the chicken dish and the lobster in which we shared both. We were given a generous portion of the mixed veg with samphire! which was a lovely touch, salad and chips which was plentiful for us both. Lovely to still visit a place that offers bread and butter without a cover charge and just the little touches that go a long way and not underappreciated, certainly from us. I have to say both lobster and chicken were cooked to perfection - sauces again plentiful and portion size generous. I really cannot fault! 2 mains, including sizes, two drinks and a dessert to share came to a very reasonable £90 with small service we added as a gesture of appreciation. I think given that this was a weekday and weather was not brilliant, we enjoyed a much more relaxed experienced and we managed to keep our table for a good couple of hours without feeling rushed away. Massive thank you to the team that looked after us as we really had a lovely time and will most certainly be back!

Athough food still good, this is not what it was. Absolutely horrible ordering system via QR code requiring app to be downloaded , therefore WiFi needed. This is provided but unreliable - so once menu accessed it dumps you before the order is complete. I don't mind online ordering AS AN OPTION but compulsory?? Eventually we got a waitress to take the order. But no ability to check your order before charging and no receipt offered. So many customers moaning about this system. Two tables walked out.

We arrived at the Winking Prawn late afternoon firstly to find a rope across the entrance and a sign saying to wait on this side of it. We were then told that we would have to order on line! We were then told that we couldn’t have food but could have drinks and cakes. We decided to stay and I asked what cakes they had as they weren’t on the menu. I was told a list and I asked if I could see the cakes, as they weren’t on display, to be told that they were just ordinary chocolate cake etc. I asked again if I could see them to be told the same again. The service we received was poor. We decided to leave and ate elsewhere. This is a shame as we always liked visiting the Winking Prawn in the past. I think we received Poor customer service which I believe isn’t all the fault of the young girls who work there who otherwise seem nice.

I was quite disappointed. Although the grilled mackerel was tasty and cooked well, it was meant to come with beetroot and didn't. The salad was so random, leaves, old tomatoes, soggy croutons, broad beans, peas, seeds and dried cranberries?! Also I asked someone for a pot/side plate for my ketchup, rather than clarify or say anything, she acknowledged with a dirty look, but didn't actually get me one and I had to go ask someone else. Annoyed that they asked for the tip upfront, otherwise I would have not paid it

I would love to have had a waiter serving us. All the children working there just asked if we were ok. They were standing there half the time and didnt have anything to do. When answering "No" to their question, they didnt know, how to change it. They all said they would call someone to help, but noone came. Industrial atmosphere, anonimous way to order and get the food served, all digital. Noone asked if we wanted dessert or would have liked to finish the meal with a coffee. It would be great for the business to do so. The steak hard and bad quality, when brought to their attention, the children didnt know what to do or fix it. Please employ skilled waiters 1.9.24.: Thank you for your answer. There were youngsters that looked 10 or 12-year-old. Obviously it is not a job for a first work experience as they do not know what to do. They should start with walking dogs and delivering newspapers

Nestled in the picturesque coastal town of Salcombe, The Winking Prawn offers a charming dining experience with both indoor and outdoor seating that provides a stunning view of the sea. The ambiance is relaxed, perfect for a casual meal while enjoying the fresh sea breeze. The restaurant specializes in BBQ grill seafood, where you get to choose two options from a tempting selection that includes prawns, chicken, salmon, and more. Each dish is accompanied by fresh bread and a vibrant salad, making for a satisfying and well-rounded meal. The seafood is grilled to perfection, with each bite delivering a burst of flavor, particularly the prawns which were succulent and flavorful. Desserts are a highlight here. The sticky toffee pudding is rich and indulgent, a must-try for anyone with a sweet tooth. The Eton mess, with its perfect blend of meringue, cream, and berries, offers a lighter but equally delicious end to the meal. Whether you opt for the cozy indoor seating or the breezy outdoor area, The Winking Prawn delivers a delightful dining experience with great food, friendly service, and a view that’s hard to beat. Highly recommended for seafood lovers and those looking to enjoy a meal with a scenic backdrop.

We had high hopes as the location is absolutely beautiful. Right on the water and the places was packed which we thought was promising. We got a few of the seafood platters to share. The seafood was cold, very fishy and did not taste fresh at all. As we were right by the sea we thought we would be safe ordering a meal like this but we were disappointed… others at the table also got the garlic prawns which were a step above the platters but ok at best. Seems like a bit of a lost opportunity considering the location.

You have to wait behind a rope before entering this place - a feature that's only ever happened to me at a night club! Then when allowed to enter we ask the friendly waitress for a ginger beer and a cup of tea. It's then that system takes over from function. We're told we have to scan a bar code and then order online. We can do that, I mean we're digitally literate, but you, the waitress are stood in front of me and I know what we want and I can talk and you can listen and remember our order or if it's too much to take on then you could write it down on one of those little pads that seem to work so well at cafes across the globe. But no, we have to get our smartphone out and then scan a QR code and then order our ginger beer and cup of tea, which arrives 5 minutes later, brought by our same friendly waitress. The drinks are fine and it's time to pay. Our friendly waitress arrives with a card machine. It's £9.50, which is a rip-off I know, but afterall it's Salcombe and we're probably lucky to be allowed in at all. Then there's a problem - the card machine won't connect. We're told the WiFi here is poor. So for the next 5 minutes we stand with our friendly waitress waiting for the digital gods to smile on us all the while gazing at the growing line of people waiting on the other side of the rope and wondering how did buying a ginger beer and a cup of tea get to be this complicated.

Happy (just) to pay £10.50 for a cream tea but the price tag brings with it an expectation of quality. What we got was two fair to middling scones and cheap / nasty cream and jam. The cream was never going to make it to two scones so I asked for more. Ten minutes later … NO. Was the emphatic response. IF YOU WANT MORE YOU HAVE TO PAY. ORDER IT ON THE MENU. It’s QR ordering (service pre paid 15%) and nowhere could I order more, but even if I could, why should I ? Piss enough clients off and in three years you’ll be mediocre. Over a minuscule portion of cream. Disappointed.

What I didn’t like and I’m not sure why was the roped off entrance to the restaurant- felt controlling and reminded me of their over zealous Covid rules . However friendly welcome and drinks and food were all good - service on the whole was excellent with the exception of asking for the bill which took an age to pay because a staff member was talking for along time to a table. Showed a lack of awareness. We would return to this salcombe stalwart. Fruit du mer was very good.

Also international serving staff don't get the opportunity to improve their English because all orders are via the app. The service is quicker but as you are on holiday what's the rush. There isn't the same incentive to tip as when you have a personal service. I think The Winking Prawn has lost a little of its personality which is a shame. Our whole group was very disappointed in the BBQ. We had the prawns, steak, halloumi, and salmon, and the salmon was the only good dish out of the lot. We visited here on our holiday and the location is lovely and the food was great. The only thing that made us feel uncomfortable was the hostile environment. The members of staff that served us outside was lovely and you can tell they were trying their best, however the man walking around in the shirt (I assume the manager) was very much outing members off staff in front of customer- maybe do this not in a customer facing area to embarrass the team. We then had this manager who was taking to customer right beside us- again assuming he knew these customer as we could hear him slagging the staff off loud and clear. Saying they need to pull their weight and they need to rebuild their reputation. Also he was going home after dinner service and how are they even trusted to close down, but he wasn’t in tomorrow to see when they messed up. Not very nice comments to be saying about your staff to customer in front of other customers really? My grandparents recently visited The Winking Prawn for breakfast, and unfortunately, their experience was quite disappointing. The buffet breakfast was cold and the plates were were also cold, making the meal even less appetizing. The eggs were floating in fat, which was unappealing and unhealthy. My grandfather, who usually finishes his food without complaint, could barely eat it. They politely mentioned the issue to the staff, but no action was taken to rectify the situation. The restaurant staff seemed indifferent to their concerns, which was disheartening. My grandparents, being the kind and gentle people they are, didn't want to push the issue further. However, it’s important for the restaurant to be aware of these issues to improve their service and food quality. We hope The Winking Prawn takes this feedback seriously to ensure better experiences for their future customers.

We came here last week after a walk in lovely Salcombe. We were greeted by children servers (nothing wrong with that in a family business) whom were very attentive. The menu was an old, sticky, laminated plastic sheet and the prices were outrageous! We ordered the Cajun chicken wrap x2 with two coffees. This came to just under £50. The childlike portion, contained wraps with chicken from a lunch packet. Not at all fresh and something I could buy at the supermarket for around £2. The ‘side salad’ was a bunch of leaves out of a salad bag, again, something I could buy for less than £2 and the coffee!!!The ‘mocha’ coffee served was the foulest thing I have put into my mouth. It was like hot chocolate made with water with watery coffee added. My partners cappuccino was burnt. I don’t understand how you can burn alternative milk, but they managed! After working in hospitality for many years I can safely say this place is a rip off. I would have happily paid the prices we paid,if the portion size and the food came half decent, but I came away feeling conned. To top it off I used the toilets before our long drive home, to find there were only 2 toilets for the staff and customers!!! Of which stained my white trousers BLACK due to the dirty slimy floor. I felt embarrassed walking back out to waiting customers for that same toilet. Utterly disgusting. If you are going to take peoples hard earned money, it is about time you do some work yourself to fix the clear issues you are having!!! We will never be back and have told our nearest and dearest to steer clear away from this awful place!

Seriously confused for the rating for this place. Apart from the location, this is some of the worst food I’ve had along the coast in the uk. And at such a high price tag. I had the prawn and crab salad with fries and my partner had the chicken wrap. The chicken was like packet chicken from Tesco and bagged Tesco pre made salad, the wrap, cut into two. Each side wasn’t even filled properly or wrapped. Simply folder and slapped on the plate. I wish we took photos to back it up. My salad was around £23 and there were still hard bits of crab meat, very bland salad with some random beans and peas in the bottom. Service was slow considering everything was served stone cold. Around 30 mins and ordered via a qr code ourselves. Please don’t waste your money here! Go into the harbour for decent grub. Mind blown this place has such high rating!

We were in the area and decided to stop here, as we've been a few times before. We were just looking to have a couple Lattes. They use an online ordering system which almost never works the times we've been, so we talked to two different servers explained we only wanted coffees. We sat 15 to 20 min when my partner finally went up to counter and asked about ordering them that we'd been waiting and had asked two servers to order them. He stated he'd have someone at table and there we sat, so it wasn't until we decided to up and leave, and my partner was quite irritated by this point, they tried to make it right. The problem is people around us and coming in were being taken care of and when you get to that point of upset, it ruins the mood. Guys, I know it gets busy and things happen but maybe rethink the online ordering and just have servers so people don't get missed. We wanted to pay cash and that system not set up for it.

We’ve been here when we visit Salcombe twice a year for about the last 20 years and have always loved it. This time was different and we won’t be back. We waited behind another couple in front of us, who were being talked through the menu by a member of staff (not at their request and couldn’t understand why they couldn’t sit down and read the menu for themselves). When she got to us and we told her we were just here for coffee, she looked at us, and spoke to us, like we were dirt. We were toldcan you pay online. When we said not really (we’re elderly - my Son is writing this in our behalf) - she said “well this is the way the world is going”. When we said we’re off, I turned round and caught her rolling her eyes about us to the next customers. Whoever this arrogant member of staff is, she’s doing you no favours whatsoever based on some other reviews on here and conversations with others locally. Such a shame.

Very tasty seafood, fast and friendly service. Especially if you are travelling by car, the road alone is worth the trip.

Great location, just had hot drinks and a bowl of chips. Service good, courteous, friendly. Not cheap, but then Devon is expensive on the whole.

It's more than a shack by the beach, it's an institution. Sea food of course dominates, service and smiles radiate and quality and class shine through. If you are looking for something that offers a quality product (great food) a quality experience (smiles and chat from all the staff) and a fabulous view/location (on the beach near enough) then this is a place worthy of a trip. We will be returning as soon as we can

Beautiful location, let down by rude, dismissive and very arrogant manager with zero people skills. The waitresses and waiters are very friendly and welcoming, the manager should take a leaf out of their book and learn some basic manners. This is my 4th visit however I will not be returning purely due to experience this individual.

Been coming to salcombe for years and years, and always look forward coming to the winking prawn for some lunch. Staff are always smiley and helpful, and the ‘po boy’ is a personal favourite. Also love how they sell winking prawn hoodies (which are very very soft and comfy).

Adored this place and returned especially to the area for it. Have been visiting here over 50 years. Star rating reflects this single return visit. Will just say disappointed with food and having to order food via app. Perhaps just me being nostalgic. What ever happened to the retro vibe that once was the winking prawn - I didn’t recognise this place at all, less the queues for the same 2 toilets there has always been. Time to find a new place to stop. Will cherish memories of what once was and have the merchandise to remind me of previous visits. PS. 3 bits of Brie and Chutney in a white roll for £13 - shameful.

Amazing food and great breakfast selection. One of my favourite breakfasts out in a while. We have visited for many years and winking prawn has never seemed to disappoint us!

A very popular eatery on the other side of the road at North sands beach, Salcombe. We have always found the staff friendly and helpful and a menu that is good for the beach. You mainly order your food online or via their app but the staff were also taking orders at the table today. The drinks arrived almost as soon as the online order (for 6 adults + 1 child) went in even though most tables were occupied, and the food arrived not long afterwards. We always enjoy going to The Winking Prawn and they are still as good as ever. It's also a good place to grab a drink if your on a walk around the local area.

Living locally and visited and supported year round, it seems once the Easter holidays start the service levels drop. Popped in at 3.30pm to ask for drinks, no problem was the reply we are open all day as serving dinner tonight. Told the server I was just going back to the car to get my children and dog, no problem was the reply there’s plenty of tables inside as well as the marquee. Returned 5 mins later, met by a different server who said that the marquee was now full, asked about all the many tables inside that were free ‘we are setting up for dinner now’ explained I’d just literally spoken to her colleague, just but was just offered outside table. Reluctantly went outside briefly (we were the only table!) looked like rain soon so went to a warmer welcoming place nearby. Winking Prawn - you need to be consistent, not only out if season! Sadly I won’t return now and

Lovely spot, staff and owners very friendly and accommodating. We arrived towards the end of lunch service …after we ate and was leisurely finishing off drinks; the owner popped over gave us her last remaining scones to take home (with jam and cream) for free. Was a really really kind gesture that made us smile ☺️ would definitely return!

Great location next to beach with views of the estuary. Food is also good quality and reasonably priced with friendly staff. It’s a 30min walk from central Salcombe but a wonderful way to see the estuary as you walk along side it to North Sands
