Restaurant is on the second floor of a building just on the out skit of Chinatown. The place is seriously in need of some upkeep. Staff are friendly but not too good. You would ask for things and they just never came. Even one of the main meals. The bar ran out of beer on tap on a Saturday night. Toilets are pretty minging too for a restaurant. Food was okay, but nowhere near fantastic.

Stuck in the 60s. Horrible interior, old and musty. Food and drinks overpriced and quality is poor. This was best Chinese in Manchester long time ago, but now is just stuck in the past and with such a great food scene in Manchester today, this is one to avoid. Service is decent.

I had reason to be in Manchester for the weekend and set up to meet my daughter in law and her boyfriend for lunch. My first thought was Yang Sing as when I lived in the North West this place was famous. We were so looking forward to it but was shocked at how downbeat it had become. It was only open on the 2nd floor. We were seated in the middle right in line of a cold draft from the doors. The service was slow and haphazard, the food was distinctly ordinary and no different than any local Chinese takeaway. The price was still high though at £164 for 4 and the only alcohol in this were 2 bottles of beer and one bottle of wine. I wasn’t planning on making a tip but they added a service charge anyway, which I paid. I was so very disappointed how this place has declined and would never go back Sorry guys but what happened to the Yang Sing of yesteryear?

I'm sorry but this is awful. From the food to the staff to the decor to the price, this is exactly the kind of place that should be closed down. Plain and simple. Good restaurants, sod that, average restaurants are losing business as long as this place stays open. We arrived, shown the table in a near-empty sad vault of a room that resembled a 70s function hall. We asked the waiter what he would recommend from a vast menu (surprisingly lacking in many vegetable options, despite its size). His reply, I've only been here 3 months, I've never tried the food. But I do like Sushi (sic). Another waiter appeared, we gave her our order, she said, I won't have that it's too Chinese, or if you like tofu, I would have the prawns and saffron (I kid you not.) In fact, twice she would point out a completely different meat dish when we ordered a fish dish. Naturally, the vegetarian Ma Po came with pork, less expected was the argument with the manager over whether it was pork or not. Leaving a restaurant had never been so sweet

We have been eating here sporadically for over twenty years and the standard of food is still excellent. We had an evening meal before the theatre with daughters family. Dim sum were good as starters and the mains also good. If I have to be picky the Szechuan dishes we chose eg Ma Po tofu did not have enough chilli, but this is usual in basically Cantonese restaurants. Quick service, reasonable price and friendly waiters.

Arranged for a birthday treat for a partner who loves Dim Sum. Had to climb the stairs only to be met with what looked like a hospital room with chairs and tables in it. The lighting was so harsh I felt like I was sitting in a school hall having my dinner. It feels like one of those places Gordon Ramsey would come - but even he wouldn’t be able to fix this place! The staff were friendly but very unorganised and untrained, the food was below average and the place had a cheap Chinese buffet feel to it even though it’s advertised as something nicer. Please please please do not go here. You will be utterly disappointed and more research will find that there are some much better places in Manchester to go!!!

Visited for dim sum last week. Never been before and the dim sum menu on display outside the restaurant looked interesting with quite a few novel dishes. Prices also seemed reasonable. When we looked at the dim sum menu in the restaurant though, it seemed trimmed down and didn't have all the options from the menu outside. They seemed to seat all the guests at one corner of the restaurant instead of attempting to social distance them which was odd considering the restaurant wasn't full. We ordered a selection of steamed & fried dim sum. The steamed ones were very disappointing as the dumpling skin was too thick and rubbery so might have been overcooked. Siew mai had a very strong stinky pork smell, prawn in the har kau was hard. The chives & prawn filling wasn't bad but let down by the rubbery skin & the skin on flower dumpling with nuts and the har kau fell apart easily which wasn't great. The glutinous rice was probably the best steamed dish, alongside the chicken feet. In terms of the fried stuff, the prawn in rice paper was miserly portion-wise compared to what we have had in other establishments & the yam croquettes were tasteless. The mixed meat croquettes were very tasty and was the best of the fried dim sum we ordered. With a 10% service charge, the bill was bumped up significantly for what was a very average meal. Not sure what their cooked food is like but our dim sum experience hasn't inspired us to return anytime soon. There are definitely much better dim sum places in and around Manchester!

Had this been our first visit, we might have checked reviews first. We’d have read the recent ones and gone somewhere else. But this is the Yang Sing. We have been going to the Yang Sing for years. We don’t live in Manchester but it’s always been a reason to visit. Sadly, the poor place is in a calamitous decline. Most of the building is closed and diners now wind their way upstairs, into the 1970s. The soulless space sets the tone. The food is OK but no longer extraordinary. And it’s insanely, unjustifiably, expensive. There’s no evidence of the family now, either. I don’t think their heart is in it. The stars I’ve awarded are for the staff. I hope the restaurant looks after them because they are now the only thing that sets it apart from any high street takeaway. The stars

We have been visiting the Yang Sing on and off for nearly 25 years now and can honestly say never again. We had a banquet meal for 4 on Saturday (as we had done many times previuosly) but never in a canteen. We ate on the first floor so called restaurant above what we would call the old resteraunt on the ground floor and basement below. On arrival we were told that they were short staffed and the service may take longer than normal, but to be fair we didn’t have to wait long at all.The restaurant had Zero ambience, too bright and to be honest looked dirty and very tacky. The stairs to the toilets were badly lit and the toilets were untidy and dirty not what we have experienced previously and definitely was not up to the usual standard and expectation. Once we had got past the disappointment of the surroundings we ordered the food (Soup, Dim-sung and mains) and as said didn’t have to wait long. The soup was hot and tasty and the main meal and rice was excelent as usual which is more can be said about the Dim-Sung. On two occasions we had to ask for an extra one as the served 3 instead of 4, the dumplings were rubbery and tasteless and the serving of prawn toast was not even a mouth full. When you pay over £175 for the meal with 1 round of drinks which i think was extortionate you expect better as this was once a premium restaurant, not a mediocre takeaway.

We ordered Red wine in the end and they just came with the bottle open and simply poured it without asking us to taste first. Simple things but when you are having a special meal then you expect a bit better service. I visited this restaurant with a load of colleagues on Friday 20th December 2019. Take into account that I first visited this restaurant over 20 years ago (When Harry Yeung had it). I have visited a few times since over the years and it has been fine. Not this latest visit. At over £30 per person set meal we were expecting something good. What we received were small portions of food. Admittedly the food was good but there was not even half enough to go round. One steamed dumpling per person and not even enough spring rolls for one each. Absolutely ridiculous. Then the second course of crispy duck and pancakes etc. To be fair that was nice and there was enough wraps. So, taking into account the old saying of ‘Save the best till last’. Well, it’s sort of true here... the main dishes were tasty and hot, however, only a few of our party could tell you that because there was nowhere near enough food to go round. Working it out it would have been cheaper to choose 3 courses each and it would have cost less than the set meal price. Absolute idiotic portion sizes for the price. Oh, and those carpets on the upper floor...They are seriously, seriously filthy like an Alsatian’s Blanket. Taking into account the competitive nature (and great food available) of such restaurants in Manchester I rank this as VERY BAD.

So having booked a table for 10 (in advance and pre-ordering our set menu meals) We arrived to a blank looking front of house, who was clearly not expecting us. After a 25 minute wait at the bar, we were shown to the table, which even at this point we though was not a great sign.

Really good Chinese in area with plenty of choice. Restaurant was almost full on aTuesday evening so that was a good sign. Tried the Dim Sum, Duck then Kung Po Chicken, extra spicy. Service was good. Not cheap but nice place

This was the best Chinese restaurant me and my partner have ever been to! The service was top and the food was out of this world, proper traditional Chinese food. Everything was very reasonable for the standards we received.

I first went to the Yang Sing more than 30 years ago. It was in its heyday: exciting, innovative, full of new flavours and ideas. Sadly, on the evidence of a recent visit, those days are long gone; it appears to be living on its former reputation. The menu, like the cooking and even the furniture, is tired and out of date. The Yang Sing seems to inhabit a time warp: left behind by the varied and refreshing developments in Asian cuisine over the last two decades.

A superb lunch yesterday at The Yang Sing. Hadn't been for probably ten years and the food is as good as ever. Service was fine. What struck me was how tired the restaurant decor, carpets, entrance appeared. With all the revenue this place must generate maybe some re-investment is called for ?

We booked the Yang Sing restaurant as I had been there many years ago but unfortunately the week after I was there a fire had caused extensive damage.

I visited Yang Sing for lunch on Tuesday (12.11.19) and was very satisfied with Woo Kok, Beef dumplings with ginger & spring onion, Cha sui bao, Mock sharks fin soup and Cha sui cheung fun. A wide selection of excellent dim sum with the owner regularly in the kitchen. This was a little dearer than the average for Chinatown but well worth the difference unless one knows exactly where to go.

excellent dim sum lovely meals, just note the bill includes service charge which was fine as the service was good but I do think the customer should be able to choose who to tip and how much.

I am troubled by all the negative reviews on here. We arrived on a Saturday evening with no reservation. We were seated quickly by enthusiastic staff. We ate from the adventurous end of things (chicken feet, dumpligs, , and had a great time. The only small slip was needing to ask for a forgotten rice dish. The staff gave us a tour of the sweet dim sum to finish, which was really nice and good fun. I recommend Yang Sing.

Nice meal with family. Good value, duck with pancakes a bit overdone but tasty, dim sum very good, prawns with XO sauce very nice. Chicken with bamboo shoots good, crispy pork very good as well.

I’ve never been to this restaurant before; but my wife had many years ago and she had a terrific experience. So, as we were in town and staying close we opted for a meal here. What a disappointment it turned out to be.

Our group of 11 had dinner here on a weekday. It was relatively empty. We enjoyed the roast duck which was large and meaty and not too fatty. The fish fillets were fresh and tasty as were the vegetable dishes. Didn’t quite enjoy the curry chicken and curry beef that we had ordered as the curry taste somehow tasted different from what we are used to. Overall I would say we enjoyed this Chinese meal fairly well. Prices are reasonable and service was good.

We booked a table for 16, 14 of us showed up. We were shown to two separate tables. The manager explained that they didn’t have a table for 16, it would have been nice to have been told at the time of booking. We were given two bottles of prosecco to make up for it! A waitress finally suggested that as there were only 14 she could make a single table for 12 into a 14 so we got there in the end, if a little squashed.

Didn't pre-book but arrived early Saturday evening and were lucky to get a table without delay. Food was on the whole excellent but due to the authenticity of some dishes, I would advise checking with the waiters about what some dishes entail. We encountered a pork dish that was 'unexpected' to a western pallet. None the less a lovely meal and good service. Definitely will go again.£££
