All the pics of food should be deleted as this pub does not do food! However, as stated by others they do welcome you to get a take away and bring it in - there are a Chinese and a chippy very close. Pub is very traditional working peoples drinking pub but we found everyone very friendly, despite us being very obviously not from that demographic!

We were in the area for work and popped out for dinner and then drinks after a meeting. We were a bit daunted initially, having come straight from a meeting in our formal clothes and being the only ones in the pub speaking English, but we were met with a friendly welcome from everyone. The lady behind the bar could tell I wasn't from the area and had a nice chat with me, asking how I was finding it all etc. The drinks are a little basic, for example the only proper (non fruity) cider is Strongbow, I would have liked to have had some local drinks available, but it's still a great place for a few casual drinks. Especially enjoyable was the Welsh language music with all the locals singing along - Iechyd da!

It was a shame that we were staying in the town on a Monday night, as very few places were open for food: Y Meirion a pub that was recommended. We had a warm welcome from the bar staff, and when we asked if food was available, were told that unfortunately not: "However," she said. "You're more than welcome to get a takeaway and eat it here in the pub." So we did - and we were even provided with napkins and cutlery. Great to have banter with some of the locals, and lovely to hear Welsh spoken (we tried, but are not proficient enough to say much more than the basics!).

I popped in here for a very quick drink after a 7 hour drive from Essex. There were only 3 people in the pub (locals) but they were friendly. It was the hottest day of the year. The lady behind the bar was very quick to serve me a nice cold pint of cider and offer my dog a bowl of water. She kindly filled my water bottle for me as I left too. The pub was clean, tidy and not cluttered at all. I walked past a few times and it was much livelier at the weekends!

Simple really. You walk into a pub at lunchtime and the person behind the bar makes you feel welcome, takes your cash and you take your drink. Perhaps one of the locals gives you a nod, which you return. You sit down and drink your drink. Not in this place. I walked in with my wife at luchtime. No-one was serving and the man behind the bar pointedly said not a word and continued to work on a light fitting. This continued when other customers came in and he turned his back. We left. Through all of this the regulars were peering at us as if we had come from a different world, which I suppose we had. The lesson; Blaenau is the same as ever. Stay on the train.

Read the reviews and booked a table here. It lived up to the hype. Only go for 2 if you are super hungry or greedy! The place comes across as a very popular locals pub (maybe more tourists in the summer) but the staff were super friendly and although very busy gave us lots of attention. The portion sizes are big and the prices very reasonable. Only constructive criticism - get some local beers in..even if it's just bottles...even if it's just for the tourists ;-) I'm drooling just thinking of that rib again. My advice, get there now!

I went here twice. Once for drinks, once for drinks and food. The second time I asked for the food menu and was given it. I waited for a friend to join me and passed the menu to the couple beside me. They ordered, then we were ready to order and were told sorry, the chef is full. It seems they set aside only so many portions and it would have been nice to know this beforehand. From what I could see (and remember, I'm not British) the food look fairly pub standard: fries/chips, peas and a meat.

Had a meal in Y Meirion early evening on a Friday. Pub very busy (and noisy!) but in a nice way with a lot of chatter by cheerful people. The pub is a traditional, basic local, which I much prefer to the 'plastic' chain pubs you often find these days. No frills, but good atmosphere. Although we are not local but are tourists visiting the area, we felt very welcome. We found the last table available, and ended up eating in the bar area rather than the restaurant section. Our dog was welcome too, which is important for us. The lager was very nice and the meals were superb. We both ha steak which was very nicely done.

After our "local" was closed for several months, we had to venture a bit further afield for decent pub food as the only other alternative near us was dreadful (Oakley Arms). So we hopped on a bus and ended up in Blaenau Ffestiniog, and Y Merion. Firstly, they sell decent beer - not sure about ales - and the locals and staff are friendly. The owner John is very accomodating. What can you say about the food? Its Pub food, but as good if not better than anywhere else and for the price you can't complain. In fact, we had family staying with us from Holland and they preferred Y Meirion to Dylans in Criccieth!I love the Steak and Ale pie, and the ribs are delicious. Burger decent and their own "MFC" (Merion Fried Chicken) is great too go for the spicy version.I get fed up paying for mediocre food that is was overpriced, which is why the Meirion is now my favourite pub for food in the area. It is what it is - and you more than get what you pay for and doesn't pretend to be anything other than decent, honest food at a sensible price. Obviously, everybodys tastes are different, but this is the best value for money pub food you'll get. Best to book as it is a small pub with limited seating.

We hadn't planned to eat here, however we were given no other choice, as the other pub in the village wasn't serving food the night we were there.Unfortunately this is a smallish pub, and if you want to eat, I'd suggest booking a table, as there aren't that many available. There's nothing fancy or stylish about this pub, it's your bog standard. What makes this place is the people. The guy at the bar was very helpful, always service with a smile, and good banter.Another guy seems to mostly run the kitchen when it is needed but produces excellent food. Seems to be all homemade! Impressive portions. We have their curry, southern fried chicken and gammon steak. There was nothing left on the plates! And of course you have to have room for dessert, which again was delicious and good portions of custard (which is normally in short supply at pub restaurants). We were checked on regularly to make sure we wanted for nothing, and the overall price for 5 people eating a main course, and 3 desserts was under £50! Very happy with this place. Would highly recommend, especially if you like to chat to the locals. Prices are cheap, but you get good service and excellent food.

I'm staying in Blaenau for a couple of nights and there really isn't much choice when it comes to restaurants- the only places I found open were a fish & chip shop, Indian (which is excellent- I've reviewed that on here too) and Y Meirion. The menu looked pretty good so I went in. The interior (much like the exterior) is not exactly welcoming- it's very much a locals pub and has a good atmosphere for drinking but the dining experience leaves rather a lot to be desired. When I found a menu, the bar lady (who was extremely polite and friendly) read out a list of what they didn't have- which was pretty much half the menu. Alas, this list didn't include their steak and Guinness pie so I settled for that; unfortunately 2 minutes later she came back to tell me that they had in fact run out of this too.Anyway I chose the Chicken Kiev and some garlic & herb bread. This garlic and herb bread (which when put like they do on the menu sounds lovely) was abysmal- it was cheap frozen cardboard with not a hint of garlic (or herbs) and had been frozen so long that even when cooked there were ice stains on the bottom. The chicken kiev was on the other hand very garlicky yet the chicken was terrible and the breadcrumbs soggy, and a very pale colour as opposed to the usual crisp golden brown- yet again the cheapest frozen rubbish they could find no doubt. The chips would probably have been nice had they not been cold. The baked beans were good though...It was indeed cheap but I wouldn't have wanted to pay even that for the food they offered My advice- avoid!

Advised to eat here and was not disappointed. The meals were of great quality and exceptionally large! The owner/chef could not do enough to please even offering to bag up what we couldn't eat! The bar staff and regulars were all very welcoming. Would definitely recommend.

We arrived in the daytime for a quick bit to eat for lunch. This is a cosy, but tired pub with friendly staff. The service was really friendly, and that was great. We were told that there wasn't any card service, so we ordered from the lunch menu. The menus weren't clean, and that was one of the reasons for losing one star. The decor was tired, and it our seats could have been cleaned. So one more lost star. The food, in the nicest possible way, was frozen. the burgers we had were served with chips and a bap, but no salad. The portions were good sized, but neither of us ate the full meal. Sadly, I would say to look elsewhere.

This has become my local. The staff are warm and friendly, and nothing is too much trouble. The Sunday lunches are HUGE and delicious and the best value going. I can only manage a kids portion! Drinks prices are reasonable. The weekend entertainment is great fun .... Never any trouble and everyone getting on and having a good time. Call in and try it.

I first went to The Meirion a couple of months ago with a crowd and I loved it. We had ordered in advance as there was quite a crowd of us but lots of other people were eating and the place was generally buzzing. My friend and I shared a plate of gorgeous nachos and we I enjoyed it so much I insisted that we went to celebrate my birthday. We booked a table for 6 (in the end there was 8 of us) but when we got there not only was there no table reserved, neither was there anywhere for 6 people to sit together. Still the barmaid bought us menus (two to share between us) and we went to the bar to order our food. Four of us chose the nachos to share and were told that they no longer served them, despite them being on the menu we had been handed. We then asked for rump steaks and were told they only had two, only one lasagne and two gammon steaks. The bar maid kept saying that she wouldn't take our order to the kitchen until we had all ordered as the food wouldn't all arrive together - at that point we weren't particularly bothered about that as we intended to stay for the evening anyway but she was most adamant.I then said that I felt a bit let down, in that, I had got several people to travel from Porthmadog to spend the evening there on my recommendation and that they didn't have anything that we wanted. The barmaid replied that she was only telling us what she didn't have. At no point did she either offer us an apology and continued with a most unfortunate attitude. The final straw came when I asked to pay for my friend and my meals and she said 'we don't do cards'. Again no apology or explanation. As it meant that we would have had to have walked back to the town to get money from the hole in the wall we decided that we would all go and eat somewhere else.Within five minutes of arriving in Ty Gorsef they had laid up and lit handles on a lovely table for eight and we had a lovely meal and plenty more drinks.I rarely write bad reviews being of the camp 'if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing' but I think the management or owners of The Meirion should know that they not only lost the sale of eight meals and drinks that evening, but that none of us will go back and this is mainly due to the wholly unacceptable attitude of the bar maid who could really benefit from training in customer service.
