An absolute gem of a cafe. Within a meticulously restored heritage building set in Incredible surroundings. The breakfasts are ELITE level. Exceptional local produce put together by a team who are clearly passionate about great food and service. Pair this with a visit to the adjoining tretower court - highly recommended.

Visiting the CADW's marvelous Tretower Court in Crickhowell and planned to visit the 'cafe' for lunch. Big mistake. Uninspiring decor, rude staff and "only serving coffee", which was served cold! We also had to endure an enormous fridge being moved around the premises, blocking our (much-needed by then) exit. Why even bother publishing opening times when it's clear you neither like nor want customers. Highly unprofessional and a huge disappointment.

Great meal in an unusual and attractive setting. A modern dining area ihas been created within the partly ruined medieval Tretower Court, a largish fortified manor. Great food, limited menu of local produce very imaginatively prepared, very high quality. Also a short wine list, sensibly priced to give a reasonable choice. Service was absolutely charming, we also met the chef who showd a real passion for his cooking. A very memorabl experience

Simply wonderful experience. Great food, great atmosphere. Only 12 or so tables. First visit to Y Bwyty Bach for a lunchtime meal. The food was delicious, cooked and presented to a very high standard. The portions were just right. The wine list was extensive and the Blancs de Blancs fizz, particularly good. We are already planning our second visit when we shall try the taster menu and wine flight. Thank you to Connor and team for a lovely meal.

An unforgettable roast, every mouthful was absolutely delicious. A very affordable 3 course meal (£34) accompanied by a great wine list. This is something really rather special. The setting in a restored medical barn (Cadw) as part of Tretower Castle is just gorgeous. Utterly unique and atmospheric. The dinnner was incredible: one of the best meals I have had in a long time. A big emphasis on local provenance and excellent quality ingredients. A five course tasting menu, paired with some really delicious wines. Friendly, efficient staff. It is not cheap at £115 per person. But for the quality of the food, the experience and the setting it is money well spent. Some meals you enjoy and forget: this is not one of those. If you have a special occasion and want an experience that you are going to remember then I highly recommend it. Michelin famously had their definition of “ worth making a special trip for” and this definitely reaches that level. (And as an amusing addition we had taxi trouble so Chef gave us a lift home. Which was incredibly kind of him but somehow seems totally in keeping).

Another fabulous meal here. This time we had lunch and it was fantastic from start to finish. Service was excellent- just the right pace and level of attentiveness. The lunch menu with just a few choices (3 courses for £40 - well four if you include the awesome sourdough and seaweed butter) is light, seasonal, unusual and clever. It’s from a chef who uses ingredients in a sensible non flamboyant yet delightfully plated way; just brilliantly cooked and with one eye on his bottom line. Seaweed in our butter and our delicious hollandaise, black garlic with the asparagus and the beef, nasturtium leaves with the starter and the main. It made the courses flow and feel connected somehow. The portion sizes aren’t huge (which we prefer) and we left feeling very satisfied. The crème caramel with strawberries (fresh strawberries, compressed strawberries, strawberry gel and memorable sorbet - suitable for vegetarians too) was sublime. The only problem was deciding what to savour last. The kitchen is run by a very small and efficient crew, just two at front of house. It was a delight.

I am rarely moved to write restaurant reviews but our recent discovery of Y Bwyty Bach and our three dining experiences there have been highlights of the year and deserve a lengthy description. We first went for Sunday lunch with friends in early May 2023 and ate the most fantastic take on a traditional British roast. The selection was limited to two or three items at each course, including a vegetarian option. The freshness, seasonality, presentation and quality of ingredients, and the sheer imagination, in bringing to life what is traditionally a rather stayed British meal, made this menu stand out. We ate Wye Valley asparagus, wild garlic, locally sourced beef and pork, salt-roasted beetroot and the first crop of Cheddar Valley strawberries. We returned eagerly for a birthday dinner a deux the next week and ate the £65 six-course sampling menu. It was simply stunning! In fact, it was so good that we returned for another birthday dinner 10 days later! So, we have enjoyed two of these six-course dinner menus. One of us is pescatarian and had adapted menus which the staff were only too pleased to arrange.) From the amuse-bouche snacks at the start to the sweet treat at the end, the two evening experiences were exceptional and without doubt the loveliest meals we have enjoyed anywhere in Wales. Comparisons are invidious, they say, but I would go as far as saying that the sheer brilliance of combinations, apparent simplicity (with undoubted underlying sophistication),and beauty of presentation are on a par with the only Michelin star restaurant we have experienced recently. That is Restaurant Lafleur in the Palmengarten, Frankfurt, where chef Andreas Krolik creates small beautiful dishes of exceptional flavour and quality, such as we experienced with our six-course dinner menus at Y Bwyty Bach. The restaurant setting is an ancient stone barn of immense character, set against the rolling pastoral landscape of Monmouthshire. It is furnished in an unfussy, comfortable modern style. The fusion of bucolic and modern works incredibly well and there has clearly been great attention to artistic detail in selection of plain furnishings for the dining room and of table settings and handmade plates that compliment the surroundings and the food. The wine list was not extensive and is not cheap, but of rare and excellent quality. Over three meals, we have selected bottles of beautiful French rose wines of the Provence style, a gorgeous heavy Spanish red, and a bone-dry Austrian white (gruner vetliner). At our last dinner, one of us opted for the “wine flight” of selected wines at four of the courses. All were of high quality and perfectly selected, from a crisp Kentish sparkling brut to a luscious dessert Sauternes. The service at Y Bwyty Bach can not be faulted. It is friendly, professional and attentive but does not intrude and there is no flummery. The staff are knowledgeable and well-grounded to explain the menus and their creation. At our last visit the chefs, Rod and Connor, also presented the food to us and their passion for their work, knowledge and skill when talking about the dishes were a real pleasure to enjoy. In total, this incredible restaurant provides a unique experience of enjoying British cuisine at world-class standard in a relaxed and unhurried setting. I would recommend it as among the finest dining experiences I have ever had anywhere. Y Bwyty Bach is truly exceptional art and alchemy.

Probably the nicest salmon we've had with a scrumptious cheese cake to follow and lovely white wine too. Waiter had a good sense of humour and kept us entertained on a quiet night and said "don't forget us on Tripadvisor" so here it is!
