The food here was fantastic. We stumbled upon this place after looking for somewhere nearby Kings Cross. We were nearly tempted by a few other restaurants nearby but glad we continued to Xia Kai. Whilst it has a very unassuming interior the food certainly made up for this. The menus are all represented by pictures and a brief decoration which was excellent. All 3 of us commented on how good it was. I’d definitely recommend finding this place and going for some lunch or dinner. I had beef in chilli oil which was probably one of the best Chinese dishes I’ve ever had in the UK! Go and enjoy the food.

If you are looking for some very good food and staying near Kings Cross, we highly recommend this place. The food was nothing short of fabulous. The crispy beef, chicken and peppers, and stir fried noodles were superb. Everything was lightly fried, crispy, and not at all greasy like you might find elsewhere. We are still reeling at how delicious everything was.

Basic decor. Tucked away at side of St Pancras Station. Great traditional food. Best hot and sour soup in town. Duck pancakes and other traditional choices. Sensitive to allergies. Adjusted my order to avoid prawn oil.

This place was highly recommended by a friend of mine. The waiter recommended us the boiled fish in chilli oil as we love spicy food, it was heaven for us, seabass was very fresh, full of taste and texture. The lamb with cummin was also very delicious. Friendly and cosy environment. Would return for sure

Visited after reading the article on guardian and we were certainly not disappointed. Reasonable priced authentic north eastern cuisine, absolutely delicious and excellent service too. Highly recommended.

I'd read about Xin Kai in an article about a reviewer who praises 'local eateries' rather than top end. Upon reading the menu, my detective skills should have warned me .. photos of the dishes, the website wording 'Authentic North East Chinese and Sichuan Cuisine with tantalising dishes" didn't live up to expectations .. lots of chopped up red chillies on show, but little in the way of spicy warm sauce or oils. Rather disappointing.

The roast pork buns are very delicious. I've been eating them since they cost 1 pound. Now they cost 2 pounds and they're still as delicious as ever

I paid £11 for king prawn FRIED rice, but I received plain BOILED rice with prawns. The rice was very bland and fluffy. I contacted the restaurant and they agreed to send a replacement. However the rice was not much better. Very disappointing to spend £11 on fluffy rice I could've cooked at home. Avoid if you want tasty, authentic Chinese fried rice.

The food is delicious. I work nearby so I often come here to eat. However, the attitude of the waiter is really scary and disappointing. The restaurant opens at 12 o'clock. I asked politely at the door at 11:45. The original words were: Hello, can I order in advance now? Then a woman who is a bit older rushed out and shouted loudly: Are you going to pay more? If you don't pay more, why should the chef process it? I said I was just asking. I would like to ask how a customer would know how your working hours are calculated. I just want to ask politely if I can order first and pick it up later. I want to know who is this resentment about working hours and wages directed at? Why bully the customers? Aren't waiters a service industry... Why are you fighting for your rights against the customers? ?

One of the better meals at this traditional favorite in Mayfair. The food was well-prepared and presented nicely on this occasion.
