This place is for those who appreciate authentic Vietnamese food - I enjoyed their Pho and can say that there's no other place like this!

I took my parents for lunch and was astonished at the poor levels of hygiene and service. There were flies everywhere and the floor had liquid spills. The food was equally as bad, my curry had big lumps of curry powder in it.

we had one appetizer and two mains, a meat and a fish one. they were absolutely bland when not completely awful. the fact that the place was completely empty at dinner time should have told us something... there's a proper vietnamese reustarant near finchley central station, go to that one for a much better experience!

This was our first experience of Vietnamese food and it was very enjoyable. The flavours were fresh and interesting, the service was friendly and efficient and we would certainly visit again.

This was one of the worst meals I have had in a long time! At best the food could be described as bland but in reality it was inedible. We left nearly every course. I can forgive poor decor and atmosphere in a restaurant if the food is good but this did not even come close. What was most annoying is that I came on a prepaid groupon deal which meant that they already had my money and I could not refuse to pay.

Overall I'd agree with a lot of what the previous reviewer wrote, though we enjoyed the food a lot more so give it a higher rating. The outside could certainly do with smartening up a bit, but we felt the internal decor was quite clean, smart and fresh (though they do indeed still have some X-mas decorations up! :-) ). They'd obviously also taken advice on the temperature as it was plenty warm enough. It was lunchtime when we visited so the restaurant was quite empty, but some Vietnamese diners augured well. The menu was very interesting and the food we ordered did not disappoint. My starter of quail wings were very tasty and in a delicious spicy coating, while guest's salt and pepper squid came coated in a wonderfully light tempura-style batter. My main of Vietnamese seafood curry was quite rich and heavy, but just the ticket on a cold day, while guest's seafood noodles were also good, though the squid was a tad rubbery. Egg-fried rice completed the meal and was far more tasty than is generally the case with this common dish. We weren't drinking alcohol but the vietnamese green tea was fine. Service was prompt and efficient, though it would have been nice if the waitress had smiled a bit more.Prices were very reasonable and overall we thought this restaurant was a real find. Even with the few minor criticisms the quality of the food means we will definitely be coming back.

We went here for lunch on a weekday, and we were a bit put off by the scruffy exterior and the leftover Christmas decorations (half way through February), but heartened to see a few Asian diners - that generally means that it's at least authentic. The restaurant was a bit cold, physically and in atmosphere. Tiled floors and very widely spaced tables did not make for a cosy ambience on a cold and windy day. The service was also cool. The waitress showed us to our table and left us with menus, and then disappeared. No offers of drinks, and we had to wait a while for her to reappear before we could get her attention to take our order. Throughout the meal, she did respond when we managed to get her attention, and ran everywhere rather than walking, but was not proactive at all - we always had to wait for her to appear and then try to get her attention. The menu sounded interesting, but somewhat limited in range. The food, when it came, was also a bit spartan - with the one exception of the glorious goat sate starter.. It all came across as very healthy and simple, but you didn't feel there was in any way anything special about it. The seafood curry had three prawns, four lumps of very rubbery squid and two equally tough mussels. No questions were asked when I left all the seafood except the prawns, even though the bowl was clearly still more than half full. My husband's chicken stirfry was also a bit dull, lacking in sauce and seasoning. We did have a very nice bottle of wine though! All in all, we wondered why we had made the effort - we did not feel as if the experience was in any way special, and we both felt the need of a little pampering after such a bleak meal. So we went across the road to the Cafe Melange and had cake and hot chocolate to warm ourselves up and restore our faith.Bottom line - I would not bother to go Xin Chao again. A far better Vietnamese is the Vy Nam in Finchley Central down the road.
