XI' AN OXFORD in Oxford

Have been going regularly once a month for a while. The food is very tasty. Latterly though have been placed in conservatory with large noisy party each time we visit . The space is not well lit and have to ask for extra lighting and so disappointing that apart from sizzling dishes , food served on cold plate and barely warm .The beef in black bean and green pepper sauce had one pice of pepper . And the lamb with ginger and spring onion plenty of onion but no spring onion!

Amazing gluten free Chinese food!! For the first time in my life as a coeliac, I managed to get gluten free Chinese takeaway and it was soo delicious! The takeaway menu has a star next to all the dishes that could be made gluten free and there was a huge selection! When we were given the order in the takeaway boxes, we were shown that all the gluten free dishes had a little gluten free sticker to distinguish them from the standard versions which I really appreciated. Staff were lovely and the restaurant itself has a great atmosphere so would love to eat in next time. Highly recommend!

Honestly one of the best restaurants i have ever been. Everything was excellent.

I must honestly say there is nothing negative to comment about Xi'an restaurant. The personal is very friendly, the food was not only excellent but was also ready very fast. Everything was delightfull: food, service and the ambience were excellent.

Best Chinese food I've had in the last 40 years and the staff were very friendly and polite if I'm ever in Oxford again I will definitely visit again thank you.

We were so lucky to find Xi’an, not only as far as I know the only Chinese to offer gluten free, but the Best Chinese we’ve ever had! Travel a considerable way and have been coming for years. Thank you Gary and your team.

We attended with a group of 20 people. Service was excellent. Food was well prepared.

If you are looking for Chinese food or xian local food, avoid this restaurant. It is far from Chinese food and xian in every aspect. The kung pao chicken has nothing to do with kung pao. Plus the dish size is really small.

I have eaten in many Chinese restaurants over the years but I have never had food better than at Xi’an. Everything was delightfully flavoursome, cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. The service and surroundings were excellent as well which made for a really special evening. I look forward to returning very soon.

Went in to collect a collection got it home still piping hot friendly happy staff and caitered to my needs absolutely the best chinese I have had, amazing fresh tasty food well done guys you have gained a new regular customer

Really disappointed with the food. This Chinese was recommended to my partner and I by family. I’ll start with the positives, the service was good and it has a nice atmosphere. The chicken satay skewers were decent enough and the shrimp fried rice was good. In terms of negatives, the rest of the food was honestly not worth us eating. We ordered; the hot n spicy soup the bits of chicken and shrimp were nice but the soup was nasty. sweet n sour chicken was okay but by no means good. I don’t know whether it was too fatty but the consistency and taste was of a poor standard. House noodles were dreadful. You can see from the photo that some of the noodles were dry and crunchy, like they’d been sat under a heat lamp for a couple of hours. The sauce was okay but again had a similar consistency to the sweet n sour and was very oversweet. Chips were okay, we got the chilli and garlic but usually you get some form of seasoning from a chinese on chilli and garlic chips. Not here I’m afraid. We also had a surf n turf dish (seen in a bowl of noodles). I can be a little fussy when it comes to seafood but it was vile. I had one scallop and really, really struggled to not spit it out. All in it came to £90 which for a Chinese feast is about expected. However, would have been a lot happier getting a takeaway from somewhere else. I will say to their, we went on a Wednesday night so it may be a case of lacking fresh produce. Having said that, we won’t be back.

Very relaxing staff good manager very attentive Gary always seem to find time to chat and make sure all is good ,only a small point coke at £3.50 seems a little on the expensive side especially if you are driving in all great place to eat

Not a place I would recommend ate there in a party of 7 went for the fixed menu £28 per person you basically got 6 dishes and a rice plus shredded duck starter which barely stretched to you all ended adding another starter and a couple of dishes to the mains - the portions were about the size you get in a takeaway which is ok if only 2 of you are eating and to be honest tasted no better than a takeaway but with a couple of drinks that almost £50 a head and ended going home and ordering a pizza so if you want quality don’t go there,if you want plenty don’t go there , if you want to be rinsed then go there

Wonderful evening - exemplary food and service. So much attentiveness towards our allergies / intolerances which meant we could eat without worrying about mistakes or the wrong food. Will definitely be back to eat again.

We (group of 9) had dinner there. Given the price of the menu, I would expect a much higher standard than most other Chinese restaurants in Oxford. The food however was average. The fried noodles was good. Fried rice and spicy Tofu were very average and were in tiny portion. Chinese tea was charged on a per head basis at just under £5 per person (which was shockingly expensive). Service was good and most staff were very attentive. Environment was clean with high hygienic standard. Overall, I think it’s positioned to attractive non-Chinese customers. There was no parking provided and you need to find somewhere to park in the nearby.

Only star is for the service as food taste disgusting badly cooked , no flavor, I understand different people different tastes but this one just disgusting,change ur chef boss !!! One to avoid guys !

The food is not catered for Chinese taste buds unfortunately. I would expect the stir fried brocolli with chicken has flavour but they just boiled the brocolli and fried the chicken separately 😂 it is however good atmosphere and service.

We have been going to eat at Xian and getting takeaway (over an hour round trip now) for years simply because they do the best food anywhere and have always been consistently fantastic, can't recommend highly enough!

Lovely food and such lovely, welcoming staff!

Nothing was too much trouble this evening, and the food was delicious. One of our party is coeliac, and they were able to make nearly everything gluten free. The only thing he couldn't eat were the pancakes, but everything else, including sweet & sour, noodles, beef, salt & pepper chicken wings, plus much more, was GF. Thank you for making our grandson really happy.

Always a great place to eat and get consistently good food

Ordered the aubergine in black bean sauce, General Tso's tofu, and mushroom satay sticks. Disappointing - very oily and bland, lacking any sauce

Three of us went for dinner that evening and everyone enjoyed their meal. Spring rolls, chicken and cashew nuts in yellow bean sauce, duck with pineapple, all good!

Delicious food, served well with a nice smile 😃 They have to do something about the lighting, the lights fell from back, on my head and therefore the shadow was on the food. The place not being brightly lit ( for ambience), the shadow did spoil my dinning experience and we left mid way.

Excellent Chinese food at a competitive and fair price. We had the set menu for 2 and thoroughly enjoyed it. The service and restaurant decoration are great too. Can only recommend!

Have been going to Xi’an for many, many years. It’s the BEST Chinese I’ve been to anywhere. Food is plentiful and portion sizes big (maybe too big) but the taste, ambiance and service are too notch. If you visit Oxford this is one not to miss!

Another amazing visit to XI’ AN, great hosts, great cocktails, amazing food and perfect atmosphere. Highly recommend having the Smoked Shredded Chicken, or anything else on the menu as it is all 5*

Not a good experience eating here , the rice was totally dry and the dumplings I ordered were so oily . My colleague ordered a Xian noodle it was so bad 😞. I paid 55 pounds for nothing .

Terrific Chinese restaurant. The duck was perfect. Excellent service, owner runs the place. It’s been in the family more than 50 years.

Vegan fried rice had not one vegetable in it. Very strange.

Best Chinese restaurant in Summertown & within 30 miles. Food excellent, high standard. Restaurant has a really good atmosphere, soft piano jazz music, good clientele. Take away food superb - just wish it was nearer to Brackley. Excellent. Staff far more friendly than New Dancing Dragon and food slightly superior.

The pork is not fresh. We asked to replace it with a roast duck dish, which was served but without any sauces (cucumber, spring onion, etc). Not a good dinning experience.

We've been here a number of times over the past 6 years and tonight's meal did not disappoint. The food is consistently delicious (recommend the Crispy Mongolian Lamb and Smoked Shredded Chicken in particular), the service is always fantastic and the atmosphere is so lovely - dimmed lights and a bit of jazz in the background. They are fantastic at catering for gluten free dietary requirements, almost everything can be made gluten free and it's *yummy*!

Worst Chinese restaurant in UK. The only star is for the service. Taste: As a Chinese. I want to say this is not Chinese cooking style and sauce. Xian is famous for noodles. But their noodles are convenient noodle. Disgusting. If you want to eat Chinese food. Never Never Never go to this restaurant. Waste my 50 pounds. (impossible worth the money)

We were seated in the substantial conservatory at the back of the restaurant that gave a feeling of openness, with a high ceiling and space, as well as confidence in health safety as not being too close to the other tables round you. Services was flawless with caring professional staff and the food as noted by others varied, extremely tasty and made from fresh ingredients. One of the best Chinese restaurants I have been to in a long time and a rare combination of excellent service, location, cleanliness and food.

Decent chinese food if you are hungry, otherwise I’d personally look for a different restaurant. The food was fresh but tasteless and the staff was quite friendly

One of the best Chinese restaurants around, and one of the few I’ve found that does General Tso’s chicken. The food is always fresh and ready in good time. It’s a nice place to eat in or takeaway from, and has a great atmosphere.

A must go place in Oxford. Great food, wine and spirits. The owner is always around to make sure you have a good evening.

OK Chinese food. The crab claws are not real, just flavoured tofu. Disappointed, would get those in Iceland.... Mocktails coconut passion was good, the pineapple one was just pineapple juice, against, disappointed... Food was alright. Ambience, staff etc, amazing. Fine dining, it is not

Food is nice. The staff are friendly but not very helpful with explaining their menu. Also check your bill, because they ripped us off and doubled the service charge :/

Take away is the way to go in lockdown, same amazing food. We asked the chef to give us a selection for 6 of their choice and we had a dish with these amazing peppers, crazy hot so the boys had a challenge, not seen them before so really enjoyed the experience, the selection, the friendly service and would highly recommend it.

Nice restaurant, good food was a bit disappointed with the service. We were a large group who spent alot of money but some of the food was slapped on the table and they barked at us.
