World Peace Cafe in Leicester

Tried here for the first time today and it's lovely. Very relaxing ambience, plenty of space, comfy seating and friendly staff. Most importantly amazing vegan food. It's hard to find good vegan light meals when out and about. I wish we lived closer because I'd certainly be in all the time.

My most recent experience at the Leicester Buddhist centre was strange & not really peaceful, instead deeply perplexing. As someone who used to work at a vegetarian cafe opposite a Tibetan Buddhist centre in Oxford, & became friends with various Tibetan monks in the past, I anticipated being invited to the cafe as a welcome experience. Instead, the opposite was true. The first thing I noticed was the prevalence of Buddhist art, which included various semi pornographic topless females on the walls. Indeed observing the golden statues in the central meditation room, these also included two very clearly topless females besides a topless golden male Buddha. As a female myself, I personally find any sexualised depiction of the female body disrespectful, since I respect the value of the right to privacy of the body. Therefore I found it strange & unnecessary to see these figures in what was meant to be a spiritual space. The other Buddhist centres I've been to and meditated at, had prayer flags everywhere, and felt like more spiritual spaces. There were no semi-nude icons everywhere, like you'd found yourself in a topless massage parlour, justified by being called Buddhist. Even the service from the staff felt unprofessional & the prices too high. I'm more used to meditating in Buddhist centres with a focus on prayer and prayer flags rather than an exploitation of the female form, as an opportunity to extract money from people, so I wouldn't specifically choose to go to the Leicester Buddhist Centre again. As far as I was aware the lesson of Buddha was meant to focus on the spirit and on prayer and being a good person rather than on using the body, to extract money from people.Everyone is different evidently.. Edit: Addendum. After going another time, for whatever reason, & averting my eyes, the cappuccino I ordered didn't even arrive.. so I had to ask for it again. The female who was managing at the time came & apologised & was kind & polite & advised me the staff are mostly foreign volunteers who don't speak English well, & as a result sometimes get it wrong, so fair enough. Even if the staff have come to study Buddhism I felt uneasy about the covert sense of exploitation going on. In fact I did some research into different aspects of Buddhist culture we might not always consider in the idealised rose tinted lenses the religious framework covers up in the West when I got home. Unfortunately I discovered exploitative practices towards women is endemic, with even the Buddhist notion of "service" used as an excuse to justify the exploitation industry in places like Thailand... Even there happen to be Buddhist texts by monks describing "enlightenment" to be found in the local brothel. Unfortunately I have now been enlightened to realise exploitation is part of the traditional Buddhist culture, so I think I'll give the place a miss in future. If the owners can afford to buy golden statues of the topless female form to meditate in front of, but not afford to pay the mostly female staff, then I'll keep my finances to myself & avoid the place next time.

We've eaten here many times over the years and you always get a good meal made with some love. The menu is small but perfectly formed. Service excellent.

What a beautiful place!!! I'd like to be there everyday. I was volunteer in the cafe, I learnt so much. I never stop to thank everyone.

On my visit a little while back, I was one of the first customers as it was opening. I had to wait for my coffee to be served to my table but it was a long wait-10 or 15 min. The prices are fair and the venue is pleasant and well decorated. Staff are nice but I think the coffee was too bitter. I would go again but I hope the service is better and coffee more arabica.

Found this cafe by chance! What a little gem. Good coffee and cake. We looked at the food menu and the food looked good. Will defo be back and try some food too the lunch time food looked good. Plenty of staff and very friendly

A mixed bag. The food here is great and I come here a lot. It's also a really nice space. Toilets always clean. What lets it down is the service. Ordered two drinks and two meals. Jacket potato was placed on a plate that was too small. Beans were spilling over the side and it couldn't be eaten very easily without creating a mess. Drinks arrived pretty late after the food and one was wrong (ordered matcha latte received a coffee). I asked if the drink was correct as matcha is usually green? and server said yes. A few moments later a lady server came over and took the drink away telling me the drink was in fact wrong. Eventually received the correct drink which was really nice but few times I have been here, the service has been similar and a little shaky.

Vegan cakes were great, but be sure to check as the young girl serving us was telling us things were vegan or gluten free, then another member of staff corrected her.

Lovely ambience, lovely food, lovely staff. The vegan food is excellent. We will come again when in Leicester.

What a lovely peaceful gem of a cafe this is! I’ve been here a few times for a cappuccino and a slice of cake. The staff are really friendly, the atmosphere is really calm and the food is delicious. I think it’s a tranquil escape away from the bustling streets of Leicester city centre. I’m so glad I found it. Thank you - I’ll be back soon!

Firstly, it's really nice to see more vegan options on the menu including vegan meals in the evening for events, especially as this is more in line with Buddhist beliefs of not harming and being kind to all animals. There are still a few vegetarian options that include eggs and dairy such as cakes/main menu, but I'm really hoping this will be completely phased out over time. The actual vegan food and drinks were lovely, and the cafe itself had a very calming atmosphere with welcoming and friendly staff. I must say we were very disappointed when a 'friendly' volunteer actually turned out to be an ex butcher who had not long sold his establishment of pain, suffering, and death. We understand the cafe is run by volunteers but we personally found this very odd, uncomfortable, and unsuitable especially considering Buddhist beliefs/ethics and the beliefs/ethics of the people who may visit/eat here including us. It was even more disturbing when the person went on to tell us how they were craving meat and went to McDonald's to get their fix, and fed raw meat/blood to their dog. Especially as we are both vegan and had not long finished our lunch, it literally turned our stomachs! We had really enjoyed our vegan lunch but unfortunately this left us feeling very sick and ruined it for us, and so we won't be returning again anytime soon because of this. For future volunteers we think you should really carefully consider who you have serving and interacting with customers, what a shame!

What a beautiful place this is , poped in for a coffee and then I realized I could go to meditation at 12.30pm so spent 30 mins in meditation room as well , an added bonus . 1 Star .... staff were very welcoming 1 Star..... very very clean 1 Star ..... coffee gorgeous 1Star ...... beautiful atmosphere & decor 1 Star ..... meditation . A wonderful mindful space in the heart of Leicester.. Order of the day was a falafel wrap with humus olives and sweet chilli sauce. toasted to perfection. The cafe is not the hidden gem it once was.. its more a blossoming flower welcoming all manner of visitors. Congrats team a wonderful visit today.

Beautiful relaxed atmosphere We ordered 2 cheese toasties. We were given I slice of white bread toast with dry cheese on top. Nit melted. Disappointed. Coffee was lovely

I achieved world peace going to this cafe

Went to their once a month meditation and meal session on a Friday evening. A 30 minutes guided meditation session followed by a 3 course vegan meal on a different theme each month. We were lucky to attend when they were doing a Japanese meal. All really tasty.

A lovely calm atmosphere and friendly service. We were greeted with a warm welcome. I tried the vegan delight grilled sandwich, and the vegan raspberry almond frangipane, and it was delicious and so affordable. We will definitely be returning! So many vegan options too.

Whenever I go to Leceister I always make time to drop into The World Peace Cafe. It's got a lovely feeling to it, relaxed decor and the staff are just so friendly. The coffee is fab, but the tiffin... I was told it was to die for, but that doesn't really do it justice. Wow ! Try this place out, you won't regret it. Next time I might try a meditation course too.

A lovely café with a really nice atmosphere. Food delicious and obviously homemade. Our empty plates were swiftly and efficiently removed when we'd finished eating and the whole place was very clean. Staff were very friendly and smiley, we're already looking forward to revisiting.

My missus is vegetarian so it was nice to go somewhere where she had a choice of stuff. I also enjoyed the salad i had and the cake was good. Not too expensive either.

We enjoyed our lunch and the service was second to none. Decor in the dining area could be made more welcoming with some foliage to improve the plain decor.

Enjoyed this place! It's quite spacey. Do note that this is located inside the Buddhist Centre. The food were reasonable for the price. I love it when I went in I was greeted with smiles by the cafe goers and staff too. The staff who works here are all volunteers. Highly recommend!

Been a few times, mostly last Friday of the month for the meditation and meal, which have all been excellent. I'm not a vegan/vegetarian, but always impressed by the vegan offerings here. In fact, every vegan meal I've ever tried has been top notch. Popped in for lunch this week, had a Pesto Ciabatta followed by very nice cake for £2.50 a slice. Nicely served with dressed salad with seeds. Nice relaxing atmosphere. Recommended.

Staffed by volunteers? The Bhuddist centre, where the café is, is run by volunteers, not sure if the staff were volunteers, too. My flat white was large (int. industry standard, and for £2.70 expensive. My polenta cake was reasonable priced and very juicy.

A couple of weeks ago we had a half hours guided meditation followed by a 4 course meal. Through the week I popped in at lunch time for a half hour guided meditation and light lunch. You can meditate on your own there if there are no classes going on.

A well made cup of tea. There could be more understanding of the needs of coeliacs to eat gluten free. Fabulous meditation space right next door.

Went for lunch after reading reviews. Very pleased and happy to pay our prayers at the Buddha temple- very tranquil and peaceful. Had lunch with wife, I had a veg wrap and wife had falafel salad. Both were very nice. Service was excellent and staff were very helpful. Would go again. Parking can be an issue but there is a nearby pay and display at New Street £1 for 1 hour and £3 for 3 hours. The place is hard to find but it is right opposite to the famous historic church were there is pilgrimage to King Richard 111 .

We only called in for a coffee but ended up being tempted to a slice of cake too. I had carrot cake, which was superb. My husband had chocolate tiffin. The lunches looked delicious, all totally vegetarian, I am looking forward to returning for lunch. The cafe is staffed by volunteers. The bill for 2 coffees and 2 cakes came to just over £8.

Always busy,full of eclectic people and always good food. Today I had the rainbow rap with hummus and it almost makes me want to stay permanently vegetarian. Hot apple juice with cinnamon is a must this time of year This is always my go to place when in town for lunch.

Great place for coffee and lunch

Another fantastic evening at the world peace cafe. I went to the monthly meditation and meal with some friends. The meditation was so lovely and calming, a great end to the week. I’ve eaten at the cafe a few times and it never fails to amaze me with the quality of the food. The 3 course vegan meal was exceptional, so tasty and well presented. I’m a meat eater but I didn’t miss the meat at all. This month it was Caribbean themed- a delicious mango and plantain salsa followed by aubergine and sweet potato curry with rice and beans. And a chocolate brownie for dessert. Absolutely top notch! I’d recommend this place to anyone, meat eaters, vegans and vegetarians. Keep up the good work!

Quiet and cosy vegan café off Guildhall Lane that has nice comfortable seating. Coffee and hot chocolate were good quality and the food was delicious. Price was about right and I felt my visit was worth the cost. I would go again.

If you are visiting Leicester Cathedral to see Richard's tomb, the Guildhall or the Richard 111 experience or if you just want some respite from shopping then this place is perfect. The food is simple but delicious vegetarian and the volunteers who run the cafe polite and welcoming.They do not offer desserts but the home made cakes are lovely. highly recommended

This is just behind the cathedral. It is part of a Buddhist centre. It is vegetarian. Not everyone's 'cup of tea'. However peaceful place in a busy city.
