Very suspicious of this place since the Food Hygiene rating wasn’t displayed. The fish was ok. Chips were poor quality and cold. Served by abbot who looked 12 and asked 3 times if I wanted salt. He dropped a Fisk nuggets so there weren’t enough and had to give me a sausage. And he forgot half the order. Not recommended.

We wanted chips and a curry sauce. TERRIBLE. The chips were made of bits and pieces with a lot of eyes, They must have been out of the fryer some time as the were just warm YUK. The curry sauce was in a tiny pot and was just a watery substance that barely stuck to the chips The single portion was £5.50 the most expensive ever bought never again. So glad we never had the fish.

Really good food and very fairly priced. Update for September 23. What a difference a year makes. The portion sizes have reduced drastically to the point that there was not enough food for an adult. The wait times are to be expected but there are no other fish and chip shops in Woolacombe now so the prices have risen at the same time as the portions have reduced. The fish was good, the chips were ok and my kids had a chicken burger and chicken nuggets which were also just OK. There is nothing special about this food any more and as one chicken burger, a few nuggets, a piece of fish and two portions of chips cost over £30 we won't be coming back.

Unfortunately these were the worst chips and peas I have ever tasted🙁However the small cod tasted nice. I had to queue as the place was getting ready to open, when it opened there were no chips ready, mine tasted like this afternoon’s leftovers warmed up. The peas had an undesirable taste. Cleanliness of behind the counter looked below average to say it had just opened and rave music was blasting out. Hence the score 👎 the young lad who served was pleasant enough.

We were staying about 50m from this takeaway and had fish and chips one evening. Not the best I have ever had but certainly not the worst. Good fish and batter and a sensible amount of chips. The method of ordering was a bit chaotic; you order at the till and there is a gaggle of people standing in the road outside waiting for the order number to be called. When it is busy it looks difficult to see where the ordering line from the people waiting for collection. I suspect you could be there for quite a while not knowing which line you are in

Average! After waiting for the best part of an hour for 2 x cod & chips we were sadly disappointed! Chips were over cooked and very bland. Fish was okay however cooked in waaaaay too much batter! Portion size was pretty decent, but overall, it was not worth the wait or the £30+ spent for a chippy tea!

This is the best fish and chips my fiancé and I have ever had. The batter was perfectly crisp, not oily or soggy at all. Perfectly cooked fish. Kind and communicative staff.

Young girl on the till is very abrupt and rude and makes you feel like an inconvenience, such a shame as the food is always lovely but we will avoid in future if the same young lady is serving.

Long wait, very disorganised. I don’t know what they are doing in there . Staff wandering around instead of just getting on with it and bagging up the orders. They took the orders quickly enough, then you have to stand on the road and wait for your order. I’m not sure exactly why, they are frying the fish and chips so why not get on and serve it?! The service was SO SLOW and the staff were apathetic and uninterested. Fish and chips ok once we got it. Next time we will buy take away from the Captains Table.

Stopped here for a quick tea on the way back from the beach, after a 20min wait for Chips and batter sausages, we were annoyed on opening the bag on arrival home that the sausages were not present, if you can fail at ensuring there’s a sausage in the wrapping of the food then fair play i would guess this same person still asks mum to tie their laces. DO NOT BOTHER WITH THIS PLACE- Chips we’re dry too

20 mins spent queuing for order to be taken. 60 mins then spent waiting for order! Poor communication between counter staff and the one guy frying. Clearly could not cope with demand and volume of customers. Having visited fish and chips shops with a higher volume of customers, I’m not sure why it was taking so long for orders to be fulfilled.

Waited in the queue for over an hour then gave up. Owners obviously enjoy a game on reviews and responded in Shakespeare esq. rhetoric. I never even got to speak to their staff I queued so long. Stay clear of this place.

The cashier lady (pictured below) was absolutely rude. She had no manners and slammed the receipt onto the counter. The wait was 10-15 minutes which i didn’t mind, however i don’t like how rude the worker was. When collecting the food, i told one of the workers that the cashier was rude and they apologised for it, but i doubt this would get back to management. Apart from the rude cashier the food was lovely but i wouldn’t go again with the customer service i recieved today.

As In the picture down below the girl served us and instead of politely asking us what we would like she said 'what do you want' I then said chips please she then said 'is that it' she did not ask how I wanted to pay I just said card please and she did not reply stuck out the card machine and then slammed the receipt on the desk. I was upset by this because I had approach her with manners so I picked it up off the side and as I was walking away she gave me a dirty look that was not only noticed by my partner and friend but by another couple in the queue waiting for their food as they said ' she has an attitude she does' I then stood waiting for atleast 20 minutes for some chips and the whole time she kept staring and talking to her other young colleagues whilst directly looking at us making us uncomfortable as I tried not to look in her direction but couldn't help but notice her staring every time I looked up to see if we was being called yet. I then proceeded to take the picture of the store with her in the photo giving me a dirty look as I do so, due to how uncomfortable I was made to feel. We spoke to another young lady when collecting the food as my friend said ' I just have to say can you tell the cashier girl to sort her customer service attitude out as it is disgusting' the young girl apologised for the experience but due to them all clearly talking and staring at us whilst we waited my partner put a review up so that hopefully managers could see and have words with the young girl so that other do not have to experience what we did. However this then lead to the girl herself replying as in the photos below we can now identify her as Elizebeth and she proceeded to try and justify her actions by thinking we was another customer. I did not in fact pay in cash or throw any money at her and if she is saying my phone was more important I was actually getting my card up ready as I was paying by Apple Pay . I took photos of the whole store and not just her and she is clearly in them giving us a dirty. I'm clearly not the only customer who felt like this as I said previously people in the queue had said about her attitude. The same people when collecting their food also said thank you in which she did not reply so the male shouted 'have a good day' loudly and sarcastically due to how rude she was. I'm sorry but I would be mortified to have a business and let 'underage' rude people drag my business down like this. As you can see below she replied and got completely the wrong customers so my question is how many people has this girl done this too? As for Elizabeth yes you are clearly younger then us and that was apparent in your attitude and the way you portray yourself so I do not appreciate being belittled and spoken to in such as manner when I was nothing but polite to you. Please get some training on customer service skills many thanks. P.s. if your going to reply with such lies then please make sure your contacting the correct customers.

The fish and chips really were delicious. The wait was a little long, and they are on the expensive side - but overall really enjoyed the meal! Would go back.

I can't even give it 1 star for atmosphere. We have just spent 70 pounds as a family and the girl serving was disgusting. Speaking to customers like rubbish, rolling her eyes, speaking to a member of staff like he's a piece of rubbish. We won't ever ever use this place again. Would rather spend it somewhere where they appreciate the customers. Oh.... And sort out your eyelashes...... You may get in a better mood of you could see properly

Shut early and always run out ir say they have when they don't want to serve you. Its the only Fish and Chip shop in Wooly so arrogant and no customer service as going to get your business as there is no alternative. Go to Tides in for fabulous Fish and Chips great service and a beautiful setting dont bother with a take away its an expensive waste of time if you are “lucky” to be served”

We ate from here at the end of our stay and wished we had found it earlier , fish really nice and the chips crispy really nice highly recommend.

Have had fish and chips from Woolacombe Fryer for a number of years and look forward to a fish and chip supper every time we visit Woolacombe (twice a year) and would previously have given 5 stars however this time I am afraid 2 stars only. Whilst the fish was delicious the chips were of poor quality and a very small portion was given. I also made it clear no salt and vinegar but salt was put on the chips. I think it will be back to Ilfracombe for fish and chips on our next visit.

Great value for money. We got the daily special which was Hake & Chips with a side & it was £22.00. Portions were huge. Busy but service was fast.

Overpriced for average quality. The batter on the fish was thick, stodgy and didn’t taste like it was cooked thoroughly enough. Go to SQ in Braunton or somewhere in ilfracombe for decent fish and chips.

We are in holiday in ilfracombe but read the reviews and decided to travel to Woolacombe to live the dream of watching the sunset and feed the family for a special treat, chips by the sea. Its our last night so we have run all the food we had down to literally nothing. An hours parking was not enough to nip inside this chippy, the service is the most disorganised mess you have ever seen. I'm embarrassed for them. We were unaware getting into the queue just how long we would be or we would have gone somewhere else, my husband had got the card to buy the chips, so i couldn't pay the meter anymore, my hour ran up and I had to circle for another 70 mins. Have you ever been to a chippy where it takes 130 mins to get served, the queue wasn't even that big. My husband and kids were absolutely freezing as in vest tops after the hot day, they were starving and tearful and it was dark when they finally emerged so the sunset was gone, they got into the car and still didn't have any chips, as after that wait the staff didn't want to put anymore chips on at 830 as they were closing at 9. People had been waiting 130 mins, are they joking? Couldnt find anywhere open then and we are all now absolutely starving. Not good enough

Almost £25 for fish & chips twice and a curry sauce take out. what a rip off!! Large fish was small, thin, dry & over cooked, and it was a large that was served as i waited ages for it, staff didn’t seem to know what they were doing. Would not return, extortionate prices for what was served up. Nowhere else is as expensive, whatever the owners say! Owner has a lot to say but clearly does not know how to run a business. Fish and chips have always been an affordable cheap family meal. Stop getting so defensive and listen to your customers

Absolutely useless, advertise a lot don’t have a lot, food looks like it’s been stored in heat storage, food over the floor just poor. The service well I quote “83% chance we don’t have it” that fact there are limited choices in restaurants in the area is no excuses for poor and down right rudeness from staff. First they overcharged me then when asked for a refund, rather than put it back on the card, they charged me again! Noticed to late to rectify, so now sulking over an expensive, average chippy which cost me too much. Cannot recommend.

Portions were really good and prices ok for a seaside place. Just let down by staff who dish food up wishing to be elsewhere and slow. I don’t get why if all you sell is fish n chips. You can allow yourself not to have mountains ready at peak times.

We arrived here at 11:50 and waited for the Woolacombe fryer to open at 12. By the time 12 came the queue was about to go round the corner so I was glad we had arrived early. The prices were on the expensive side for chips & as we were at the front of the queue we were in & out quickly. The chips were quite pale in colour & stuck together & not as good as the ones served by our local chip shop. As Woolacombe has a captive audience the eateries don’t seem to try as hard as they would do in other places. I am glad we just ordered chips based on the quality of the cooking. I wouldn’t make a special effort to go back here and wouldn’t seek it out. The staff were friendly although very young & there was a big sign up announcing staff shortages so a limited menu as a result

Worst fish and chips ever! How on earth this place has got some decent reviews is beyond me - must be different staff I guess - the food served up this evening was inedible - chips were mash and batter the same - crammed into a container. Utter trash

This was by far the worst fish & chips we’ve ever had. The chips were literally mush and the fish batter soggy - I don’t like writing harsh reviews but it was very poor. Based on the good reviews I can only imagine they had different staff on that particular day - this was Thursday 29th July evening. I should have driven back and asked for a refund but didn’t want to waste more time and money - my advice is to train your staff how to deep fry, and to take care in what they are serving - there is no excuse for serving trash. The fish and chips are very nice, crispy and cooked well not soggy and pale chips. There is often a lengthy queue, but I guess that’s just part of it and it didn’t take too long. I don’t know if it’s a northern thing for me to expect but they don’t have bread rolls on the menu for a chip butty. They did provide them on request but it was not buttered bread so a bit dry. I find it quite crazy people complaining about portions particularly of chips. My partner and I shared a large fish and chips and were well stuffed.

Went on a Friday at 6pm and queued for 25mins. Once ordered was only 5 mins more. Was worth it though as tasty. Had 2 cod and chips and we both enjoyed it. We drove upto the dunes and ate with a lovely view. Would eat here again

First visit to woolacombe came for a day out we came down from Hertfordshire just wanted fish & chips for lunch when we parked up could smell it went for a walk then looked for the place and OMG amazing fish & chips the chips was the best and as for the fish the batter was so crispy fish so moist all I can say it’s the best fish & chips I’ve had from when I was a kid I will be coming to woolacombe was a lovely place so beautiful and peaceful will so be coming to get my fish & chips again staff were so nice thank you

Excellent fish and chips and good portions. However the queue to order was less good. 25 mins to get to the front of the queue to order and then a further 21 minutes for the order to be ready. There must be some efficiency savings in there somewhere?

We were lucky, based on other reviews, and the queue wasn’t too bad, and did move pretty quick. Food was great, and what you’d expect from a fish and chip takeaway! Only thing that could be improved upon is cleanliness, with not a single mask or use of handgel in sight for staff. We did use our own forks, and it seem common in Woolacombe as most other shops and takeaways decided mask wearing wasn’t for them either, so we just kind of accepted it - wouldn’t have eaten otherwise . Our hometown currently has the lowest Covid rate in the UK, so I think perhaps we’re just spoilt!

Had a great cod and chips takeaway from here. There was a good 20 meter queue to be served and it did take about 20 mins. But because of the current restrictions, no one was complaining.Well organised for ordering and pickup and would definitely use again

Not the first time we have used this chippy, and given it has an exclusive monopoly for the town, unlikely to be the last.The fish and chips here are average. If you are an adult you MUST buy a large cod and chips. The standard portion is small. This means that for 2xfish&chips, a small sausage&chips, s small portion of chips, 2 curry sauce and a mushy peas, you pay £30.50. Toppy.Chips are of a relatively good standard, tasty enough and well cooked. Fish is never cooked long enough, and the batter a bit thin. The fish is fresh and of a typically standard size (when buying large). The real issue here are the queues. A good 35 mins wait at 5.30 pm today (Easter), but we have waited twice this in Summer. They simply don't seem geared up for even moderate crowds, which is another reason for the average score.

Part of holiday tradition to try local fish and chips. Ideally wanted somewhere to sit in on a very windy day and away from prying gulls but after looking at several places happily settled for this takeaway.It was quite busy and people waiting outside for orders but well organised and the food didn’t take too long. Staying in Golden Coast, taxi to Woolacombe, a couple of pints in The Red Barn in the Autumn sunshine, washed down with Fish and Chips from the Woolacombe Fryer. I'm a fussy Chippy lover, I can say the food is worth the wait. A short queue, which under the current circumstances is worth it, you guys have it to a tee. Then we got a taxi bacl to eat our supper.

Queued for 30 mins (which would be fine if it was worth it) to order 1 large cod, 2 small cod, 2 chips, peas and curry. The fish was all the same size, overcooked and about a 1cm thick. The peas were barely mushy, portions small and the young girl behind the till was rude. I would expect fish at a coastal town to be 100 times better than this and I won't be visiting again whilst here. They have the monopoly on the town so you'd think they would be great, but they were some of the worst I've had - far from worth the £24.

Went to the Woolacombe Fryer on Sunday evening (23rd August) because I’d been told it was the best (locally). Queued for 35 mins on the street to place my order. Ordered large cod and chips, twice, and 2 mushy peas (£19). Waited another 10mins for my food. The girl serving looked at me and said “2 cod and chips and 2 mushy peas”, I replied “large cod”, she replied yes and passed them to the lad in charge of salt and vinegar. The food was for my son and I, it was the last evening of our holiday. When we got back to where we were staying we opened the boxes to find that we’d been given standard cod (and small standard, at that!) I decided I wasn’t going to drive back to woolacombe and queue to get it changed, so we started to eat, then we opened the mushy peas, well there was certainly nothing “mushy” about them, they were like green marbles in green water, rock hard Neither of us ate the peas. So, in conclusion I paid £19 for 2 small standard cod and chips! I will stick to going to Squires (in Braunton) in future, the fish is twice the size, the peas are mushy, and to be honest the fish tastes better.

Great fish & chip shop although not the cheapest. £36 for Three scampi and chips, one fish cake & chips and three curry sauces. Staff were more interested in watching TV but serving us, but hey guess I would get bored serving all day too, although it was only lunchtime! One taking the money, one cooking, one serving and two girls watching TV, I would look at cutting costs if I owned this one. Lucky I dont. Worth the wait for the good food, ate it on the beach five mins walk way. Recommended!

Went here on our first evening in Woolacombe. There was quite a queue and we found out why. Some of the best fish and chips as well as Scampi and chips that we have had. The queue moved on quite quickly, so don't be put off.
