William's, Nailsworth in Stroud

Had a birthday lunch here on the 9th of September and it was fantastic. Staff were great. Highly recommend

Excellent seafood, with a busy, bistro style atmosphere. For me, it was a little expensive for the overall style, but I can not fault the quality of the food.

A great place to eat if you are in Nailsworth.

We were in Nailsworth for a couple of days chilling.Noticed this fish restaurant in central Nailsworth and found that they are open from lunchtime till teatime Monday to Thursday and also open at night Friday and Saturday. Went for a light lunch bite on Tuesday as had already booked an Italian meal for the evening. Very friendly greeting by staff and we were offered an outside table, which was a bonus considering the hot weather. Good choice of fish and seafood first courses. I won't give you menu choices as they change a lot of it daily. I had the William's soup ( which is a menu staple and my wife had a King Scallop. Both were excellent. ( The William's soup is probably the best fish soup I can remember eating )Very reasonable price including wine and beer. Enjoyed it so much we decided to return the next day for a full lunch. Outside table again and very friendly professional waiting staff. We both went for Spicy Crab soup first course. My wife had halibut main and I had Catalan fish stew. Both meals were superb. We had a chat with waitress and she told us that they get most of their fish and seafood fresh daily, delivered from various parts of the country. What a gem of a restaurant. So unusual to get such a great independent seafood restaurant in the heart of England, so far from the coast. We cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough for food, staff, atmosphere and value for money.

Fishmonger visit, had a lovely surprise; I haven't dined here for a while but I love their fish soup. I bought a tub of it from the chiller, along with a cute jar of sauce rouille and, to my delight, the friendly fishmonger told me the soup comes with fresh fish chunks wrapped separately, to cook at home. The soup was plenty for 2 servings and the stirred-in sauce was divine. I will freeze an ice cube tray of the leftover sauce to add richness to pasta dishes or as a dip with prawns, though tbh I could eat spoonfuls of it on its own.

As ever fine atmosphere, excellent service and happy customers. However, a mild gripe: for the second time in two visits, a few months apart, my fish was raw in the middle and had to be returned and came back over cooked rather than tender or flaky. Sure, this happens and it won’t stop me returning next time I am up. The dishes of the other people I was with were perfect.

The best place to go for fresh fish whether you’re eating in or taking away with excellent staff and a hands-on owner. They also have a fantastic range of products available in their shop front.

We had an absolutely incredible meal here this evening, not like any other fish place I have been to. Every dish we ordered was perfect and the flavours were matched very well. Lots of choice and a menu specific to the day

The food here is amazing, totally recommend if you like seafood . Really delicious and interesting. The tuna tartare was outstanding, the tuna steak and monkfish were excellent. The raspberry posset for desert was also delicious. Service was really attentive and efficient. We’ll be back

A lovely restaurant nestled in quaint Nailsworth. A really relaxed informal atmosphere, paired with delicious fresh food and a team of very lovely enthusiastic staff. The food came out very quickly so if you wanted to make more of an evening of it, perhaps ask to slow down. We had scallops and fish soup, Thai red mussels and monkfish and prawn skewers - all delicious!

My husband and I visited Stroud for the weekend and stayed in a hotel/pub just outside the town. We decided to dine at a restaurant based on a recommendation from a friend. We quickly booked an Uber to take us there, and after enjoying our meal, we decided to head back to the hotel. However, we could not find any available cabs or Ubers, which caused us to panic. We then turned to Williams restaurant for help, where two lovely girls working at the counter informed us that no cabs were available during the weekend. Despite this, they empathised with our stressful situation and offered to ask one of their staff members to give us a ride back. We were grateful to receive the help of Sue, who drove us back to our hotel and put our minds at ease. I want to thank the staff at Williams Restaurant for their exceptional kindness and hospitality. Even though we didn't dine there, they went above and beyond to help us out of a difficult situation. This experience has left a lasting impression on us, and we need more compassionate people like them in the world.Thank you for being very nice to us and I am sure next visit we will return here to taste you yummy food.

Busy little fish restaurant in the heart of Nailsworth, efficient serving staff.

Thanks so much for a lovely night. We came as a big party of 13. It was a very thoughtful touch to produce a separate menu for the vegans amongst us. The waiting staff were remarkable in the way they dealt with such a large party. The food was served quickly and was amazing. It was my mother's 80th and the staff sang happy birthday and presented her with a cake. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable evening for our whole family. Thank you!

Food, ambience and service absolutely excellent. I had skate wing and it was different to the normal flat wing, this was like a steak. Simply delicious.

No one wants a fishmonger to wrongly accuse someone of stealing, but this place does. The food isnt great and the fish wasnt even fresh. Waste of money and time

No idea how this place has so many good reviews. We were greeted by the stench of rotten fish… which made it hard to eat the meal. The food was bland and under seasoned . Very disappointing when you are paying good money for food, maybe they had an off day.

If you’re in the area and like seafood then this is an absolute must. Great service and staff, good wine selection. Food was delicious and didn’t disappoint. Highly recommend. Pictures attached. Starters , Tuna carpaccio, pan fried scallops with poached pear. Mains, rolled lemon sole & split giant prawns. Dessert, chocolate tart & raspberry crème brûlée. All washed down with chilled Pinot Grigio. 👌

Had a fabulous lunch with friends. The food was excellent, and I can recommend the fish soup as a starter. All the dishes were fabulous and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The only thing that spoilt things a little bit for us was a very noisy customer who obviously wanted everyone to hear what a fabulous financial salesman he was. What a bore, but that's not the fault of the restaurant, just a bit of a shame. It's not the cheapest, however, worth every penny, and I would absolutely recommend a visit. We will definitely be visiting again soon.

My granddaughter booked a party of four of us for lunch on July 8th. whilst staying with her in Chalford Hill for the weekend. The food was very good but the fish and chips were not exceptional. Service was good until dessert time. We had to wait a long time before a waitress took our order and then after waiting even longer had to enquire as to what had happened to our desserts.? The staff were more intent on closing the restaurant than serving the customers.

This is our 2/3rd visit and somehow it didn't have the same experience with previous visits, hard to explain why but it just didn't. Disappointed that a fish restaurant had run out of haddock so unable to serve a staple haddock and chips. A pity but doubt we'll make another visit.

Nice cafe atmosphere, beautiful food and great service. We had lunch and as long as you like seafood you are in for a real treat. We booked online and received a warm welcome on arrival. The food was well presented and tasted fantastic.

I really like Williams, but today the white haired chap on the fish counter was just rude for no reason at all so we left.

We went there today with relatives, they allowed a guide dog to sit quietly in a corner and are obviously proud to be inclusive and diverse. The food was amazing, the service was impeccable, the atmosphere was tremendous and the company was good. One of the finest fish dishes I ve ever tasted. The John Dory was perfect. Her genuine passion for the restaurant and its offerings shone through in her attentive recommendations and willingness to cater to our preferences. Visited for our anniversary and have to say its probably the nicest meal we have ever had. The staff were friendly , helpful and very attentive. Couldn't do enough for us. All of the food tasted amazing, full of flavour and cooked to perfection. Husband had the hake and said its the nicest he's had. Reasonably priced as well. Would definitely recommend and will definitely return when in the area again x

Restaurant has a shop as you go in which is very nice but ensure you sit outside eye sight of the shop to ensure restaurant feel. We had lunch menu and food/service was great (website prices are lower and different to what we had) antipasti was £9.50 and not £7.50. All subject to availability as fish restaurant as always. We sat next to a famous actor which was nice and casual with no one bothering him. Prices reflect quality of restaurant and we paid £200 for 3 of us to have 3 courses including large glasses of wine. Would recommend a visit.

Really great food. We were visiting the area and staying locally. Managed to get a table on a Friday night. The choice was good, lots of options. Service was great. They were very busy but we did not feel rushed at all. The atmosphere was bubbly and friendly. Very enjoyable evening.

My girlfriend booked a table here for my birthday, and even though expectations were high, we were both thoroughly impressed. And considering we had a couple of drinks, a bottle of wine and a cocktail, the overall price was pretty reasonable. Photos include the chowder, duck terrine, oysters, Thai monkfish, and grilled tuna steak. The grilled tuna was possibly the most enjoyable piece of fish I've ever had.

Very enjoyable evening. Salmon tartare, Hake and Lemon Sole were exceptional. Perfectly cooked. Recommended.

What a treat! We finally got to dine at Williams. Everything was nice and being Christmastime too. Our food was lovely, and hot. We even got to dine opposite Richard E. Grant in there. Wow what a surprise but apparently he does dine there. I can't wait to go again and try my second choice of meal on the menu ✨️⭐️

Came here for dinner this weekend for birthday celebrations, it was better than we could have imagined. The staff all went above and beyond for us, nothing was too much and they made the experience so welcoming and good. The food was nothing short of a dream, we had scallops to start which easily can go wrong but they were so soft and the sauce was to die for. We both then treated ourselves to half a lobster which was cooked to a T, everything was so fresh and the wine and champagne is of such good quality. We would happily drive the 2 and half hours just to come back🤌🏽 x

Delicious fresh seafood and top service

We had an excellent lunch from the set menu. The butterflied sardines were cooked well and nicely served. The Catalan fish stew, for main, was hearty and very tasty. Followed by a sticky toffee pudding. Generous portions, good price and friendly, efficient staff. We expect to visit again.

Food was superb, the seafood was amongst the best we've ever tried. Garden tables were lovely (we ate outside), the dining room was beautiful, we'll return to dine there. I have been intending to visit William's for a long time. Staff were super, food was good. I had a Catalan fish stew which was good but slightly underseasoned for my taste. Prices are high but seafood is very expensive these days. Shared a bottle of Muscadet which was good and reasonably priced. I would definitely go again.

Always incredible food and service. The only that stops me visiting more often is the single vegetarian option on the menu for my wife. It always seems to be the same thing, although always delicious.

Me & my partner came here on a Thursday 28th at around 1PM. We came here based on recommendations from friends & family. We were super excited however it was all a little anticlimactic. They are known for their seafood & we were shocked to find NO SHELLFISH on the menu except for scallops & oysters on the starters. No crab, lobster or prawns we did ask the waiter who was kind enough to go and ask the kitchen. He came back and apologised & said there was none in today, they were getting them in for the weekend. We found this shocking as they are also a fishmonger & are only open for lunch service Tuesday-Thursday. Our order was: 2 large Albariño 1 small 6 oysters Scallops Sea Bass Bill total - £96.45 The wine was great we just found the small wine glass peculiar but cute. Oysters were fine Scallops were a little overdone for me. The Sea Bass was nice the meat itself was cooked really nice I just wish the skin had been a little crispier. Nobody really came to check on us once we had our mains & we had to ask for the dessert menu (we didn’t order) & bill. Overall it was just a bit of a let down having heard such great things.

Menu online isn't what your offered when you dine in so what we hoped for wasn't available. After taking our order quickly the rest of the service was slow. Wasn't impressed, food wasnt great, had high hopes of it becoming a regular place to eat.

What a pleasure it was to visit the Williams fishmonger in Nailsworth. Bought some Skate today which took me back to my childhood holidays on the Cardiganshire coast. Beautiful fresh fish served by knowledgeable friendly staff.

Wow!!! What an incredible dining experience. Booked up for the mother's 70th as wanted somewhere special and boy did they not disappoint. Food was incredible, service was excellent If there was an option to rate higher than 5 stars I 100% would !!!

We went to Williams on our weekend trip to the Cotswolds and we were not disappointed. My wife and I went on a recommendation, as a pescatarian we found this a great experience. Staff were attentive (with one member very friendly). The food was excellent and the spicy crab soup was a particular winner. Overall great value for money. Will definitely return on our next trip.

Lovely place for lunch. Two course £20 as well as other options. Lots of fish choices, scallops and prawn dish starters were delicious. Monkfish main, fish soup and beef mains equally so. No desserts tried but coffee and truffles were exactly right to end the meal. Will be returning.

Good Valentine's lunch deal. Excellent fish & chips. Nice Catalan stew. Smoked haddock chowda starter was tasty but the soup was too thin.

We went here last night for a meal that we were both looking forward to. It’s a lovely looking place set in a charming looking village. The menu was much smaller and less varied than the sample menu shown online which would be only slightly disappointing if you are a fish lover but disappointing if you are not. We both had scallops for starters which was a pretty looking dish although the scallops themselves were under-caramelised and completely lacking seasoning. For mains my girlfriend had a surf and turf. The lobster had no claw and the meat was shrivelled inside the shell. There was a lovely looking steak but it was undercooked and once again completely lacking and seasoning. Perhaps to compensate for the undercooked steak there was a very overcooked heritage carrot. When it said heritage carrot we didn’t realise that they meant English Heritage as in the society specialising in things that were once lovely but now well past their best and showing the scars of a civil war. I had sea bass on a chick pea curry. The skin was supposed to be crispy but was about as crispy as clingfilm. The fish was reminiscent of a crispy pancake sadly not because of being crispy but because it was so thin. The curry lacked even a mild heat and once again there was a total absence of seasoning. In all I’m not sure if the chef had an off nite or a night off. The dishes were attractive looking but sadly the portion sizes and prices were the only things that the food had in common with dining level food. The day after our visit my girlfriend was I’ll with an upset tummy. That may have had nothing to do with the food or the restaurant of course it may have just been a bug and coincidence but it is very unlike her to become so I’ll.

Lovely pictures on the website but certainly not what we had. Service was slow. Overall food was bland and tasteless and small, nothing like the sizes in the pictures. Lobster over baked and shrunk, Very disappointed. Bill took ages so got up to the till.

Quality of the produce was incredible, the fish counter selection was awesome, The prices were absolutely fantasticly reasonable too! Oysters were wonderful, thanks to the gentleman for shucking a few for me as a treat. Staff were super friendly and welcoming. I will return one day to this brilliant place. The food and service were great. They welcome families with kids and babies. Thoroughly recommend it.

A lovely fish restaurant serving great dishes but last time I was there they'd let someone else alter my online booking by 'phone without my knowledge and, unlike the rest of the staff who are lovely, an older waitress (maybe the maître'd?) gives the impression that working in a busy restaurant is too much and is straightfaced and often looks positively fed up! Not the impression William's wants to give its clientele I'm sure.

Probably one of my favourite places for lunch or dinner. The fish soup either as a main or starter is a delight. A beautifully cooked fillet of sea bass on a Thai noodle salad lacked some heat but was delicious.
